5 01: TEAM LOTUS BRIEF HISTORY
The legendary Team Lotus name has
returned to Formula One for the 2011
season, but to trace the roots of the
return of one of world sports most
iconic names we have to go back to
2009. On September 12th 2009 the
team, then known as Lotus Racing, wasofficially born when the FIA granted its
entry into the 2010 FIA Formula One
World Championship. Headed up by Team
Principal Tony Fernandes and Deputy
Team Principals Kamarudin Meranun
and SM Nasarudin, supported by Chief
Technical Officer Mike Gascoyne and
Chief Executive Riad Asmat, the teammade its base in Hingham, Norfolk, near
the original home of Team Lotus and set
about its 2010 challenge of winning the
battle of the new teams in Formula One.
Stepping back even further, the teams
origins began before September 2009, with
Tony and fellow shareholders Kamarudin
Meranun and SM Nasarudin leading
a consortium of Malaysian business
interests who joined forces to provide
initial funding for the nascent team under
the parent company 1Malaysia Racing Sdn
Bhd. Tony immediately began appointing
key senior management positions,
including Riad Asmat as Chief Executive
Officer and Keith Saunt as Chief Operating
Officer, while Mike Gascoyne began work
on the technical program in the UK andacross Europe.
As the team moved into its new Hingham
home, work began immediately on
building the 2010 cars with Mike directing
the technical efforts across centres
of excellence in design, wind tunnel,
composite manufacturing and a host of
ancillary support services throughout
Europe in an intensive effort to be ready
for the rapidly approaching season ahead.
With the car build process under way, a
similar effort was also being undertaken
in creating the team itself, with new staff
being taken on every day, and the fabric
of the teams identity being created
from scratch.
In December 2009 one of the firstmajor milestones was reached, with a
ceremony in Kuala Lumpur unveiling the
first Lotus Racing drivers - Italys Jarno
Trulli, Finlands Heikki Kovalainen and
Malaysias Fairuz Fauzy as third driver. The
combination of race winning experience,
determination and passion gave the team
a good platform from which to establish
the true pace of the car and have a
fighting chance of exceeding expectations
in the season ahead.

6 01: TEAM LOTUS BRIEF HISTORY
December brought the UKs worst winter
for 30 years and as staff numbers at the
Hingham factory grew work continued
apace on preparations for the forthcoming
season. Jarno, Heikki and Fairuz all spent
time in snowy Norfolk, having their seats
fitted and familiarising themselves with
their new Race Engineers, pit crews and
support staff. Chassis 01 passed all its
crash tests in early January and soon
afterwards was back at the factory for
the engineers and mechanics to start
work on the cars build process. As the
teams hours in the factory increased,
a modern F1 car began to take shape,
and by early February the months of hard
work culminated in the first Cosworth
engine fire up in the factory.
Two days after that momentous first
engine fire up the now 130 strong staff
gathered in the factorys race bays for
a first view of the car in its final buildspecification. As the final pieces of
bodywork were fixed in place, the Lotus
Racing team saw had their first look at the
cars green and yellow livery, bringing to
mind some of motor racings most iconic
images and leaving everyone involved
with the impression that not only was the
car beautiful, but also would exceed the
expectations of motor racing fans around
the world.
The next day the team moved to a
very cold and snowy Silverstone for
shakedown a day where system checks
and engineering procedures worked in
harmony to finally see the Lotus Cosworth
T127, as it had by then been designated,
break cover on track, with Malaysias
Fairuz Fauzy at the wheel. There was hugeinterest in this test from fans and media
alike, and at the end of the 2010 season
Autosport, the motorsport industry bible,
reported that a spy-shot of the T127
at the shakedown was its most viewed
image of the whole year.
Having successfully completed the
shakedown, the team and nearly 500
guests gathered in London in February
2010 at the prestigious Royal Horticultural
Halls to see Tony, Mike, Jarno, Heikki and

public. Among the guests were some true
legends of the sport, including Sir Stirling
Moss and Nigel Mansell, as well as the
massed ranks of the worlds media, thereto see the car that would be competing
around the world in the 2010 Formula
One World Championship. The team
received a huge vote of praise at the
event, in the subsequent press coverage
and feedback from fans around the world,
proving they had made the right choice
in terms of the driver line-up, strategic
goals and, most importantly to many fans,
the colour scheme a green and yellow

the team is fully aware of its
place, standing on the shoulders of
motorsport giants.
Barely taking time to breathe, Lotus
Racing then moved on to the pre-season
tests, the first time the cars would run in
anger only five months after the teams
inception. Straight after the tests it was
destination Bahrain for the season opening
race. On March 12th, exactly six months
to the day since gaining their entry to
the 2010 Championship, Lotus Racing
recorded another milestone this time
seeing both cars out on track in Friday
practice for the first time. The weekend
ended with both cars being classified
Heikki finishing 15th and Jarno 17th after
an extremely emotional weekend brought
a dream conclusion. Having both cars
classified earned the team huge respect
across the motorsport world, and this
respect grew throughout the season as
the team took charge of the battle of the
new teams, a lead they comfortably held
onto throughout the 19 race season.
At the last race of 2010 in Abu DhabiLotus Racing was confirmed in tenth place
in the Championship, securing the best
new team title. Alongside this success
on track the team continued to go from
strength to strength off track with the
total number of staff now over 220,
including 30 Malaysian staff based in the
UK and Malaysia working in the design
office, marketing and the commercial
team. A few notable incidents took place
in the latter half of the year, with Heikki
and Mark Webber coming together in
spectacular fashion in Valencia, Heikki
earning a new nickname FireMan for his
heroic fire-fighting exploits in Singapore
and then recording the teams best result
of the season in the incident-packed
Japanese Grand Prix when car 19 came
home in 12th place. That result, anda very strong end to the season from
both drivers, was enough to secure
that all important tenth place in the
2010 Championship, sparking off major
celebrations for the team at the season-
ending race in Abu Dhabi.
By that point a number of other significant
changes had taken place in the team, all
of which will help the Anglo-Malaysian
squad take the next steps forward in their
long-term challenge to reach the top. For

the 2011 season and beyond the cars
are powered by Renault engines, as used
by the Championship winning Red Bull
Racing team in 2010, and the similarities
with Red Bull extend to the new gearbox
and hydraulic systems package that
will be bolted onto the Renault engines
powering Team Lotus in 2011, supplied
by Red Bull Technology and giving theteam an incredibly powerful, reliable and
aerodynamically efficient new powertrain
that will help it take the fight to the
established teams from the start of the
2011 season.
Another demonstration of Team Lotus
commitment to providing aspiring
motorsport talent from around the
world with the opportunity to join the
Team Lotus dream is the establishment
of a dedicated demonstration team in
Malaysia. This team, who will run showcars
at events around the ASEAN region and
will be launched before the Malaysian
Grand Prix 2011, gives a chance for
young mechanics, engineers and ancillary
support staff to learn and perfect their
skills with a running car, giving them aninvaluable first step on the ladder to
future F1 success.
Even more exciting for the army of
Lotus Racing fans was the news that for
2011 and beyond Lotus Racing officially
changed its name to Team Lotus. Having
successfully concluded the purchase of
the full rights of the Team Lotus brand
from David Hunt, the 2011 grid sees
the return of Team Lotus, one of the
most famous names in motor racinghistory. Fans around the world have been
following the development of the Norfolk
based squad since that momentous day
in September 2009 when there were just
four people in the factory in Hingham, and
with the return of Team Lotus in 2011
they will be glued to the next exciting
chapter of this incredible story.

HEIKKI KOVALAINEN
Heikki started his motor racing career
karting in the early 1990's. His first
recognition came with second place in
the Finnish Formula A Championship
in 1999 and 2000. That year also
saw Heikki add the Scandinavian
Championship and the Elf Masters, held
at Paris Bercy, to his achievements,
earning him the title of Karting Driver of
the Year in his native Finland.
Heikkis success saw him move up to the
British Formula Renault Championship in
2001, bringing two wins, two poles and
three fastest laps, enough to give him
fourth place in the Championship, plus
the 2001 Finnish Automobile Sports
Federation "Rookie of the Year" award.
That same year, Heikki made his F3
debut at the world renowned Macau
Grand Prix, finishing 8th.
In 2002 Heikki moved on to compete
in the British F3 Championship, scoring
an impressive five wins, three poles and
three fastest laps, securing his third
position in drivers' standings. He was
once again given the "Rookie of the
Year" award, and won the prestigiousF3 support race at the British Grand
Prix. He capped an impressive year by
finishing second in Macau and fourth at
the Marlboro Masters at Zandvoort.
In 2003 Heikki moved to Japan to
compete in the World Series by Nissan:
a win and two poles were enough to
earn third place in the Championship.
That same year he also made his F1
test debut, driving the Renault R23 at
Barcelona and the Minardi Cosworth at
Vallelunga two weeks later.
2004 brought more success for Heikki,
securing the World Series by Nissan
Championship. Driving for the Pons
Team he crushed the opposition, with
six wins, nine poles and ten fastestlaps to his name, competing alongside
Tiago Monteiro, Enrique Bernoldi and
Narain Karthikeyan. As a member of the
Renault Driver Development Programme
Heikki assisted with the development
of Renault's Championship winning R24,
adding to his growing F1 experience.

Stade de France, Paris, was the
venue for the season ending Race of
Champions in 2004. Alongside Marcus
Gronholm, Heikki represented Finland
in the Nations Cup , where he and his
team mate took the runner-up spot.
However, the top step of the podium did
not elude him long, with Heikki winning
the coveted Champion of Championstitle by beating 2004 World Rally
Champion Sebastian Loeb and seven
times Formula 1 World Champion
Michael Schumacher in front of a
packed stadium.
In 2005 Heikki moved up to GP2, taking
part in the inaugural series with Arden
Motorsport. His impressive development
continued, finishing second overall in the
series, securing five wins and two poles
along the way.
2006 saw Heikki make the step up to
the very pinnacle of world motorsport,
replacing Frank Montagny as the
Renault F1 Teams third driver. A series
of impressive displays in testing saw him
achieve his primary Formula 1 goal, with the announcement he had been
promoted by the Renault F1 Team to a
full-time race seat for the 2007 season.
Pitted against the vastly experienced
Giancarlo Fisichella, Heikki enjoyed an
excellent debut season in 2007, out-
performing and out-scoring his team-
mate, becoming second best rookie of
the season after Lewis Hamilton and
taking a very credible seventh place in
the final Championship standings.
These achievements did not go
unnoticed, and in December 2007
Team Vodafone McLaren Mercedes
announced Heikki as team-mate to
Lewis Hamilton, a position he held for
the 2008 and 2009 seasons, until the
announcement of his appointment to
Lotus Racing in 2009. 2008 saw Heikki
claim both his first pole position, at the
British Grand Prix at Silverstone, and his
first race win, at the Hungarian Grand
Prix, where he became the 100th driver
to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix.
Having joined the new Lotus Racing
team in 2009, Heikki finished 20th in
the 2010 season and his heroic fire-
fighting skills at the Singapore Grand
Prix earned him the coveted title LGMoment of the Year.

JARNO TRULLI
Jarno made a fighting start to his
Formula One career when he joined
the Minardi team in 1997, but after just
seven races he was asked to replace the
injured Olivier Panis at Prost where he
made an immediate impact. He finished
fourth in the German GP and led the
Austrian GP until he was cruelly denied
a sensational podium finish with an
engine failure. Nonetheless, Jarno had
made his mark and stayed at the Prost
team for a further two seasons. Results
were not forthcoming but he claimedhis first career podium with a fine drive
to second place in the wet European GP
in 1999. The result was something of
a fitting farewell to his time at Prost as
Jarno joined the Jordan Grand Prix squad
for the new Millennium.
It was another barren period for
Jarno in terms of podium results but
a handful of fourth places and some
sublime qualifying performances
attracted the attentions of the Renault
team for 2002. His first year at the
French manufacturer alongside Jenson
Button did little to improve upon his
previous results but in 2003, with the
teams technical department led by
Mike Gascoyne, he was given a more
competitive car with which to show his
full potential. Racing alongside Fernando
Alonso, Jarno returned to the podiumfor the first time since his Prost days
with third place in the German GP at
Hockenheim. The result gave Jarno
renewed confidence and paved the
way for Jarnos breakthrough season
in 2004.
Once again partnering Alonso, Jarno
attained regular points and podium
challenges before taking a breathtaking
victory around the streets of Monte
Carlo. Jarno had established himself
as one of the men to beat but midway
through the year relations with his team
had started to deteriorate and towards
the end of the year he opted for a
surprise switch to Toyota with whom he
would stay until 2009.
In his five-and-a-bit seasons with
Toyota Jarno put in some incredible
performances both in qualifying and in
races. In his first full season with the
team in 2005, with Mike Gascoyne
at the technical helm, he was one of
the Championship leaders in the early
races taking Toyotas first ever podium
results in Malaysia and Bahrain. Toyotas
competitiveness dropped off after
Gascoynes departure from the team in
2006 and Jarno was only able to fight

for occasional points finishes until a

position in Bahrain but a miscalculated
race strategy prevented him from
converting it into the teams maidenvictory. Nevertheless, with two podiums
from the first four races and a highly
competitive second place in the teams
home race in Japan, Jarno ended
the season what would be Toyotas
final in Formula 1 with some
career-high performances.
Jarno had a tough 2010 season with
Lotus Racing, with reliability issues
repeatedly bringing his races to an early
end. The switch to Red Bull Technology
gearbox and hydraulic systems will go a
long way to eradicating those issues and
will give Jarno another chance to show
the world exactly why he is regarded
as being one of the sports quickestever one lap specialists, and a race
winning driver.

DATO SRI TONY FERNANDES
TEAM PRINCIPAL
Educated at The London School
of Economics, Tony Fernandes has
established himself as one of the
worlds most successful entrepreneurs. His illustrious career started in
1987 when he assumed the role of
Financial Controller for Warner Music
International London before moving to
Virgin Communications at the end of
the 1980s as Senior Financial Analyst. In
1992, he returned to his native Malaysia
as Managing Director of Warner Music
Malaysia. At the end of the Millennium,
Tony became Vice President ASEAN of
the company, but it was in 2001 that
Tonys vision took him and his associates
to new heights.
Together with partners Dato Pahamin
Rejab (former chairman of AirAsia), Dato
Kamarudin Meranun (now Deputy Group
CEO, AirAsia), and Dato Aziz Bakar (now
Chairman of AirAsia), Tony founded TuneAir Sdn Bhd in 2001, with a vision to
democratise air travel and free it from
the clutches of the elite by offering
low fares and high quality, under the
banner Now Everyone Can Fly. They
bought the then loss making AirAsia
from its Malaysian owner DRB-Hicom,
for a token RM1 (USD 0.25 cents), and
agreed to take on the airlines RM40
million debt.
They started with two planes, one
destination (Pulau Langkawi) and a
staff of 250. The airline, together with
Indonesian and Thai affiliates, now
operates 82 new Airbus A320s and flies
to more than 65 destinations in Asia
from hubs in Malaysia, Thailand andIndonesia. The company employs almost
7,000 staff and has carried more than
75 million guests in its short history.
A similar opportunity arose with Lotus
Racing, with Tony first approached
about a sponsorship opportunity with
a new team (having already brought
AirAsia into F1 with AT&T Williams as
a team partner). Having been an avid
motorsport fan since childhood, he saw
the opportunity to bring the much-
loved Lotus name back to F1 and, with
a consortium of Malaysian business
interests, successfully led the creation
and launch of the team in 2009, with
the key milestone being September
12ths confirmation of the teams
entry into the 2010 FIA Formula 1World Championship.
Having led Lotus Racing to its first
season objective of tenth place, Tony
and his fellow shareholders oversaw the
transition to Team Lotus for 2011 and
he and the whole team is now aiming to
move up the grid and fight for points in
their second season.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Riad Asmats career has been driven by
a passion for motorsports. Soon after
graduating from Western Michigan
University, Riad joined the worldspremier sportswear company, Nike.
Based in Malaysia, he joined the public
relations division. It was at Nike where
he cultivated his deep passion and love
for sports.
As part of his role with Nike, he had
to work closely with the various
government agencies, sports
associations and sports officials. While
his personal interest was sports, he
was equally committed to achieving
the objectives of his company and
enhancing Nikes image and position in
the Malaysian sports market.
His obsession for sports has been a
major factor throughout his career.
While he enjoyed sports, from footballand karting to golf, his keen interest in

joined the Sepang International Circuit.
This became evident when he was with
the courier company UPS where Riad
developed a sponsorship programme for
several race car drivers.
His interest in motorsports reached
its pinnacle when he joined Proton in
2006. At Proton, Riad with his vast

MIKE GASCOYNE
CHIEF TECHNICAL OFFICER
Mike Gascoyne is one of the most renowned
technicians in Formula 1 and has carved
out an illustrious career at the pinnacle
of international motorsport over the last
two decades. Having studied for a Ph.D.
in fluid dynamics at Cambridge Universitythroughout the 1980s, Mikes passion for
motorsport took him into the world of
Formula 1 for the first time in 1989
when he joined the McLaren team as
an aerodynamicist.
At the turn of the 1990s, Mike took up a
brief sojourn as Chassis Dynamicist at Tyrrell
working under famed designer Harvey
Postlethwaite, which led to a three-year post
as Head of Aerodynamics at Sauber, where
he stayed until 1993.
The following season saw Mike return to
the Tyrrell team in the more senior role of
Deputy Technical Director, a position he held
until the teams demise in 1998.
That year, Mike joined the Jordan Grand Prixteam as Technical Director and led the team
to its most successful season ever in 1999
with two race victories, six podiums and third
place in the Constructors Championship.
During the 2000 season Mike was
approached to join the Benetton team,
which was to become Renault in 2002.
In his Technical Director capacity, Mike
transformed the team into a winning
operation, taking Renault to its debut victory
in the 2003 Hungarian Grand Prix.
Having established himself as a man capable
of turning around team fortunes, Mike was
snapped up by the relatively new Toyota
team at the end of 2003. Although unable
to have much impact on its 2004 challenger,
Mike set about developing the teams 2005
race car. The Cologne-based squad enjoyed
its most competitive year in Formula 1
that season with five trips to the podium andan overall fourth place in the Constructors
Championship.
2006 saw Mike move back to the UK
to become Chief Technology Officer
for the Spyker F1 team in time for the
2007 season in which the team was to
sensationally lead a rain-hit European Grand
Prix. In 2008, Spyker was taken over and
renamed Force India with Mike retaining
his role. The highlight of that year was
seeing team driver Adrian Sutil running in a
competitive fourth place in the Monaco GP
before after another driver crashed into him
just seven laps from the end of the race.
After leaving Force India before the 2009
season, Mike made his Formula 1 return
with Lotus Racing as Chief Technical Officer, confounding all expectations by designing,
building and racing a modern F1 car in just
six months. The successful conclusion of the
2010 season was another first for Mike,
helping lead the team from literally four
people in September 2009 to over 220 in
January 2011 when it fired up its new car in
the Team Lotus colours for the first time on
January 26th.
