1 Newsletter No. 26 - Term 3Week 7 Thursday 25 August 2016 From the Principal………….. Another Accolade for Kalinda The Department of Education sent a film crew to Kalinda this week to create a video about our school -wide use of targeted digital resources for teaching Maths. The video and accompanying web page will be a part of the Department of Education's ' What's working in Victorian Schools Case Study’ series, designed to feature best practice examples in Victorian Schools. Kalinda is one of just 12 schools from across the State that were identified to be featured in this series. As part of the filming, some of our classrooms and students were filmed at work. If your child was in one of these rooms, a permission form will be coming home tomorrow to ensure you are happy for them to appear in the video, which will only be visible to staff at other government schools. We look forward to seeing the finished product! What a great recognition for the fantastic work our teachers do. On the move again…. You may notice some tree and seat removal happening at the front of the school. This is to make way for more ground works during the holidays. We have quite a grand plan for the front of the school, part of which is a front entrance adjoining a new play area. This year we will be constructing a new entrance and the sport play area will follow next year. This is all very exciting as the front of the school has not really been revamped for many years. If you are near the school during the holidays please be aware that children must be supervised because there will be some large earthworks going on. New Portables For those of you who have children in the 1/2 area, the new portables are now inhabited. Mrs Davies and Ms Salmon’s grades have moved out to the new portables and they report they are very, very happy with them. The view from those portables is quite lovely and it is a very appealing atmosphere for the children to work in. Please pop in if you would like a look. Student teachers Kalinda Primary School is part of the Deakin Alliance group. This means that we are working very closely with Deakin University to support learning, particularly in Mathematics and Literacy. Yesterday we had 40 student teachers come and work in the school for the morning and many of these students will volunteer at the school in the coming weeks. This is a great way to support our students’ learning and to train the student teachers on site. These student teachers are 4 th years and they will be ready to venture into the teaching professional workforce next year, so this is a terrific opportunity for them to be skilled before they start working in schools. Trivia Night Don’t forget tomorrow is Trivia Night. The Fundraising Committee has worked really hard to make this a fun night and to raise funds for the school. There are over $3,000 work of prizes up for grabs. There is still time to book a table, or just come along and find some new friends.

Book Week 2016 Can you imagine swimming next to a real turtle and then having a real conversation with one? Such was the bold beginning to visiting Melbourne author Lauren Hastie’s children’s novel Oliver and Amelia: New Adventures of Urchin Grove. All of our Grade 1/2 students were treated to a fabulous visit from Lauren on Thursday. Lauren has just published her first children’s novel. Lauren read from the exciting book to the children.

Following the reading Lauren shared her writing process and discussed how she uses her own writer’s notebook to collect ideas and develop her characters, plot and setting. We were so impressed by the questions our children asked and their genuine interest in understanding Lauren’s writing process.

The Challenge will remain open until 9 September 2016. To complete the Challenge all books read must be entered online using the student login and password given to your child earlier in the year. Dear Parent/Guardian, Kalinda Primary School has been, and remains, a participant in the Healthy Together Children’s Evaluation. In 2016, all Grade 4 and Grade 6 students have been invited to participate. This study will examine influences on healthy weight and related behaviours (physical activity, sedentary behaviour, diet quality, sleep and quality of life) among children and adolescents across Victoria. Please read the information provided to your child/ren by evaluation staff back on Friday July 29, so that you can make an informed decision about your child/ren’s participation. Please only return the OPT-OUT consent form should you and/or your child/ren decide NOT TO participate. Please return that form to your child’s teacher or to the front office as soon as possible. * Please note that your child/ren’s participation in this study is assumed unless you indicate via the return of the signed OPT-OUT consent form that you do not wish for your child/ren to participate. This year, your child/ren’s involvement in the evaluation will involve:

Completing a brief physical activity, sedentary behaviour, food intake, sleep behaviours and health and wellbeing questionnaire

Having their height, weight and waist circumference measured in a private and professional manner with trained researchers

These activities will be conducted on Friday, August 26 in accordance with a timetable organised by the school to minimise class disruption. All information obtained in connection with this research that can identify your child will remain confidential. Your child’s data will be made anonymous during analyses, therefore, you child will not be identified in any report, publication or presentation. Results of this study will provide information about effectiveness of current efforts to improve the health of Victorian children and adolescents. This information will be used by educators, policy makers and researchers in future efforts to improve the health of Victorian children and adolescents. If you require further information or have any problems or concerns regarding this research, you can contact: Dr. Claudia Strugnell Research Fellow, World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention, Deakin Population Strategic Research Centre Geelong Waterfront Campus, Deakin University Locked Bag 20000, Geelong Vic, 3220 PH: (03) 5227 8483

JAPANESE CORNER

I stayed with the Hamilton Family for 3 weeks from Aug 1st to August 21st. While I was with them we went to beach , markets , parties, and many other places. They were always concerned about my welfare and told me I could relax on weekend if I wished. They were so kind and took me anywhere I wanted to go. It was like staying t my own home! They gave me lots of love and taught me how big love is. I will never forget my time with the Hamilton family and will have many beautiful memories of my time with them. My heart is full of gratitude.

One Day Scholastic Book Fair!

We are holding a One Day Scholastic Book Fair

in the Library on

Friday, 9th September There will also be a large selection of stationery available to purchase at the fair ranging from $1 to $5 an item. Reading is an important skill that needs to be developed in children. Not only is it necessary for survival in the world of schools and (later on) universities, but in adult life as well. The more children read, the better they become at reading. The more enjoyable the things they read are, the more they'll stick with them and develop the reading skills that they'll need for full access to information in their adult lives. Reading should be viewed as a pleasurable activity - as a source of entertaining tales and useful and interesting factual information. We invite you to visit our One Day Scholastic Book Fair and experience a celebration of reading. Our Scholastic Book Fair theme this year is Australia: Story Country. If you are able to volunteer some time to assist at the Book Fair, please contact Wendy Robertson on [email protected]. Book Fair Date: Friday 9th September, 2016 Shopping Hours: 8:00 – 9:30am 1:30-5:00pm WENDY ROBERTSON LIBRARIAN
