    Getting around Thessaloniki:

    On foot:

You can cover most of the city on foot. All main attractions are in walking distances

    one from another.

    By bus:

Organization of Urban Transport of Thessaloniki is in charge of the inner city bus

transport. You can find more information about the available routes, timetables and

other additional information on their website. Another option is to ask on the

reception in your hotel or even someone in the street to tell you where to take the

Our recommendation is route 50 Cultural line, which will guide you to the most

    cultural attractions of the city.

    What to see in Thessaloniki?

    MonumentsRotonda

It was constructed by Gallerius as his

mausoleum. It is the oldest of Thessaloniki's

churches. Some Greek publications claim it

is the oldest Christian church in the world,

although there are other competitors for

that title. It is the most important surviving

example of a church from the early Christian

period of the Greek-speaking part of theRoman Empire.

    White Tower

White tower is the symbol and point of reference for the locals and the visitors of

Thessaloniki city. It stands next to the water front of the town reminding of the old

times. It used to be the tower that guarded the eastern end of the Thessalonikis

city walls during the 15th century and for the years later on was used as a prison.

In 1912 Thessaloniki was freed and the Tower was whitewashed as a symbol of

cleansing and freedom and gained its current White Tower name. Nowadays it's a

museum of art and history and one of the citys main attractions.

Palace of Galerius and Arch Of Galerius Kamara

The Palace is located in Navarinou Square and it was

built in 300 A. D in the heart of the Thessaloniki city.

Pieces of the palace are prominent around the center of

the city giving an ancient and historical feel to it. The

arch of Galerius, or commonly known as Kamara

(meaning arch), is about 1 minute walk north from the

palace and it is one of the most known meeting spot of

Thessaloniki citizens. It is a symbol of glory and has

been a focal spot of the city for a long time. Kamara

was built in 299 A.D. and was dedicated in 303 A. D. to

Galerius victory over the Persians in 208 A. D.

    Aristotelous square

The most impressive square in Thessaloniki. Buildings

with great architecture inspired by European and

colonial models, cafes, shops etc. A meeting place

during the day. The square where the big celebrations

take place, such as the coming of the New Year.Everyday a lot of people take their walk in Aristotelous

square, a lot of young ones skateboard around and

hang out. The square is full of trees and ends next to

the water front where you could drink your coffee, beer

or eat in some fancy restaurant.

    Roman Forum

The Roman Forum of Thessaloniki is the ancient Roman-era forum (or Agora),

discovered by archeological excavations, which took place in 1966. It is a large two-

terraced forum, which also features two Roman baths (one of them is buried

underneath the city) and a small theater, used for Gladiatorial games. In mid-2nd

century A.D., it was the cultural and economic center of Thessaloniki, and its

believed that it was used until 6th century. It is located north of the Aristotelous

square, between Filippou and Olympou streets, in Thessalonikis city center. In

summer, Pic Nic Urban Festival, which features free food and live music, is hosted

    at the Forum.

The Church Of Saint Demetrius - Agios Dimitrios

The church of the patron saint of the town is amust see in Thessaloniki. The first church of

Saint Dimitrios, a Christian martyr, was built in

413 A.D. The location of the church is the place

where gladiator fights used to be performed in

the city. The ancient bath area, in which Saint

Dimitrios had been prisoned, has been retained

as a crypt inside the church. It was completely

rebuilt in 1948 according the original plans

since it has been destroyed twice before by

fire. It stands as one of the most important

    byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki.

    Osios David The Latomou monastery

This humble church with a commanding view of the city was supposedly built about

500 in honor of Galerius's daughter, who was secretly baptized while her father was

away fighting. It was later converted into a mosque, and at some time its west

wallthe traditional place of entrance (in order to look east when facing the altar)

was bricked up, so you enter Osios David from the south. No matter; this entirely

suits the church's rather battered magic. You can still see the radiantly beautiful

mosaic in the dome of the apse, which shows a rare beardless Jesus, as he seems

to have been described in the vision of Ezekiel.

Nightlife Thessaloniki comes alive at night!

Thessaloniki is famous for its outgoing people, the always relaxed attitude that you

feel "in the air" of the city, delicious tastes and mixture of local cuisines and last but

not least, everyone talks about the city's nightlife.

The city offers you countless options that can satisfy every style of nightlife you

prefer. It has a plethora of bars close to the water front with different musical

    styles, designs and decoration.

In Ladadika and in the Valoritou and Syggrou Streets you will find rock and

alternative bars that are always full of people having fun time and drinking a beer.

Ladadika is the area from Koudouriotou to Diamanti

streets and from Hiou to Lemnou streets, and it is what

remains of the Jewish part of the city. It is characterized

by its beautiful surroundings that help you get a feel of

Thessaloniki before the great fire of 1917. Currently you

can find many nice bars and restaurants there and you

can certainly feel why it has become one of the citysfocal points in the nightlife of Thessaloniki. Nevertheless,

it is always a great area for eating traditional Greek foods

specially cooked with the influence of the immigrant

element that used to exist. There are a lot of nice restaurants in this area that went

from having a bad reputation to being one of the nicest places in the city.

In case you want to experience more elegant and stylish restaurants you could go

to the area of Krini, which is on the east coast of the city by the seaside.

shop, and is appropriate for all ages.

    Where to go near Thessaloniki?

    Meteora

Meteora is one of the largest and significant complexes of Christian Orthodox

    Monasteries in Greece. Meteora means

suspended in the air or in the heavens

above and it is comprised of 6 monasteries

built on natural sandstone rock pillars. It

used to have 30 active monasteries and it

has been included on the UNESCO World

Vergina - City of Philip II and center of Greek Macedonia

Vergina is a village located in Central Macedonia, Greece, around 80 kilometers

away from Thessaloniki. It is famous because of the archaeological finds, including

tombs of Macedonian Kings, discovered by Professor Manolis

Andronikos. According to the claims of Andronikos and most

archeologists, the tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the

Great, and the tomb of Alexander IV, who is the son of

Alexander the Great and Roxana, were found.

Vergina is the modern name of Aigai that was the capital of

the Kingdom of Macedonia. The tombs are protected by a set

of underground enclosures build in 1993 and a museum has

been constructed in order to display all the findings. On the

lid of the golden larnax (small closed coffin) of Philip II there

is the classic Greek Macedonian symbol of sun. Since 1996,

UNESCO has inducted the Archeological Site of Aigai in

    the World Heritage List.

    Mount Athos Agion Oros

Mount Athos in Greece or "Agion Oros" (Holy Mountain) is the centre of Eastern

Christian Orthodox Monasticism, dedicated to prayer and worship. It is located in

the third, eastern peninsula of Chalkidiki or

    Halkidiki.

Agion Oros forms a self-governed part of the

Greek state. It is subject to the Ministry of

Foreign Affairs in its political aspect,

spiritually and about the religious issues to

    the Ecumenical Patriarchate of

    Constantinopole.

Agion Oros is divided into twenty self-

    governed territories. Each territory consists

of a cardinal monastery and other monastic

    establishments that surround it.

Though land-linked, Mount Athos is accessible by ferry boat either from the port of

Ouranoupoli, for those heading to west coast monasteries or from Ierrisos for the

    east coast ones.

The daily number of visitors entering Mount Athos is restricted and all are required

to obtain a special entrance permit valid for a limited period. The permit is called

adiamontrion, a form of Byzantine visa that is written in Greek, dated using the

Julian calendar, and signed by four of the secretaries of leading monasteries.

There are generally two kinds of diamontria: the general diamontrion thatenables the visitor to stay overnight at any one of the monasteries but only to stay

in the mountain for three days, and the special diamontrion which allows a visitor

to visit only one monastery or skete but to stay as many days as he has agreed

with the monks. The general diamontrion is available upon application to the

Pilgrims' Bureau in Thessaloniki. Once this has been granted it will be issued at the

port of departure, on the day of departure.

Once granted, the pilgrim can contact the monastery where he would like to stay in

order to reserve a bed (one night only per monastery). The ferries require

    reservations, both ways.

The duration of the general visa can be extended by several days by personally

applying at the main office in Karyes.

Ask for more details about any of the aforementioned trips at our hotels reception.

    Other places worth mentioning are:

    Chalkidiki (Halkidiki)

What to do if you lose your documents?

Its always stressful to lose your passport, ID, money or other documents whileyoure on vacation. To ensure that you have the least amount of trouble when that

happens, be sure to do the following:

Make copies of your documents and bring them with you on your trip. You

can carry it anywhere with you, or leave it in the hotel room. Also, leave a

copy to your friend or a family member at home, so they can send it to you,

if necessary, via e-mail or fax.

Dont carry all of your money in the same place. Place it in different bags and

    pockets.

Have an address and a telephone number of your countrys embassy orconsulate in the country youre staying at. To help you with that, hotel El

Greco has carefully created a list of consulates in Thessaloniki, which you can

    find on the next page.
