VAN ANDEL ARENA GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. MARCH 18-19 2016 OPENING FACE-OFF 2016 WCHA Final Five: The WCHA will crown its playoff champion this weekend at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich., as tournament top-seed Michigan Tech, Minnesota State, Bowling Green and Ferris State will compete for the prestigious Broadmoor Trophy and the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The two-time defending champion Mavericks will face the Falcons in Friday's first semifinal at 4:07 p.m. ET, while the Huskies and Bulldogs will skate in the second semifinal at 7:37 p.m. ET. The two winners will face-off at 6:07 p.m. ET Saturday night in the championship game. FOX Sports: Through the league's exclusive broadcast partnership with FOX Sports North, all three games of the 2016 WCHA Final Five will be aired live on FOX Sports North (second semifinal on FOX Sports North PLUS), FOX Sports Wisconsin Alternate and FOX College Sports Atlantic. FOX Sports Detroit PLUS will carry both semifinals live and will air a tape-delayed broadcast of the championship game (at 10 p.m. ET Saturday). SportsTime Ohio will air tape-delayed coverage of the first semifinal game at 10 p.m. ET Friday and of the championship game at 12 p.m. ET Sunday. Veteran college hockey play-by-play voice Dan Parkhurst will be on the call alongside color analyst Dave Ellis, a longtime Michigan sports personality and a contributor on WCHA radio broadcasts. From the Top: For the first time in the three seasons of the WCHA's current configuration, each of the top four playoff seeds won their Quarterfinal Round series to advance to the Final Five. You Look Familiar: The 2016 Final Five field is the same, albeit with different seeds, as the 2015 tournament. Taken a step further, Bowling Green, Ferris State and Minnesota State are all making their third-straight trips to the WCHA playoff championship. Polling Place: The MacNaughton Cup co-champions and Final Five top seeds represent the WCHA in this week's opinion polls, with No. 12 Michigan Tech and No. 15 Minnesota State both rising one spot in the USCHO.com poll. The Huskies are also holding steady at No. 13 in the USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine rankings. Petan a Hobey Baker Finalist: Michigan Tech co-captain Alex Petan, the 2015-16 WCHA Player of the Year and league scoring champion, is also a top ten finalist for the 2016 Hobey Baker Memorial Award. The Huskies have had finalists in consecutive years for the first time in program history (Tanner Kero, who made his NHL debut this season with the Chicago Blackhawks, was a finalist in 2014-15). REGULAR SEASON REWIND Winning Hockey: The WCHA finished its regular season with 60 percent of its membership (six of 10 teams) playing .500-or-better hockey, the third-best league-wide distribution among all NCAA conferences (ECAC Hockey had eight of 12 teams at-or-above .500, for 66.7 percent, while five-of-eight NCHC teams - or 62.5 percent - were at least break-even). The Cup Goes Home, and Stays Put: For the seventh time in league history (also 1952-53, 1957-58, 1962-63, 1996-97, 2004-05 and 2012-13), the WCHA finished its regular season with co-champions, as Michigan Tech and Minnesota State ended the year with 39 points apiece. Originally crafted in Calumet, Mich., the fabled MacNaughton Cup is returning to its ancestral home in Copper Country for the first time since 1976, with the Huskies earning a share of their seventh WCHA title. The Mavericks won their second consecutive (and overall) league crown. The two schools will each get the Cup for a six-month period over the next year. Don't Leave Your Seats: Seventy-one (71) of the 140 WCHA regular season games in 2015-16 were either ties (23) or one-goal decisions (48), with 35 overtime contests. Thirty-three (33) league games featured a tie-breaking, third-period game-winning goal (including 15 in the last five minutes of regulation), with an additional 12 victories coming in overtime. BY THE NUMBERS 20-20-20: Bowling Green (22-13-6) and Michigan Tech (23-8-5) have both reached the 20-win plateau for the second consecutive season. The Falcons last achieved that feat between 1994-95 and 1995-96; the Huskies, not since a three-campaign run between 1980- 81 and 1982-83 (including the final two years of John MacInnes' Hall-of-Fame tenure in Houghton). Minnesota State (20-12-7) has now recorded three-consecutive 20-win seasons for the first time in the school's D-I history and just the second-time ever (legendary bench boss Don Brose had a five-year run between 1978-79 and 1982-83). 100/400: Bowling Green head coach Chris Bergeron is just the fourth BGSU bench boss to win 100 games (now 102). Minnesota State's Mike Hastings is sitting on 99 career victories entering the Final Five, while Michigan Tech's Mel Pearson has 95 wins to his credit (second-most in school history). Earlier this season, Ferris State's Bob Daniels - the winningest coach in school history - won his 400th game behind the Bulldogs' bench (now 414). .844: Michigan Tech's winning percentage since Jan. 1, third-best in the country. The Huskies are 12-1-3 in 2016, and are 14-2-4 (.800) in their past 20 games, dating back to Dec. 11 (also the NCAA's third-best mark). 2016 WCHA FinAl Five• No. 1 seed - Michigan Tech Huskies (23-8-5)

• WCHA regular season co-champion Michigan Tech is back in its second consecutive Final Five after sweeping Alaska, 7-1 and 5-3, in the WCHA Quarterfinals.• Tech is appearing in its seventh WCHA Final Five and third of the Mel Pearson era. The Huskies have previously advanced to the event in 1993 (participant), 1994 (fourth), 1996

(second), 2007 (participant), 2012 (participant) and 2015 (second). Michigan Tech boasts nine WCHA playoff championships all-time (most recent coming in 1981).• Senior goaltender Jamie Phillips, who already boasts the program’s all-time shutout record with 10, can tie the Tech career victories mark in the semifinals. Bruce Horsch is the

all-time leader in that category with 58 wins from 1974-78.• No. 2 Seed - Minnesota State Mavericks (20-12-7)

• Minnesota State claimed a best-of-three first round WCHA series with Lake Superior State, winning games #1 (5-2) and #3 (3-0) in advancing to next weekend’s Final Five in Grand Rapids, Mich.

• This year will be Minnesota State’s fourth-straight appearance in the WCHA Final Five and sixth overall. The Mavericks, who have won the last two Broadmoor Trophies as the WCHA postseason tournament champions, stand 4-4 all-time in WCHA Final Five games.

• Senior forward Bryce Gervais, who scored his team-best 15th goal of the year in last Friday’s win over Lake Superior State, has played in 161 consecutive games - establishing school records for career games played and consecutive games.

• No. 3 Seed - Bowling Green Falcons (22-13-6)• Bowling Green came back from a first-game loss to defeat Bemidji State in their best-of-three WCHA Tournament first round series with wins of 7-2 and 3-1 in the final two

games. BGSU has now won a best-of-three playoff series in six consecutive years, including all three as members of the WCHA.• The Falcons will be seeking their first-ever win this weekend in the WCHA Final Five. In 2014, BGSU lost a semifinal 4-0 to Minnesota State. Last season, the Falcons fell 5-2 in a

semifinal against Michigan Tech.• Sophomore goaltender Chris Nell saved 93 of 99 shots during the three game series against Bemidji State. For the season, Nell leads the WCHA overall in save percentage (.931)

and is third in goals against average (1.91). He has given up just 67 goals in 35 starts and two or fewer in 25 of those.• No. 4 Seed - Ferris State Bulldogs (17-14-6)

• Ferris State will make its third consecutive trip to the WCHA Final Five after completing a two-game sweep of Northern Michigan in a WCHA Quarterfinal series at Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs defeated NMU 3-2 in Game 1 on Friday, before finishing the series with a 5-2 victory in Game 2 Saturday night.

• In FSU’s previous Final Five appearances in 2014 and 2015, the team has produced a 1-2 record, defeating Alaska Anchorage in the 2014 semifinals and falling to Minnesota State in the 2014 title game and the 2015 semis.

• Gerald Mayhew has been at his best for Ferris State during postseason play. The junior has totaled seven goals and four assists for 11 points in 11 career playoff games. The forward has also notched three game-winning scores during his three seasons of playoff action.

3: The 2016 WCHA Final Five includes three teams with juniors wearing the captain's "C": Bowling Green defenseman Sean Walker, Minnesota State junior defenseman Carter Foguth and Ferris State forward Kyle Schempp. The tournament also features three of the NCAA's top-12 defensive teams: No. 6 Minnesota State (1.97 goals allowed per game), No. 9 Michigan Tech (2.11) and No. 11 Bowling Green (2.17).

2016 HonorAry FiFtH teAM - grAnd rApidS Sled WingS

The name “Final Five” is synonymous with the WCHA and its treasured playoff championship. Originally dubbed the WCHA Final Five when the league’s five first-round playoff winners met at the St. Paul Civic Center at the end of the 1992-93 season, and continuing in 2011 when the field expanded to six teams in a five-game format, the moniker has stuck through different formats and venues.

To pay homage to the tournament name and the league’s long-standing mission of growing the game, the WCHA is proud to recognize the 2016 “Honorary Fifth Team” – the Grand Rapids Sled Wings. An inspirational and talented collection of hockey players ranging from ages 4 to adulthood, the Sled Wings – a team of athletes of all ages with physical disabilities – are sponsored by the Grand Rapids Griffins Youth Foundation in partnership with Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital. The Sled Wings will be honored during Saturday night’s Broadmoor Trophy Championship Game.

Northern Michigan used a 5-2-1 month to jump into home ice position en-tering the final weekend of the WCHA’s regular season, and Shine’s league-best 11 points was a big reason why. The junior from Pickney, Mich. regis-tered at least one point in all eight February contests and will enter March on a nine-game point streak. He tied for ninth nationally for points, tied for 13th with a WCHA-best 1.38 goals-per-game and tied for 11th with a WCHA-high seven assists. While the Wildcats enjoyed their best month of the sea-son, Shine factored in three game-winning goals (scoring the game-winning marker Feb. 19 against Alabama Huntsville and assisting on scores Feb. 13 at Ferris State and Feb. 20 against UAH). He also had a three-point effort (2g-1a) in a 5-4 win Feb. 6 at Alaska Anchorage. Shine is tied for third in the WCHA for overall scoring with 29 points (14g-15a), while tying for second in the conference scoring race with 25 points (12g-13a).

Also nominated:• Mark Cooper, Sr., F, Bowling Green (helped the Falcons go 4-3-0,

clinch home ice and remain in the MacNaughton Cup chase by tallying four goals and three assists)

• Gordon Defiel, So., G, Lake Superior State (led WCHA goaltenders with a .939 save percentage and ranked second with a 1.65 goals-against average, finishing the month on a 3-1-1 run to push LSSU into the league playoffs)

Petan was a driving force behind Michigan Tech’s run to a share of its first conference championship since 1976, pacing the WCHA in league play with 16 goals and 29 points (13 assists). The senior from Delta, British Columbia recorded a point in 19 of his 27 conference games, including seven multi-point efforts. The Huskies’ co-captain was terrific during Tech’s 10-1-3 WCHA binge after Dec. 11, tallying 15 points and netting four game-winning goals among his 10 overall markers. Petan enters the 2016 Final Five with 33 points overall, including a league-high 18 goals.

Rookie of the YearCorey Mackin, F, Ferris State

Mackin lived up to his preseason prognostication as the league’s top rookie, leading WCHA freshmen with 21 points (9g-12) in league play and 23 points (9g-14a) overall entering the 2016 Final Five. The Philadelphia, Pa. native also paced league rookies with his nine goals, while finishing his first regular season with a +6 rating (+8 in WCHA games). Mackin found his name on the scoresheet in half (14) of his inaugural 28 league contests, while he factored in the game-winning goal (scoring or assisting) in six of Ferris State’s 13 WCHA victories.

Defensive Player of the YearCasey Nelson, Jr., D, Minnesota State

Nelson has been the backbone of a Minnesota State defense that has allowed the fewest shots on goal per game in the NCAA (20.67) and ranks eighth nationally by yielding just 1.97 goals per game, while also contributing mightily on the offensive end. The junior from Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. led all WCHA defensemen (second among all players) with a +16 rating in his 27 league games, while also pacing blue-liners with 71 shots on goal and tying for fourth with 15 points (4g-11a). Nelson enters the 2016 Final Five ranked fouth among league d-men with 21 points overall (five goals), while his 16 assists are tied for ninth among all players and his +13 rating is tied for seventh.

Outstanding Student-Athlete of the YearJamie Phillips, Sr., G, Michigan Tech

The senior has an overall 3.52 grade-point average, will graduate in May 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and has plans to attend medical school in his native Canada. A finalist for the 2015-16 Senior CLASS Award, Phillips has been involved with numerous community programs, including volunteer work with Houghton-area youth gymnastics and hockey teams. On the ice, the Winnipeg Jets’ draftee ranks ninth nationally with a .729 winning percentage (23-7-5) and 14th with a 2.00 goals-against average. Phillips, among the nominees for the 2016 Mike Richter Award, also has a .921 save percentage in over 2,200 minutes in net.

Coach of the YearMel Pearson, Michigan Tech

Pearson and Michigan Tech brought the MacNaughton Cup back to its ancestral home in Copper Country for the first time in 40 years, as the fifth-year bench boss guided the Huskies to a share of their first WCHA regular season championship since the 1975-76 season. He also became the first Tech coach to record consecutive 20-win seasons since the legendary John MacInnes. This is Pearson’s second Coach of the Year accolade, as he also was recognized following his first season in 2011-12.

• Bowling Green came back from a first-game loss to defeat Bemidji State in their best-of-three WCHA Tournament first round series with wins of 7-2 and 3-1 in the final two games. BGSU has now won a best-of-three playoff series in six consecutive years, including all three as members of the WCHA.

• BGSU has won back-to-back games to overcome 1-0 deficits in best-of-three series four times in the last six seasons. The Falcons are now 8-0 all-time in the third game of best-of-threes, including 5-0 under head coach Chris Bergeron.

• Bowling Green will be seeking their first-ever win this weekend in the WCHA Final Five. In 2014, they lost a semifinal 4-0 to Minnesota State. Last season, the Falcons fell 5-2 in a semifinal against Michigan Tech.

• Freshman Stephen Baylis posted a goal and three assists during the playoff series against Bemidji State. Those four points are tied for the most postseason points among WCHA players this season. He now has 14 points in his last eight games and is second among WCHA rookies with 22 points. His seven-game points streak which ended Sunday night is the career longest for any current BGSU player.

• Sophomore defenseman Mark Friedman had two goals and three points on Saturday during BGSU’s 7-2 win over Bemidji State. That represents his career-best for a single game in both categories. He is tied with teammate Sean Walker for most points (23) among WCHA defensemen.

• Sophomore goalie Chris Nell saved 93 of 99 shots during the three game series against Bemidji State and led WCHA goalies with a .939 save percentage during the first round of the playoffs. In BGSU’s two wins, he saved 72 of 75 shots. Nell leads the WCHA overall in save percentage (.931) and is third in goals against average (1.91). He has given up just 67 goals in 35 starts and two or fewer in 25 of those.

• Junior forward Kevin Dufour scored three points last weekend against Bemidji State. Two of those occurred on Saturday, as he posted an assist and the game-winning goal. He has five goals and two assists in his last seven games and is tied for eighth in the WCHA with 14 goals.

• Senior forward Mark Cooper continues to lead BGSU’s offense. He scored two goals and an assist against Bemidji State and now leads the Falcons with 16 goals and 31 points. He is third and fifth among WCHA players in those categories. Cooper has six career playoff points, tied for most on the BGSU roster.

• Bowling Green’s power play unit was outstanding against Bemidji State. After a 1-for-5 performance on Friday, the Falcons combined to go 5-for-7 for the remainder of the series while playing the fourth-ranked penalty kill team in the country. BGSU’s four power play goals on Saturday were their most in a single game since Nov. 9, 2007.

• BGSU’s first opponent in the WCHA Final Five is Minnesota State. The Falcons were 1-1-2 against the Mavericks this season. They had a pair of 2-2 ties in Bowling Green last December, then split a series in Mankato, Minn. in February. BGSU won the most recent meeting 3-1.

• Cooper has a pair of two-goal games against Minnesota State this season. Matt Pohlkamp earned four assists in the four games against MSU, while Baylis had a goal and an assist in BGSU’s 3-1 road win over the Mavericks.

• BGSU finished the 2015-16 season with a 12-5-5 record at the BGSU Ice Arena. The Falcons now have 36 home victories in the last three seasons, the most in a three-season span for Bowling Green since 41 during the 1994-95 to 1996-97 seasons.

• FSU junior forward Kyle Schempp scored a power play goal at 12:34 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie and put Ferris State ahead for good in Game 1. The Bulldogs also got goals from junior defenseman Ryan Lowney and junior forward Jared VanWormer in the victory, while freshman netminder Darren Smith made 27 saves in the win.

• In Game 2, FSU junior forward Gerald Mayhew scored two power play goals in a span of just 37 seconds to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead for Ferris State. Mayhew’s second strike turned out to be the game-winner with four minutes remaining in the third, his 13th goal of the year. McDonald scored FSU’s first goal of the game and added two assists in the win.

• The sweep was the first of the season for the Bulldogs at home in Big Rapids. The only other sweep for FSU this year came at Alaska in Fairbanks Feb. 5-6.

• The Bulldogs will take on Michigan Tech at 7:37 p.m. on Friday night in the second semi-final at the Final Five. In FSU’s previous Final Five appearances in 2014 and 2015, the team has produced a 1-2 record, defeating Alaska Anchorage in the 2014 semifinals and falling to Minnesota State in the 2014 title game and the 2015 semis.

• During the 2015-16 season, Ferris State and Michigan Tech have met four times, playing to a 2-2-0 series split. The meetings came in a span of three weekends on Oct. 16-17 and 30-31. Michigan Tech won both Friday night contests, 5-1 in Big Rapids and a 5-4 overtime finish in Houghton, while Ferris State had two Saturday triumphs, both by the score of 3-2.

• The top-seeded Michigan Tech Huskies take on Ferris State in the second semifinal at the 2016 WCHA Final Five with puck-drop scheduled for 7:37 p.m. ET. The Huskies are looking to advance to their second straight Broadmoor Trophy championship game after playing in last year’s contest vs. Minnesota State at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.

• Tech is appearing in its seventh WCHA Final Five and third of the Mel Pearson era. The Huskies have previously advanced to the event in 1993 (participant), 1994 (fourth), 1996 (second), 2007 (participant), 2012 (participant) and 2015 (second). Michigan Tech boasts nine WCHA playoff championships all-time, with the most recent coming in 1981.

• Tonight’s contest marks the 26th all-time meeting between the Huskies and Ferris State and fifth of 2015-16. Tech owns a 14-10-1 edge in the series and the teams are 2-2-0 this year after splitting at Ferris State (Oct. 16-17) and in Houghton (Oct. 30-31).

• Seven Tech players and head coach Mel Pearson were honored last week by the league when it announced its annual awards. Senior co-captain Alex Petan took home WCHA Player of the Year Honors, while goaltender Jamie Phillips was named the Outstanding Student-Athlete and Pearson claimed Coach of the Year recognition. Petan was also named to the All-WCHA First Team. Phillips and Matt Roy earned spots on the All-WCHA Second Team, while three Huskies - Malcolm Gould, Tyler Heinonen and Shane Hanna - werre All-WCHA Third Team honorees. Freshman center Jake Lucchini was named to the WCHA All-Rookie Team.

• Petan was named a finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award on Wednesday, giving Tech back-to-back Hobey finalists for the first time ever. Petan is the fourth Husky to make the Hobey top-10 list, joining Jamie Ram (1994), Colin Murphy (2005) and Tanner Kero (2015).

• Pearson has led the Huskies to back-to-back 20-win seasons, the first Michigan Tech coach to hit the 20-win mark in back-to-back years since John MacInnes. Pearson enters tonight with 95 career victories, good for second all-time among Tech head coaches.

• Phillips, who already boasts the program’s all-time shutout record with 10, can tie the Tech career victories mark tonight. Bruce Horsch is the all-time leader in that category with 58 wins from 1974-78.

• Tech is 21-0-2 when it finds the back of the net three or more times, including a 7-0-0 record when scoring three goals, a 5-0-2 mark when scoring four and a perfect 9-0-0 record when notching five or more goals in a game. On the flip side, the Huskies have struggled to win hockey games when its opponent buries three or more times (4-8-2 this season).

• Michigan Tech is 14-2-4 since Dec. 11 after starting the season 9-6-1, including a 12-1-3 mark vs. the WCHA.

• MTU is 21-6-3 over its last 30 games vs. teams from #PureMichigan. That stretch includes six series sweeps and a 10-4-1 mark this season.

• Tech is 15-2-1 when leading after one period and 19-2-1 when carrying a lead into the second intermission.

• Michigan Tech is 12-0-1 when Joel L’Esperance scores a goal and 12-1-2 when Petan finds the back of the net. The Huskies also boast a 12-1-2 mark when Hanna records an assist.

• The Huskies are 12-4-4 away from the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena this season, including a 2-1-1 mark in neutral site games.

• Tech owns a 10-3-3 record in Friday games and are 5-1-2 on Fridays since Jan. 1.
