Young men and women are not passive beneficiaries, but equal and effective partners. Their aspirations extend far beyond jobs; youth also want a seat at the table — a real voice in shaping the policies that shape their lives. We need to listen to and engage with young people. We need to establish more and stronger mechanisms for youth participation. The time has come to integrate youth voices more meaningfully into decision-making processes at all levels.

The driving force WorldMUN Melbourne 2013 is a desire to ascertain the views of youth globally in relation to issues that impact the global community, and to promulgate those views within the international arena. Utilising our partnerships and networks, Melbourne 2013 is determined to ensure that the ideas and proposals produced by delegates have a greater impact after the conclusion of the debate.

WorldMUN is a vehicle for youth participation in global discourse, and represents an opportunity to integrate the views of youth into decision-making processes the world over. In 2013, delegates will descend upon Melbourne to discuss topics ranging from armed conflict to global development, and the resolutions produced have the capacity to engender the valuable perspectives of the global youth – the combined voice of over 2000 students from more than 80 different countries.

Youth participation has finally gained the recognition that it deserves, with world leaders acknowledging the importance of youth participation in global politics. The General Assembly, in A/RES/66/121, has recently stated that it

[r]ecognizes that young people in all countries are both a major human resource for development and key agents for social change, economic development and technological innovation …

It is our desire to promote the effective and meaningful participation of delegates in the decision-making process, and we have developed a number of partnerships, founded on a mutual desire to engage with young people, that will enable us to promote resolutions following the conclusion of the conference.

A number of resolutions will be sent to either the United Nations Economic and Social Commission of the Asia Pacific (UN ESCAP), or to the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). These resolutions will manifest the views of youth participants, and may be used to guide future policies and programmes.

One day we will inherit this world, and as its future leaders, we have the responsibility to shape its future. At WorldMUN 2013, the Resolutions with and Impact initiative will provide you with the opportunity to have your voice heard, to plan for the future, and to reinvent your world.

Recreate Your World: WorldMUN 2013 Youtube Competition

With the world as your audience, how will you recreate it? Calling all delegates! Are you excited for the upcoming WorldMUN Conference? With passions running high and your creative juices flowing, have you started what kind of impact you could make? Make your mark at the world’s largest student-led conference with the chance to be featured in WorldMUN videos, and even to be crowned as the winners of the 2013 WorldMUN Youtube Competition! This year, we will be choosing two outstanding submissions and winners will be presented with our amazing social event ticket packages*. Videos should address how you would ‘Recreate Your World’. Be as inventive and innovative as you like, as the individuality of submissions will be a major consideration for our judges. Whether it is as unique as interpretive dance, as astounding as your own musical composition, or as simple as an inspirational speech, everything and anything is both encouraged and welcomed! Your video is to be from two to three minutes in length and may be in your language of choice, but translations must be provided for it to be accepted. The competition closes on 10 March 2013 , so hurry and get filming! Please send all submissions to [email protected], with the email titled ‘Recreate Your World Submission: (Delegation Name Here)’. Please ensure all video files are saved as ‘(Your Delegation Name) – Video Application Submission’. Video quality of 720p (1080 x 720) or above will be accepted, which can be achieved by using most smart phones. Video files in the format of ‘.mov’, ‘.mp4� or ‘.avi’ will be accepted. A delegation may only enter once, and not all members of a delegation must appear in or be involved in the video.

*(Please note that this will be working by a system of reimbursement, so all entrants should still purchase tickets using the MyMUN system and winners will be reimbursed after the conference date).

The Social Events and The WorldMUN Spirit: Reinvent your nights!

WorldMUN is founded on the notion of the ‘Spirit of WorldMUN’, and is more than just an international conference which engages students in international politics and diplomacy. Simply, the Spirit of WorldMUN strives to achieve cooperation across borders and a deeper understanding of cultural perceptions beyond one’s own. The Social Events is a week-

long celebration which promotes cultural exchange among delegates from all walks of life. The events are an encapsulation of the WorldMUN Spirit, and are together, a journey into Melbourne’s story.

At a glance: Melbourne Culture and Nightlife Renowned for its young, eclectic community, Melbourne’s story begins with the Indigenous people of Australia – the traditional custodians of the lands, follows the prosperity of the gold rush, through to the creation of a dynamic and multicultural city from immigration.

Needless to say, Melbourne samples an electrifying variety of gourmet foods – Chinese, Italian,

Vietnamese, Greek, Thai, Japanese, Korean, Indian, Lebanese, Mexican and Turkish restaurants which are all located in the city centre. Quirky night markets and rooftop bars are littered across Melbourne in iconic lanes and mysterious alleyways, with people frequenting moonlit cinemas in some of Melbourne’s lush parks, and theatre goers delighting at city’s opulent variety of arts centres and theatres.

It is at night that the constant thrum of trams, cars and bustling city workers is replaced by the beguiling rhythm of music and laughter. We invite delegates to ‘walk the streets of Melbourne’, to dress for the Spring Racing Carnival, to explore Melbourne’s own Global Village, to re-live the history of the 1800’s Gold Rush, to deliver a cultural dance performance, to party ‘Into the Wild’ and to let loose at Schoolies, by joining us in the Social Events of WorldMUN 2013.

The Night Night Zero is your first tantalising taste of Melbourne’s electric nightlife and the beginning of the incredible week that is WorldMUN. Our welcome party is set to go off with a bang; so come break the ice, dress in your most outrageously glittering outfit, say g’day to your fellow delegates and share some drinks with the organising team.

The Venue Hosted at Crown Casino and Entertainment Complex, Fusion and Co nightclubs with have reverberating R‘n’B and House music flowing through the two nightclubs that open up into each other. There are five fully staffed bars and three excellent dance floors at your immediate disposal. After 11pm, this will be the only night you that you may meet some local Melbournians on their Sunday night partying adventures!

The NightGlobal Village is set to be an exotic, festive summer soiree, with live music, and delightful stalls manned by your fellow delegates with drinks, food and souvenirs from around the world to share. Prepare to discover an entire world in Melbourne’s own Global Village!

The VenueMelbourne WorldMUN’s Global Village is set right in the heart of the city, at the historic exercise courtyard of the Old Melbourne Gaol. The stunning courtyard is now a part of the central and picturesque RMIT University, just a short walk from the Melbourne Central train station. The vibe of Global Village this year will be very unique with this gorgeous outdoor location and a brilliant open air market atmosphere with a plethora of international goods.

Dalia AlkhunaiziWhat Social Event are you most looking forward to and why?I am actually excited for all social events! All the venues and entertainment that we have chosen are incredible! Every night has something special about it, and I am excited to meet all the delegates, and get to know a little bit more about their culture at both Global Village and Cabaret! I cannot wait to see what the delegates have planned for those two evenings! I am also super excited to see the creative costumes that everyone will be wearing (I’m especially looking forward for those who take it to the next level and make their own), and I am confident and very hopefuly that delegates will enjoy all of the nights, knowing all the hard work that we have put in to make those six nights unforgettable. Tips for a night out in Melbourne?To answer this question, I will have to reveal the secret to Melbourne to all of you! Melbourne has a unique nightlife, and to get the most out of it, you will have to put a little bit of effort and imagination because the best bars and night clubs you will find are in the most unusual places. Some will be in tiny alleys; some will be in old buildings or warehouses, some are at the docks, and even old gaols, hospitals or evacuated graveyards! But the best part is they offer something different! Do not just expect to be drinking to an old fashioned mijito! Do not just expect to be listening to your everyday ipod music! That’s right, it is nothing like you have seen before! So be ready to have the time of your life!

Working in the TeamI have been given the privilege to work with an incredible team – one that is very supportive and caring, and that is what I think has made our team successful. I feel that we have all grown together as colleagues, professionals, problem solvers, time managers, and event planners, but most importantly as long lasting friends, and a loving family. I am mainly responsible for the ‘Melbourne Spring Carnival’ night, but really, we have all worked together towards the goal of making all social events exceptional.

We have been all working really hard to make the six nights of the Social Events perfect for everyone! For the past seven months, the only phrases my friends outside of WorldMUN have heard from me is either “Sorry I’m busy working on WorldMUN” or “sorry I’m eating”! WorldMUN has become as important to me as food (and I absolutely love food)!

Kirby TaylorWhat Social Event are you most looking forward to and why?Definitely Global Village! Global Village is the first official night of the conference, where all delegates get to meet each other and share their respective cultures, food and drinks and show off their traditional attire. I cannot wait for this event! It is outdoors and is very Melbourne-esque. The venue is located in a beautiful, historical part of the city and we hope the entertainment we have chosen for the night will really set the mood.

Tips for a night out in Melbourne?Melbourne has so much to offer - there are lovely Night Markets all over the city, great gardens and parks, and areas like Sydney Road in Brunswick and Johnson Street in Fitzroy, with alternative bars that definitely spice things up! The Esplanade in St Kilda, Cherry Bar in ACDC Lane, the Evelyn Hotel in Fitzroy, and the Northcote Social Club in Northcote are also some of the best venues to is the place of the Melbourne live music scene.

Working in the TeamI help with the planning of Global Village as well as oversee the planning of other events with Irene Lu and the rest of our Social Events Team. The team all have our different attributes and all work really well together! We attend weekly Host Directorate meetings, have regular Social Events meetings, meet with our venue managers and send countless emails! I also look after all the Global Village applications so keep them coming!

Any other comments?We cannot wait to see everyone let loose at the Social Events of WorldMUN 2013 and have the best experience possible during their time in our beautiful city! From my trip to Vancouver in 2012, I have to say that attending the Social Events really adds to the overall WorldMUN experience! All our hard work will have paid off if we can see everyone having a great time at all of the awesome events we have planned! Don’t forget to plan early for your costumes!

Simonne CollinsWhat social event are you most looking forward to and why?Global Village is the night that I am looking forward to the most! It is set to be a fun night of trying different foods, mingling with each other, and cool entertainment in one of Melbourne’s most infamous venues, the exercise yard of the Old Melbourne Gaol! Tips for a night out in Melbourne?Live entertainment with friends is always a winner!

Working in the TeamI am the Social Events Intern Co-ordinator. As well as being the person organising the interns on the ground every night, I am assisting the SE team with organising the technical aspects for all events.The pre-conference hours for me have not been too consuming but during the week I will be setting up every-day, assisting in the evening briefs for Social Event Interns and overseeing the running of every event! 13

What social event are you most looking forward to and why?I am a little biased in this respect, but I have to say I am most looking forward to the Cabaret Evening! Not just because it is the event that I have been organising, but also because of the vibrant atmosphere that is going to be going around the venue! From the look of the applications so far, the performances are going to be fantastic! And if you haven’t applied – get onto it! It’s worth it – trust me! I am also looking forward to the Farewell Party mainly because it is a fantastic venue (so are the others!) and it will be a chance for everyone to really let their hair down without the worry of having a hangover for during Committee session the next day!

Tips for a night out in Melbourne?For a night out in Melbourne (or anywhere for that matter) I recommend to always take the essentials:- Comfortable shoes (no one wants to be in pain whilst partying- I speak from experience)- A camera (to capture all the great, and well, not so great memories from the night)- A fully charged mobile phone- A fantastic group of friends who are as keen to party as you- A fun, ready to party attitude!In terms of venues, I have spent some sensational nights at Perseverance (Friday night is 90’s night- and who doesn’t love the 90’s!) and highly recommend that as well as New Guernica because it is just an amazing venue!

Working in the TeamAs one of the Deputy Directors of Social Events, I have been assigned a specific night to organise as well as assisting with organising anything social events related! My night is Cabaret, which is shaping up to be a fantastic one! I am in love with our venue and I am sure you all will be too! I also am super excited to see what everyone comes up with to wear each night as the themes we have set are amazing! At first instance, one might think that our jobs on the team does not seem that hard (I know I did) but boy was I wrong! I have decided that WorldMUN is not so much an event but is more of a lifestyle. Once you are in it – you cannot get away from it! This can be exhausting at times but we have a fantastic Social Events team (not to mention an awesome Host Directorate Team) and I know by the end we’ll all be saying it was worth it! One thing I won’t miss though is finishing a 5 hour shift at work and having 85 messages from our team. It takes a good half hour to get through and I’ve never felt so popular! WorldMUN has given me a fantastic opportunity to work with people from an industry who you can learn so much from, and for this, I am very grateful to have had this exciting opportunity!

Tom HvalaWhat social event are you most looking forward to and why?I am so excited for the Hooroo: Farewell Party! There are so many exciting things happening that evening. The surprises planned for the night are going to be incredible and there exciting acts as well! We are currently sorting out all of the food and drinking options for delegates too. Located in one of Melbourne’s most unique and iconic venues, The Farwell Party will be such a great evening of laughs, music, friends and the most special memories. We will bet you have never partied in a setting like this before!

Tips for a night out in Melbourne?There are a lot of really nice places in Melbourne. It depends a lot on what you’re looking for. If you want to hit the d-floor, then you should head to New Guernica or Trak. But if you’re after something a little more downbeat, there are plenty of bars all over Melbourne. You’ve got Rooftop and Red Hummingbird right in the city. On Chapel St, there are plenty of places to explore too. One tip: Public transport tends to end around 1 or 2am, so bring a little spare cash for a cab ride if you plan on going large.

Working in the TeamI have loved being part of the Social Events Team and as a part of the Host Directorate. We have actually worked so hard and well together. Each of us has jumped right on board, committed ourselves to the task at hand. We have some of the most interesting and fun evenings coming up. Melbourne is such a lively place. You will have the opportunity to turn WorldMUN into one of the most memorable and enjoyable weeks you’ve ever had.

I’m a Deputy Director of Social Events. We work not only within the Social Events Team, but participate and assis in the whole WorldMUN preparation process and work closely with other ‘Offices’ within the host Directorate. With regards to the Social Events, I have had the opportunities to liaise with various prestigious organisations and individuals. It has been hard, but rewarding work; understanding all of the logistical concerns that go into just one evening of the six Social Event nights. More specifically, there are endless concerns regarding finance, logistics, safety, staffing and practicality. I’ve also had the opportunity to engage with a few of the other teams, assisting with marketing and helping the other teams in following up queries and concerns.

I am not sure exactly how many hours I work each day specifically for WorldMUN, but it certainly occupies a large chunk of my time each day – whether it’s pursing calls, shooting off emails, meeting with team members or contractors, or any of the other seemingly endless task of things to do within the Host Directorate!

POST-CONFERENCE TRIPS

MELBOURNE TO SYDNEY – 4 DAYS

Leaving from this great city, we’ll navigate the roads with the famous Melbourne trams and head for the most southerly point of the Australian mainland; Wilson’s Promontory. Here we take in a National Park of great natural beauty where kangaroos and emus live amongst the verdant green bushland, with the crashing waves not far away. We’ll take a hike up along the granite walkway to a nearby lookout, and take in the numerous scenic points. Our afternoon journey tracks us out to the edge of the Tasman Sea and to our overnight break on the Edge of the coastal Lakes.

After a hearty breakfast, we’ll travel across the Monaro plains and learn a little about Australia’s biggest ever engineering project, the Snowy Mountains Scheme. Then we are bound straight for the Nation’s Capital, Canberra. Architecturally designed from the ground up by Walter Burley Griffin, it’s awash with cool green spaces and grand boulevards. We’ll tour the iconic Parliament House set atop a slight incline, as well as the Australian War Memorial, even pass by a number of Foreign Embassies. Destined for the largest city in Australia we are welcomed by the busy city streets of Sydney.

Our morning drive northbound heads up through the magnificent Snowy River region; get a taste for a mountain lifestyle before we cross borders into New South Wales. Our evening destination is placed right in the heart of the Australia’s Snowy Mountains. We may be high up already, but later today we’re going even higher – Mt Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest peak at 2,228 metres above sea level. Don’t be put off: it’s a relatively moderate hike from the top of the Crackenback Express chairlift, or you can take the shorter walk to the lookout point.

GREAT OCEAN ROAD – 3 DAYS

Meet your guide and start your journey towards one of the most spectacular scenic drives in the world, the Great Ocean Road.

We travel west through Victoria’s second largest city Geelong and the rural township of Colac, before heading south towards the iconic Great Ocean Road. First stop is Bells Beach one of Australia’s most famous surf beaches and home to the Rip Curl Surfing Pro. Enjoy the stunning coastal views and feel sand between your toes before continuing on to the coastal townships of Lorne where we stay overnight.

The evening is at leisure to explore this coastal paradise.

After breakfast depart along the Great Ocean Road and travel through Apollo Bay. Along the way there is plenty of opportunity to spot the native wildlife as the region is home to plenty of koalas and kangaroos as well as a variety of birds. We visit Cape Otway Lighthouse, mainland Australia’s oldest surviving lighthouse and learn about the fascinating history of the traditional owners, the Gadabanud peoples. Exclusive entry into the lighthouse, see breathtaking views over the Southern Ocean. Enjoy your Aussie BBQ lunch.

From here we continue on to the Port Campbell National and its world renowned limestone rock formations.

Stop at the 12 Apostles, magnificent rock stacks that rise up majestically from the Southern Ocean on Victoria’s dramatic coastline. Created by constant erosion of the limestone cliffs of the mainland beginning 10-20 million years ago, the stormy Southern Ocean and blasting winds gradually eroded the softer limestone, forming caves in the cliffs. The caves eventually became arches and when they collapsed rock stacks up to 45 metres high were left isolated from the shore. We visit Loch Ard Gorge, named after the famous Loch Ard Shipwreck, which saw the loss of 52 lives on one fateful night in June 1878. Only two people survived, and swam to the safety of the small beach inside the now named Loch Ard Gorge. The Loch Ard precinct is where you will also find a number of other well known locations, such as the Razorback, the Island Arch, Muttonbird Island, Loch Ard Cemetery, the Blowhole and the Thunder Cave.

Welcome to Cairns and “tropical paradise”. Meet and greet upon arrival and transfer to your centrally located hotel.

What better way to wrap things up than with a day of leisure in beautiful Cairns. Today is the perfect chance to go wild with optional activities and day trips, from white water rafting* on the Tully River to a full day tour* of the World Heritage listed Daintree region. Michaelmas Cay National Park is a world-famous bird sanctuary with a beautiful sandy beach, providing a rare opportunity to snorkel and dive straight off the edge in calm, protected waters. Sea turtles are abundant here and you’re likely to see giant trevally, small black tip reef sharks, bat fish and hundreds of colourful species too! Paradise Reef is an exclusive mooring just for us, so there are no crowds as you snorkel the hard coral reef with depths of up to 25 metres along the edge. Café Latte: The most commonly ordered coffee from an espresso machine, café latte means “coffee milk” in Italian, which is exactly what you’ll get! A latte is just espresso coffee with steamed milk. Many Melbournians take theirs with soy, especially around Fitzroy or Brunswick!

Cappuccino: In the past, if you ordered a cappuccino you could expect a coffee with cream and cinnamon or chocolate on top and in fact, some European cities still serve them this way. In Melbourne

however, if you order a cappuccino you can expect to get something a bit like a cafe latte, but with a bit more of that yummy froth and some chocolate sprinkled on top.

Melbournians are crazy about their coffee, so here are some tips to blend in and order coffee like a local!

Espresso Originating in Italy in the nineteenth century, espresso coffee is the most common coffee people drink in Melbourne. Espresso coffee is made using an espresso machine. This process involves pushing very hot and high-pressure water through very finely ground coffee, which results in thick coffee with a bitter taste that is often had with milk. The variations are as follows:

MELBOURNE COFFEE CULTURE

Short/Long Macchiato: Macchiato is Italian for ‘stained’ and that’s what this coffee is. An espresso shot ‘stained’ with a bit of frothed milk. A long macchiato is a Melbourne creation, which has 2 shots of espresso instead of one and some frothed milk.

Filter Becoming increasingly popular in Melbourne is Filter coffee. Bringing out the more delicate flavours, filter coffee is made in various different ways and is a much milder taste. You won’t find these at all cafes but if you see the option definitely have a taste!

Pour over: This is the most delicate way to make coffee. Using a cone with a filter, you pour the hot water slowly through to get a gentle coffee. This is the best way to get out the subtle flavours in the coffee – and my personal favourite!

Siphon: This is a very complicated process that you won’t find in too many places. Siphon coffee is made by placing water in a beaker over a flame with the coffee on top over a filter. The heat pushes the water up as steam, when the water on top cools it filters back into the bottom beaker with the coffee, leaving the sediment on top.

Aeropress: The Aeropress is a slightly stronger coffee, made by immersing the coffee in water and then slowly putting pressure on the coffee through a filter. This is quite similar to the French Press style, the main difference being in the strength of the filter. For Aeropress it is very fine, which gets rid of more impurities.

Flat White: Another coffee with milk, a flat white is a drink for no-nonsense people. Made like a café latte but with less froth on top.

Short Black: Also sometimes simply called ‘espresso’, this is 30mLs of pure espresso coffee!! This is a coffee that will put hairs on your chest, especially good for a quick coffee.

Iced Coffee: You will find many variations on this but in a nutshell, an iced coffee is like a cold cafe latte, with a bit more milk! Some places choose to serve theirs with ice cream or cream, making it a lovely sweet summer drink!

Cold Drip: Very popular in summer, the cold drip can take up to 22 hours to make! It is brewed in cold/room temperature water, which makes it a sweeter coffee. It is often served in a little bottle and is great on a hot day.

Cold Filter: Another cold, black coffee, the cold filter is made hot using the filter method and then chilled overnight. Works particularly well with beans from Kenya.

Espresso Martini: In the afternoon you may want to finish your day with an espresso martini! These are very popular in Melbourne, made with various types of alcohol, which can include Vodka, Tequila, Kahlua and more! A great way to start a night out!

I’ve been following your newsletter ever since its release on January 11, and I cannot commend you all enough on the efforts that have been poured into a publication that emulates the Vogue of the MUN circuit. Having only heard about MUNs in high school, The Resolution truly encapsulates the uniqueness of WorldMUN, and is a testament to the fact that it is ‘superior to any other university program in the world’ (as so fittingly described by the Times (UK)).

The transcendent photography throughout each edition, especially within your Trips and Tours coverage, took me on a dream vacation around Australia (without the hassle of airport security!). However, the focus on the beautiful city of Melbourne really validates it as Australia’s most vivid charm. The state of Victoria has a subtle beauty and complexity about it that is not always understood by those unwilling to travel beyond the CBD to the natural coastline splendors that bestow life’s greatest pleasures of food, wine and natural beauty.

I wish I had come across WorldMUN as a student, and I encourage everyone that descends upon Melbourne this March to explore Victoria and all of its hidden charms. It truly is a cultural hub - a treasure chest for all.

Each young leader attending WorldMUN has the capacity to begin changing the world today. WorldMUN provides one of the best educational, networking, and skill-building experiences available to university students, and through our partnership with The Resolution Project, we also offer a pathway to action today.

The Resolution Project, founded by WorldMUN alumni, is a global non-profit fostering youth leadership development through collaborative social entrepreneurship for college students like you. As you prepare for WorldMUN, you are encouraged to participate in The Resolution Project’s Annual Social Venture Challenge. I am Shan Bannirchelvam and I am a Resolution Fellow, passionate about the role that the private sector plays in advancing development. I am currently studying Law and Economics at the University of Sydney. It is the serving of the world by bringing together people, resources, and technology that motivates my work in Global Health Solutions. I have been fortunate enough to be supported by Sam Baker, Mia Kennett, Sam Loni, Tim Udorovic, Lisa Fowler, Merry Hoang, Jennifer Lam, Aviva Pinskier, and Sarah O’Brien who have played a vital role in establishing Global Health Solutions at the Harvard WorldMUN in Singapore in 2010, amongst many others.

Global Health Solutions’ mission is to utilise the technology of today to find innovative and efficient solutions to public health challenges. We were inspired by the role that the crowd-mapping software Ushahidi played in Haiti, being used by the US Marine Corps as well as other Humanitarian Aid Agencies, to aid in their planning. We gained confidence from the example set by Home2Health, a previous resolution project venture that used mobile phones to enhance public health in Uganda. We have a firm conviction that combining this technology with other platforms such as frontline SMS could play a valuable role in addressing public health challenges, starting with Australia, particularly targeting the significant gaps in health within Indigenous communities.

Our immediate focus is on collaborating with One Disease at a Time (“1D”), an established NGO with a presence in the Northern Territory which aims to eradicate scabies from

Australia. Scabies can impair an Indigenous child’s ability to participate in family and community life or attaining the necessary education for a better future. There are also causal links between scabies and childhood malnutrition, pneumonia, and other infectious disease, impairing a child’s ability to grow to become a healthy, productive adult.

1D has established relationships with the NT Department of Health, as well as with existing programs within Indigenous communities, gaining valuable insights on organisational development. Learning from them allows us to streamline our learning curve, and use both our resources more efficiently through synergies. They were looking to develop both social media and online platforms for their program to eradicate scabies: this was a perfect fit with our capabilities, and thus we were able to develop a mutually beneficial relationship.

We have been fortunate to be mentored by Dr. Laura Vickers, Michael De Guzman, and Matthew Saunders from the Resolution Project. Their diverse backgrounds, ranging from Medicine, to Law and even to the field of Finance, makes their advice invaluable in achieving our goals. By drawing on their collective experience, we learn to think laterally and comprehensively about our venture and develop realistic action plans.

As a Resolution Fellow, I am always humbled by the breadth of talent, achievement, and innovation of other Resolution Fellows within the network and the amazing goals they strive to achieve. The Resolution Project has taught me that where there is a will there is always a way, and to ultimately always reach beyond my grasp, because I’ll get there.

Introducing Play Forward

At Play Forward, we use sport as a vehicle to build confidence and self- esteem amongst disengaged and marginalised Australian children. We aim to impact children such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, whose school completion rates are well below the completion rates for other students.

Play Forward programs allow young people to have fun playing sports, form relationships with their peers and mentors, learn positive life lessons and build healthy habits!

Play Forward collects and redistributes pre-loved sporting equipment to kids in need, and aims to provide free and voluntary sports based programs that teach integral life skills. The sports based youth development programs use sports as a vehicle to promote self-esteem, leadership and cooperation in a welcoming environment.

The Play Forward Sporting Chance Fund has also been established to provide opportunities for disadvantaged youth to participate in organised, weekly sporting activities. Participants can choose a sport to participate in. The Sporting Chance Fund ensures that all barriers are removed, for their participation.

The Resolution Project has provided us with necessary support and funding to get our project off the ground. We have had invaluable advice from our mentors, along with ongoing marketing and branding assistance from Group 113. Vanessa Picker

Young South Australian of the Year, Vanessa Picker is an entrepreneur with many innovative not for profit and social ventures to her name. She has a diverse background, as she has time in the Royal Australian Air Force, completed a Degree in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Adelaide and travelled the world facilitating various conferences and Summits. Vanessa has also played elite level sport from a young age, meaning that she recognises the important role which sport can play in personal development.

Leah Costanzo

Leah Costanzo is currently working towards a double degree in Law and Commerce at the University of Adelaide, majoring in management. She has always been passionate about human rights, as exemplified by her involvement in various clubs such as Amnesty International. Whilst being involved in these clubs, she has helped to raise funds and awareness for pressing social issues. Leah is very passionate about the fundamental goal of Play Forward; enhancing the rights of impoverished and disadvantaged children. Whilst living in Cairns in Far North

Queensland, she witnessed the inequality and constant degradation of human rights, especially in young aboriginal children. In 2009, Nick Fiore and Alex Merkovic launched IT Empowerment in Rwanda. Rwanda is a country with a burgeoning IT sector, but an over-concentration of IT education and jobs in urban centers has led to lost opportunities for over eighty-percent of the population.

Using an existing Internet connection and by partnering with local schools in the rural community of Byimana, the project created a computer lab with free IT training to educate the community on technological applications. Overcoming issues of location and subscription pricing, the lab has now hired its first full-time IT instructor and launched a successful curriculum for local students.

Impact

The Resolution Fellowship has opened up incredible opportunities for personal and professional growth for Nick. The initial mentorship he and Alex received to launch their IT Empowerment venture was invaluable. The conversations Resolution facilitated with industry leaders and management experts to critically evaluate every stage of the design and implementation of their project honed their skills and focus during the project phase of the Fellowship. After completing the project launch, Resolution’s team of accomplished mentors, supportive staff, and growing network of Fellows continues to provide a unique support web. This long-term mentorship, support, and feedback is a unique strength of the Resolution Fellowship and Nick is excited to move into a mentor role with new Fellows as a Resolution Guide this year.

Nick FioreNick is a Lecturer at Florida State University and Lasell College where he designs online learning platforms and teaches international development and sociology courses. He recently finished a book chapter on the social impact of IT for education in Bhutan. He holds a BA in International Affairs from Florida State University and an MSc in Social Policy and Development from the London School of Economics.

PATRON OF CONFERENCE GARETH EVANS

The Honourable Gareth Evans is the Patron of the World Model United Nations, Melbourne 2013 conference; his achievements and accomplishments have inspired Australia, including many of the student volunteers working to organise this conference. His support for our cause is truly invaluable and it is an honour for us to have him as the Patron of the WorldMUN 2013 conference. The Honourable Gareth Evans was the former Foreign Minister of Australia, the current Chancellor of the Australian National University, and President Emeritus of the International Crisis Group. He has co-chaired two major International Commissions – on Intervention and State Sovereignty (2000-01) and Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (2008-10) – and is now Chair of the International Advisory Board of the Centre for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament and Cochair of the International Advisory Board of the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect.

He was a member of the of the UN Secretary - General’s High Level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change; the Commission on Weapons of Mass

Destruction; the International Task Force on Global Public Goods, and the Commission of Eminent Persons on The Role of the IAEA to 2020 and Beyond. He had previously served as a member of the Carnegie Commission on Preventing Deadly Conflict, and is currently a member of the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Committee on Genocide.

He holds first class honours degrees in Law from Melbourne University (BA, LLB (Hons)) and in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University (MA), and subsequently became a Queens Counsel (QC) in 1983. He was a member of the Australian Parliament for 21 years, holding Cabinet positions such as Attorney-General, Minister for Resources and Energy, Minister for Transport and Communications and most prominently, Foreign Minister. He is best known internationally for his roles in developing the UN peace plan for Cambodia, bringing to a conclusion the international Chemical Weapons Convention, founding the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum and ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), and initiating the Canberra Commission on the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.Gareth Evans was made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2012 for “eminent service to international relations, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, as an adviser to governments on global policy matters, to conflict prevention and resolution, and to arms control and disarmament.”

In 2011 Foreign Policy cited him as one of the Top 100 Global Thinkers for making ‘the responsibility to protect’ more than academic”. In 2010 he was awarded the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute Four Freedoms Award for Freedom from Fear, for his pioneering work on the Responsibility to Protect concept and more. He was the 1990 Australian Humanist of the Year, the recipient of the ANZAC Peace Prize in 1994, made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2001, and was awarded Honorary Doctorates of Laws by Melbourne University in 2002, Among other current positions, Gareth Evans is a member of the Global Leadership Foundation; Aspen Atlantic Group; Supervisory Council of the International Luxembourg Forum on Preventing Nuclear Catastrophe; the International Council of the Asia Society; Advisory Council of the Independent Diplomat; International Advisory Board of the Asia-Pacific College of Diplomacy, Australian National University; jury of the Nuremberg International Human Rights Award; and a Fellow of the Foreign Policy Association. FAMINE IN EAST AFRICA REQUIRES GREATER INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE, ACCORDING TO UN

MELBOURNE – A meeting of the United Nation’s Environmental Programme (UNEP) on Sunday passed a resolution calling for greater long-term international response in order to address and curb the root consequences of drought ravaging East Africa. This drought has consequentially lead to a severe famine affecting many countries in the region; particularly Somalia, which discussion revolved around on during Sunday’s meeting. During the meeting, the Somalian delegation alleged that droughts, floods and famine demonstrate the long term risk posed to the planet from climate change.

Early debate during the meeting centered around peripheral issues in the region including security issues, and many Western nations were leery to commit military forces or any other forms of support to the region; fearful of the presence of the Al-Shabaab militant group. Formally recognised last year, Al-Shabaab claims to possess large areas of territory in the South of Somalia, and have vowed to impose strict Sharia law in the region, as well as fiercely vowing to combat any Western intervention into the region.

The debate began to find more traction during the latter half of the day, with debate being recontextualised in order to focus upon the provision of technology and information to farmers in this region, with widespread consensus that famine was an artificial phenomenon.

However, a vigorous rebuttal of early working papers came from an unexpected source, with the Zimbabwean delegation launching a scathing attack of the working papers and draft resolution being made:

“Who is going to fund it? Which members are going to fund it? Who will oversee the program? Green energy isn’t necessary, [we need to] focus more on short term and current solutions, it is a fact that green companies that are already running.”

Zimbabwe’s criticism resulted in significant reshaping of the working paper, yet despite these many apparent flaws in the document, Togo’s draft resolution, introduced to the floor during the afternoon of the committee’s meeting was passed after amendments to clauses concerning the specificity of the resolution failed. The resolution in its final form makes provisions to provide myriad support to embattled farmers in the region including the provision of technology, information and financial exchanges from Western nations in the near and long term future.

Nerves gave way to optimism and anticipation, as chairs echoed each other’s wishes for an additional practice session to tackle areas for improvement that they identified. By the time the meeting was suspended for lunch at the Mini-MUN on Sunday 17th of February, both chairs and delegates appeared noticeably confident. They were so at ease “in character” that they had a seamless transition in resuming their roles after relaxed exchanges as individuals, compared to the choppier affairs of the morning.

On level six, all eyes were on East Africa. As a humanitarian crisis impacting shipping routes and terrorism, the topic of famine in this region attracted suggestions from all corners of the world. The United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) was established in 1972 to encourage partnership in caring for the human environment, on occasion acting as an implementing agency for trust funds.

Troubled Somalia repeatedly expressed frustration at the lack of concrete guarantees to substantiate the noble rhetoric filling the room. Its delegate solicited military support in defending against infiltrates and pirates, as well as agricultural aid, citing not only moral imperatives to alleviate human suffering but also a special burden to be shouldered by the western powers to rectify the consequences of colonialism. Questions lingered as to whether emerging powers like China— developing countries themselves but exploiting

resources abroad— were subject to similar obligations.

The discussion often touched upon related topics such as climate change and relationships with NGOs. Representatives grappled with the vicious cycle of political instability hindering the ability to cope with ecological threats—the epitome being droughts potentially leading to famine— which in turn debilitates society. Discourse revolved around decoupling emergency relief and national security (to be addressed by the General Assembly and the Security Council, respectively) from longer-term solutions within the scope of this programme, including investment and resource management.

“In 2000, world leaders pledged to halve extreme poverty by 2015, through an initiative outlined in the MDGs.”Progress was remarkable, particularly in the second half of the afternoon. Amending as necessary, the floor successfully passed a resolution promising cooperation, financially and otherwise, under the leadership of the African Union. With emphasis on accountability and infrastructure, the distribution of crop seeds, green energy solutions, and agricultural training would be overseen by existing UN bodies. The First General Assembly wrestled with dilemmas of trust

over the need to establish an independent authority to regulate arms proliferation in space. Laws governing technology are notoriously tricky to navigate, not to mention in a field like this that is riddled with secrecy regarding specialised military and civilian uses. Updating the definitions and terminology from the 1967 Outer Space Treaty to encompass surveillance, for instance, was a start.

In ensuring transparency through a neutral body beyond the power of nation-states, anger was voiced toward space powers such as China and Russia resisting collective control. Maintaining decorum tended to take the back seat in the struggle to move forward, which was to some degree a universal problem. Chairs are responsible for directing attention to the speaker and policing personal pronouns so that the floor does not descend into hysterics and distractions.

The Second General Assembly faced two opposing working papers. One relied on the self-regulation of tax havens by each country. Proponents, among them China, Burma and Switzerland, painted the expansion of international bureaucracy as ineffective, a threat to privacy and a waste of funds. This position attracted ample criticism as merely preserving the status quo of inaction on an issue that transcends borders by definition. In contrast, Sweden, Australia and Canada pushed for the lowering of corporate taxes and the enforcement of fines that would cancel any potential gain through tax evasion.

The scheme would give the OECD greater international jurisdiction, in conjunction with Interpol. Amnesties designed to temporarily alleviate the effects of lost tax revenue would collect information to be utilized for exposing offshore accounts. Concerns were raised about impediments to commercial activity and state sovereignty, but countries were keen to step up to the challenge given that creative accounting and money laundering are typically connected to broader criminal activities.

At the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), France introduced a scheme to balance human rights and counter-terrorism efforts by endorsing responses tailored to local needs and strengthening the capabilities of the ICJ and the existing taskforce. Current treaties dealing with myriad issues separately have proved insufficient to protect human security in the post-9/11 paradigm. Debate centered on the feasibility of a comprehensive instrument to adequately cover prominent issues including, but not limited to, the treatment of detainees and asylum seekers, due process, racial profiling, redirection of funds, and freedom of speech.

Delegates at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) stayed put in their seats during unmoderated caucus, and the general speakers’ list was repeatedly exhausted without anything to vote on. As in other committees, chairs resorted to calling on silent member states. In particular

member states. In particular with the awards at stake, it would behoove participants to keep in mind that there are diverse ways of contribution, the most vocal not necessarily being the most valuable. At the actual conference unfolding over several days, some will be consensus builders, while others will be active in informal settings.

Eventually, the pace picked up and the group was able to list specifics in its second working paper by using the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as a springboard. Opinion was still divided over the limitation of previous objectives, which ones to maintain, and what to add. Especially contentious were measures in respect to the gender gap and population growth, or more precisely, the practicality of a new framework imposing deadlines to meet requirements on such sensitive topics. There was agreement on one point, that trade regimes and sustainability would become key concepts in the future.

In 2000, world leaders pledged to halve extreme poverty by 2015, through an initiative outlined in the MDGs. Results are notable, albeit uneven among the categories. Moreover, even

wealthy societies are confronted by disparity in wealth and civil rights violations. With the time limit looming on the horizon, a multitude of proposals are taking shape alongside that of the 2013 Harvard WorldMUN, which has selected the MDGs as its first overarching theme in its 22-year history. The day after the Mini-MUN, for example, The

Global Thematic Consultation on Addressing Inequalities in the post-2015 Development Agenda, led by UNICEF and UN Women, live-streamed their Public Dialogue Day, in which a panel answered questions sent by the public via the Internet. Such initiatives highlight again the significance of bridging the digital divide, covered by the UNDP in its mandate under the ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council).

Considering this was the first time for many chairs to assume their duties, and that delegates had limited time to prepare, this was a visibly valuable learning experience. Furthermore, there is no doubt that those at the convention center in March will have researched and cemented an informed strategy, for even with concessions and alliances, detailed knowledge and a sense

of direction is crucial for accurate decisions.

For some ideas, context is more important than abstract theory, the rules of procedure being a prime example. Chairs became familiarised with the process as they found themselves in uncertain scenarios they had never imagined, and thinking it through honed their skills. Not only did they receive guidance from the host directorate, but they also supported one another and gave explanations to delegates. Such interaction is the best way to grow, which is one of the fundamental foci of this event itself.

G’day! I sit here from my office in Los Angeles envious at those who will be arriving in Melbourne, Australia in about a month for the WorldMUN 2013 conference. As a global observer of Model UN conferences in my role writing for the Model UN website BestDelegate.com, the analogy I usually hear is that WorldMUN is like the “Olympics of Model UN.” I suspect that the characteristics of having a bidding process and rotating sites make that analogy valid, but I think WorldMUN offers a unique experience that it can be described without an analogy. Those who have been to WorldMUN

can attest that the spirit of WorldMUN runs deep inside and outside of committee to create a truly unique Model UN experience.

Inside of committee, WorldMUN can be distinguished by two qualities: the diplomatic nature of its committee sessions and the international makeup of its delegates. WorldMUN truly emphasizes the diplomatic side of Model UN and recognize success accordingly which leads to a healthier and more productive committee experience for the delegates. And WorldMUN is one of the most diverse Model UN conferences available with students from literally around the world, giving delegates

an opportunity to really broaden their perspectives and meet new friends. Both the diplomatic and international nature of the committee experience is what will create the bonds between these future leaders after the conference has concluded.

Outside of committee, WorldMUN always does a great job with its in-conference social events, including a very appropriate Global Village that makes the most out of the international diversity

present. Learning about different countries also occurs outside of committee, and WorldMUN always makes sure to schedule a variety of trips and tours that enable delegates to know the city and country better. All of this creates a fun, enjoyable, and memorable shared experience among the delegates that will strengthen the bonds developed within committee. Most recently, Taipei, Singapore, and

Vancouver all set high standards for excellence and we’re excited to see what Melbourne has in store.

Finally, I wanted to get some perspective from someone who has attended multiple WorldMUN conferences in the past and someone who is about to attend WorldMUN this year for their thoughts.

I asked Sabrina Ostrowski, a Best Delegate Media Associate from McGill University in Canada who

attended WorldMUN in Taipei and Singapore as part of the Marianopolis College delegation, to reflect on her experience and here’s what she said: “WorldMUN is the kind of conference you cannot compare to the rest of the circuit. The delegates it attracts and the experience it delivers is so far unmatched in my books. Although many value it for its international experience in that it provides the

discovery of a foreign country, WorldMUN’s actual Model UN content is not to be overlooked. Spending two consecutive years as one of 300+ DISEC delegates, it was one of my best committee experiences. The perspectives provided by our international counterparts make for a wholesome debate, much more representative of the actual UN. Of course exploring new corners of the world is the conference’s main charm, yet I’m sure all would agree that friendships formed there have no equivalent, amidst the geographical and cultural distances. Every hard core MUNer needs to experience WorldMUN. Your journey on the circuit would not be complete without it.”

I also asked Amy O’Halloran, a Best Delegate Media Associate from George Washington University in the WorldMUN Melbourne 2013 and here’s what she said: “As someone who grew up participating in international MUN, I am enthralled at the opportunity to attend WorldMUN 2013 in Melbourne. Aside from the fact that this conference

is taking place in such a beautiful city in the world, I am most excited to participate in a conference that places emphasis on cooperation as opposed to competition. This will allow us delegates to forge better personal connections with the people both in our committees and outside them, something that doesn’t always happen when Model UN is a competition. Additionally, WorldMUN is social diplomacy at its finest, something again that I am thrilled to be a part of. Returning to international MUN, as well as being surrounded by thousands of young people in a foreign city, is the ultimate prize package for me and I cannot wait for the conference!”

In the First General Assembly, various countries went at loggerheads throughout the morning over a plethora of issues. As the day progressed everyone began to chip in, with the General Speakers List growing longer and longer as those involved in discussions began to fully comprehend what debating arms proliferation in outer space really entailed.

The successful running of the MiniMUN has left everyone in high hopes for the Conference itself! It was no easy feat organising hundreds of people into rooms for hours of intense debates, let alone finding rooms to book or setting up the appropriate systems, but the Office of Staff did a commendable job in getting things done. While you might not have had the treat of being there, we can assure all delegates you will definitely have a lot to look forward to in March!

Last Sunday, the complete Melbourne Host Directorate including Executives, Seniors, Deputies, Coordinators, Interns, Volunteers and Interns gathered for the first time together to battle it out in the highly anticipated MiniMUN. With four different committees, the Chairs were given the chance to try their hand at professionally chairing Committee Sessions, testing out systems and putting all the rules and guidelines they had learnt to good use.

This year will be the first time an independent Press Corps will be created. Our journalists will produce content as correspondents of five news agencies including the New York Times, Al-Jazeera, Agence-France Presse, The Australian and The Times of India . You can look forward to social media updates, daily newsletters and video clips, as well as a keepsake gazette when the conference draws to a close. We will not only be disseminating crucial information so that you are up to date with the progress of other Committees, but will also endeavour to function as the Fourth Estate by providing alternative perspectives and critiquing procedures where appropriate. Hi everyone,

My name is Jon Grossman and I’m an external advisor at WorldMUN 2013, so you will likely see me running between various committees throughout the week.

I’m currently at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) starting my third year of a Bachelor of International Studies. And I will be heading off midway through the year for exchange to Cornell University for a year.

Travelling has always been a big part of me from the day I was born. My mum is Zimbabwean while my dad is Hungarian and I was born here. However with lineage like that I was never going to stay around long and I grew up all over the place living in Australia, Zimbabwe, Hungary and England. For this reason international relations and MUN seemed like a logical choice for me. I first got involved in MUN in high school and have only gotten more involved as university has progressed. Some conference highlights for me would definitely have to be GMUN in Incheon in 2011 and NMUN New York last year. WorldMUN will be my 7th university level conference. I also served as secretary of the UNSW UN Society last year, so MUN has definitely been intrinsic to my degree so far.

Away from MUN I love travelling and learning languages as well as watching sports and reminiscing what might have been if I had any semblance of athletic ability. Like anyone I like to spend time with friends, going out for food and drinks.

I can’t wait to meet you all in March and to showcase all that Australia has to offer at WorldMUN 2013!

Worst experience?To be honest there really haven’t been any bad experiences so far. My trousers tore at one of the training sessions which was pretty embarrassing, so I guess that would have to be the worst experience.

Best experience?My best MUN experience in general would have to be last year at NMUN in New York I got to give a speech at the ECOSOC Hall. It felt pretty cool speaking and watching myself on various TV screens throughout the room.

Favourite place in the worldIt has to be Manhattan, there’s very little that you could want that you can’t find on that island.

You’re stuck on an island. You can take 5 things. What are they?I’m too dependent on technology not to make my laptop the first thing I take (this island has wifi right?). Next I’d have to bring a friend, as much as I like my own company I think I’d go insane being there alone. Food and drink supplies would have to be next, as I’d prefer not to starve. And finally I’d bring a boat to get us off the island when we’re finally ready to head back to civilisation.

You can eat one thing for the rest of your life. What is it?You can’t beat a good steak.

How do you spend your free time?What free time? Every spare minute is devoted to ensuring everyone has the best possible experience at WorldMUN 2013.

Tattoos or Piercings?JI use to have my eyebrows pierced and still have a scar from that.

Your favourite physical featureOn me? I get compliments on my hair, it being called “flippy” is a compliment right?

What attracted you to WorldMUN/Is this your first time participating in a MUN?Siamak Loni. He’s an excellent negotiator and when he approached me at AMUNC earlier this year about getting involved with the Host Team I was right on board. I’ve been a director and a delegate at previous conferences but I’ve never been involved on this side of affairs and given that UNSW hasn’t hosted any conferences while I’ve been there the chance to be on the host team looked to have passed me by, but then, like a knight in shining armour Siamak’s proposal made it all possible!

What are you most looking forward to?Definitely the social on Wednesday night, its my 21st and over 2500 people are invited! So I’m hoping it is going to be a celebration to remember.

If you could interview anyone from your life living or dead, who would it be and why?I’d have to pick John F Kennedy, the perfect mix of political and style icon, the possibilities are endless.

Have you ever met anyone famous? On a political note, I’ve given a rose to Laura Bush.

How do you think WorldMUN Melbourne will turn out?Having seen how hard everyone has been working on it I’m hopeful that its going to turn out brilliantly. Its Australia’s time to show the MUN world what we’ve got and I really don’t think we’ll disappoint. The one thing I can guarantee though is with the gruelling training we’ve put our committee chairs through our daises will all run smoothly and effectively.

Complexities involved so farThere have been times where its been a little annoying that Nic and I are up in Sydney while the rest of the team is down in Melbourne. But with the modern marvels of Facebook, Skype and phones we’ve mostly overcome it.

G’day, My name is Nic Lochner and I’m stoked to be one of the external advisor’s for WorldMUN 2013. I started participating in MUN back in high school and almost a decade later, WorldMUN 2013 is the most exciting one yet. I’m a strong believer in young people playing a proactive role in politics, and model UN affords today’s youth the avenues to develop skills and relationships to make that difference we’re all told we capable of.

I’m a final year Bachelor of Arts student from Sydney’s University of New South Wales, majoring in politics and international relations. My studies have provided me the opportunity to run for government, found a social media campaign, and travel the world. On the weekends I’m avid cricket player – spending my Saturdays as a wicketkeeper-batsman for the picturesque Coogee Beach. My role as an external adviser oversees the crisis management and logistical problem solving aspects of the conference. Jon and I are here to help address any of the issues that may arise in committee: from IT problems, to rules of procedure explanations. Worst experience?I was unfortunate enough to share a bed with another member of our delegation in Singapore back in 2011. He was a restless sleeper – often practising various martial arts in his sleep. After a long day in committee and a longer night out, its never pleasant to be kept awake, and then bruised for your troubles.

Best experience? Best MUN experience was at the UN’s own GMUN in 2011. Meeting and chatting with the likes of Ban Ki-moon and Kiyotaka Akasaka was fantastic in itself, but to also walk away as the first Australian to bring home an award from the conference was something special. I still treasure my first edition copy of the UN’s PGA Handbook.

Favourite place in the worldIririki Island off the coast of Vanuatu. There is no truer paradise.

You’re stuck on an island. You can take 5 things. What are they?Chuck Bass would have to be the first thing on my list – one can’t travel without someone for company. I would most certainly need my iPhone, otherwise there’s no way Sia could get a hold of me to do some WorldMUN work. Third; I would need a solar powered generator to keep the charge going. Fourth, a beach cricket set since experience has taught me coconuts do not bounce on the sand. And finally, I’d need a first class ticket from Vanuatu to Sydney so I can return from Iririki Island.

You can eat one thing for the rest of your life. What is it?Bacon. It would be a short life, but one worth it.

How do you spend your free time?I’ve been called “cricket obsessive”, so you can often find me watching, playing or training for a match.

Your favourite physical featureOf a girl? Her laugh – you can tell a lot about a person by their sense of humour.

What attracted you to WorldMUN?WorldMUN affords young people around the world, a unique opportunity to come together and discuss issues of international importance. The spirit that binds these delegates is something real life diplomats aspire to replicate – and too often come up short. The WorldMUN spirit is special and differentiates this conference from the thousands of others that young people participate in every day. When Sia approached me to be a part of that, I could never have said no.

What are you most looking forward to?Its been a dream of mine since about 2009 to see WorldMUN come to Australia – so just having it here at home is the thing I’m most looking forward to. Once you’ve travelled the world and been to some of the biggest and best Model UNs, there’s no better time to call it quits than one in your own backyard.

If you could interview anyone from your life living or dead, who would it be and why?Alan Jones. Need I say why?

How do you think WorldMUN Melbourne will turn out?Australians always throw the best parties, and are known for being some of the best debaters, so to say its going to be an amazing experience is probably understating.

Complexities involved so farWe’ve had some concerns handling the recent Drop-Bear outbreak in Melbourne, so that’s probably been the toughest thing to manage. Everything should be fine as long as delegates don’t stand or camp under any trees in their territory.
