Greetings From Your Chapter Directors

Alice & Ron Myers

GWRRA NC-A “Piedmont Goldwings”

Hello Members,

August is almost over, where has it gone? We hope everyone has enjoyed their summer and vacation time.

Did you enjoy the solar eclipse? For those that went to Columbia, we understand you had a great viewing. For us we had cloudy weather and rain on the other side of town. Oh well, we hope we are around for the next partial – 06-10-2021.

We delivered the school supplies that were collected at our last gathering to the Guilford Teach-ers Supply Warehouse. They collect supplies all year along. We received a nice thank you card from them. Come September 1st, there are only 27 days left before Wings Over The Smokies. Have you registered and booked your

reservations? We are looking forward to see-ing everyone and having a great time at Wings. Our Friday Night Dinner was to Ginza Japa-nese Steakhouse. We had a good crowd – 12 friends – Alex & Sandy, Carl & Nan-cy, Dave & Helen, Cheryl (JR was in Charlotte traffic so he had a take home), Pat & Melissa and our friend and past member Walter King, Ron & me. Our chapter attended T-2’s (Albemarle) School Tools Event. Those that attended were Janice & Bill, Henry, Helen & Dave, Ron & me. T-2 had a planned ride which everyone enjoyed, ending at the church. Everyone enjoyed themselves. It

rained while we were eating but cleared up by the time we were ready to leave. We almost made it home before it rained again. Dave & Helen were lucky, no rain. Gary Harris, Jerry & Dale Hyde and us did get rained on but by the time we were home, we were dry. Sun and hot temperature will do it every time. We have some members on long distance trips. We know they are having a great time and seeing lots of interesting things. You guys PLEASE BE SAFE! Once again, Wings will be here before we know it. We look forward to seeing everyone. Ride Safe. We Care, Alice & Ron Myers Chapter Directors, NC-A (Greensboro)

Good news – we’re getting closer to Wings Over the Smokies (WOS), closer to cooler weather and more comfortable riding temperatures. It has been so very hot and humid this summer, presenting very real risks of heat exhaustion for any outdoor activities. We’d like to think we get some air flow cooling when riding our motorcycles, but hot air is hot and with high humidity, doesn’t provide much evapora-

tive cooling. Paul Kennedy, MEPC for Chapter O2, gave a presentation at O2’s meeting about the Cool Vest. Paul spoke to us about it when he visited Chapter A last month. He demonstrated how long it took to cool down the inserts for vest– 14 minutes in a cooler with ice, pretty quick. He says when he stops for gas, he’ll put the inserts in his cooler with ice, gas up, grab a electrolyte-replenishing drink in the store, and the inserts are cooled down enough to put back in the vest and continue rid-ing. Sounds really helpful in this weather! You can check it out the website, www.Coolvest.com.

Just a reminder about protecting ourselves from the sun – so Important year-round. We hear so much about wearing sun-screen all year to protect our skin, but equally important, we need to protect our eyes. In his article in this month’s issue of Motorcycle Consumer News, Fred Rau talks about the scare and problems he has recently experienced with his eyes. His ophthalmologist is convinced that, in addition to a congenital defect, Fred’s 50,000-plus hours riding motorcycles contrib-uted to damaging his vision. Long term unprotected exposure to ultraviolet rays (UV-A and UV-B) can lead to cataracts, macu-lar degeneration, or skin cancer around the eyelids. It can also lead to ocular complications such as “snow blindness”, cataracts, and growths on the eye’s surface. Wearing protective safety glass-es (shatterproof, meeting Z87.1 designation) with 99% to 100% UV-A and UV-B protection can provide the best protection, whether riding your motorcycle or engaging in other outdoor activi-ties. Glasses should be close-fitting and wrap-around to prevent light or other harmful substances from entering the eyes. Be sure they fit comfortably when wearing your helmet.

The Mayo Clinic provides a guide to lens tint. Green allows true color perception, en-hances contrast and reduces eyestrain; Gray allows true color perception but does not enhance contrast; Brown is good in hazy sun, enhances contrast; Amber brightens hazy or foggy skies, excellent for contrast, minimizes eyestrain, but distorts color; Yellow improves contrast and depth perception in low light, good for overcast skies. Yellow lenses are my personal preference as my vision seems “sharper” when wearing them, and they can be especially helpful riding in rain.

Speaking of rain, I’ve been riding in too much of that lately – believe I’m starting to grow mossy! We had a presentation last month cautioning us against riding in lightning storms – believe it! Several of us rode to Conover for O2’s meeting August 20. I had a bolt of lightning crack right over my head (at least it felt and sounded like it) as I was exiting I-40 at Conover. I rode 3 blocks to the restaurant, dismounted and dripped straight in, quickly! Janice, Bill, Henry, Helen, David, and Bruce Wing were coming from Greensboro, and stopped to avoid the lightning. We were welcomed even though we were soggy! Stopping was defi-nitely the best option. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck.

At WOS, we’ll be outside (just like the old days!), so be prepared. Really hope we won’t have any rain, but bring rain suits. Good sun protection, glasses, sun screen, hats, and maybe even a Cool Vest will help us enjoy ourselves with all the activities and vendors!

Let’s all plan ahead and have safe riding in 2016! Safety is our Goal! Paula Hines, NC-A Chapter Educator

The month of August we visited all of our Central Chapter Gatherings; which this month includ-ed the T2 Albermarle School Tool Ride.

Bill and Henry continue attending the NC-W- Eden Chapter Wednesday Breakfast Ride which always is a different restaurant each week to eat breakfast, and a great ride afterwards. John

Dye was able to get in on the fun one Wednesday.

Bill, Dave and Carl rode their motorcycles and enjoyed a Veterans Coffee/Donut Day at Richard Pet-ty’s museum and garage. They got to tour areas that are not normally allowed to the general public.

We have continued to chase the Central Couple’s Plaque frequently, capturing 2 out of 6 times in Au-gust, for total of 19 times for the year. We got the Couples Plaque from B2 at our August 10th gather-ing.

We are looking forward to the Annual District Rally in September; hope you are planning to attend WOTS also and have a great time with other GWRRA friends. We again choose not to compete for the District Couple, but will be there supporting those who wish to go after the title.

Be safe in your travels and as always, hope we can see you at some of the other NC Chapter Gatherings, as well as our monthly Gathering on September .14th.

Our A gathering was opened by Chapter Director, Alice Myers, welcoming everyone (53 present), especially our new members—Jay Jinnette and Douglas Hawkins. We discussed sicknesses or anyone who need some special thoughts; then had a moment of silence. Great turnout for the Chapter Picnic on August 5th— 5 campers, 30 members and 5 guests. Thanks go out to the members for help in cooking, setting up, cleaning up, bringing sweets, ice and everything else. Cheryl greeted guest chapters as follows: District Team Libby Jennings and Rex & Diana Temple, N-Burlington, H2-Durham, G-High Point, B2-Winston-Salem, X2-Wilkesboro. G-High Point’s location has been moved to Pio-neer Family Restaurant 10914 N. Main St. Archdale, NC 27263. The Central Travelers Plaque was won by B2 Winston-Salem and will be given away at their

August meeting (2nd Tuesday). Three Couples were present (A, B2, X2) and the Couples Plaque was won by Janice & Bill of NC-A from B2’s Donald & Helen. Janice & Bill took it to Salisbury 8/15. The Couples money was won by Jan Dancy of X2-Wilkesboro. The vest drawing winner was Jan Dancy of X2-Wilkesboro.

Paula Hines, Chapter Educator gave an interesting talk about riding alert and riding safe. Tom noted that you should bring a kickstand holder with you to the Wings Over the Smokies because of the park-ing area. With some of the realigning of positions in 2018, the Chapter Educator will become the Ride Coordinator.

A’s Sunshine Lady, Linda W., recognized August birthdays, anniversaries and GWRRA anniversaries. The Murdoch Center basket, furnished by Carl & Nancy Allen, was won by Ron of NC-A. Thanks go out to Henry Jinnette, Chapter Photographer, for capturing moments of the monthly events,

50/50s were won by Gary Harris of H2 and Monica Huffman of G. Collected school supplies were delivered to Guilford County Teacher Supply Warehouse. See you at the next meeting, September 7th.
