President’s Address

Dearest WorldMun Delegates,

For over 20 years, Harvard WorldMUN has provided an arena for students from all over the world to come together, exchange perspectives and discuss prominent global issues. In a world where human rights, security and the general well-being of individuals is too often compromised by conflict, famine and poverty, a united approach towards a common purpose is more important than ever. With a greater understanding of key issues and recognition of individual perspectives, this common approach can be made increasingly effective and, ultimately, successful. As leaders of tomorrow, delegates of WorldMUN strive towards these goals in a conference bolstered by authentic educational learning and great cultural diversity. The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon once said, “Let us acknowledge and celebrate what youth can do to build a safer, more just world. Let us strengthen our efforts to include young people in policies, programmes and decision making processes that benefit their futures and ours.”

As youth empowerment continues to rise on the United Nation’s agenda, we intend to capitalise on WorldMUN’s truly global reach by using it as a platform to address an issue of international importance: the Millennium Development Goals and the possibilities of further development post-2015. Although we are slowly moving towards the realisation of our goals, true global development requires dedicated and continued commitment. As a collective, we visualise a world where everyone is equal, and where we work together to provide one another with access to minimum standards of living.

It was this shared vision that initially inspired the Melbourne Host Directorate to place an application in order to secure the rights to the WorldMUN conference. Our success is reflective of the dedication; passion and competency of the students who helped make this dream a reality. Since winning the bid, a team consisting of 39 dedicated and passionate students has worked tirelessly to ensure our vision becomes a reality, while endeavoring to ensure that all opportunities for delegates beliefs and resolutions are heard by government and non government organizations.

While the new initiatives that the Melbourne Host Directorate are capitalising on will take WorldMUN 2013 to new heights, rest assured that the true spirit of WorldMUN will resonate in the beautiful city of Melbourne. The competitive academic experience will be accompanied by six unforgettable social events, the themes of which reflect Melbourne’s culture. Voted as the world’s most liveable city in 2012, second year running, Melbourne has rated perfect scores for infrastructure, healthcare and Education by the latest Economist Intelligence Unit Global Livability Survey. Enhancing the delegate experience is our primary objective and we will continue to work tirelessly to uphold this notion.

We hope that you are as excited as we are for the upcoming conference in 2013. As the President of the Melbourne Host Directorate, it is an honour for me to welcome every single one of you to Australia. Welcome to WorldMUN Melbourne 2013

About the WorldMUN Logo

Aboriginal heritage is an important part of Australian culture. Dating back more than 60,000 years, the historical importance of Indigenous traditions is of continuing significance, creating and maintaining links with the people and the land.

Respecting our ancestors who have passed their knowledge, arts, rituals and performances from one generation to another, speaking and teaching languages, protecting cultural materials, sacred and significant sites, and objects, the Host Team have settled on this design as our official logo.

From the two boomerangs that make up the ‘W’, the map-like dot patterns and strategically carved lines, the logo itself is a symbolic language.

Aboriginal Australians traditionally used art as a means of communication and expression, and their artwork was a manifestation of their beliefs, with some of the most well known Aboriginal stories, such as the Dreamtime or Dreaming stories, recording specific events that continue to be respected today. Whatever they drew, engraved or painted onto surfaces such as sand, earth, rock, trees or wood had significant meanings to them. Following this, the logo centred on Aboriginal art chosen for WorldMUN 2013, will become a rumination of WorldMUN, not only for 2013 but also the following years ahead.

Today, the Dreamtime is like the WorldMUN Spirit. The Dreamtime laid down the patterns of life for the Australian Aborigines, pervading and informing all spiritual and physical aspects of an indigenous Australian’s life. Keeping their fascinating culture alive with their stories and memories, the Dreamtime is a complex network of knowledge, faith, and practices that derive from stories of creation. Like the Dreamtime, the WorldMUN Spirit is not only present during the one week in March, but continues to grow and expand beyond the farewell, knowing no limits. The Spirit is preserved through storytelling, where delegates pass vital knowledge, perspectives and experiences onto one another as they come together for a common purpose. Just as the Dreamtime teaches us to care for the land and one another, the WorldMUN Spirit creates a story to be told beyond 2013, offering delegates with a glimpse of the outstanding diversity that exists amongst Melbourne’s people, animals and landforms.

The unification of boomerangs in our WorldMUN 2013 logo is closely connected to the belief in dreaming. Believed to be the first heavier-than- air flying machines, the boomerang is as old as the Dreamtime. To make a good returning boomerang requires experience in selecting the right branch of the tree, and patience and skill in shaping it to the desired curve and thickness. The Host Team believes that Melbourne embodies the perfect branch for use in the construction of a returning boomerang, that is, a WorldMUN that goes above and beyond expectations as it

provides delegates with unique and unforgettable experiences. With the assistance of the Harvard Secretariat, the Melbourne Host Directorate can utilise its expertise in carving the branch into a conference like no other, in a country like no other.

Though an unjust representation of the cultural diversity present in Melbourne, the rich vermillion red and grey palette used for the logo are representative of the values fostered by WorldMUN. Red, a stimulant and colour symbolic of conjuring a range of seemingly conflicting emotions from passionate love to violence and warfare, is simply synonymous with power. In some cultures, red denotes purity, joy and celebration. The colour of happiness and prosperity in China, worn by brides in the East, the colour of mourning in South Africa, red will be the signal that motions for delegates of WorldMUN 2013 to take action and embrace challenges diligently, whilst basking in the WorldMUN Spirit. The use of red in our logo not only grabs attention, but personifies the fast-paced nature of the Melbourne lifestyle. Combined with confidence and dashes of excitement, the red also represents the red earth of Australia, paying homage to the Aboriginal people’s spiritual connection with the land.

To balance the allure and alacrity of red, grey is used to remind delegates as to the significance of what they are doing. As the uniform of the corporate world, the grey exemplifies the austere determination of delegates during committee. Timeless, practical and solid, the sophistication invariably linked with the colour reflects the roles delegates will step into as the world’s leading diplomats with the knowledge of the topics of discussion within each committee. Just like the ability of grey to mix well with other colours, WorldMUN sees delegates unify through cooperation and friendships that lasts over a lifetime.

The logo, as an amalgamation of Aboriginal art, the boomerang and a pertinent colour scheme, engenders tradition, culture, respect, cooperation, and leadership. Not only does the design capture the WorldMUN Spirit, the WorldMUN 2013 logo remains significant to Australians, reminding them of the elements that make their country a treasure chest of culture and tradition.

This year at the World Model United Nations 2013, hosted in Melbourne, Australia, a change is coming.

In 2000, 189 nations, commenced the new millennium, with a promise to free people, from extreme poverty. By signing the Millenium Declaration, our governments have promised to reduce the factors that advance global inequalities. These factors have been transformed into reachable goals – the Millennium Development Goals(MDGs).

• Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger,• Achieving universal primary education,• Promoting gender equality and empowering women• Reducing child mortality rates,• Improving maternal health,• Combating HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases,• Ensuring environmental sustainability, and• Developing a global partnership for development

As 2015 quickly approaches, we are faced with a dilemma: where to from here?

What changes do you think the world needs to make

in order to eradicate extreme poverty and secure a sustainable future?

WorldMUN is a prime example of youth involvement over issues that matter to our generation. At WorldMUN 2013, committees will convene and deliberate over issues ranging from global conflict, environmental concerns and population growth, to historical interpretations of past events to be discussed in the present.

The resolutions and proposals that stand as the product of this week of debate will also come to represent the perspective of the global youth – the combined voice of over 2000 students from more than 60 countries from around the world.

It is our wish as the Host Directorate to ensure that the ideas proposed in these resolutions have a greater longevity than past conferences.

WorldMUN participants are eligible to apply for Australian visas as Visitors or Tourists. It is the responsibility of individual participants to obtain necessary visas prior to entering Australia. We recommend that passports are valid for at least 6 months before the date of expiry during your stay in Australia. Please ensure that you use the same passport to arrive and depart Australia.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship recommends that: • Applications for paper-based visas (Subclass 676 and Subclass e676) are lodged 6-8 weeks prior to your intended travel date to Australia• Applications for electronic visas eVisitor (Subclass 651), or ETA (Subclass 976) are lodged at least 2 weeks prior to your intended travel date to Australia. PROJECT C: OPERATION MAD

Putting together a fun and engaging newsletter that still had the ‘oomph’ of MUN was definitely not as easy as it seemed, as we in the Publications Team soon discovered!

From planning content to designing templates, everything has been done from scratch, purely as our own brainchild. Perhaps one of the most challenging and debated tasks overall was even choosing the name of the newsletter itself.

With so many things that ‘just don’t feel right’ we’re definitely very picky about what goes into our publication and what will be ultimately delivered to you. We’re absolutely determined that every issue of The Resolution will be as close to perfect as it can be, and are always thinking weeks ahead: keeping an eye out for bumps in the road or the perfect story to capture in our next feature article.

VolunteersCommittee Volunteers are the next generation of WorldMUN. They comprise of high school students from years 9-12 across Melbourne who are enthusiastic individuals which are keen to learn more about the issues which are being faced by the international community. Volunteers are an integral part of the conference as they will be largely assisting in facilitating communication between the delegates and the Secretariat within the committee sessions throughout the week.

Committee Volunteers bring a young, vibrant energy to the conference as they are at a stage in their lives where they are still discovering their passions, hopes and dreams for the future. For many Committee Volunteers, this will be their first MUN experience. Volunteers will be also able to assist delegates with any queries they may have about Melbourne as most of the Volunteers have grown up in Melbourne.

I am honoured to be leading the team of Committee Volunteers for the 22nd WorldMUN conference in Melbourne. They are bright, intelligent and most of all are being challenged through this conference to reinvent their world as the next generation who will continue the Spirit of WorldMUN in the many years to come.

Worst experience? During our second volunteers training session, Sam decided to have a miniMUN so everyone knew and understood the rules and procedures. I represented the state of Israel, and one of our debates was about the small arms trade. I said something controversial about illegal immigrants, to which Palestine rebutted quite convincingly.

Best experience? Meeting Melissa and her hair. Def a highlight

Favourite place in the world My favourite place in the world is Outer Mongolia. I’ve never been, but from what I’ve seen on google, it looks amazing and I would love to visit.

You’re stuck on an island. You can take 5 things. What are they?Just the essentials. Shampoo and Conditioner- what else could you possibly need?

You can eat one thing for the rest of your life. What is it? Rice. It tastes good

How do you spend your free time? Longboard- For those of you unaware of what this is, it’s a huge board that you go fast on.

Tattoos or Piercings? I’m getting a piercing.

Your favourite physical feature On me, my hair. On others, I love dark brown eyes.

One thing on your bucket list? Climbing Mount Everest. Because its high and I want to test my limits

Committee Volunteers are an integral part to the running of the conference. Committee Volunteers will be responsible in assisting Chairs and delegates with communication and document delivery within the committee sessions. This includes assisting Committee Chairs in running the conference programs, setting up the committee and communicating with the delegates and the Secretariat.

Prior and during conference, Volunteers will participate in workshops alongside personnel from Harvard, Monash and RMIT universities as well as listen to guest lectures by senior diplomatic figures form well-known institutions across the world, including the UN and the Australian Government.

Committee Volunteers will also be involved in the two biggest events held at the WorldMUN conference, the Opening and Closing ceremonies. Volunteers will be present alongside over 2000 delegates from over 65 countries as well as VIP guests from the corporate and public sector. Guest speakers at these ceremonies will potentially include personnel such as the Lord Mayor, the Prime Minister, as well as other senior Australian government and UN figures. Benefits of becoming involved:- Meet and network with over 2,200 student delegates from all around the world;- Observe committee debates discussing current international issues;- A chance to participate and put your debating skills to the test in Model United; Nations conferences prior to the actual conference; - Participate in an afternoon MUN session with members of the Host Directorate and Committee Chairs; and- Work alongside other enthusiastic and energetic Volunteers such as yourself! Logistical Interns are the faces of WorldMUN and are an integral part of providing all delegates with the ultimate Melbourne experience. These individuals are comprised of 100 hardworking university students that represent the vibrant and approachable nature of Australians. All logistical Interns come from Melbourne universities and live in Melbourne, which enables knowledge and familiarity of the city. They will be able to provide delegates with any information about Melbourne as a city, and the conference in general.

The Logistical Interns at WorldMUN Melbourne will enable not only a fun, smooth conference for all participating delegates, but will contribute to the unique and dynamic spirit of this year’s conference. They will offer an insight and introduction into the many hidden laneways of Melbourne, and showcase the splendour of our beautiful city.

It is with great pleasure to be part of this year Host Directorate and contribute to the unique WorldMUN spirit. I have been fortunate enough to experience WorldMUN conferences before and appreciate the originality each host city brings each year. I can honestly say that this year’s conference will be exceptional. Australians pride themselves in being friendly, approachable and fun, and that is exactly what the Interns and Volunteers represent this year. We have a dynamic team of young individuals that share the common ideology of a united and globalised world.

Hello everyone!

My name is Celia and I am an Intern Coordinator with the Head Office at

WorldMUN Melbourne 2013. I am stoked to be involved with WorldMUN 2013 and cannot wait to see and hear about all the different cultures, ideas

and knowledge that you will all bring before the conference.

Having recently graduated from the Class of 2012,

completing a Bachelor of Social Science (Policy and Research) at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology

(RMIT), I look forward to furthering my education through post grad studies. I have a passion for areas

of international development and relations, as well as policy making in local, national and international levels. I hope to be able to share with you wonderful delegates who I will meet in March, of the things I have a passion for and to learn and hear your story of what motivates

you, to strives you to make an impact.

In my spare time I love travelling, volunteering, baking, playing sports, hanging out with

friends and especially eating! Melbourne offers such an amazing range of cuisines

from all over the world, that sometimes when you’re in the right moment and

place it feels like you’re dining in a whole new country. I hope that you will also get

the chance to experience the amazing culture and life that Melbourne offers, and

I welcome you to our beautiful country!

Worst experience? Not so bad…but having to travel 1 and a half-hours to get to meetings can be tiring.

Best experience? I met this girl, Melissa, who has changed my life! Meeting new people and being challenged has been the best experience

Favourite place in the worldThe Great Ocean Road; A stretch of road along the south-eastern coast of Australia between Victorian cities of Torquay and Warrnambool. It’s a long drive with serene beaches, beautiful views, intriguing wildlife and the freshest air you will ever breathe in!

You’re stuck on an island. You can take 5 things. What are they?If I were to be stuck on an island id bring with me some rice (think smart!), fresh water, chocolate, Bear Grylls survival kit, a companion.

Favourite hangout place in MelbourneBrunetti at Lygon Street, I just love their amazing desserts and coffee and HuTong Dumpling Bar in Chinatown, their dumplings are just so good. Oh and Birrarung Marr Park by the Yarra River, next to Federation Square is also a lovely place to hang out.

You can eat one thing for the rest of your life. What is it?Chocolate. I am a confessed choc-a-holic.

How do you spend your free time?Reading, baking, sports, You-tubing !

Tattoos or Piercings?Piercings, wish they didn’t hurt so much though.

Your favourite physical featureMy hair, I’ve kept it long and have pride in it…ever since I was accidently given a boy’s haircut when I was 6 and was teased for it!

What attracted you to WorldMUN/Is this your first time participating in a MUN?The youth of today are tomorrow’s future and I know that we have the capability to make a change. The fact that WorldMUN encourages potential future leaders around the world to voice their ideas and allow each other to work towards a bright future is truly inspiring. This is my first MUN, and I am so looking forward to being involved with future coming WorldMUN’s!

What are you most looking forward to?I am looking forward to hearing about the debates, discussions and ideas that arise during the conference from each and every delegate!

If you could interview anyone from your life living or dead, who would it be and why?Mother Teresa, because she is a kind-hearted and inspiring person, ‘who gives but never takes’…this is a concept that I grew up with and will teach to my children.

Have you ever met anyone famous?The Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, The Attorney General of Australia Nicola Roxon, Australian soccer star Tim Cahill and Australian soccer team Socceroos and Matildas members.

Night-time hangouts in Melbourne you should know about are Cookie Rooftop Bar on Swanston Street, café shops along Lygon Street that open til late every night and Madame Brussels on Bourke Street!

My party trick is singing along to songs that I know…a bit too loudly.

Hello, my name is Leesa, and I am really excited to be involved in World MUN! I

study Psychology and International Politics at Monash University. I really enjoy my

study and I hope to one day work towards achieving the goal of Universal Education.

A bit about me, I absolutely love to travel! I spent 6 months travelling last year including 3 months living in Paris and can’t wait to do it again. Nevertheless, for now I am really

happy to meet people from all over the world and show them around Melbourne.

Apart from travelling, I have a huge weakness for books. I can’t walk into a

bookshop without buying something, which isn’t good on a student’s budget! I also

like taking pictures, Bollywood movies and exploring different cafes and cocktail bars in

Melbourne.

I hope that everyone enjoys their time Down Under and I am looking forward to meeting

you all in March!

Best experience? I know it sounds corny but just being involved is the best experience.

Favourite place in the worldIt’s hard to choose! The place I am most itching to go back to is India, such a different culture and so full of life. I also love Paris, which I consider my second home and can’t wait to go back and of course New York, which is just an amazing city with so much to see and do.

You’re stuck on an island. You can take 5 things. What are they?Pretty lame answer but I would take 5 books I think!

Favourite hangout place in MelbourneCaptains of Industry is great for a coffee! In the evening I love the atmosphere at Rue Bebelons with a nice glass of wine.

You can eat one thing for the rest of your life. What is it?Eggs!

How do you spend your free time?I like to keep myself pretty busy but I do enjoy catching up with friends, reading, cooking or going to the beach when I do have time.

Song you’re listening to.Right now I have been listening to the Whitlams a lot after seeing the lead singer do a Cabaret show before Christmas.

What attracted you to WorldMUN/Is this your first time participating in a MUN?This is my first time in WorldMUN, I think it’s a great opportunity for young people to come together and discuss World issues and I’m very happy to be a part of it

What are you most looking forward to?Meeting people with similar interests from all over the World

If you could interview anyone from your life living or dead, who would it be and why?That’s tricky! I think I would love to meet Simone de Beauvoir, but someone like Hitler or Mao would be fascinating too, just to meet someone who inspired such atrocities and try to understand why.

Have you ever met anyone famous? I met A. C. Grayling when he came to Melbourne last year and he bought me a copy of his book ‘Thinking of Answers’!

Night-time hangouts in Melbourne you should know about are a new not-for-profit bar opening in Melbourne called Shebeen (opening in February) which I think is a great concept and would be worth checking out!
