2ND

To be eligible to apply for the Student Paramedic vacancy you must already hold Full or Provisional Category C1 on your driving licence or be able to evidence that you have applied for your Provisional by submitting the relevant documents to the DVLA

3RD

DECEMBER

At the Stage 1 assessment day you will be required to bring your educational qualifications with you. If you don’t have the certificates then contact your school, college or the exam board to request copies. You won’t be able to take the assessments without them

4TH

DECEMBER

When completing your application form why not use Microsoft word or a similar software package to complete a spelling and grammar check before submitting your application. You can also save each section as you complete it to make sure you don’t lose your work!

5TH

DECEMBER

Speak to your referees before entering their information on your application form. You must include your current / most recent employer and your previous employers or an academic referee. We require 2 references prior to your allocated start date

6TH

DECEMBER

The Student Paramedic Training Programme is 30 months in duration and leads onto substantive employment as a Registered Paramedic with the Trust. There are 3 levels within the programme and more information can be found at www.wmas.nhs.uk/careers-staff-room/student-paramedics

7TH

The salary for the post is; £17,522.25 per annum during Level 1, £20,150 per annum during Levels 2&3. You will also receive an additional retrospective unsocial hours payment for hours actually worked. These salaries are prior to a £300 monthly contribution you make for the 30 months programme

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend a Stage 1 assessment consisting of a Highway Code questionnaire. This is a 30 question, multiple choice written paper. You can refresh your Highway Code knowledge by following @HighwayCodeGB on Twitter, by visiting their website or buying a written copy

Lifting is a task frequently undertaken by operational staff when responding to patients needs, therefore it will form part of the assessment process & the initial training course you will undertake. It is important that you prepare for this assessment by working on your general fitness levels, strength and flexibility

10TH

DECEMBER

The demands placed upon the driver of an ambulance are probably greater than any placed upon any other driver. During the driving assessment, we will be looking to see if you have maintained the standard you achieved when you passed your driving test. Hiring a larger vehicle will help you to prepare for this.

11TH

DECEMBER

Your interview will take place at Stage 2 alongside your driving & fitness assessments. Our interview is designed to learn more about you as an individual & your qualities, skills & attributes. You will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the role including the training programme and the Trust itself.

12TH

DECEMBER

You’ve passed, so what next? If you don’t hold your Full C1 you’ll be put in contact with our training provider who will guide you through the process. You must have Full C1 prior to your start date & financial assistance is available for this. C1 includes theory & practical tests and intensive 4 day driving course.

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail! Use this time to familiarise yourself with the selection process for the Student Paramedic role and identify your areas for development. Seek advice. Practice, practice and practice again. Get your family and friends involved, you never know, they might apply too!

14TH

DECEMBER

Level 1 of the training programme consists of a 14 week clinical course called the Associate Ambulance Practitioner or AAP programme & 4 week Emergency Response Ambulance Driving. These programmes are held at our Training Academy in Brierley Hill and facilitated by our Education & Training Officers

15TH

DECEMBER

During Level 1 of your training programme you will be deployed operationally working as part of a 2 person crew. You will be responding to our patients alongside a Paramedic or a Technician and under their supervision you’ll be practicing your clinical and driving skills that you have learnt at Training School

16TH

DECEMBER

As a trainee and as a registered professional you will be required to build, develop and maintain a portfolio. The standards required will differ at each stage but you will be guided by our Training Officers, your mentors and our university colleagues on how to meet these standards

17TH

DECEMBER

At Level 3 you are allocated to attend a university course where you will complete a qualification in Paramedic Science. This will either be at Coventry University, Staffordshire University or the University of Worcester. The course is a mixture of theoretical tutor led sessions and practice placement with the Trust

18TH

DECEMBER

We are a 24/7 service, available to members the public at any time, day or night and therefore our operational staff work a variety of shifts. This will include days, nights, evenings, weekends, bank holidays. All staff receive 4 weeks notice of their shifts but flexibility is essential!

19TH

DECEMBER

Throughout your training programme you will have access to a range of support from literature, online learning & the experience of your colleagues. Our Clinical Team Mentors work on each hub & are responsible for assisting with the development of new & established staff alike. Many of them are also on Twitter!

The Health & Care Professions Council or more commonly known as the HCPC are the regulatory body for the Paramedic profession. In order to protect the public, they keep a register of professionals who meet their standards. You must be registered with the HCPC to work as a Paramedic in the UK
