On January 22, RVH will welcome nine surveyors from Accreditation Canada to our health centre. They are not here for a ’real’ survey, rather a mock or simulated survey. However, it is still an important opportunity for us to learn what we are doing well and areas of opportunity. The surveyors will join us January 22 - 24 and as always, they may stop and speak with any member of our team as well as patients. Please answer any questions to the best of your knowledge and share with them the many positive things you have helped our organization accomplish. Remember: the surveyors are our peers and they’re here to learn more about your contribution to the care RVH provides. Our full accreditation will take place in early 2019 so this is a tremendous opportunity for us to learn and be prepared well in advance. Cardiac Intervention Unit NOW OPEN! Advanced cardiac care is now available in North Simcoe Muskoka, ensuring heart patients have the same quick access to lifesaving heart services as peo- ple throughout the rest of Ontario. Premier Kathleen Wynne and Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins were at RVH to celebrate the opening of RVH’s Simcoe Muskoka Regional Heart program, an innovative partnership with Southlake Regional Health Centre. The celebration was held in the fourth floor shelled space adjacent to the new Cardiac Intervention Unit. The bright, 16-bed, 14,300 square-foot unit includes two procedure rooms featuring first-in-Canada technology to perform cardiac angio- grams and angioplasty. RVH’s highly-specialized cardiac team has already begun providing advanced care in the state-of-the-art unit and since launching last week, performed 15 angio- grams. This fall RVH will expand its cardiac services to include angioplasty. RVH has always planned for a cautious, phased ramp-up of these complex car- diac services to ensure patients throughout the region receive safe, high quality care. Complex cases will continue to be referred to other cardiac centres. Until now, North Simcoe Muskoka was the only region in the province without an advanced cardiac centre, meaning 3,600 heart patients travelled to centres outside the region for lifesaving heart procedures every year. When it comes to the heart, time is muscle – so not only will this regional program be a game-changer for North Simcoe Muskoka heart patients, it will be a lifesaver. It’s nomination time again! Do you know a col-league who lives the RVH values of Work Together, Respect All, Think Big, Own It and Care, every day –

always – without exception? If you answered ‘Yes’, don’t let your colleague, staff or leader’s efforts go unnoticed -- nominate them for an RVH Board of Directors’ Award of Excel-lence. Any member of Team RVH may nominate another – there are no re-strictions. The nomination package has been simplified to make it easy for you to nominate someone. The submission will be scored on the quality of the examples you give illustrating how the nominee lives our values. Your submission can even be point form. Just remember to provide clear and concrete examples. The categories include: staff (including co-ordinators and supervisors), physician, manager/director, volunteer and team. Nomination packages, due Friday, February 16, can be found on the intranet home page. If you have any questions regarding the nomina-tion process, please contact Wendy Sallows at extension 41200 or [email protected] or Nicola Charity at extension 41029 or [email protected].

For the month of January Tara will be talking about the healthy way to shed those unwanted extra pounds. Stay tuned - we will let you know who is on-air next.

RVH Royal Review RVH Royal Review Foundation News January 18, 2018

Dear Rosalyn (Rowe),

Sorry I didn’t get a chance to send this to you yesterday; it was my last day delivering and I was going right until 4:00! I just spoke with my co-worker who delivered the gifts to the family you sponsored this year. She said they had so much fun, were joking that they needed to put on their sunglasses so they didn’t see each other cry. She said she turned up Christmas music in her car while they carried everything back and forth, that it was amazing how much stuff there was and how Mom was totally shocked by what was delivered to her home. I know I say it every year, but by doing what you are doing you are touching more lives than just yours and the family that is being sponsored – my co-workers and I get to be a part of it too! I can’t thank you enough for continuing to participate in this program. Merry Christmas! Laura Cole Caseworker County of Simcoe, Social Services Division

Road supervisors clear the way for advanced cardiac care at RVH!

It was cold outside but Derek Burke and Marc Youell from the Simcoe County Road Supervisors Association made a heart-warming stop at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in De-cember to drop off a $1000 donation for Advanced Cardiac Care. The funds were the proceeds from a summer golf tour-nament at Bonaire Golf Club which drew over 100 participants who work in the sector. To date, the Association has donated $19,600 to support exceptional patient care at RVH in areas such as stroke and rehabilitation, cancer care, and now our cardiac unit

Dr. Derek Benjamin has assumed the role of Interim Chief of the Hospitalist Department. Dr. Benjamin is a member of the Division of Nephrology. He graduated from the

Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University where he also completed his residency program. He complet-ed a fellowship in Nephrology at Queen’s University and has been on staff at RVH since 2002. In addition to this new role, Dr. Benjamin is also acting as Interim Chief of the Department of Medicine at RVH. Thank you to Dr. Roy Hyslop for his sustained effort in the role over the past year in his term as Chief, especially for the commitment to helping the department transition to the new model of care suggested by the Medicine Review.

Dawn Mattinson is the new Man-ager for the Transitional Care Unit. Dawn is a Registered Nurse with over 25 years of nursing experience and a RVH employee for 14 years. During her time at RVH Dawn has worked as a Hospital Float in the Nursing Reserve Unit, a Respiratory Inpatient Staff Nurse, ADU Nurse Lead, Clinical Practice Champion, and her current Resource Nurse position.

Thank you to Charlie Kapty, 12-years-old, who collected re-turnable bottles this past summer, raising $990 for patient care at the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre. Dr. Sara Rask from the RVH Cancer Centre was thrilled to accept the donation.

Way to go Charlie!
