CANTEEN NEWS Please note the Berry Blast, Custard & Fruit and Jelly & fruit need to be pre-ordered on the morning of your child's lunch order, they will not be available for purchase at lunch time. As they are not a stable item to send in the lunch order baskets, they need to be collected on the 2nd bell at lunch time from the Canteen window. We are in need of helpers for the following dates. Please let me know if you can help us out. 1 Helper for 28th October 1 Helper for 5th &18th November 1 Helper for 25th November 2 Helpers for 27th November For a limited time, we have Frozen Jelly Cups available at lunchtime for $1.00. Just a reminder that there is a 2 Icy pole limit per student. We are asking if parents could please limit the amount of money your children are bringing to school for Canteen purchases to just a couple of dollars each and to put the money somewhere very safe in their bag so it won’t get lost. Some children have been known to hand over $5 and $10 notes and this is a bit too much for young children to be carrying to school. Your cooperation in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Songs for Tomorrow’s Mountain Kalinda String Group

On Sunday 11

th October, Kalinda String Group participated in an exciting performance called Songs for Tomorrow’s

Mountain. Held at Burrinja Cultural Centre in Upwey it brought together musicians, choirs, performers, schools, and the wider community from across the Hills region. In what was described as a melting pot of creative community ideas in response to dealing with themes of climate change and environment, Kalinda Strings took part in Earth-Beat, a beautiful 35 minute song cycle composed by Dindy Vaughan, alongside performers of all ages from Rosie Burns’ Ranges Young Strings, guitarist David Seedsman, percussionist Jordan Scotney, soprano Christina Keightley, The Mountain Singers, Cath Russell’s Sing Rattle and Groove and combined choirs from The Patch and Kallista Primary Schools. It sure was a spectacular afternoon, and I am thoroughly impressed with the dedication Kalinda Strings students had in preparing for this project, as well as the level of professionalism and wonderful playing they displayed on the day. Congratulations! Holly Caldwell (Kalinda Strings Conductor/Director)

(Thank you Yvette, for the photo!)

Here at Kalinda we are a SunSmart school, which means students are now required to wear a Kalinda-approved hat. These hats are wide brimmed with the Kalinda Logo and can be purchased at our Uniform Shop for $15.00. During Term 4 students will need to bring their hats to school and wear them at all times outside for sport, recess, lunchtimes and any other activities outside. If your child is not wearing their hat he/she will be asked to sit in the shade and may miss out on recess, lunchtimes, or any activities being held. Please read the SunSmart advice sheet below. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD BRINGS THEIR HAT TO SCHOOL EVERY DAY THIS TERM.

P & F Meeting

Our next P & F meeting will be held in the school stadium next

Monday 19th October straight after assembly.

The lovely Nicole will also open Kalinda Kafe, so come along, have a

cuppa and something to eat and catch up on the latest goss.

Everyone is welcome to attend!

We hope to see you there

WORKING BEE THANKS Many thanks to the following families for their assistance during last weekend’s working bee: Barker, Saundage, Steele, Guzman, Hunter and Hird, along with their mini-helpers: James, Charles, Will, Max, Grace, Josie, Harry, Thomas, Ben and Lachlan. On a ‘stunner’ of a Spring morning, we were able to:

Distribute a combined 15m3 of new soft-fall to the Foundation/1 and Grade 4/5/6 playgrounds.

Respread existing soft-fall to priority areas (in the 1/2/3 playground) as well as to

Distribute 1m3 of new washed sand into each long-jump/sand pit.

* Please be advised that we are aware of the existing maintenance requirements of some pieces of our playground equipment. Repairs of such equipment is, in some instances, a specialised trade requiring specialised equipment and parts, and unfortunately there have been hold-ups (beyond our control) with our repair company. We are expecting repairs (along with a full, scheduled ‘performance and safety’ audit) to be completed within the next week or so.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to every family who participates at our working bees, as we simply could not keep our huge grounds looking as pleasant as they are without you. And, as always, we would also like to say a massive thank you to Ted (and Nathan) Dugdale who - along with Steve Harvey - organise the jobs that need doing and (most importantly) make sure the BBQ is ready for hungry workers!

If you are new to the school or have not yet filled out the working bee slip to indicate your date of preference, please do so through the office. Many hands make light work and it’s always a great opportunity to meet other parents and for your children to get together.

THE NEXT WORKING BEE IS ON SATURDAY NOVEMBER 21 from 10:00am - 12:00noon. See you there!

OSHClub News Before School / After School Care Program 15th October – Term 4 – Week 2

Hello Everyone! Another reminder that children MUST WEAR hats AND sunscreen whilst at our Before and After School Care service. We supply Coles’ branded 50+ protection sunscreen here at the service, however, if your child has specific sunscreen needs we encourage parents to either leave some with us at the program or ensure that children have some in their bags when they arrive. Children will strictly NOT be allowed to play outside if they do not have both hat and sunscreen. In other news, we have just placed an order for new art and craft materials to be delivered in the next few weeks. We are very excited! Included in this order is a truck load of Christmas craft for us all to get stuck into throughout the rest of the year. YAY! Over the past week we have had children creating their own Pokémon, using play dough to create a Masterchef game, playing sports such as cricket, soccer, tennis, badminton, AFL, and NFL. Other children have been involved in playground activities, skipping, drawing, painting, board games, card games, reading, homework, and Lego activities. We hope that the foundation children had an excellent excursion to the zoo yesterday. All of the OSHClub educators love the zoo and so we strongly look forward to hearing all about it! We look forward to seeing everyone over the rest of the term! Kind Regards, Kalli Boag, Michelle Dark, Samantha Lawrence, Wendy Reid and Tayla Alderson.

Join TEAM KALINDA and help fight cancer!

Maroondah Relay For Life 14th – 15th November 2015

Town Park (Little Aths Track) Norton Road, Croydon

Join Team Kalinda – follow the prompts http://www.relayforlife.org.au/participate/

then type in Team Kalinda in the search bar !

What is Relay For Life?

Relay For Life is a chance for communities to recognise and celebrate those who have overcome cancer or are undergoing treatment, as well as the people who care for them. Relay also provides an opportunity to celebrate the memory of loved ones lost to cancer.

It’s like a team walkathon where you can walk one lap or 100 laps – it’s all up to you. There are focussed ceremonies for carers and survivors at the commencement of the relay (3.45pm) a candlelight memorial service at dusk (approx 8.30 pm) and a closing ceremony next morning (approx. 9.30 am)

It isn’t a walkathon where you are sponsored per lap but rather it is the participant who asks for donations from family, friends or work colleagues. You can fundraise for yourself and add that to your personal total which goes onto Team Kalinda’s total money raised. Our goal this year is to raise $1000 or more.

You can sleep over in your tent on our school site or just come for an hour. There is pizza or spit roast to purchase for dinner, coffee all night, and a hot breakfast in the morning. Entertainment is on offer for most of the event – even through the night for those wishing to stay up. And of course those laps to walk – it isn’t a walkathon but people generally just want to walk.

Who can participate?

Everyone! There are no restrictions when it comes to Relay. You don’t have to be over 18 to get involved – anyone can do it! Children and adults have activities they can participate in all through the night as well as during the daylight hours.

How it works

Go to the website above, follow the prompts to Maroondah Relay and then join Team Kalinda!

Pay your registration fee of $20 (shirt included) then set yourself a fundraising target and you are ready to help fight cancer.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK!

Serves: 6

Prep Time: 10 minutes + chilling

Hedgehog Cream Pie

What you need:

1/3 cup Nutella 300 ml thickened cream 175 g pkt Coles Bakery Hedgehog Slice, coarsely chopped 160 g pkt Coles Bakery Make At Home Pastry Flan1 PAMPAS sweet flan case

Place the cream and Nutella in a medium bowl. Use an electric mixer to beat until soft peaks form. Gently fold in three-quarters of the hedgehog slice.

Spoon the Nutella mixture into the pastry shell. Place in the fridge for 1 hour to chill (see Tips). Sprinkle the remaining hedgehog slice over the top of the pie. Cut into slices to serve (see Tips).

TIPS: The pie filling isn’t meant to set completely, but chilling the pie will help firm it up slightly. To easily slice the pie, dip your knife in a glass of hot water and wipe it dry between slices.

Nutrition Tips - Skills for a lifetime

It’s really easy to say “My child’s weight is fine; they don’t have to think about what they eat.” As a parent do you have to think about what you eat? When did you learn how to do that? The things you are “teaching” your kids right now are the skills they take with them into adulthood. As a dietitian I see many people who are unhappy with their habits and want to change them- but it is hard to change a habit of a lifetime. My daughter was with friends the other day and they stopped to get doughnuts from a road side vendor. There were four of them in the car and they bought a dozen doughnuts and had three each. The mother commented “I don’t know anyone who would only buy four”, my daughter quietly said to herself, “My mum”- and she was right! This is not because I am a dietitian this is because of the lessons I was taught around food as a child. The skills I learnt as a child, “you can have one”, help me to maintain a healthy weight as an adult. The message here is that healthy eating is not about avoiding the sometimes foods but neither is it ‘have as much as you like because you don’t have a problem with weight.’

How do you recognise asthma?

People with asthma can have a range of symptoms:

o Breathlessness o Wheezing o Tight chest o Persistent cough o Symptoms often occur at night, early in the morning, or during/after activity.

A person’s asthma symptoms can vary over time – sometimes they will have no symptoms, especially when asthma is well controlled. See your doctor.
