Kalinda Primary School’s Vision Statement A learning community with shared values, fostering a life-long love

of learning through meaningful experiences, to embrace a constantly changing society.

CURRICULUM DAY Each year schools are allocated four pupil-free days. We are mandated to take the first day of the year as one, however, the others can be distributed throughout the year. We will be taking our last curriculum day for the year on Monday, 3

rd December. On this day our whole staff will be at school

participating in future planning for next year and beyond. We also will be taking two days at the beginning of the year, instead of the mandatory one. Many schools are following this arrangement.

This means that school for Kalinda children will begin on Thursday, 31

st January.

On this day school will begin at 9.00am for all children except Preps, who will begin at 9.30am just for this day.

FETE Another congratulations to our wonderful Fete Committee and community, as just over $23,000 was raised from our Fete. This money was allocated as part of our school budget for 2012 and is providing equipment and resources for our students to use.

CAR PARK It is of increasing concern that many parents/guardians are entering the Staff Car Park to drop off and pick up children. Unless permission has been granted from our office because of a disability, or if children have become sick during the day, no-one is permitted to enter the car park between 8.15am and 4.15pm. We have made this rule for the safety of every child in this school. Our school needs to be a safe place for children and if they are arriving by themselves sometimes they walk through the car park. Environmental Science How far has the food on your dinner table travelled? Can you reduce your environmental footprint? We invite the Kalinda Community to visit our front foyer and discover some amazing facts about the foodstuffs found in many of our pantries. Please take the challenge and calculate how far your dinner has travelled. We would be delighted to hear your results. DEB FRENCH & GRADE 3/4B

Term 4 is a Sunsmart Term

Have you got your hat? All students must be wearing a hat when outdoors before and after school, at recess, lunchtimes and during sports classes. If they are not wearing a school-approved Sunsmart hat students will not be able to participate in outdoor activities and will be asked to sit in the shade under a designated area.

WHERE: Croydon Little Athletics Track WHEN: 3.30pm Saturday 17th November until 10am Sunday 18th November (stay for 30 minutes or the whole 18 hours) WHY: To fundraise and support the Cancer Council in providing research grants for

cancer research, support families going through cancer and in educating people to prevent cancer

Relay For Life is an event that runs overnight (but you can stay for 30 minutes or the whole 18 hours) where teams walk around the track, join in activities and be entertained. Team Kalinda is made up of families, parents, students and teachers who want to support the fight against cancer. Junior School Council representatives will be selling candle bags for $2 to support our fundraising efforts. These bags are put around the track at dusk to remember those we have lost to cancer, and to support those fighting cancer. The funds raised will go towards Team Kalinda’s total. Check out these links and, if you can, join us as a Team Kalinda member, or make a donation to Team Kalinda on-line, or just come down to the track anytime and join us for a lap or two. What is Relay for life? :- http://bit.ly/VFuo2r Join Team Kalinda:- http://www.relayforlife.org.au/GetInvolved/JoinARelayTeam.aspx Hope to see you there. RECIPE OF THE WEEK!

To have any sort of success with Beef Ribs, you do need to simmer them before

marinating and putting on the BBQ. If not, you will end up with tough meat and having wasted your money!

Serves: 4-6 people

Preparation: The day before!!

Sticky Beef Ribs

What you need: 10-12 beef short ribs

3 garlic cloves, crushed

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon English mustard

2 tablespoons soft brown sugar

2 tablespoons tomato sauce

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1. Put the beef ribs in a large saucepan. Cover ribs with water and bring slowly to simmering point over a low heat.

Gently simmer, partially covered for 1 hour.

2. Remove ribs from water and drain on paper towel. Combine the other ingredients in a bowl and stir to combine.

Brush marinade over the ribs, cover and refrigerate overnight.

3. BBQ the ribs over a moderate heat for 10-12 minutes, turning often and basting with the marinade until ribs are

golden brown. Garnish with baby coriander leaves (optional). Serve with salads!
