VAN ANDEL ARENA GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. MARCH 18-19 2016 OPENING FACE-OFF Falcons and Mavericks in Top 20: After playing to a pair of 2-2 draws last weekend, two teams with seven-game unbeaten streaks - Bowling Green (5-0-2) and Minnesota State (3-0-4) are the WCHA representatives in the national polls. The Falcons are No. 14 in both the USCHO.com and USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine rankings, while the Mavericks - who are 8-2-4 in their last 14 contests - are back in the USCHO.com poll (No. 20) for the first time since the second week of the season. Two additional WCHA teams - Michigan Tech and Alaska Anchorage - are receiving votes in the USCHO.com poll. Competitive Balance: Nearing the halfway point of the league schedule (this weekend marks the exact half-way point, after which 70 of the 140 games will have been played), seven teams are .500 or better in WCHA play. The standings reflect a tightly-contested circuit in which every night brings a challenge: Only four points separate the top four teams, while an additional four points mean the difference between fourth place (and home ice for the WCHA playoffs) and eighth place. A Superior Turn: The owner of the WCHA's second-best winning percentage in conference play since the calendar turned to November? None other than Lake Superior State, which has gone 4-1-3 (.688) in its last eight league games. Led by sophomore Gordon Defiel (league-best 1.38 conference GAA since Nov. 1) and freshman Nick Kossoff (36-save shutout this past Saturday), LSSU has yielded just 10 goals over that eight-game span for a league-best 1.25 per-game average. The Lakers, who swept Alaska in Fairbanks this past weekend, are unbeaten in WCHA road games this year (3-0-3). No Place Like...the Road?: Alaska Anchorage (at Michigan Tech) and Lake Superior State (at Alaska) posted road sweeps last weekend, lifting road teams to an overall 27-21-12 mark through the first 60 WCHA games. "Madhouse on Mercer": Bowling Green has made sure its home arena has lived up to the moniker, with a 13-game home unbeaten streak (9-0-4) that is the longest current run in the country. The Falcons are 5-0-4 on home ice this season and are 15-3-5 in their last 23 home contests. Elsewhere Around the WCHA: UAH snapped a seven-game winless skid last Saturday with a 1-1 tie behind a season-best 36 saves by Carmine Guerriero...At 8-6-2, UAA has already equaled its victory total from last season (8-22-4) and, with 11 league points, is one shy of matching its 2014-15 output...UAF Alternate Captain Zach Frye is tied for the lead among WCHA defensemen with 11 points (2g-9a)...BSU, which is 3-1-1 in its last five games, is sixth nationally in combined special teams at 55.9 percent (including 13 power play goals at home, tied with Penn State for the most)...In all seven of its WCHA series, FSU has earned two points...MTU is riding a six-game road unbeaten streak (5-0-1)...MSU freshman G Jason Pawloski is undefeated (5-0-4) and leads all NCAA rookies with a 1.75 GAA...NMU has skated to an NCAA-high six ties. BY THE NUMBERS 7: Consecutive games with a goal by Tyler Heinonen, the longest by a Michigan Tech player since Gord Salt scored in 10-straight during the 1978-79 season. He is tied for second nationally with eight goals since the streak began Nov. 14. THE WEEK AHEAD Final WCHA League Games of 2015: This weekend's full slate of five WCHA series marks the final conference games of the 2015 calendar year. After Saturday, only UAH's two-game nonconference set with Colorado College on Dec. 18-19 remain prior to the Holiday Tournaments (MTU and NMU at the Great Lakes Invitational, Dec. 29-30; LSSU at the Catamount Cup, Dec. 29-30 and FSU at the Mariucci Classic, Jan. 1-2). The WCHA schedule will resume with a single series Jan. 2-3, before a four-series weekend Jan. 8-9. Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup and Michigan Rivalries Highlight Weekend: Alaska Anchorage hosts Alaska at the Sullivan Arena in the first two games of the annual Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup, won by the Nanooks six-years running. All four Michigan schools will stay in the state this weekend, with UP rivals Michigan Tech and Lake Superior State meeting in Sault Ste. Marie, and Northern Michigan welcoming Ferris State. Chargers-Mavericks and Falcons-Beavers: The other two WCHA series this weekend take place in Minnesota, as Alabama Huntsville visits 20th-ranked Minnesota State and Bemidji State hosts No. 14 Bowling Green.

• Northern Michigan skated to a win and tie against host Alabama Huntsville in another tightly-contested series.

• Lake Superior State earned its first road sweep since Feb. 2014, scoring all six of its goals from special teams play en route to a pair of victories at Alaska.

• Meeting for the first time since the 2015 WCHA playoffs, Bemidji State and Ferris State split a pair of taut defensive contests in Big Rapids.

• Alaska Anchorage twice erased 2-1, third-period deficits to earn a series sweep in Houghton over No. 17 Michigan Tech.

• Full recaps, box scores and select video highlights are available online at wcha.com.

Minnesota State 2, at No. 14 Bowling Green 2 – OTMinnesota State 2, at No. 14 Bowling Green 2 – OTDec. 4 and 5 at BGSU Ice Arena; Bowling Green, Ohio In a series between two of the top three teams in the WCHA standings, both Minnesota State and No. 14 Bowling Green came away with two points each following a pair of 2-2 ties at the BGSU Ice Arena. Minnesota State got off to a great start Friday night, riding first-period goals by Zeb Knutson and Michael Huntebrinker to a 2-0 lead that they carried deep into the third period. However, Bowling Green finally got things going in the last five minutes of regulation, when Brandon Hawkins found the back of the net to cut the lead to 2-1 at the 16:18 mark. Going a man down with under a minute left, the Falcons pulled their goaltender to make it 5-on-5 hockey and, with just 6.7 seconds left in regulation, Ben Murphy scored to force overtime. MSU held a 3-1 advantage in shots, but neither team could score as BGSU's Chris Nell (33 saves) and the Mavericks' Jason Pawloski (19 stops) held serve. Saturday’s rematch ended with the same results, but this time it was Minnesota State that had to come from behind. A two-goal night from BGSU's Mark Cooper put Bowling Green ahead 2-1 heading into the third period. But, 7:34 into the final stanza, Knutson scored on the power play to even the game and force the eventual 2-2 draw. Pawloski (31 saves) and Nell (22 stops) again had excellent performances between the pipes.

Northern Michigan 4, at Alabama Huntsville 3Northern Michigan 1, at Alabama Huntsville 1 – OTDec. 4 and 5 at Van Braun Center; Huntsville, Alabama Northern Michigan skated to a win and tie against host Alabama Huntsville in another tightly-contested series. Scoring went back-and-forth between the two teams during the Friday night series opener. The game was not decided until 19:43 of the third period, when Dominik Shine was issued a short-handed penalty shot that he converted to complete a hat trick on the night and give the Wildcats a 4-3 victory. Alabama Huntsville outshot Northern Michigan 47-22 in the contest, but NMU goaltender Atte Tolvanen made an impressive 44 shots to keep the Wildcats in the game. Max McHugh, Chad Brears and Jetlan Houcher all scored for the Chargers, while NMU's Darren Nowick had a game-tying goal in the third period. Trailing 1-0 after John Siemer scored for the Wildcats just over four minutes into the second period Saturday night, the Chargers evened the contest with an early third-period goal from Frank Misuraca -- his first of the season. Northern Michigan outshot Alabama Huntsville 15-3 in the third period alone, but was unable to convert as Chargers' junior G Carmine Guerriero made a season-high 36 saves.

Lake Superior State 4, at Alaska 2Lake Superior State 2, at Alaska 0Dec. 4 and 5 at Carlson Center; Fairbanks, Alaska Lake Superior State earned its first road sweep since Feb. 2014, scoring all six of its goals from special teams play en route to a pair of victories at Alaska. All four Laker goals Friday night came from special teams, including a short-handed goal during the second period from Diego Cuglietta that was the eventual game-winner. A power-play goal from Chad Staley got the Nanooks within one during the third period, but the Lakers' special teams capitalized once again on the power play when Gus Correale made it a 4-2 lead that UAF could not come back from. Alex Globke and Anthony Nellis scored the other LSSU goals, while Justin Woods lit the lamp for the Nanooks. The Lakers held on to a 1-0 lead throughout most of Saturday's game, partially in thanks to the efforts of freshman netminder Nick Kossoff, who stopped all 36 shots that he faced - including 19 in the first period alone - for his second career shutout. Fellow rookie Gage Torrel scored the first goal for the Lakers while short-handed during the second period and J.T. Henke sealed the victory with an empty-netter.

Bemidji State 2, at Ferris State 0at Ferris State 2, Bemidji State 1Dec. 4 and 5 at Ewigleben Ice Arena; Big Rapids, Mich. Meeting for the first time since the 2015 WCHA playoffs, Bemidji State and Ferris State split a pair of taut defensive contests in Big Rapids. Bemidji State scored the only two goals on Friday night en route to a 2-0 victory. The shots were even at 25 apiece, but the Bulldogs could not solve Bemidji State netminder Michael Bitzer, who stopped all 25 shots he faced. BSU's Brendan Harms scored in the first period for the game-winner, while Markus Gerbrandt scored with 2:35 remaining in regulation to seal the win. For the second straight night, the Beavers got on the board first when Jordan Heller scored his first goal of the season during Saturday night's first period. The FSU power play came up big in the second period, as Gerald Mayhew tallied his fourth goal of the year and tied the game up 1-1. The tie stood until 14:28 of the third period, when Andrew Dorantes made a great play to get the puck to Corey Mackin, who scored to give the Bulldogs a late 2-1 lead and a win on home ice. FSU goaltender Charles Williams, making his first appearance since Nov. 14, stopped 30-of-31 shots for the victory.

Alaska Anchorage 3, at No. 17 Michigan Tech 2Alaska Anchorage 3, at No. 17 Michigan Tech 2Dec. 4 and 5 at John MacInnes Student Ice Arena; Houghton, Mich. Alaska Anchorage twice erased 2-1, third-period deficits to earn a series sweep in Houghton over No. 17 Michigan Tech. The Huskies looked to have the momentum in Friday night’s series opener, going up 2-1 and outshooting the Seawolves 25-12 after the first two periods. Alaska Anchorage was able to rally back with two goals of their own, including the game-winner by Tad Kozun with just 1:21 remaining, to win 3-2. UAA freshman Sean MacTavish scored the Seawolves' first two goals, including the tying marker at the 11:49 mark of the third period, while Olivier Mantha made 32 saves. Alex Petan and Tyler Heinonen both scored second-period goals for Michigan Tech. The Seawolves found themselves down by a goal heading into the third period once again during Saturday night’s series finale. Chase Van Allen started the UAA rally with a game-tying goal just 38 seconds into the final stanza, before Brad Duwe found the back of the net for an unassisted goal that put the Seawolves up 3-2 at the 14:49 mark. Mantha (24 saves) once again held off the last-minute offensive surge from Michigan Tech to help secure the win and sweep. Heinonen and Jarret Brown scored the Huskies' goals, while Matt Wintjes made 24 saves in his first start of the season.

Shine almost single-handedly led Northern Mich-igan to a 4-3 victory last Friday night at Alabama Huntsville, giving the Wildcats the lead with each of his three goals – including the game-winner on a short-handed penalty shot with just 17 seconds remaining in regulation. The junior from Pinck-ney, Mich. scored twice in the first period, open-ing the game’s scoring at the 8:17 mark and then putting NMU ahead 2-1 at the 15:21 mark. Shine then completed his first career hat trick in dramat-ic style: With the Wildcats on the penalty kill and under a minute remaining in the third period, he picked off a UAH pass, raced the other way on a breakaway and, after he was tripped up, converted on the tie-breaking penalty shot at the 19:43 mark. Shine added four shots on goal during Saturday’s game, in which NMU earned a 1-1 tie and three-point weekend. Mantha backstopped Alaska Anchorage to an im-pressive road sweep at then-No. 17 Michigan Tech, negating the Huskies’ overall 66-45 advantage in shots by making 62 saves in a pair of 3-2 Seawolves’ victories. Friday night, UAA was outshot by a 34-18 margin; however, Mantha turned aside 32 shots. The sophomore from La Tuque, Quebec followed that up with a 30-save effort Saturday as UAA completed the sweep. The Seawolves erased 2-1, third-period deficits in both games by twice scoring a pair of final-stanza goals; Mantha stopped all 17 third-period shots he faced Friday and Saturday to help propel and maintain the UAA comebacks.

Torrel contributed a three-point weekend – tops among WCHA rookies – in helping Lake Superior State to its first road sweep since Feb. 21-22, 2014. The freshmen from Monticello, Minn. factored in both Lakers’ goals during a 2-0, sweep-clinching victory Saturday at Alaska. Torrel broke a score-less tie with a short-handed strike at the 18:41 mark of the second period for his first collegiate game-winning goal, and then assisted on a Lakers’ empty-net strike that sealed the victory. Torrel also assisted on a second-period, power-play goal Friday night that drew LSSU even at 1-1 en route to an eventual 4-2 victory.

• Lake Superior State returns home to face Michigan Tech this weekend, following a road sweep over Alaska last weekend.

• The Lakers defeated the Nanooks 4-2 on Friday night and 2-0 Saturday to ensure their first series sweep since sweeping Bemidji Sate at home last season on Jan. 16-17, 2015.

• The win also give the Lakers their first three-game winning streak dating back to last season following the Lakers sweep over the Beavers and defeating Bowling Green in the series opener the following weekend (1/23).

• The sweep in Alaska also marked the first time since Feb. 21-22, 2014 that the Lakers pulled off a road sweep (Alabama Huntsville). It also marked the first time since the 1996-97 season that the Lakers swept the Nanooks in Fairbanks, when both teams were members of the CCHA.

• The Lakers moved up in the WCHA standings with UAA for a tie at 6th place. • Gage Torrel led Lakers scorers with a goal and a pair of assists on the

weekend. Torrel assisted on goals in both games and scored a shorthanded game-winning goal in Saturday’s 2-0 victory.

• Torrel is now tied with Mitch Hults (4-5--9) for second on the Lakers in scoring. The fellow freshman standout, Hults, had a pair of assists on the weekend.

• Junior forward Alex Globke (4-2--6) scored a power-play goal to open the scoring for the Lakers on Friday night and marked his second-straight game with a goal. Globke has scored three goals in his last five games. All three goals have come while the Lakers were on the power play.

• Sophomore J.T. Henke continues to lead the Lakers in scoring with 6-5--11 after tallying an assist on Friday and cementing the sweep with an empty net goal on Saturday with four seconds remaining.

• All six of the Lakers goals last weekend came from special teams play. The Lakers scored four power-play goals and two shorthanded goals.

• Sophomore goaltender Gordon Defiel was sharp in Friday’s 4-2 victory, making 26 saves in securing his fourth victory of the season. Defiel is sporting a 2.57 goals against average to go along with a respectable .922 saves percentage.

• Since the start of November, Defiel has a league-best .953 saves percentage and a second-best 1.58 GAA. Defiel has gone 3-2-3 since the start of November, winning his last two starts. He is 3-1-1 in his last five games.

• Owen Headrick (3-4--7) added a pair of assists on the weekend and now leads all freshmen defensemen in league scoring. Headrick leads all rookie defensemen in power-play: goals (2), assists (4), and points (6).

• The Lakers lead the WCHA in second period goals with 20.• The Lakers rank 4th in power-play percentage with a 17.8 clip this season,

after going 4-for-10 (40 percent) against Alaska last weekend.• The Lakers are tied with Minnesota State for the nation’s lead in power play

opportunities with 90 attempts this season. The Lakers have been on the penalty kill 76 times this season, the 4th-highest nationally.

• The penalty kill continues to ranks 2nd among WCHA teams with a success rate of 85.5 percent. The Lakers have scored three shorthanded goals.

• The Lakers defense has blocked 232 shots this season to rank second in the league behind only Ferris State (260). The Lakers are blocking 12.89 shots per game on average.

• LSSU freshmen continue to lead the league’s freshmen classes in combined goals with 19 and assists with 33. The freshmen have combined for the 5th highest point output by a freshman group in the nation.

• The Lakers freshman class is tied with the Seawolves sophomore class for the league’s most goals by a class with 19 and leads the league in points by a class with 52 points combined (19-33--52).

• Michigan Tech closes out the first half of its 2015-16 Western Collegiate Hockey Association schedule this weekend with a trip to play U.P. rival Lake Superior State. The Huskies and Lakers haven’t squared off in over one year, with the most recent meeting taking place Oct. 4-5, 2014, at LSSU.

• Friday's game is the 63rd all-time meeting between Tech and Lake State in a series that dates back to the 1969-70 campaign. The Huskies own a 37-21-4 advantage in rivalry, including a 13-10-3 mark on the road and a 4-1-0 record over the last five games. Michigan Tech opened last season with a two-game sweep over the host Lakers, the start of a 10-0-0 run to begin the year.

• The Huskies will look to continue their recent stretch of success against in-state competition, as they’ve compiled a 15-5-2 mark over the last 22 games vs. programs from #PureMichigan. That run includes five sweeps, nine wins on the road and a 9-2-1 record during the 2014-15 campaign.

• Michigan Tech has 18 players with game experience against the Lakers, including senior captain Alex Petan who has a team-high nine points (4-5) vs. LSSU. Petan, Reid Sturos, Dylan Steman, Alex Gillies and Joel L’Esperance all average a point-per-game or better in their careers against Lake Superior State, while goaltender Jamie Phillips is 4-1-0 with a 1.73 goals against average and .930 save percentage in 278 minutes of work.

• Michigan Tech is on an impressive run away from the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena this season. In nine road games, the Huskies are 6-2-1 and are currently riding a six-game unbeaten streak and have scored an average of 3.33 goals-per-game. MTU’s 30 goals in nine road outings ranks first in the WCHA and is the third-highest total in the nation. Tech is 21-7-1 away from home dating back to last season.

• The Huskies have been consistently good in the first game of weekend sets during the 2015-16 campaign. Tech is 6-2-0 in the first game of a series and has posted a 5-2-0 mark on Friday nights. Perhaps even more impressive is MTU’s ability to win its first game on the road, which it has done in four of five series openers. The Huskies’ .714 winning percentage on Fridays is tied for the best in the league and is the 11th-best percentage nationally.

• With a veteran cast of defensemen and one of the best goaltenders in all of college hockey, it’s no surprise that Michigan Tech is unbeaten when scoring three or more times in a game (the Huskies own a 7-0-1 mark when they reach the three-goal plateau). On the reverse side, Tech has struggled to win games when its opponent notches three or more - the Huskies are 2-6-1 when it surrenders three-plus.

• The Huskies have enjoyed big contributions from their upperclassmen during the first half of the season. Through 16 games, Tech’s seniors have combined for a WCHA-high 40 points (16-24) while the team’s juniors are second among junior classes in the league with 41 points (18-23). Michigan Tech’s 16 upperclassmen (seven seniors, nine juniors) have combined 81 points - the highest combined total in the WCHA and the 12th-best total in all of NCAA Division I college hockey.

• Michigan Tech is once again one of the leaders in nearly all statistical categories among WCHA programs. The Huskies rank first in scoring (3.00 goals/game), scoring margin (plus-10) and power-play efficiency (14-for-56, 25 percent). Tech is also in the top-half among WCHA foes in team defense (2.38 goals against/game) and shots on goal margin (plus-133).

• Junior winger Tyler Heinonen is on one of the most impressive runs in Michigan Tech hockey history. Heinonen is currently riding a seven-game goal streak, the longest such streak since Gord Salt scored in 10 straight during the 1978-79 season.

• Dominik Shine completed his first career hat trick in style Friday, potting his first game-winning goal since Oct. 17, 2014 on a penalty shot with 17 seconds remaining. The last Northern Michigan skater to convert on a penalty shot was Erik Higby Feb. 1, 2014 in a 5-1 loss to Minnesota State.

• Shine, who had never enjoyed a multi-goal effort entering the night, is the second Wildcat to net a hat trick this season, joining Robbie Payne, who pulled off the feat in a 6-3 win over Lake Superior State Oct. 16. Entering the 2015-16 campaign, the last Northern Michigan player to score a hat trick was Darren Nowick March 3, 2014 in a 5-2 win at Alabama-Huntsville.

• Over the weekend, Shine led the WCHA in goals (3) and tied four other players for the league lead in points (3). Among WCHA skaters who took at least five shots on net over the weekend, his shot percentage of .333 ranked first.

• Connor Frantti recorded his first collegiate point with the lone helper on Nowick's game-tying goal Friday. He also notched an assist Saturday.

• Atte Tolvanen once again faced the most shots in the WCHA over the weekend, 10 more than the second-place keeper. Overall, Tolvanen ranks second in the WCHA in save percentage (.933) and fourth in goals against average (2.21).

• In 2013-14, John Siemer led all Wildcat newcomers with seven goals, which was good for fourth on the team. He took a step back as a sophomore, only netting three despite skating in 34 games, 13 more than he did as a freshman. This year, through the first 16 games, he holds the team lead with six goals, four of which were the first Northern Michigan strike of the game.

• To date, 50 of the 60 Division I teams have skated to at least one draw. The Wildcats lead the nation with six, one more than second-place Bowling Green.
