THE SANDY KEY JANUARY 2015

Mr. & Ms. MAST By Sydney Battaglia

Mr. and Miss MAST is a pageant for both

girls and boys to compete in the typical

events of Formal Wear, Question and

Answer, and Talent. It will be held on

February 20th, 2015 in Building 77. The

event begins at 7 p.m., but participants

will arrive at 6:30 p.m. Baked goods and

beverages will be sold the night of the

event. Tickets are $5 if bought in

advance and $7 on the night of.

Fall Festival Recap By Kaylie Haberstroh

The Fall Festival, held in building 77,

was definitely a great way to end the

season. About 50 Key Clubbers attended

the event and were able to raise over 400

dollars for Amanda’s Healing Hearts, an

organization run by MAST alumni Nate

Librizzi’s sister. The event was not only a

total success, but very fun as well. There

was pizza, pasta, dessert, and even a hot

chocolate bar, with various toppings and

flavors to add to the drink. Live music was

provided by some of MAST’s finest

musicians, and really created a cozy

atmosphere. Most importantly, foursquare

was

of course played outside, even though

the weather was a bit nippy.

While it’s great that the event was

such a good time, what matters most is

how much money our club was able to

raise for Amanda’s Healing Hearts. The

organization uses donated money to

purchase gifts for children in hospitals, in

hopes of keeping their spirits up. The

money our club raised was able to

provide many sick children with gifts that

were able shed a little bit of light on their

situations.

There will also be a raffle for the position

of student judge, a different student for

each event. Raffle tickets will be sold the

night of for $2. All of the proceeds of the

event will go toward the Stop Hunger

Now Foundation helps package and

deliver food and life-saving supplies to

people around the world who need it.

The event will be a really fun way to help

people in need.

Introducing Division 9’s New Lieutenant Governor By James M. Abbatichio

elect of High Tech’s Key Club as only a sophomore. She went on to impress me even more by drastically improving involvement and productivity of her club by a huge margin; High Tech went from being one of the least active Key Clubs in our area to being one of the most active, more than tripling their Fall Rally attendance from last year. Emma is a caring person who is an extremely good listener. She sincerely cares about what everyone has to say and that is definitely one of the things that make her such a great leader. I am proud to call her my friend and excited to see what great things she’ll do with her club and her division in the coming months after she has officially been appointed LTG!

As we rapidly approach the new service year, all types of exciting things happen. One of the most important steps to transitioning into the next epoch of exciting service is selecting a new lieutenant governor to unite and lead the schools in each area. This service year, our LTG has been Tara Engelken, a loyal and dedicated member of not only the NJ Key Club community, but the MAST Community as well. The New Jersey Board will maintain its MCVSD fever for yet another year; continuing the legacy of Tracy Vollbrecht and Tara Engelken is the lovely Emma Clark of High Technology High School. I’ve known Emma for about a year and a half now, having first met her at one of our service projects during my junior year. When I met her I was impressed to find out she was the president-

If you have not heard by now, District Convention (DCON) will be held on March 27 to the 29 in Long Branch. District Convention is the closing weekend for the Key Club year. Each year the Marine Academy of Science and Technology sends about one hundred students to DCON. It is one of the biggest events that Key Club holds and is an amazing experience. MAST leaves mid day on Friday and the convention lasts until Sunday afternoon. When we arrive, the school checks in and each group is assigned a room. The people who are sharing a room are assigned prior to the actual day. There are four people to a room normally but once we arrive and things have settled down you can switch with others to room with who you want. During the weekend MAST arrives at the meetings, meals, and events together. Each person will be given a number and is responsible for knowing the person who comes before you and after you in the count off. This is the way teachers know that everyone is present. The whole weekend everyone will be in business professional and there will be students’ checking to make sure everyone is in appropriate attire. That Friday we arrive there will be a dinner and a night session. During each session our club cheers for the board members that are from MAST. This year they are Tara Engelken and Dan McCormack. MAST is always the loudest club there and has a signature cheers. After the night session we are assigned a room to attend caucuses of each candidate for the 2015-2016 Key Club board. Friday night, there will be a casual dance that everyone is welcome to attend. Curfew every night will be 12:30. This means that everyone should be in their rooms and no one is to leave their room for any reason. The next morning everyone must be out of their rooms by a certain time to head down to breakfast

together. After breakfast there is a session discussing the success of the year and the workshops held that afternoon. Each student is expected to attend four sessions. These sessions vary from talking about the Key Club board to what it means to be a general member. After sessions are over everyone breaks for lunch and you have a few hours of free time. You can go down to pier village or stay and watch the talent show. After free time everyone meets for dinner. The night session is awards for schools and the governors awards to the lieutenant governors. Saturday night there is a formal dance and the lieutenant governors dance with the winners of a raffle. This raffle takes place during the whole weekend and you pay to put your name in to dance with a member of the board. After the dance, you must pack all of your things and be ready to leave. The chaperons will inspect your room before you can go to sleep that night. Sunday morning starts off with breakfast. The last session is the final remarks and the retirement of the old board and the installment of the new board. Once that session is over you are free to leave once you notify a teacher you are leaving with a parent. The whole weekend is fun and you get to meet a lot of new people. Everyone is there that shares the same passion for service as you do. Going to DCON inspired me and showed me just how much our club makes a difference. MAST holds an important presence at DCON and I would dislike to see us lose it. The whole weekend is a fun time to hang out with your friends and get to know more about the club you belong to. If you have any questions about DCON please ask any officer and I am sure we will tell you how great it is. Hope to see you there!
