1 Newsletter No. 37 - Term 4Week 8 Thursday 26 November 2015 From the Principal……….. TWILIGHT MARKET What an incredible night last Friday was at our Twilight Market. Unfortunately the rain kept many people away, however, those who were brave enough to venture out had a great, but wet, time! I do thank all the families who came to help and enjoy the Twilight Market. I know the children all had a sensational time on the slippery slide and the other rides. I also wish to thank all the parents that came to watch their children in Highland Dancing and all the performances in the area in front of the Music room. The Kalinda Super Singers did a great job as did the Teacher Band and the individual performances. Thank you so much to Leesa Stewart and Tony Landi, and the team they gathered round them, to make the Twilight Market happen. Although takings were obviously down because of the rain, we will be using the frozen sausages and hamburgers for the Carols Night, so if you didn’t come to the Twilight Market you can enjoy the fabulous food at the Carols Night. CAROLS NIGHT Our Carols Night is on Wednesday 9 th December. The evening will begin with a BBQ at 5:30pm till 6:30pm and the Carols will begin at 7pm till 8pm. Please bring along a picnic and your singing voices to enjoy the carols with our children. A notice with full details will be coming home shortly. A reminder to parents, this is an alcohol-free event and children must be supervised by parents at all times. OXFAM CONCERT On Tuesday night this week many of our students performed at the OXFAM Concert at Box Hill Town Hall. Our Super Singers opened the show and gave a joyous performance in front of a packed audience. After seeing many acts from other schools our Highland Dancers gave a tremendous performance just before the last act of the night. So everyone went out feeling very buoyant indeed. Thank you so much to Lexi Maurus and Cheryl Henry-Wild for all their efforts in preparing the children for this lovely event. INDIAN ACTOR On Tuesday we had a visit from Arjun Raina. Below are some of the Foundation stories about the visit. A TASTE OF INDIA I saw a strange man from India. It was strange dancing. It was amazing. It was magnificent. I loved it. Student Leadership 2016 Last Friday saw the Grade 4s and 5s elect our Student Leadership Team for 2016. Whilst the successful candidates have been presented to the community at our weekly assembly, I thought it might be good to explain how the process is undertaken. Firstly, all Grade Fives are invited to express their interest in being a student leader. After that, they are given some guidelines on what they need to speak about when presenting to their peers. On Friday of last week, 19 boys and 18 girls chose to run for the positions. This, in itself, is fantastic to see so many students wanting to lead our school and take on that role of a more formal responsibility. As the students speak, those in the audience are encouraged to make notes about each candidate. Once the boys finished their speeches, it was time for the election. The Grade 5s learnt about the preferential voting system we use in Australia at our elections and this was the process we used for our Student Leadership Team. Voters were asked to order the candidates from 1 through to 19 (18 for the girls) in order of their preference. We used the voting booths that are used at Australian elections and they were secret votes. Once these were completed, all of the Grade 5/6 teachers collated them. First we tallied all of the first votes. Then the candidate who had the least number of votes was eliminated and their votes went to their second preference. Then we counted again, then the candidate with the least votes was eliminated and their votes redistributed. We needed to get to two clear winners. In the case of both the boys and girls, this took some time. We are very happy to announce that the Student Leadership Team for 2016 is:

Olivia, Charlotte, Ethan and Will. Over the next few weeks, they will be working with the current school leaders and learning how to perform their roles. Stuart Mclean Student Leadership Coordinator

REFLECTIONS ON OUR INDIAN CULTURAL INCURSION

By 12S Students On Tuesday 24th November the junior classes went into the school stadium to see the Kathakli dancer. He dressed up in a costume of a king to show great pride. He taught us how to make hand gestures to show 8 different emotions. The emotions we liked were laughter of a monkey, pride of an elephant and sadness of a fish. He then talked to us and answered some questions about his colourful costume and India. He had colorful make-up and wobbled his cheeks and made his hands dance.

SAKG THIS WEEK This week in the kitchen, we thoroughly enjoyed finely chopping freshly harvested lettuce from our garden, which we placed onto our nori with a variety in of toppings. Our toppings were chicken, tuna and avocado , carrot and lettuce. We very professionally rolled our sushi and cut each one into sixths. A group of us busily squeezed fresh lemons with which we made homemade lemonade. From our garden we also harvested sage and finely chopped it to be included in our home-made ice cream, made with cream and fresh strawberries. What a feast!

GRADE 3/4 MATHS As a conclusion to our Zone Maths fraction unit, our learning intention was to divide a slice of fairy bread into equal fractional parts of sixths or eighths. It was wonderful to see some children extend their understandings to twelfths and sixteenths.

FINAL WORKING BEE

Many thanks to the following families for their assistance during last weekend’s working bee: McCartney and Langridge, including their mini-helpers; Nathan & Jack and Matilda & Isla. Even though it was a small workforce, we managed to stay on top of a few ongoing projects as well as to complete a few stand-alone jobs. 'Boxes ticked' included:

soft-fall was re-spread to priority areas (in the Grade 2/3 playground), timber retaining structures in the Grade 2/3 playground were repaired, strengthened and consolidated, electrical work was also undertaken (owing to the attendance of a qualified electrician, so that included a

bit of stuff that, by definition, you may not ‘notice’), and hedges were trimmed back from footpaths.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to every family who participated at our working bees, as we simply could not keep our huge grounds looking as pleasant as they are without you. And, as always, we would also like to say a massive thank you to Ted Dugdale who - along with Steve Harvey - organise the jobs that need doing and (most importantly) make sure the BBQ is ready for hungry workers!

THERE ARE NO FURTHER WORKING BEES FOR 2015. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HAS ATTENDED A WORKING BEE THIS YEAR TO HELP MANAGE THE DAY-TO-DAY MAINTENANCE OF OUR BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS.

OSHClub News Before School / After School Care Program Term 4 – Week 6

This week we have had so much fun at OSHClub, exploring new equipment and supplies. This week we have been focussing on Christmas and Cooking with the children, we have made Macaroni and cheese (a suggested snack from Alex). We created Christmas Masks with paint, paper plates and glitter, and created a giant star for the OSHClub Head Office. Campbell and Emma asked the children for suggestions and began planning a Christmas breakup party for end of term. Some yummy snacks this week, veggies with Pita and dip, smoothies, pizzas, jaffles, macaroni and cheese and so much more! We even had delicious homemade milo icy poles too. Everyone has been enjoying getting outside in the sunshine, playing on the playground, games of cricket and soccer. Oshy and Sticky, our resident stick insects are growing very quickly and we are enjoying looking after them, collecting Gum leaves, spraying them and cleaning their enclosure as well as holding them and watching them move. This week one of them tried to escape but we found her and popped her back! Those tricky insects! On Wednesday we coloured in mandalas and made monsters from Milk cartons. A reminder that children MUST WEAR hats AND sunscreen whilst at our Before and After School Care service. We supply Coles’ branded 50+ protection sunscreen here at the service, however, if your child has specific sunscreen needs we encourage parents to either leave some with us at the program or ensure that children have some in their bags when they arrive. Children will strictly NOT be allowed to play outside if they do not have both hat and sunscreen. We appreciate your feedback for our program and our team. We are available during program hours on 0439 992 434; feel free to leave a voicemail message if we are unavailable. We are also contactable at [email protected]. Alternatively, you are always welcome to contact our Area Manager (Kathi Rowan) on 0432 212 817 or [email protected]. These can be anonymous We welcome everyone in OSHClub, and it would be awesome to see some new faces in our program, so come on in and see everything we have to offer!
