THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25)

A NOTE FROM FR. MIKE PONTARELLI, O.S.M.
August 19, 2018
I don’t know what prompted Douglass Cross to write the lyrics for I Left My Heart In San Francisco, the signature song of Saint Anthony Dominick Benedetto, popularly Saint Tony Bennett. I’m guessing it’s either a nostalgic recall of the beauty of San Francisco or living lonely in Manhattan. Let’s consider the first – nostalgic beauty of a city on a hill. And of that, rely on beauty and its transforming value.
There is something about beauty and the beautiful that shapes our lives. Beauty changes and transforms people. The beautiful is beyond that which is subjectively pleasing – real beauty is objective. Say that to yourself one more time. Ketchup on a hot dog, pineapple on a pizza, or chopped hot dogs on spaghetti can be subjectively pleasing to some folks. Those people are
philistines! Walt Disney’s Magic Kingdom, especially at night, and Saint Dean Martin singing “That’s Amore” are subjectively pleasing.
Real beauty; is true art seen in the Sistine Chapel, real music as the Moonlight Sonata, a well-crafted sentence written by Dante, Dickens, Flannery O’Connor, or T.S. Eliot, a sunset over the Pacific with Catalina Island silhouetted in the distance, or the first holding a newly born baby human – these take our breath away and change us forever. They are substantially different in their form from the subjectively pleasing. Notice your golf swing against a professional’s or an amateur pitcher’s throw against Sandy Koufax’s form.
Our church building and our faith also transforms us as does any encounter with the beautiful. See beauty as a community of people gathered around Jesus, Our Blessed Mother, and St. Juliana, as a celebration of any sacrament or funeral, as Jesus is in our tabernacle, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, the way sunlight plays with our windows which teach us the faith; these rich experiences transform our ordinary experiences and inspire us to go beyond ourselves. Our breath is taken away and we are transported deeper into the Kingdom of God. The journey to higher realms begins with an experience of the objectively beautiful. Sit in church and allow sun light to shine through the windows onto your heart. Come to our parish church during Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Walk along the ocean especially at sunset and look into the far horizon. Visit a piece of art, read literature, listen to fine music. Talk with others about these experiences.
Beauty is only the beginning! Through beauty we are moved to seek truth and act justly. Those who experiences beauty are able to know and do the right.
Join us TONIGHT (SUNDAY) for our catered community meal and faith formation talk. Fr. Paul Addison, OSM will speak on St. Juliana and Servite Spirituality. Come to the 5:00PM Mass. Dinner is served about 6:15PM, the talk at 7:00PM, ending about 8:30PM. Please join! Tonight is funded through the PSA rebate. It’s who we are and what we do – St. Juliana – the Eucharist, Community, Faith Formation.
Fr. Paul will continue his lesson on the Liturgy of the Mass on Monday, Aug 20 at 7:00PM in the church. Along with the entire parish, I encourage Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, and Ushers (Ministers of Hospitality) to attend. Teens and college students are most welcome. If you’ve not heard a talk on the Mass for a long time – come. The talk will conclude around 8:30PM.
Attention to the new liturgical directive – change in the Mass – kindly KNEEL AFTER THE LAMB OF GOD – AFTER SAYING/SINGING GRANT US PEACE. Ministers come to the altar WHILE THE CELEBRANTS are receiving Holy Communion.

EUCHARISTIC MINISTER MEETING
If you are currently a Eucharistic Minister, or a newly trained EM, please join us on Sat., August 25th, 9am
in the church for this ministry ‘refresher’.
We will cover the new posture changes as well as our overall practices - the 'how-to's' if you will. Various items arise from time to time (example - when/how to reverence the altar, situations when people do not consume the host, etc.)—we would like to gather all the ministers of communion and discuss various questions, issues and concerns in one forum.
Thank you all for your service to our community. Your commitment and dedication are valued and important to us!

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.” Mt. 25:35-36
This is our final exam upon our entrance to eternal life. Will we pass the test?
There is a lot of attention lately given to people without housing or shelter. Many people use the term homeless, which is true but it is also a label. It is a way of dehumanizing people. After all, these people are humans and as Christians we should show them respect and dignity. St. Pope John Paul II said once "A society will be judged on the basis of how it treats its weakest members and among the most vulnerable are surely the unborn and the dying." People without housing are very vulnerable. Granted some bring it on themselves by drug and/or alcohol abuse. Many though have mental illness or recently lost a job and unable to pay rent or their mortgage and lose their shelter. It’s a very complex issue.
Recently, U.S. District Court Judge David O. Carter warned the County of Orange and its cities they will need to make significant progress on plans for new emergency shelter housing for the homeless, or face a possible court ruling or temporary injunction stopping the enforcement of anti-camping laws.
Many of you have assisted at the Armory which is emergency housing. Not sure what the status of this is going forward. Through St. Vincent de Paul, many of you have provided food for them. All this is good but while this problem is such a hot topic, now may be the time to move from charity to justice.
The cities and the county have their work cut out for themselves. What is the City of Fullerton doing on this issue?
As of now the city seems to be seeking input from the faith based community because of their past programs and experience helping the people without shelter. A few of the organizations are Interfaith Shelter Network (ISN), Fullerton Interfaith Ministerial Association (FIMA), OC United, and Pathways of Hope. In fact, Pathways of Hope is proposing a Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) apartment complex on Commonwealth between Brookhurst and Euclid called Keystone on Commonwealth. To learn more about it go to www.pohoc.org/keystone. They will have a Community Forum on the project on Monday 8/27 from 5:30 -7:30 pm. I encourage you to attend this meeting to obtain information and possibly lend your support for the project.
Also St. Philip Benizi Church has a proposal in conjunction with Illumination Foundation to provide up to 15 parking spaces for the homeless who have cars, providing a safe and secure environment. Currently, on any given night they have upwards to 35 people sleeping on their campus, so they are definitely impacted by the people without shelter. The parishioners are aware it is not a permanent solution, but it is an attempt to ease the situation. Their proposal is still being considered by the City of Fullerton.
People without shelter are a big County-wide problem. This is a brief article that just reveals the tip of the iceberg. I urge you to educate yourself on the topic and become an advocate. Besides being charitable towards them, let’s be just and act in the way Jesus would want us to.
God bless, Dcn. Chuck Doidge
