GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THESSALONIKI

Thessaloniki, a lively modern c ity overlooking the Gulf of Thermaikos, is the capital of Macedonia and second largest c ity of Greecetoday. The White Tower (in Greek Lefkos Pyrgos), which dominates the seafront promenade and is one of the last remainders of the 15thcentury fortifications, has become Thessalonikis unofficial emblem.

In 1997 the c ity was the Cultural Capital of Europe. It was also an Olympic city during the 2004 Olympic games in Greece.

Thessaloniki was founded in 315 B.C. by Kassandros, king of Macedonia and former general of Alexander the Great. During the Byzantineera Thessaloniki was the second most significant city of the Byzantine Empire, after the capital Constantinople. The wealth of the 14th centuryByzantine churches testifies to the heights to which Christianity then attained in the c ity (St. Paul preached here and a lso addressed the(Thessalonians in his well known epistle).

Apart from the more recognized monuments of Thessaloniki (ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine etc.) the city also possesses a large display

of individual structures as well as entire housing blocks which belong to the modern period of Architecture (popular Architecture andNeoclassical structures). Those buildings not only reflect the spirit and mood of the period they were built in but through their techniqueillustrate the centuries old experience of the Greeks who built them.

Nowadays the visitor can enjoy all sorts of attractions such as music performances at the Orchestra Hall of the C ity, cultural events(theater, ballet, art exhibits, lectures etc .) and sample a variety of Greek tastes at numerous local restaurants and taverns. One can also visitthe many museums that cover a wide spec trum of anc ient and contemporary cultural facets.

Together with the panoramic tour of Thessaloniki that includes the Galerian complex- Rotonda triumphal

arch, via Egnatia with the medieval churches the holocaust monument and the port of Thessaloniki and the

symbol of the city the white tower, we will do 3 stopovers in the city walls and the trigonion tower with the

We will begin our tour from the white tower the symbol of Thessaloniki and we will visit the St. Sophia church

from the 8th century A.D. We will continue with a panoramic tour to the western part of the city where we will

visit the church of the 12 apostles from the 14th century A.D. The tour will continue to the Trigonion tower and

the panoramic view of Thessaloniki and we will visit the museum of Byzantine culture

The traditional village of Nymhaion has all the ecological aspects of view of a village that combines traditionalproducts, horse riding, history of the local tribes of the vlachs that lived there for centuries. Nievesta was the old
