Publisher’s NoteSummertime in Niagara Falls, what could be better? While we plan for our holidays, looking across the country, or perhaps a road trip into the United States, we sometimes forget that for hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, Niagara Falls is the vacation destination of choice.

That’s right, our own backyard could be exactly where your perfect vacation lies! Our region really does have it all, nightlife, gorgeous scenery, walking and biking trails, the-atre, wineries, world class dining and of course, the grandeur of Niagara Falls! Recently, millions of people worldwide held their breath as high-wire artist Nik Wallenda walked a tightrope between the American and Canadian sides of the falls. Watching as he per-formed this amazing feat, one was reminded of just how majestic the sight of Niagara Falls can be, as the water thundered beneath him, the spray drenching the tightrope as he made his way confidently across. For many of us, it’s probably been years since we had a stroll on Clifton Hill, took a ride on the Maid of the Mist or visited the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens.

It’s also no secret that this is an area rich in history, which is certainly coming to the fore as we celebrate the Bicentennial of the War of 1812! There are many historical landmarks to visit and events taking place that will mark one of the most amazing chapters in our community’s and our country’s history. From Fort Erie to Fort George, there are literally dozens of activities sure to please history buffs of all ages. From the Fort Erie Friendship Festival, which celebrates the unique and close relationship we have with our American cousins, to Fort George in Niagara-on-the-Lake with its stirring re-enactment of the Battle of Fort George, there is no shortage of places or things to see and do. For more information on the War of 1812 in Niagara, go to http://www.discover1812.com/ or call 905-984-3626.

Just as we believe that Niagara Falls as a tourist destination has as much to offer its own citizens as it does to visitors, Niagara based businesses and services also have much to offer and at The Silver Journal, we love to showcase local entrepreneurs and businesses that pride themselves on providing excellent products and great service to their clients and customers. We hope you enjoy the informative articles we have for you in this edi-tion and as always, encourage you to support locally owned businesses. Have a safe and enjoyable summer!

Lavender….is the colour named for the herb…. or is the herb named for the colour? It’s interesting to ponder. Lavender, along with Rose Geranium, Lemon Grass and Calendula, is the focus of this unique enterprise. Robert and Melissa Achal are the industrious entrepreneurs of this most interesting enterprise.

Lavender itself is quite an entity. The heady scent brings memories of days gone by; our mothers and grandmothers were partial to it. It has been a beloved fragrance favoured for centuries. When I was a child, after our baths, just before bed, we were doused with lavender talcum powder… my mother used to stock nothing but Yardley’s lavender talc. My Mum knew lavender would aid us to slumber.

Sleep induction and the intoxicating fragrance are not this plant’s only redeeming features. Robert and Melissa, who embarked on NEOB four years ago, present over 150 products at their Niagara-on -the -Lake shop. From culinary uses, burn relief, relaxation and even migraine relief, the therapeutic value of lavender is far reaching. Each and every item is produced on site from the luscious lavender

they harvest from a mere 12 acres! The first crop grew in a greenhouse, along with flowers for cutting. The lavender soon took priority as Robert and Melissa began to explore its invaluable properties and potential uses.

The lavender plant itself is lovely to behold. A low bushy shrub, classed as an herb, projecting spikes of greyish purple “lavender” florets as it stands proudly and stout. Valued in Europe as a cut flower in arrangements, it is not so often used as such here. However, that is how Robert and Melissa began their undertaking, which they describe as nothing short of an adventure, and continues to be so.

The plant takes three to five years to mature to a yield, peaks at fifteen years and begins a decline in production ending around twenty years. The essential oil is extracted from the plant by way of a distilling process, touching nothing but glass every step of the way. The glass distiller which towers fifteen feet tall provides the inertness required for purity. Distillation takes approximately 6 hours to complete and, ends with a slender but prized yield. One kilogram of lavender produces 10

millilitres of oil. The equivalent of two teaspoonfuls! It is a true labour of love, but well worth the task.

The never ending surprises of the terra firma of the Niagara escarpment never fail to amaze. Robert, who diligently tracks the crop yields, has discovered the crop planted on the “St. David’s heat bench” produces 3 times the usual yield of oil and has a unique taste and slightly different aroma. Robert has developed a very sensitive nose, equivalent to that of a wine connoisseur when discerning the differences. The lime content and soil composition are the reason, as the local grape growers have also discovered. The competition is on for the acreage: Grapes vs. Lavender!

With the youthfulness of this enterprise and the demand for the lavender, Melissa and Robert are focusing next on their upcoming cosmetics and perfume line. And of course, the local chefs are ready and waiting for the local lavender supply to enhance their creative cuisine. The boutique is open year round, and small or large tours are welcome.

The Bonus Of Experience Breeds Proficiency Beth Cockcroft

In 1965 Brian Sinclair began his law practice in Toronto, his hometown. Shortly thereafter he was offered a post in Niagara Falls and has never looked back. He credits his best friend in High School with planting the seed of becoming a lawyer. Years later, his friend landed in the world of high finance but they still keep in touch.

His practice is comprised of mostly Real Estate and the preparation of Wills. Experience counts for so much in the field of law and Brian has much when it comes to his special areas of expertise.

Having spent so many years immersed in the world of Real Estate contracts, he has honed his skills. Along the way he has developed many relationships with city counselors and has a comprehensive knowledge of the ins and outs of settling deals regionally. This helps expedite any deals which could otherwise become complicated and makes things flow smoothly.Brian keeps busy operating between 2 offices

and juggles 6 to 8 appointments per day. He has a staff of 2 to sustain his activity. “At one time I had a staff of five administrative assistants to keep the deals rolling on time” says Brian. “There was a recording breaking day when we settled 50 deals all in one day!”

With the years of expertise to guide him, Brian says he can “smell a problem”. This unique ability enables him to guide his clients through the mire of legalities which can sometimes be problematic in the real estate game. He usually knows the answer to any issues that crop up and most likely has seen it before.

Processing so many Real Estate deals have logically lead Brian to the field of wills. Anyone who owns any property at all most certainly should be sure to have a will. Brian has produced over 5000 wills.

As Brian puts it, “it is best to ease the pain”. With this he is referring to the court system of probate which can be costly and time consuming. With a well-planned will and

some thought put into what will be, there is often an opportunity to reduce the time and cost.

As busy as he is with his law practice, Brian has managed to amass a collection of some forty cars. Among them are a 1931 Model A, a 1947 Buick, an MGA and MGB. There are Fords, Mercedes and even a VW! Some he drives, some he just admires. A few are kept at his cottage and the rest are scattered and stored in the Niagara Region.

The bonus of experience breeds proficiency and helps reduce the time involved in processing contracts. Time is money and thus Brian is able to offer more reasonable rates to his clients and is proud to do so. He loves to meet with people and keep his practice and business upbeat. “I don’t plan to retire anytime soon” He quips enthusiastically. The best part for Brian is how much he enjoys doing what he does.

When I met Margaret, I felt immediately at ease. Although her office was bustling with activity the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The desk, though quite large, was not adequate to house the myriad of active files; this is a very busy lady. She manages her time well as she provides you with a gracious smile and open demeanour inviting you to relax and experience her full attention. No matter what issue you may have, when you meet Margaret you feel a sense of comfort, knowing, she will somehow bring justice to your world.

She loves to take on meritorious cases and has a passion to help people who have been wronged. Margaret A Hoy, Barrister & Solicitor, as she is officially known, has been practicing law in Niagara Falls for 25 years. Litigation is her specialty. “My nature is inclined to help and assist; I seem to attract the types of cases I am passionate about”

Criminal, Police Abuse, Employment Law and Personal Injury cases are Margaret’s chosen fields of specialized litigation practice. Much of her time is spent in the courtroom supporting the “underdog” as Margaret puts it.

Until recently Margaret had attained the highest ever award in Canada for a quadriplegic. The case has recently been surpassed, no doubt due to the bar being raised by Margaret’s case.

Margaret has had experience in all the legal arenas: the Superior court of Justice, the Court of Appeals, all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada. “Appeals cases are very intellectually stimulating with much attention to detail required, they must be flawless “she says and she takes these on with zeal, enjoying the challenge.

Attention to detail led Margaret to succeed in a precedent setting case involving joint bank accounts and the elderly.” Justice is paramount to my cause and thinking. I was proud to take this case all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada. The intentions of the elderly and the trust involved in this scenario need to be transparent. ” Margaret feels this type of issue can undermine the integrity of our society. The elderly need to be protected from having others’ hands in their pockets at such a tenuous time in their lives.

Often with Medical Malpractice suits there is no recourse for the victim. The medical profession and the insurance industry are the big players in this arena. Being colossal and callous they often turn from culpability and ignore the human suffering. Pathetic payouts are offered to avoid litigation, which is often a temptation to the injured party. Margaret warns her clients to beware. In the big scheme a judge and jury is the only route to justice and to protect others from the same possible outcome. These are the cases which Margaret savours saying “…something as simple as an apology would be most welcome to the person who has suffered due to medical malpractice.”

Medical Malpractice lawsuits are lengthy and costly; Margaret will work with clients to establish a plan. Financial commitment along with emotional commitment is required to sustain the medical malpractice case to the end.

When she is not in the courtroom Margaret cherishes the time she spends tending her horses. She manages to escape to the arena at least 5 times per week to exercise her mounts. Amazingly she also squeezes in time for cycling and kayaking.

Margaret is a member of the Ontario Trial Lawyers association and the Advocate Society. These organizations promote justice education and excellence in the field of trial work.

“There are so many circumstances in our society where only the Law can prevail to remedy an injustice. That’s why I do what I do”

You may have been driving for many years and take great pride in your safety record, but as you age, it is critical that you realize your driving abilities can change.

To continue to drive safely, you need to recognize when these changes happen and modify your driving strategies to compensate when they do. Aapex Driving Academy is here to help you. We are a team of professionally trained instructors who can show you how to modify your driving style. Our techniques will help you identify and strengthen your weak areas and prepare you for the next phase of your driving career.

Understanding the effects aging has on driving skills:

•Pain and stiffness in your neck can make it harder to look over your shoulder when changing lanes or to scan left and right when crossing intersections.

Modification: Aapex will show you how to scan earlier at these danger points so that you may use a blocker technique (other vehicles can protect you). We will show you how to minimize the need to do so many lane changes and how to preplan when lane changing is necessary. Using your mirrors effectively and efficiently cannot be stressed enough.

•Leg pain or body aches can make it difficult to move your foot from the gas to the brake. Overall physical condition can affect the speed in which you respond.

Modification: Slower reaction times are a big concern for obvious reasons. The answer is simple… early detection and more effective observation and planning. Aapex will show you where to look, what are you looking for, what do you do when you see it, but most important… how to minimize your risk on the road.

•Slower recognition of dangerous situations is a key factor in many of the crashes that involve seniors. Drivers are slower at spotting vehicles emerging from side streets and driveways, or to realize that the vehicle ahead of you has slowed down or stopped.

Modification: Space is a key factor in keeping you safe and informed. Aapex Instructors will show you how to manipulate the space around your vehicle giving you maximum benefits all the while keeping up with the flow of traffic. You will learn how to take back control over the environment surrounding your car.

• Keeping track of so many road signs, signals and markings, as well as all the other traffic and pedestrians can also become more difficult as you lose the ability to effectively divide your attention between multiple activities.

Modification: Education is key. Not all changes in your driving strategies have to be because of aging. It is important to recognize that our traffic system has become ever more complicated and difficult to understand. Many of our drivers today have never had formal training on these modern systems. Signs, road markings, center left turn lanes and traffic circles may all seem a bit overwhelming. The team at Aapex Driving Academy is here to help you navigate these new traffic control methods so you can get your confidence back.

Just remember that it is normal for our driving abilities to change as we age. The goal is to recognize our limitations and reduce the risk by incorporating safe driving practices.

That may mean something as simple as modifying when and where you travel to giving up the keys – but by no means should it mean the loss of your independence. Alternative methods of transportation should be welcomed and embraced because of the health and social benefits it can offer.

Aapex Driving Academy offers you peace of mind with a full driving evaluation to determine your skill level. Armed with the proper information and tools, you will feel confident that you are making the right choices for your driving career.

If it Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It, Doesn’t Always Apply! Beth Cockcroft

Eleven years ago, Stephanie and Jim Goertz, owners and operators of Jags Repairz in Niagara-on-the-Lake, made a move and have not looked back since.

Jags Repairz was opened 44 years ago by Jim’s folks. Originally located in Niagara-on-the-Lake, they followed the advice and recommendation of the suppliers for whom they were dealers, and moved the business to the outskirts of farmland. When his parents retired, Jim and his wife Stephanie inherited the business and decided “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” (referring to the location) and returned the establishment into the heart of Niagara-on-the-Lake where they are much appreciated and business is thriving.

However, the philosophy of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, doesn’t always apply. Jim recommends tune-ups and regular service for all your equipment and that is precisely what Jags Repairz provides: service to not only lawn and garden equipment, but ATV’s, watercraft, snowmobiles, snow blowers and motorcycles.

Jim and Stephanie carry many well-known and reputable lines of equipment which they sell and service. Repairs and maintenance are carried out by the full time mechanic, Joe, who has been with them for many years. The team operates well together at their Lakeshore Road location.

More often these days, people are recognizing the value of “buying better” as Stephanie terms it. If you buy good quality equipment and maintain it, in return, you will get years of service. The trend toward “disposable” equipment is on a decline. Often, items such as batteries can be more costly than the ticket price of the piece itself.

Many local professional landscapers are regulars that can testify to the superb service and quick turnaround. The folks at Jags know how important it is to get equipment up and running when you’re in business, and they step to the plate to provide good, old fashioned quality service.

(NC)—The Summer Months are full of high-energy, outdoor fun. Camping, hiking, beach trips and walks in the park fill every day’s schedule. Burning calories means you and your children are hungrier, more often and we are here to help. Mushrooms can give you the nutrients and energy you need to keep up with your family and the boundless summer fun.

• Mushrooms & Essential Nutrients 4 to 5 medium sized mushrooms provide important B Complex Vitamins. These essential B Vitamins include Thiamin and Niacin, both of which help to control the release of energy from carbohydrates, fat and protein, and aid in reducing fatigue.

• Mushrooms & Weight Management Studies have shown that fruits and vegetables may control appetite longer and foods with higher water content allow you to have larger portions with the same calorie content. Raw mushrooms are over 90% water and are a great low-calorie option, which can also be paired with your favourite low-fat veggie dips. 100 grams of mushrooms are only 25 calories with no cholesterol and are virtually fat-free.

• Mushrooms & Antioxidants Both fresh and cooked mushrooms contain a powerful antioxidant called I-ergothioneine. Crimini and Portabella mushrooms have the most, followed by White Buttons. Snacking on these varieties will help rejuvenate your body and assist

in improving your overall health.

Use this information when snacking, cooking meals and planning getaways this summer so you and your family will have the energy to play all summer long. A great, low-fat recipe for the summer season is our Veggie Tacos, at 95 calories each, done on the grill. (NC)—In the movie Iron Man 2, billionaire-turned-super-hero Tony Stark uses a pocket device to instantly measure his toxicity levels caused by the fictional reactor core in his chest that gives him super-powers.

In real life, such instantaneous personal medical technology doesn’t exist, yet. But soon, a new device, funded by the Canadian Space Agency, could pave the way for real-time analysis of everything from infections to stress, blood cells to cancer markers.

The device – called Microflow – is a miniaturized version of a flow cytometer (commonly used for a range of bioanalysis and clinical diagnoses). Microflow can spot cells and biological molecules rapidly in a stream of liquid as they pass single-file in front of a laser—all within 10 minutes.

It can then analyze the physical and chemical properties of molecules or cells in the sample.

Weighing less than 10 kilograms and roughly the size of a toaster, Microflow’s small size and light weight make it ideally suited for space, since it costs much more to launch heavier objects into space, and bulky objects are more difficult to stow.

Making it micro

Miniaturizing flow cytometer technology, and making it work in space, required the Quebec City-based INO to find a way to keep the fluid stream small and from becoming unfocused in weightlessness.

Led by principle investigators Dr. Ozzy Mermut from INO and Dr. Luchino Cohen from the Canadian Space Agency, the Microflow team built a device that suspends particles in just a tiny amount of liquid. Once the particles are detected in this structure, the device transfers the data to a USB key for analysis.

Uses in space

Microflow will be put to the test on the International Space Station during Canadian Space Agency Astronaut Chris Hadfield’s six-month mission in 2012-13. If the technology proves successful in space, it could revolutionize how astronauts are able to diagnose

and treat themselves and others throughout long-duration missions by allowing the crew to test for medical conditions without having to send samples back to Earth for analysis.

Uses on Earth

Microflow could allow people in remote communities to be tested quickly for things like infectious disease, thereby reducing healthcare costs and putting hospital-level care into the hands of more Canadians. It might also help reduce the travel required for medical analysis by testing people in their home communities. The technology could also allow food and agricultural processing plants to run on-site quality control inspections and tests.

Pain is something that almost all of us are forced to deal with from time to time. There are almost as any kinds of pain as there are problems that cause it. If you understand what causes pain it is much easier to find a solution. Pain means that there is inflammation present and that means that the cells that are in the painful area are damaged and enlarged. Of course that can happen from many things, from too much exertion causing sore muscles, to a flare up of an arthritis condition, to a traumatic injury. The only thing that is certain is that they all hurt and we would much prefer to live without that pain.

When you feel pain, in order to reduce or eliminate the pain it is necessary to reduce the inflammation. Most topical analgesic creams work on the surface of the skin and act as a pain mask. In order to deliver real and lasting relief it is necessary to address pain where it originates and that is at the cellular level. When MyoNatural is applied to the surface of the skin it begins to penetrate the dermal layer which is the eight layers of skin that we all have. The cream travels to the root source of the pain and not only reduces inflammation but also assists in rebuilding damaged cells.

In addition, MyoNatural also contains a lactase inhibitor which helps stop the build up of lactic acid which allows people to stay active longer before tiring. Regardless of what your pain issue is MyoNatural offers a money back guarantee that if you are not satisfied with the results you get your money back.

Understanding What Causes Pain

When someone tells me that a product is guaranteed to work, I am immediately suspect. As a pain sufferer for over 35 years I have tried over 50 different creams , lotions, potions etc.etc. I was working at a trade show when I discovered this cream called MyoNatural. I was a perfect candidate as I had been in constant pain for about 3 days and had 3 more days of walking on concrete to look forward to.

I turned up the next aisle and looked directly into an eight foot poster of Super Bowl MVP, Tom Brady. The caption read “I use MyoNatural because I have no time for pain.” I thought…me too.

One thing lead to another and a few minutes later I was talking to the President of the company and I guess he liked my story because he put a tube in my hand and simply said to rub it where it hurts. I walked immediately to the washroom and did what I was told. I began to walk back to the booth and by the time I got there not only was my pain reduced, it was gone.

I was totally shocked and wanted to know how long the relief would last. When I found out the relief would last 4 hours and it was safe to use all day and there were no contra indications with any other medicine, I knew right then and there this was a life changing experience.

Since then my company has secured the global distribution rights for MyoNatural, put hundreds of thousands of tubes into the hands of Canadians, and offered MyoNatural with a money back guarantee.

There has been a trend in offering funeral services in Ontario which step away from the traditional funeral home ceremony. These services provide everything a family needs during this difficult time, but in a less-structured atmosphere.

“We provide a funeral service in a less formal setting” said Robert Passfield of Passfield Mortuary Services. “We offer the respect and professionalism in a relaxed environment.”

Passfield opened his business in 1995 to provide funerals in a less formal situation. As a fully-licensed service, Passfield provides all the necessary consultation, documentation (certificates and registration), merchandise, and transportation needs.

Visitation periods are left to the discretion of the family or friends, as are any religious services. No embalming services are offered, but cremation services, which Passfield said constitute the majority of the business, are available, as well as direct burial services.

Another important aspect is that Passfield encourages families to take part in the planning and implementation of a graveside or memorial service. Venues for memorial services are usually arranged in places where the family feels most comfortable, such as a hall, a church setting, or in the home.

“Before World War II, families were much more involved in the funeral process,” said Passfield, citing that the departed was usually in the home for family and friends to pay their respects. “But after that time, homes got much smaller, and locations outside the home such as a funeral parlor became the norm. We offer a return to more family involvement from the structured service of the traditional funeral home.”

Passfield said this trend towards a less-structured funeral arrangement began in Thunder Bay in 1989, and has grown throughout the province since that time.

Passfield noted that a lot of his time is spent with pre-arranging and pre-payment of his services. He added that most children wish to have all the arrangements in place for their older loved ones who may not be able to mentally or physically make these arrangements.

With more than 25 years as a funeral director, Passfield is a firm believer in strong community relations.

“Word of mouth has been my best advertising,” he said from his Linwell Road office in Saint Catharines. “In the six months we were open in 1995 we worked with 15 families. Now we do upwards of 170 families per year.”

(NC)—Would a messy fridge deter you from dating someone new, or maybe even be the cause to break off a relationship?

In a recent survey conducted by Samsung Canada, when respondents were asked if they were starting to date someone new and they saw that the person’s refrigerator was messy, the answers revealed that 57% would be turned off and would say something about it – and 8% would even consider breaking off the relationship. While these sound extreme, taking care to organize the inside of you fridge could improve your love life, but more importantly, it can lead to a healthier lifestyle.

In addition, 43% agreed that if they can’t see something in the refrigerator, they won’t eat it, so a messy fridge can stop many people from eating better. Another 61% of respondents admit they forget about produce tucked away into fridge crisper drawers because they can’t see it.

According to Kelly Anne Erdman, the performance dietitian for Team Canada at the 2012 London Olympic Games, the way we visibly arrange food in our fridge can encourage us to eat better. “Taking a few moments to properly organize your fridge can make all the difference in a healthier lifestyle,” says Erdman. “Like dating, first impressions can be important. We tend to eat what we see first when we open the fridge, so a fridge that isn’t organized for healthy eating can lead to poor food decisions.”

Samsung says its ‘twin cooling system, lets fresh produce live anywhere in the fridge, so Canadians can keep healthier options within easy sight and reach for the whole family. It also means that there’s no need to limit fresh produce purchases to what will only fit in the crisper. It keeps produce fresher longer versus conventional fridge technology, giving you less food waste and fewer trips to the grocery store. If you’re looking for fresher solutions to store produce at home, start by organizing your fridge. Group foods together to inspire recipes. For example, pairing fresh produce and herbs with main meals like chicken or fish can inspire a stir- fry. This type of organized creativity will create quick, easy and balanced meals for families on the go.

Delectable fare, a welcoming atmosphere and a bit of low-key entertainment await you at Sami’s Restaurant. Leave out the drums, have a little music and dine in a tranquil, yet vibrating space. The art and character come together in a warm blend. Sami himself is an artist, which is evident in the decor.

Sami began cooking in restaurant kitchens at a very young age. From Niagara Falls to Vancouver, in every kitchen in which he worked, his observations were simple

and never forgotten: organization and preparation will result in proper execution. In other words, your food will be hot and fresh when it is placed before you. Sami’s intention is to provide this to you in an understated sophisticated setting, which he has most certainly accomplished.

“Martinis and Tapas”, who can resist? Every Thursday night is Ladies’ Night with half price tapas and an open microphone. Friday night is what Sami terms “Folky Friday” with quality entertainment, acoustic style and is highly regarded as date night. Tapas are also served on Fridays.

Don’t wait until dinner; lunch is also popular at Sami’s. When was the last time you had a

Monte Cristo or Rueben Sandwich? If you haven’t ever tried these classics, Sami’s is the place to give them a whirl. Weekly features keep the menu attractive, along with the core menu items: salmon, steaks, chicken and calamari.

Sami’s has evolved just as it was envisioned: a great place for a people to spend an enjoyable evening. Well rounded with excellent cuisine, soothing gentle entertainment, and best of all, easy on the pocketbook.

(NC)—If your Internet habits are becoming unhealthy and hindering your relationships in the real world, it may be time to step away from the computer and back into reality. Here are a few suggestions to get back on track:

Are You An Online Addict?Find an accountability partner. Tell a trusted friend or family member about your addiction and work on a system to limit your time online. Don’t go “cold turkey” all at once, but start by cutting back by an hour or two. Report back on the progress you’ve made each day.

Change your perspective. Sometimes life online may seem a lot better than what you see and hear about in the daily news. But escaping to a virtual world won’t change anything. Make a positive difference by using your time to volunteer or to help someone in need. Organizations like Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (www.ccfcanada.ca) provide children in developing countries with food, clean water, education, and hope. Through sponsorship, you can write letters to a child living in poverty and experience the joy of receiving a drawing or a handwritten letter from someone who may have no idea what the Internet is.

Get out there. Explore a new neighbourhood Hone a new skill. Join a running club. Take salsa

dancing lessons. Meet with an old friend for coffee. Creative opportunities abound for those who are looking for more face time.

(NC)— Right now many Canadians are enjoying the warm summer temperatures from patios and docks, knowing that at the end of a scorching hot day inside, there will be a cool breeze coming from the vents – if they work. Do you remember to get an annual service maintenance for your air conditioning?

“Your air conditioner should be maintained annually to avoid costly equipment repairs and to ensure that you’re cooling your home as efficiently as possible” said Dave Walton, director of home ideas for Direct Energy. “A lot of homeowners have the attitude ‘if it’s not broken don’t fix it’ towards their furnace. Maintaining a furnace will allow it to run more efficiently and help you save money on their energy bills.”

Furnace maintenance is just as important in the summer as well, Walton points out, because believe it or not, your furnace and air conditioner have more in common than you might guess. While you’re comfy cool enjoying the cool air at home, your furnace motor is pushing the cooled air to your rooms. The blower motor helps circulate the cooled air from the air conditioner through the duct work of your home.

Avoid the September rush, he says, and book your furnace maintenance before the cold weather hits so you can keep enjoying the last few days of summer.

More information on air conditioner maintenance is available online at www.directenergy.com or toll-free at 1-888-334-8221.

A Maintenance A Year Keeps Your Furnace From Falling Out Of Gear

(NC)—Most people have experienced the shriek of a smoke alarm when cooking a meal or stepping out of a steamy shower, even when there is no hazard present. The instant reaction is to find a way to silence the alarm. Unfortunately, some people may even take it down to make the piercing sound stop. To avoid the problem in the future, many choose not to reinstall the smoke alarms, creating a potentially deadly situation.

In fact, during the period 2006 to 2010, the Ontario office of the Fire Marshall reports that for one-third of residential fires where there was a fatality, no smoke alarm warning occurred.

“Installing the appropriate smoke alarm and keeping it properly maintained can ensure the maximum safety for your family and ultimately save lives,” says Dr. Ehab Zalok, assistant professor in fire safety engineering at Carleton University.

Recently, Universal Security Instruments introduced a new IoPhic smoke and fire alarm with breakthrough smart technology that virtually eliminates nuisance alarms and protects families against slow smoldering and fast flaming fires. It is the first new smoke alarm technology to launch in more than 30 years and first ever smart alarm.

“Disabling smoke alarms after a nuisance incidence is a very serious problem and can lead to extremely dangerous situations for families,” says Dr. Zalok. “The best solution to protect your family is to install a smart smoke alarm.”
