Greetings From Your Chapter Directors

GWRRA NC-A “Piedmont Goldwings”

Happy 4th of July Everyone, It is hard to believe 2017 is half gone. We hope everyone is enjoying the nice riding weather. It can not last long since July is here, so be safe in your travels.

Just think - we have July 4th celebration, Chapter picnic in August, Labor Day celebration, Wings over the Smokies, Halloween, Beach trip, Thanksgiving, Gifts on Cycles, and then Christmas. We know each and every one of you have many activities in between all of this. HOW TIME FLYS! We hope you plan on enjoying these activities and special days.

We will do CAN GOODS for the month of July. Thanks for all the can goods, dry goods, etc. that you brought in June. We delivered this to the Servants Center in Glenwood.

Our Annual Picnic….Saturday, August 5th at Hagan Stone Park, Area “C” (where we were last year). Lunch time will be at Noon. Come any-time. Be sure to bring your CHAIRS. Ladies, how about desserts? If you plan on camping, get in touch with Hagan Stone Park.

Wings over the Smokies will be here before we know it. We hope you have sent in your registration and made your motel reservations. Please

let us know if you plan on working. A schedule will be sent to everyone. Tickets, tickets, sell these tickets! Please turn in your stubs and money in July. The sooner we can get this turned in the easier it will make Bev Chapman’s job.

Be Safe in your travels. We Care, Alice & Ron Myers Chapter Directors NC-A

Hope you were able to ride your bike on Ride to Work Day, June 19th, as well as getting in a lot of riding in June. If you like warm weather with afternoon pop-up storms, you’re happy now! But this weather brings up some issues for motorcyclists, which we need to be aware of, and know how to han-dle.

Warm (more like hot) weather can present problems. We all know we must stay hydrated and replenish our electro-lytes to help us stay alert and aware when we’re riding and active in the heat. Drink water or liquids containing electro-lytes, available at most gas station/convenience stores – gas up and drink lots! Avoid caffeinated drinks (coffee, tea, ener-gy drinks) and, of course, alcoholic beverages as doctors recommend against them for hydration, and we all know better than to ride or drive after drinking alcohol. I’ve already had one episode of heat exhaustion (hyperthermia), which can be very dangerous. Ideally, we should avoid being out and active in the hottest part of the day, but that’s not always possi-ble. Dressing for the heat means changing our gear – light colored ventilated armored riding jackets, riding pants, ventilat-ed boots designed for hot weather, ventilated gloves, and helmets with good ventilation all help to mitigate the heat and keep us a bit more comfortable. Many of us find that wearing shirts and pants whose material is specifically designed to be cooler in hot weather also helps tremendously. There are also scarves and vests that can be soaked in water and worn to help cool us down, but these work better in lower humidity. If the day is hot and steamy, these wet or moist items will not be as helpful. Another issue for us is protecting ourselves from sun damage to our skin and eyes. Wearing sunscreen (factor 15 and above), reapplied every two hours is recommended for all exposed skin – and remember, if you’re wearing a mesh jacket with a short-sleeved shirt under it, ditto mesh pants with shorts underneath, sunscreen on arms and legs as well. For your eyes, we always recommend safety glasses with UVA/UVB protection, and now doctors are recommending UVC protec-tion as well. In years to come, you’ll be so glad you took these steps to protect yourself. Rain presents some problems for riders, and we need to remind ourselves to be aware of these issues. When is the road the most slick in the rain? The road surface accumulates dirt, oil and other “goop” which can be very slick until the rain washes it off the road, usually the first 15 to 30 minutes. Solution: pull off for a rest stop. If you can’t pull off and wait a bit, use lower speed, caution, and careful observance of road surface conditions to keep yourself safer. Note: tar snakes (those cracks in the road that have been patched with black tar material) can be slick even when not wet), as can some road markings such as lane lines, stop lines, etc., so be aware and be careful. Keep your glasses, face shield and wind-shield clean – rain and road grime splashes can present serious visibility problems for you and cars – be aware. Of course, your rain suit should be standard equipment, carried with you daily, just as you carry your first aid kit, sunscreen, and money – all essential! What about hydroplaning? Can motorcycles hydroplane? Absolutely, just as cars and truck – slow down, avoid ponded water, try to ride on the drier part of your lane (tire tracks often are worn down and can pond water). DO NOT USE CRUISE CONTROL in the rain or slick conditions, on your motorcycle, in your car or truck! Tell your family, tell your friends – this is extremely dangerous. What about lightning? Can motorcyclists be struck by lightning? YES, it has happened many times. When you can hear thunder or see lightning flashes, seek shelter until the storm passes. Your chance of being struck by lightning is greater than your chance of winning the lottery. Anyone out in a thunderstorm is at greater risk – bikers, swimmers, golfers, ball players, etc. Oh, and by the way, I know at least one person who has been struck by lightning 3 times – must be his magnetic personality, or just bad luck or fail-ure to seek safe shelter. Lightning is not always fatal, obviously, but can cause serious and per-manent injuries and nerve damage. Morning rides, or a break in riding through the hottest part of the day, will make our summer riding more pleasant and enjoyable – just a suggestion – so how about a breakfast or brunch ride? And, you’ll notice, riding in the mountains is always about 10 degrees cooler. Just a thought – we’ll see a lot of our two-wheeled friends on bicycles now. Please extend them the same courtesy of the road we expect from other drivers. Pass safely, make them aware of our presence and intent (a short beep of the horn) and allow plenty of space, and watch for bikes approaching when you are making a left or right turn, just as you would watch for cars. We make safety a priority and truly we are friends for fun, safety and knowledge! Paula Hines, NC-A Chapter Educator

For the month of June, we continued to have fun attending Central Region Chapter Gatherings, as

well as attending the NC-O2 Hickory gathering with Henry. Bill and Henry continue each week attending Wednesday Breakfast/Rides with NC-W Eden Chapter members; David joined them this last week.

We, along with Henry, Ron and Alice were able to capture the Central Travelers Plaque at the NC-M Salisbury gathering this month.

We have continued to chase the Central Couples Plaque frequently, capturing 4 out of 7 times for June, for total of 16 times for the year.

Be safe in your travels and as always, hope we can see you at some of the other NC Chapter Gatherings, as well as our monthly Gather-ing on July 13th.
