At Elio’s Foot Comfort Centre, Mario and Rob DiFelice blend old-school skills with cutting-edge technology

to make sure that every customer has a solution to their needs.

“We pay extra attention to people,” said Mario DiFelice, who has been involved in the footwear industry for over 20 years with his brother, Rob. “The customer who is coming in here with problems needs extra care if they are elderly and we will do that. We give everyone the same amount of attention, but if the doctor is sending their patient here we have to make sure we are an extension of that professional care. If the doctor has the trust to send a patient here, we have to take care of them.”

Since 1970, Elio’s Foot Comfort Centre has been taking care of people. The family-owned business just entered its 41st year of operation on Front St. in Thorold, but the business has a whole new look to it.

“We put a whole new face-lift in the front

with a new façade done with stone and stucco, putting in new doors, new windows, a new sign, some in-store renovations and renovating the production area in back,” said Mario. “It has been long overdue, and we want to help revitalize downtown Thorold. We are doing our part to show a commitment to the downtown area.”

After Elio DiFelice started the business in 1970, his two sons, Mario and Rob, were incorporated on to the shop floor in the 1990s. After expanding their square footage and product lines, the brothers invested a substantial amount of capital into machinery and training to accommodate customers and provide the best technology and care available. Now, the business has 13 employees and can accommodate any need when it comes to comfort. Ninety-percent of their inventory is orthotic-friendly footwear for males and females of any age.

“We have adapted with the times and went with more orthopedic services because there is an aging population here.” said Mario.

“We have gotten into custom orthotics, custom-made shoes and now we have hired professionals, pedorthists, a master craftsman shoemaker and do everything on site. There is a big demand for these products, and the more we are getting involved the more we are getting referrals from doctors who have patients with problems.”

With comfort in mind, the DiFelice brothers also are planning out how they can continue to keep their customers walking comfortably tomorrow and in the future.

“We are looking to expand at our current location, both on the sales floor and in the production facility, so we can accommodate the increasing demand for comfort footwear, custom-made shoes and orthotics,” said Mario. “Also, we want to expand our referral base with local physicians and reinforce to them that they can rely on us to keep their patients walking in comfort.”

A pioneer in making the “transition” to becoming a chemically-conscious establishment, Transitions Studio is a salon as well as a retail outlet dedicated to improving the overall

health of its clients and the environment. Owners Carlo and Tina Turavani have changed their approach to beauty care to one that is holistic and encompasses Zen traditions.

Their approach is not one that is new to them. Due to Tina’s childhood health issues, and those of family and friends, they have been motivated to live in this manner most of their lives, and have raised their children to embrace it as well. Tina is steadfast in her research to help develop safe and chemical-free products that help others live a healthier and more comfortable life.

From the products used and carried to the furniture and other design features within, Transitions Studio is completely environmentally-conscious. Hair dyes used are non-toxic, NO ammonia, smell , Paraphenylenediamine, coal tars, . Intensive research has been undergone into the products they offer, and they work with a chemist to provide customers with the safest and purest of products. They carry unscented vegan, raw, chemical- and gluten-free hair products including natural hairsprays, mousses, and gels, and their shampoos and conditioners will wash away most of the accumulated synthetics and petro-chemicals that have been built up in the hair from years of using chemical hair products.

Only natural skin care products are offered at Transitions Studio. One of their most sought-after products is their mineral makeup line. Not only does mineral makeup give the wearer a natural translucent glow, but it is made of all-natural non-micronized minerals, which nourish the skin as the makeup both camouflages imperfections and protects from harmful UV rays. Unlike traditional makeup, mineral makeup does not contain any chemicals, synthetic dyes, fragrances, talc, alcohol binders, or preservatives. As it is non-comedogenic and

contains anti-inflammatory properties, mineral makeup is gentle to sensitive skin, and will not cause dryness or allergies, clog pores, or aggravate existing acne. It is also water-proof and resistant to sweat. Transitions Studio also carries a full line of organic lip, brow, and eye pencils, and organic lead-free lipsticks, glosses, and mascaras.

Transitions Studio has been mindful to encompass all aspects of the salon in the effort to lessen its carbon footprint. Carlo and Tina support the Canadian economy by buying most of their products from local suppliers.

One does not have to be a client to take advantage of Transitions Studio’s plethora of chemical-free, natural products. Their unique retail outlet consists of hand-crafted, fair trade, biodegradable, vegan-friendly gifts. They carry an extensive hemp and bamboo line, which includes purses, towel sets, computer bags, scarves, and cleaning supplies. Jewellery made of healing stones that are crafted locally, as well as calming selenite crystals, which are used to instil peace and drain negative energy from the body, are also offered. Customized gift baskets are available for any occasion.

Carlo and his associate, CJ have become certified tricologists, which means that they specialize in the natural approach to hair loss and hair thinning. This feat has been long in the works. In 1992, a close childhood friend of Carlo and Tina passed away from cancer. Frustrated with the quality of wigs that were available at the time, she had asked them to find the means of providing others with improved hair pieces.

That same year, Carlo and Tina became dedicated to restoring the self esteem of countless adults and children throughout the Niagara region who suffer from hair loss by providing them with wigs and hair prostheses. Most of their clients had undergone chemotherapy for cancer, and their repressed auto immune systems from the treatments made them sensitive to fragrances and chemicals. Working with these clients emphasized the importance of giving care to the mind, body, and spirit every day.

In 1997, Carlo established the Canadian chapter of Wigs for Kids, which is the first non-profit organization in Canada that provides hair pieces made of human hair for children suffering from hair loss due to medical conditions including cancer, lupus, and alopecia. The ultimate satisfaction for Carlo and Tina is seeing the smile on the faces of children when they look in the mirror to find that they look like themselves again.

The mission of Transitions Studio is to provide clients with a healthy, safe, and tranquil experience, which becomes apparent from the moment one walks into the salon to the end of the visit. Its inviting atmosphere urges people to take the rewarding step toward experiencing a “transition” of their own.

Fernando De Moura was born in Madeira, Portugal and is the founder of the De Moura Winery Way and

head of the De Moura family. Their line of fine wines is uniquely named after members of their family. With this, they are able to share a little piece of the De Moura family with each of you.

Old World traditions from the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira Island with New World craftsmanship and quality from Niagara-on-the-Lake. These were the groundwork that influenced the De Mouras when founding The De Moura Winery Way.

Everything from growing grapes to bottling wine takes place on their 10 acre vineyard and winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake. This way, they ensure that meticulous care is

given to the production of their fine wines at every step of the wine making process. From planting new vines in the spring to harvesting from mature grapevines in fall by hand, to processing and racking of wine in real Canadian, French and American Oak barrels in their barn – they make sure that the wine that reaches your table is the most flavourful, highest quality wine you’ve ever experienced.

The De Moura commitment to outstanding quality is shown in the following wines. The 2007 Dref Cabernet Sauvignon is dark red with aromas of red berry fruit. It is medium bodied, having aged in new French and American oak, producing excellent character. The 2007 Mélange de Frederick is a blend of Shiraz and Merlot, this assemblage has pronounced blackberry

and cassis aroma with a hint of spices. It is full bodied and mouth filling with subtle tannins from 24 months of maturation in French oak barrels. The finish is pleasant and persistent. The 2008 Liew Chardonnay is full of aromas of fruit and melon and hint of spices. It is delightfully full bodied and mouth filling with a lingering finish of subtle oakiness. Come and visit De Mouras Winery Way as they have plenty of premium wines starting at $12.95 per bottle.

To discover how to pair these wines to food and cheese, visit their website at: thedemourawineryway.com. The De Moura Winery Way – bringing you the tastes and traditions of Madeira Island wines from Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The industry of craft brewers started to build 20 years ago. At that

time, not many people thought craft brewers would survive. Instead they thrived. People got excited about them. People started looking for things that are different in beers, not just global brands. Consumers wanted something with more distinction, more character, more of a story behind it that separates it from other products.

Well, I found a new one and its home is here in Virgil.

Meet Matthew Swan and Chris Pontsioen. Two people that worked together at Outward Bound Canada for ten years. They became close friends, rock climbing partners and traveled to many destinations around the world.

Matt and Chris realized that Niagara-on-the-Lake was

home to dozens of wineries, but there wasn’t a brewery. So they partnered up and created Silversmith Brewing Company. The first order of business was to find a location. They renovated the Old St. John Anglican church on 1523 Niagara Stone Road in Virgil. Built in 1894, the building is ideal to house the brewery. I visited the church and it has a quaint atmosphere. The bar was build with the beams from an old barn in Virgil, the walls are brick, and it has the original pine floor. The church still has its unique window style that adds a certain eloquence to the place.

The second order of business was to find a brew master. Now enters friend number three, Dan MacKinnon. Dan has a Masters in Science in Brewing and Distillery from the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. Dan started brewing two types of beers for Silversmith A Bavarian styled breakfast wheat beer and a black lager, or

“Schwarzbier” in German.

“We brewed these two beers to Old World standards with the finest ingredients. Both our breakfast style of Hefeweizen and our Black Lager contain only the four things integral to making beer: water, malt, hops, and yeast. The refreshingly unfiltered wheat ale delivers a distinctively smooth flavor “ explains Matthew, “and the black beer is a deep black colour with full chocolate and coffee flavours, yet is crisp and refreshing like a lager should be.”

Silversmith Brewing Company started selling their beer with great success in Toronto, London, Stratford, Kitchener and Beamsville and has won two awards for their Black Lager. So the next time you’re thinking of a wine tour, I suggest you stop by the Silversmith Brewing Company or give them a call at 905-468-8447.

I get questions daily from people with items to sell, be it one or an entire estate, about value, how best to sell and avoid rip-offs.

Let me give you some food for thought. In a house, the most valuable thing is the house. In most homes the “second hand” value of the content is worth less than $5,000. Why? Because items you purchase for your use or decoration do not add value. They are like a car losing value the day you drive it off the lot.

So, what are the items that do keep or increase in value? All items in demand by present day fashion, as well as rarities, unusual items, some collectibles and works of art. To find out which are these items, it is wise to have a reputable and knowledgeable appraiser sort out and valuate things before you start the selling process. When you know, you make better decisions.

In the era of the Internet there are no secrets, everything is available to everyone worldwide, and only quality and excitement leads to good prices. Items in demand today are fine wooden furniture, items such as 1880’s East Lake, Duncan Phyfe, Art Deco and Contemporary Design.

Also on the rise are: coins, military, watches, autographs, documents, corkscrews, and even early electronics.

The good thing is: that with very different taste and demand today the world is your buyer.

A special section should be made for coins, jewellery, watches and other gold and sterling silver items. If an item is not sellable because it is out of style, used up, or damaged, then it is worth it precious metal value. As a collectible or jewel it should sell at an adequate value.

Please feel free to come by, send pictures, or call for information.

Glenn Betts has a 30-year background in real estate sales with extensive experience in writing for real estate, fundraising, and a variety of other businesses. Here’s what he has to say about what type of real estate seniors are buying.

Not too many years ago, selling to seniors meant finding “senior housing.” That generally meant a “scaled-down” home that offered low maintenance, all-on-one-floor living, and close proximity to medical services.

But seniors have changed. While a few may still follow the old pattern, for the most part, today’s older set doesn’t want to retire to a box. They have no intention of spending their days watching TV and going to doctor’s appointments.

They may want a low maintenance home - because they have too many other things to do. They may also require a home with ample parking and lack of covenants and restrictions - so they can park a large mobile home during

the months when they’re not traveling.

They may want to move to be near grand-children. But if they don’t, they may need a multi-bedroom home because they anticipate having their children and grand-children as visitors on a regular basis.

Today’s seniors may want to live near a golf course, a pool, a health club, or a mall. They may want to choose a community with plenty of opportunity for volunteer work. They may prefer to be in an area that offers a wide choice of fine dining opportunities, the theater, with easy access to shopping.

They may even want a location where they can operate a small business - either from home or close by. Some have dreamed of a home business for their entire “working life” and finally have the freedom to go after it.

The difference is that people are staying healthy longer. Retired people aren’t finished having fun, but instead may just be beginning to have fun. After years of being tied to the “9

to 5 grind,” they’re ready for new adventures.

We treat our senior clients with the highest degree of respect and continually ask them about their goals and their plans, along with finding out what benefits and features are most important to them. Once we have collected all the information we can make suggestions and give advice based on what they tell us. For instance, if they plan to spend time traveling, you might recommend a gated community with security rather than a secluded location - for the safety of their home while they’re away.

Buying a residence as a senior citizen can be both exciting and daunting. The excitement stems from anticipating new beginnings in a fresh environment. It can be daunting because there are so many types of Senior Residences, finite resources and sometimes emotional hurdles to overcome. Knowing how to best serve home buyers, sellers and investors at all stages of life is another way Glenn Betts adds value to each real estate transaction.

LAW OFFICE

I met with Breck Foerstner, the owner of HorseWorld Emporium in St. Catharines. His fascinating background in business and farming explains his love for horses and why he purchased the

HorseWorld Emporium in the mid 1980’s. He did so, to share his wealth of knowledge with the horse world and also to continue his own love for the animal. HorseWorld is a full service tack shop, offering old fashioned service to a local and international clientele.

“At this time, I was looking for a challenge,” Breck explained. “Our emporium has turned into everything I could have asked for and more.”

Breck was taught how to ride horses by Ex-German Calvary Officers. He then went to school in the United States and road herd in Oklahoma. From there, he progressed through many different stages in his life, including working as a sales manager for Bell Canada. He then became sales manger for a grass seed company. From there he became a turkey, poult, hatching egg sales person. He started his own turkey breeder farm in the 1970’s and produced hatching eggs. He was soon put in charge of the European operation of Ralston Purina’s turkey and poultry division. During this time, he helped design breeder farms in Hungary during the Russian occupation in the 1970’s.

He then returned and bought his second farm north of Guelph in the early 1980’s. It was a turkey hatching egg production facility along with cattle and a sow operation. Unfortunately, after ten years, Breck suffered a serious car accident which forced him to sell his ranch. When he sold the ranch he bought a bankrupted travel agency in St. Catharines. Once taking ownership, he built the agency into the number 2 position in the Niagara Region. When the previous owner of HorseWorld decided to close the tack shop, Breck saw this as an opportunity to get back involved with his original love of horses.

HorseWorld Emporium stocks a huge selection of saddles and tack items for both the equestrian and western horse rider. For the equestrian, Breck has saddles made by St. Lourdes, Courbettte

and Excel. His western saddles are made by Billy Cooke, Circle Y, Reinsman, Abetta, Colorado Saddlery and others. Everyone has a little country and western in them and here you will find cowboy boots, hats, western clothing, gloves, scarves, jewellery and more. Their boots are from Justin, Canada West, Abbilene and Old West, while the hats are from Bullhide, Renegade, Bailey and Akubra. HorseWorld has a large selection of Wrangler riding jeans. They offer various health care products for the horse and dog. If they don’t have a certain item in stock, Breck can get it for you. Plus, his customers can purchase gift certificates or choose from hundreds of items on his website: horseworldemporium.ca.

As Niagara’s most versatile tack shop, HorseWorld Emporium also operates a 1,000 square foot leather shop where Breck’s staff can repair, make and personalize all kinds of leather projects. Here, customers can choose from English bridle leather, Latigo, garment leather or different weights of harness leather. HorseWorld can also provide brass hardware, as well as nickel plated rings and buckles for their custom jobs. There is also a well stocked consignment section.

As for Breck, he is also known as a barefoot trimmer for horses. A craft that takes many years to perfect. Breck says, “We want to make our customers happy and satisfied.”

Sheila Corriveau, Broker ASA and Carly Corinthos, Sales Representative, SRES from Coldwell Banker Advantage Real Estate Inc., Brokerage in Welland specialize in working with needs of the 55+ seniors market including helping them to downsize from their family homes to smaller, more manageable accommodations. The physical down-sizing process is by far the most daunting part of making a later-in-life move. Sheila’s and Carly’s tips and insights should help whether you’re the older adult ready to face this task, or whether you’re the adult child who has offered to help your parents with their living transition.

Begin in the areas of the house that you are currently not using. Many older adults are still living in the same houses where they raised their families. In most situations, there are areas of the house that are currently not being used, like the upstairs bedrooms, the basement family room or others. Start the sorting and clearing process in these rooms because it will be least disruptive to everyday life. These areas also often contain lots of items that have not been used in a considerable length of time and that will not be missed when passed on to children, grandchildren, charity or the auction house. Begin with the large Items in each room and work your way down to the small items. The rationale for this? It’s easier to start with furniture and the bigger pieces and you’ll feel like you are making some progress. If you start with the small items, you may get overwhelmed and frustrated before you even get started. Sort the items in each room as follows. Items that you want to keep as you move forward into the later stages of your life (this includes items you are not currently ready to part with or items that you definitely know you will want to move with you to your new home).

• Items that will be passed on to family or friends.• Items that will be sold via a garage sale or auction.• Items that will be given to charity.• Items that need to be thrown away.• Tell your kids that it’s time for them to collect the things that

they still have stored at your house.• Allow plenty of flexibility and time for the sorting and

downsizing and trust the process.• Remember that your goal is to simplify your life.

If there are items that you don’t have room for at your new place and you still want to keep, don’t forget that every community has convenient storage facilities to meet your needs. The rent is inexpensive and allows you more time to consider the items destiny.

Sheila and Carly have found that these tips have helped many in the past. They hope it will help you too. So when you are thinking of downsizing, please give Sheila & Carly a call at Coldwell Banker Advantage Real Estate at 905-788-3232 and they can help you with all your real estate needs.

TESTIMONIAL -- LEAH’S STORY I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome 20 years ago. I was prescribed standard pain medications. For many years before planning anything I would have to “wait and see how I was feeling”. While skating backwards, I fell hard and hurt my shoulder, neck and banged my head. By the time I got home, I could hardly turn my head. I tried to take care of the problem at home. However, the pain and stiffness became too severe over the next week that I could not sleep well. I was examined and xrays were taken to help diagnose my problem and to determine what type of treatment would be the most beneficial for me. Initially, my Chiropractor worked on my neck muscles and adjusted my upper back. I felt so much better and the stiffness and pain had started to subside quickly. This relief was new to me after suffering for so many years. The level of pain that I experience now has decreased immensely and I need less pain medication to function. Every day has improved significantly.

Plant & Rake Without the AcheGardening and yard work is deceptively strenuous. In a recent poll, 88 per cent of Ontario chiropractors indicated that working in the garden and yard were the most common sources of neck and back pain they treat during the warm weather season.

To help you enjoy the fruits of your labour during this yard and gardening season, we recommend you keep these tips in mind:

Stretch before you head out. Take the time to prepare your body for activity; always warm-up and cool down your muscles. Add a short walk and you’ll have topped off your routine with overall conditioning. Now you’re ready for your open-air workout.

THE RIGHT MOVESUsing the right moves can go a long way to enabling you to plant and rake without the ache. Positioning your body correctly reduces strain on muscles and joints.

LIFT RIGHTMake sure your back is straight. And always bend your knees. Carry the load close to your body. Avoid heavy lifting immediately after bending or kneeling.

KNEEL TO PLANTUse knee pads or a kneeling mat to reduce the strain while you plant and weed. Keep your back straight and stop frequently to take a break.

RAKE RIGHTEase the strain on your back by putting one leg in front, the other behind. Switch legs and hands from time to time.

ALTERNATEHeavy. Light. Heavy. Light. That’s the right way to handle those chores.

CHANGE HANDSTake the strain off by changing the position of your hands.

CHECK YOUR POSITIONAnd change it often. Kneel. Then stand. Or simply sit and relax for a while.

THE RIGHT TOOLSChoose tools that are ergonomically designed, with padded handles and spring action. Make sure the size and weight are right for you. And always choose the proper tool for the job.

Here are a few more tips to lighten your load:• a hose is easier to manage than a watering can• a good cart, or dolly, makes moving heavier loads a breeze• a wheelbarrow that is lightweight and has two wheels is a good idea• separate a larger load into several small ones• select comfortable, thick soled, supportive shoes• cover up with a wide-brimmed hat, wear gloves and sunscreen• use ergonomically designed, long handled, lightweight tools

Don’t forget to get-up, move around, alternate tasks, repeat your stretch routine, or sit back, relax, and have a cool drink. Try not to overexert yourself, and take three brief breaks at least once every hour. Give yourself a breather ... your back will thank you!

If you have back or muscle pain that lasts more than 48-hours without improvement, visit a chiropractor. Chiropractors play an important role in providing preventative education and early detection of spinal problems, as well as providing expert care for back, muscle, joint pain and injury.

St. Catharines is home to eight War Memorials, dating as far back as 1886. As the Town of Merritton, Village of Port Dalhousie and Grantham Township were

incorporated with St. Catharines in 1961, so too did their war memorials. Over the last several years much work has been done to research their history, and to assess and plan for needed repairs. Community support has been strong for the preservation of these Cenotaphs, which honour the men and women who have stood for our freedoms over generations.

The word “cenotaph” means “empty grave,” and acknowledges the loss of life that is represented by these stone and metal structures. Several of our War Memorials name those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Others simply and elegantly recognize the conflicts that have been fought by local men and women.

The front doors of City Hall are surrounded by elegant bronze plaques that serve as our Honour Rolls, with the names of men and women who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. Another plaque at City Hall’s main entrance commemorates the St. Catharines recipients of the Victoria Cross, the highest decoration for valour in the British Empire. Private Alexander Watson died during the Northwest Rebellion, and community sentiment was such that funds were raised to erect the figure that now graces the front lawn of City Hall. The oldest monument in the collection, Private Watson also honours those from St. Catharines who were lost in the Second Boer War.

Merritton (Merritt Street) and Port Dalhousie (Ann Street) each have beautiful Cenotaphs built circa 1921, and it is believed their statues were carved by artist Emmanuel Paul. These Cenotaphs have been recent greening projects of the St. Catharines Green Committee and are now surrounded with beautiful, new landscapes. The grounds of Victoria Lawn Cemetery house the Grantham Cenotaph and the Korea Veterans Associations Memorial. Also in the cemetery is the 10th Field Battery R.C.A. Memorial, built circa 1965, and the Royal Canadian Legion’s Monument, built in 1990.

The largest monument is the St. Catharines Cenotaph, located in Memorial Park, on what is now referred to as Veterans Way (St. Paul Street West). Unveiled on August 7, 1927, the first wreath was laid by His Royal Highness, Edward, Prince of Wales, who made a brief stop at the ceremony as he travelled through Niagara. At the time, the monument was a tribute to the memory of the 300 St. Catharines men who gave their lives for the British Empire in 1915-1918. Today, it also commemorates World War II, the Korean War, the United Nations Peacekeepers and the Canadian Merchant Navy.

This fall community members will see work begin on two of our memorials: the Port Dalhousie Cenotaph and the St. Catharines Cenotaph.

In July 2009, a heritage conservator was hired by the City of St. Catharines to evaluate the condition of these memorials. His report revealed that the St. Catharines Cenotaph is in need of significant restoration. The repair of this Cenotaph is a complicated affair, and this fall a team will temporarily remove its top to review the interior condition of the monument.

Last year, the eagle eyes of Port Dalhousie Legion member Brian Bowman espied space beneath the Port Dalhousie statue, and a quick investigation confirmed that the statue is lifting off its pins and will require re-installing. This work is set to take place this fall, and the Royal Canadian Legion, Port Dalhousie Branch 350, is set to contribute to these repairs, matching a requested grant from the Minister of Veterans Affairs as well as City funds.

The costs to repair the St. Catharines Cenotaph are estimated at $200,000 or more, and to meet this goal, fundraising projects have been underway since 2010. On May 12, 2010 the City of St. Catharines hosted a concert by The Stadacona Band of Canadian Forces Atlantic that celebrated the Canadian Naval Centenary. The concert had over 300 attendees and raised $3,000, thanks to generous contributors in the community. Significant contributions have been made by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 24 ($10,000) and the Royal Canadian Legion, Polish Branch 418 ($3,000) in support of the Cenotaph’s restoration. Other community members have also stepped forward and the total raised to date is $17,000.

These funds will be used to match a grant request to the Minister of Veterans Affairs, as well as funds from the City’s capital budget.

Community members can expect to hear more about these projects in future. If you’re looking for a worthy project for your donations, consider the needs of St. Catharines’ historic monuments. Their preservation ensures that Canada’s story of valour and sacrifice is shared with future generations.

It was 1991 at 45 years old weighing 250 lbs. Life as I knew it was over. Multiple diagnoses, organ dysfunction, allergies,

depression, chronic pain, hopelessness and consumed with fear, coping seemed more than I could handle. At 37 as my health began to decline I was forced to give up my corporate job and dependencies of alcohol, cigarettes, prescription and soft street drugs which I had relied on over the years to cope with my conflicts and confusions about life, relationships and communication. It seemed the more I tried to hide the more problems I accumulated until now my life literally had come to a dead stop. I had not yet realized that sometimes dead stop is where forks in the road of choice show up and long buried dreams are reborn.

My days were constantly consumed with a mentality that it was too late to turn the physical issues around or to unravel the way I reacted to life emotionally and mentally I was a total and dismal failure. In spite of a lot of inner work I believed I was incapable of ever sorting out so many unusual life

traumas that triggered survival mode that I lived in. I waited for death as the last DR. specialist had advised me to “Make sure my affairs were in order as there was nothing he could do to help me.”

The end of the road became the beginning of the key to my current healthier lifestyle on every level. I began to listen to inner leadings, to move in different directions and take new actions which sometimes seemed very foreign. I soon began to experience positive changes that seemed perfect for my lifestyle and needs. At the time I constantly reminded myself of my one vision to have a stronger healthier body no matter what I had to do to get it.

With some trial and error I gradually learned how to not only take my life back initially in terms of my physical health but also in terms of my mental and emotional health since I always knew that I was a whole being with a body mind and spirit.Over time I began feeling better and the pain I lived with constantly for years subsided,

my mind became clearer and I imagined new visions for myself. One day, a dream I had long forgotten to have my own business was unearthed out of the blue which was born out of my physical need to ensure I didn’t overwork my body in its healing process. I had come to realize I needed to be conscious at all times of my limitations on all levels since this was one of the key problems in why I had experienced two burnout phases in my career life.

As my health increased so did my dream and at 51 I stepped out of my comfort zone and became Niagara Regions first Life Coach as a Wholistic Lifestyle Consultant. Today I have designed a unique and powerful process to assist others in living in wholeness and reviving/designing their dreams. Since I learned it’s never too late to live a dream. So get that drawing board out and unearth those dreams.

If I can go against the odds so can you!

For over 180 years, the Beaverdams Church has proudly stood at its home in Thorold. From its first days when

Reverend Egerton Ryerson preached to his flock, the church has existed for roughly 65,700 days as a place of worship for the community.

Now, a dedicated group of volunteers is committed to restoring the church and giving it new life for many more days and years to come.

“I saw an article in the paper about the need for people to form a board before they could get going with anything to do with the church,” said Denise Bradden, the chair of the Beaverdams Community Church Board. “I thought if I didn’t volunteer then the church is going to fall down, and I think it is important to save it. That is how I became involved.” Bradden has only lived in Thorold eight years, but she “has always loved it here” and runs the local Morningstar Cottage Bed and Breakfast. Her commitment to the project comes from a genuine desire to see the church restored to its former glory, but she knows that the project will need the help of the entire community.

“Most buildings that are like this have a friends association that does the fundraising and we are looking at getting that going,” said Bradden. “We will be looking for corporate donations and getting the community involved.

“This is the community’s church. I think a lot of people are not aware of it because it is tucked away but it is a very important church, and I would like to see the community involved in the fundraising efforts. “Before we do anything we have to raise money. We have to get a certain percentage from grants but that money is drying up too. We would love to get members of the community involved in the fundraising end of it. That is where we need the manpower at the moment.”

Beaverdams Community Church Board member David Cowan has spent his entire life in this community and remembers the Beaverdams Church from days long gone by. “I grew up in Thorold and have been familiar with this building since I was a kid,” he said. “A few years ago a call came up for volunteers with the idea to restore it because it was getting into a worst state of repairs. I

responded and about a year ago a board was formed. There are eight of us on the board and we spent the last year planning what we are going to do.

“Just recently, the City of Thorold approved the plans that Denise (Bradden) presented at the last council meeting. Now we are in a position to start raising funds.”

There are so many different ways of contributing to the efforts in bringing the grand old building back to its glory. Now its time to get the ball rolling on restoring the historic monument that has been filled with many generations of local families.

“We want to have a concert, trivia nights and we are looking at having a bridal fashion show in the wintertime,” said Bradden. “We look forward to any ideas that brings about more community involvement.”

For more information on how to get involved in the Beaverdams Community Church Restoration Project, contact Denise at 905-688-4841, David at 905-227-7556 or send an email to [email protected].

Life After The Penny(NC)—Do you remember where you were on February 4, 2013 when the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) stopped issuing pennies? Perhaps you walked by one on the sidewalk but didn’t bother to pick it up — to your peril. There goes your chance of having a lucky day, as the old adage goes. Oh well, it doesn’t really matter now does it?

Research by Desjardins Group’s economists found that maintaining the penny costs Canadians an estimated $150M a year. Thanks in part to this analysis, the federal government announced last year that it would withdraw the one-cent coin. Don’t worry though; this definitely wasn’t a case of being penny wise and pound foolish. Frankly, the penny lost its shine ages ago: it costs 1.6¢ each to produce and its purchasing power has been greatly reduced partly because Canadians have been hording them for years.

By eliminating the coin, there will be a significant savings to the environment and

the economy in general due to the reduction in handling costs for retailers, financial institutions and consumers. As a result, the transition costs for the government to gradually withdraw the penny — which may be in the tens of millions of dollars over the next few years — will be minimal compared to the recurring annual savings Canadians will see down the line.

Gone but not forgotten

Although the RCM is no longer minting the penny, it will maintain its value and legal tender indefinitely. And some businesses will still accept it as a form of payment. As pennies are withdrawn from circulation, prices will be rounded to the nearest nickel for cash transactions. Non-cash transactions (debit card, credit card, prepaid card, cheque, etc.) will continue to be settled to the nearest cent.

Don’t cry for the penny, it had a good run

What will the RCM do with all the lowly pennies that are returned? They will be melted down and recycled, which will create a revenue source for the government to help offset the transition costs.

Great use for your old copper

If you’re the proud owner of a terrarium full of pennies and would rather not roll and return the lot to your local financial institution, consider donating them to a local charity.

Maximize Retirement Savings(NC)—Valuable tax preparation resources are available to communities across Ontario prepared by the Certified General Accountants of Ontario www.cga-ontario.org.

Here is a snapshot of tips to maximize pension contributions and your Registered Retirement Savings Plans:

• Individuals who are paying Canada pension plan (CPP) and/or employment insurance (EI) premiums may claim a 15 per cent federal tax credit and 5.05 per cent provincial tax credit on the amount paid.

• Contribute to your RRSP early in the year. If, for example, you contribute $22,970 — the maximum possible annual contribution amount for 2012 — at the beginning of the year instead of at the end, over a 25-year period, assuming a five per cent rate of return, you would have an extra $54,800 in your RRSP.

• If you are an employee who is making regular RRSP contributions, request that the amount of income tax withheld on your pay cheque be reduced in order to reflect the savings those contributions will bring. This is a more efficient way to manage your money.

• You don’t have to deduct an RRSP contribution in the year it is made; instead, you can carry it forward for deduction in a future period when you have income placing you in a higher tax bracket. Be sure you have used all personal tax credits before deducting your RRSP contribution.

• If you are at least 65, consider creating pension income by converting part of your RRSP to a life annuity or an RRIF if your financial circumstances warrant such a move.

• Contributing to a spousal RRSP also creates potential pension income for your spouse or common-law partner.

• Pension income splitting can be a good strategy to minimize overall family taxes if the spouse to whom the funds are being transferred has low, or no other sources of income.

• If you qualify for Canada pension plan (CPP) disability benefits, remember to check to see whether you also qualify for the federal disability tax credit (DTC).

Calming Effect: Women Can Overcome Leading Health Threat(NC)—Chilling out can turn down the heat on incident rates of heart attacks and strokes among women, according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Heart disease and stroke is a leading cause of death for women in Canada, and kills seven times more women than breast cancer. Gender is also a key determinant:women are more likely than men to die of a heart attack or stroke.

However, women can reduce their risk by putting themselves first and making healthy lifestyle choices. Key among them is managing stress, a difficult task for those juggling work, family and home life, says Bobbe Wood, the foundation’s president. Financial worries, project deadlines and ensuring the happiness of a child can often overwhelm us, she adds.

Almost one quarter of Canadians report a high degree of life stress, states a report co-published by the foundation and the Canadian Mental Health Association. Combine this with a woman’s risk for heart attack and stroke and you have a potentially deadly duo.

“High blood pressure and high cholesterol levels are major risk factors for heart attack and stroke among women. We have to take action by making healthy lifestyle choices,” stresses Wood. “Talking to your doctor and controlling these levels are essential for women to make good health last and lead long, full and vital lives.”

Diet and exercise are also important influences to combating heart attacks and stroke. Wood suggests the following to put you on the right track:

• three sessions of weight-bearing exercises and 150 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise (in minimum of 10-minute increments) each week;

• seven to eight servings of vegetables and fruit each day; and

• limited consumption of saturated and trans fats and sodium.

Smoking is an obvious culprit. Within one year of going cold turkey, a woman’s risk of suffering a smoking-related heart attack is cut in half. While smoking is an addiction and quitting may be difficult, with help and a plan, it may become easier, says Wood.

Aside from talking to your doctor, Wood also recommends women assess their risk for heart disease and stroke by taking an online quiz at TheHeartTruth.ca/quiz.

Stay Healthy When Stressed(NC)—According to a survey commissioned by the Florida Department of Citrus, 38 per cent of Canadians rate their stress level as high. While 77 per cent believe that eating a balanced diet – with seven to 10 daily servings of fruits and vegetables can help their physical and mental well-being – 36 per cent say that stress contributes to their inability to maintain a healthy diet. This can lead to illness, another common side effect for one in four Canadians.

“It’s important to maintain a balanced diet, especially when you’re stressed,” says registered dietitian, Lydia Knorr. “Citrus fruit and juice are delicious, easy to incorporate into meals, and they provide key vitamins that help support the immune system as well as overall health.”

This recipe is a healthy update on a winter favourite that incorporates Florida orange and grapefruit juices into a comforting dish.

Black Bean Florida Citrus Chili with Avocado Cream

Stir in beans, tomatoes, orange and grapefruit juices, tomato paste, cilantro and oregano. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally for 20 minutes.

In a separate bowl, mash avocado until smooth. Stir in sour cream, cilantro, grapefruit juice and salt. To serve:

Smart Snacking Tips(NC)—When you’re busy and on-the-go, having healthy food choices in a snap is a must. There are a lot of snack options to choose from, but not all of them are good choices for a healthy lifestyle. The best snacks contain beneficial nutrients and ingredients you can actually pronounce. Snacks with protein and fibre and that are low in sugar will keep you energized and curb your hunger so you can avoid making poor choices later in the day.

The best way to keep your snack habits in check is to know yourself. Pay attention to when you’re hungry and what you’re craving the most (sweets, salty and crunchy, etc.), and figure out some go-to healthy alternatives to fit these cravings. Then, take a few minutes each morning to pack smart snacks for the day and you’ll be prepared for when hunger hits. It’s called “smart” snacking not only because it’s healthy, but also because it’s easy, delicious and satisfying.

Portable snack options help prevent crashing or giving in to poor food choices no matter where you are. Try out these tricks courtesy of the Almond Board of California:

• Invest in a reusable snack bag or resealable bags to keep a stash of your own snacks in your purse, car or gym bag.

• Keep non-perishable snacks in your office or desk drawer, like

instant oatmeal, almonds, baked chips, pretzels, dried fruit and a jar of almond butter. Add fresh ingredients such as yogurt, apples, grapes, cheese or whole-wheat toast to create a variety of snack combinations.

• Seek out smart snacks on the road, such as pre-packaged vegetables and dip, edamame, fruit and cheese, baked snacks or nutty trail mixes that you can portion out mindfully.

• Snack bars that use whole, unprocessed ingredients are perfect for stashing in carry-on baggage.

• Bottled vegetable juices contain nutrients and fibre in a pinch; just be careful about added sugar.

Fraud Prevention Tips For Older Adults(NC)—Seniors are all too often the target of fraudulent phone calls and email scams. Many security experts agree that older adults can be seen as profitable targets for fraudsters – in part because seniors are often thought to have a “nest egg” and an excellent credit rating.

What makes this even more alarming is that research shows seniors who do become victims of fraud are not telling their friends or family. This is an important step to help law enforcement catch the criminals and prevent fraud in the future.

“According to a Visa Canada survey, approximately half of all seniors over the age of 65 who have been victimized by fraud do not tell anyone about their ordeal,” says Gord Jamieson, head of security for Visa Canada. “Individuals should never be embarrassed to talk to family, friends or their bank if they have questions or are worried they may be a victim of fraud.”

Jamieson points out that there are many things seniors, and all Canadians, can do to help safeguard their personal information and prevent fraud. He recommends the following tips for the young at heart:

• Always treat your cards as if they were cash, and don’t leave them in places where they are easily accessible to anyone.

• Always report lost or stolen cards immediately to your bank.

• Always make a list of all your card numbers and keep this list in a safe place.

• Always create a PIN that is hard to guess (e.g. not a birthday or phone number).

• Always be cautious when asked for personal information over the phone when you didn’t initiate the call.

• Never share your PIN – not even with family, friends or caregivers.

• Never keep a written copy of your PIN in your wallet or purse.

• Never lend your credit or debit card to anyone, ever.

• Never agree to a “free trial” or “sample” without reading the terms and conditions. You may be agreeing to future monthly charges – which aren’t free.

Simple Airport Security Tips For Seniors(NC)—Getting ready for a vacation can be hectic – especially if you’re a senior and not sure what you can bring with you in carry-on baggage. The following tips can make the experience less stressful and help get your next trip off to a smooth start:

• All prescription medications are allowed in carry-on baggage. To ensure a quick screening, make sure your medications are clearly labelled with your name.

• Essential non-prescription medication (cough syrup, eye drops, contact lens solutions, rash creams, gel pills, etc.) can be carried in containers larger than 100 ml in carry-on baggage. These must be given to the screening officer separately.

• Diabetes medications and equipment, including syringes, are permitted. Diabetic

travellers are also allowed to bring juice or carbohydrate gel packs.

• Wheelchairs, walkers, prosthetic devices and any other disability-related equipment are permitted through the security checkpoint. Keep in mind that prosthetic joint replacements often have metal parts – bring a note from your doctor in case your new hip sets off the metal detector.

• Medical defibrillators and small oxygen or air cylinders for medical use may be packed in carry-on or checked baggage with the air carrier’s approval.

• If you have any concerns about the screening process, check with your doctor before flying to determine if it is safe for you to go through the metal detector or be hand-wanded. If not, you can request a physical

search.

• You can use the Family/Special Needs security line. Screening officers at these lines are trained to offer additional assistance and the x-ray equipment is designed for larger items like wheelchairs.

• Finally, do not hesitate to ask screening officers for assistance with mobility aids and carry-on items as you proceed through security.

A Prisoner of Birth by Jeffery Archer

My first Archer book and I was so thrilled with the writing style and fast

paced storyline. Just when you figure you know how it’s going Archer puts a twist in that get’s you guessing again.

My customer refused to tell me what this book was about and just promised I’d love it. She was so right! I am doing the same to you. Pick it up, read it, and get hooked on Jeffery Archer.

Bell Canto by Ann Patchet

What a surprising book. A powerful businessman from South America has a lavish birthday party, with Roxane Cross, a famous Opera star as entertainment. Terrorists take the entire party hostage and Patchet takes her story telling to the next level. Terrorists and hostages start to mix and become friends, lovers, and future plans are made.

Patchet amazingly turned a tragedy into a life changing experience. You will be kept entertained right to the last page.
