Reading is an important skill for developing second language competence.The success of a learning a second language is by taking the power of reading. Soby reading a lot, the students could improve their English skill. Teaching alanguage, English especially is very complex. In the classroom, we will facedozens of techniques applied to the students under the expectation that they areable to or easy to understand the lesson. For a teacher, it is necessary to find newteaching media to overcome the problems and not to forget to motivate thestudents.

In this study, the researcher wants to know the effect of picture as a mediato improve students’ reading comprehension. The purpose of this research is tofind out whether the use of pictures can improve students’ reading comprehensionon second grade at SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Kutorejo.

This study used Classroom Action Research (CAR) design because theresearcher wanted to improve the quality of English teaching and learning processin increasing students’ achievement in learning English in classrooms. The subjectof this study was class VIII A at SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Kutorejo which consistsof 19 students. They were participants of actions. Data of this study are collectedthrough direct observation. After collecting and analyzing data, the researcherfound that the average score of Pre-Test was 58,9, the average score of cycle 1was 69,5 and the average score of cycle 2 was 85,7.

Based on the result of the action research, it can be concluded thatpictures as instructional media can improve students’ reading comprehension inSMP Muhammadiyah 3 Kutorejo in year 2013-2014.

Media to Improve Students’ Reading Comprehension on Second Grade at

SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Kutorejo”.

Hopefully this Classroom Action Research can assist teachers who are conducting

reading learning activity in the classroom, so that it can be used to support

students’ reading ability. This Classroom Action Research is also expected to be a

reference for other researcher or teachers who are interested in conducting further

researchers which focus on the same topic.

Researcher is grateful for the aids and supports upon the completion of this

Classroom Action research, especially to:

1. Drs. Taufiq Burhan, M.Pd. as the first consultant, and Drs. Estu Widodo,

M.Hum. as the second consultant, for his patience in providing careful guidance,

helpful correction, indefatigable advice as well as suggestion and encouragement.

2. The head of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Kutorejo, who has allowes him to carry

out this research in his school.

3. The teacher, supervisor, and collaborator, for everything he gives in helping the

completion of this research.
