It was the Tuesday after Christmas that I made up my mind to repay some calls. I had not beeH out of the yard, so to speak, for a long time, and that morning, as I was busy at my work, I had made the resolve to go; perhaps a little visiting might enliven me some- what. So, after dinner, I put on my black alpacca and new winter hat, and really, when I was ready to start, and had ta ken a good turn before the glass, I Ecarcely knew myself. Even little Tot seemed to notice the change for he came up and patted my dress, jabbering in his sweet, cunning way we all love so well to hear. Giving him a good bye Kiss, and telling Lucy to stay in the house and mind Jane, off I started. While I was dressing, I had made up my mind what route to take. There was 3Ire. Jones, first; then Miss Cling, the music teacher; then Mrs. Flint; and from there around to Flicker's. These four calls at least. How beautiful everything looked. The sun shone brightly overhead, and my spirits rose with the scene. A lew minutes' walk brought me to Mrs. Jones' neat little house. She met me at the door, with: "My dear, how very kind of you to come this afternoon; Jim all alone, as you see, for the child- ren are out at my sister's, spending the holidays." Tfie children mentioned are two girls and a boy, ages from 18 to 24 years. "How 1 wish," said I "that my chil- dren were grown." "Don't let me hear you talk so," cried she in her kind, motherly way, that re-mi- n ded mc of my own dear mother far away. "Now is your happy time with them ; don't be planning for their fu- ture, but enjoy them every day and hour." "I do, but sometimes my patience gives out when they are so noisy." "Just listen to this foolish mother," she interposed. "Thev may give you the headache now with their innocent prattle, but your heartache will come after awhile." Then she told me of her Willy who came home once only once with stag- gering steps; of her sorrow and anguish; how she had prayed with and for him.' And as she went on my tears flowed with hers, and I felt that I had, indeed, done wrong to complain of my troubles! "But," said she, brightening up, "my girls are all to me a mother could wish. When Mr. Jones died his last words were: 'Make good men and women of them.' But it was not God's will I should keep both my boys. Why do I entertain you with my sorrow? Your face is as long as the moral law." And in a few moments we were chat- ting gaily. When I left the house I felt calmer, and more like my old self than I had for a long time. I went straight from there to the Deacon's, where Miss Cling boarded. No sooner had I entered the room than she burst out crying. I was much sur- prised. After a little she said : "Such lad, sad news,', and held up a telegram. I read it through. Her only brother, a fine young man whom I had known for years, was dead tnd buried. "Only think of him away out there, faraway from home and friend ; the thought is terrible terrible 1" I tried in my weak way to comfort the orrowinggirl. "Dont think of him as dead, remem- ber he is only gone' before, to that beau- tiful 'Land of the Leal."' J djd not itT Jopp;, frr In grief thert it no coneolation like rest, and time alone can heal the wound. As I neared Mrs. Flint's, everything bad a closed-u- p look, as though no one was at home. Sure enough, the girl said: "Faith and she's to her mither's." I left my card and proceeded toward the "Flicker Mansion." Now I had put off this call to the last lor this reason, I did not care to stay long, and thought the lateness of the hour would be a good excuse. They or rather, Mr. Flicker is the moBt influential person in town, and a gentleman in every sense of the word. His wife and daughter well I won't say it. But I was entertained in this fashion : Mrs. Flicker "Why, I'm delighted to see you once more. How are the little ones? Did you leave them at home!" I reply that -"- They are well and with Jane." "Indeed!" said she, in a tone that makes one uncomfortable. " Have you been out all the after noon!" "Yes, ma'am," I reply. "Where have you called!" "On Mrs. Jones." "O, have you!" said she interrupting me. "How is the old thing, anyhow? Some one was telling me she was nearly dead, on account of Billy's difgrace. Now, I know nothing abour it, of course, for it is none of my affair; but no girl of mine shall go or keep com- pany with a young man when he goes home every other night so drunk he don't know A from B." Now, I knew that her daughter had been angling for this same "Billy," but he preferred a certain little blue-eye- d Grace, and you know the fox in the song: When he tried for near an hour. Then he vowed the grapes were sour. Miss Kate Flicker came into the room jutt now. She is really a handsome girl. With a different exiiuople than her mother's, she would make a splendid woman. " Kate, have you done practicing? I wish there was a ccod music teacher in town, Mies Cling is so common." "Did you know," said Kate, "that Jim Wright took music lessons?" "Yes," said Mrs. Flicker, "they say she spends more time at Wright's than with any of the other scholars, though, of course, it's nothing to me;" with a toss of the head and a 6mile that made her false teeth shine. "Our money is as good as anybody's, I reckon, and I do know she never stays here more than an hour." "May be she finds young men interest- ing pupils," interposed Kate, with a laugh and a shrug. (I am heartily dis- gusted, and wish I was home.) "Phil- lips takes in washing. She used to hire her own out. I always thought she would have to come down a little. What ever would have become of them if the old man was to die? I don't know, though, she did tell me they had money out on interest. I don't know where, I'm sure; but then what 1b it to me?" "They say the clerk at Boswell's has a wife and child back in York," says Mrs. Flicker, glibly. "O, horrors 1" I mutter under breath, "what next?" "He was here a couple of evenings to see Kate, but when we heard that, Kate gave him his walking ticket in a hurry." Here Kate says ehe will run over to Mercer's and see if Salina has her hair in curls, or if there are any drab-colore- d piecies lying around this time. "Well, did you hear that old Mercer had mortgaged his house for a thousand dollars? I just wonder if it's so. One hears so much, you know. They say Salina is making her wedding clothes, though whether it is true or not I couldn't say. I've no.ver set foot inside their door, for my part, though they are in here every day." "Well, said Kate, as she tripped out of the room, "I think I should do with less for my wedding trousseau, if it couldn't be got without mortgaging the house," and she gave her pretty shoulders another shrug. "Well, as I was saying about the clerk," (I was in hopes she would let the clerk rest in peace) ,Mhough, of course, I know nothing at all about it, only what everybody says, he has a wife in York and he goes to Phillips' every Sunday night regular. You know he has to go right past here; though, of course, I couldn't say what he goes lor. But you ought to see that girl primp up and fix and run to the gate. Though, of course, one hears so much, you know, and everybody says he goes to see her, and I did hear he had her to church Christmas night, but Kate and I were neither of us there. Sensible people are the ones that stay in doors dark stormy nights," (this with the moat satisfied look imaginable). "They Ve got such a good joke on old Mrs. Phillips. You know the night of Smith's party?" (I nod assent.) "Well, that night this what's his Bame I forget, well it don't matter this clerk took Minnie Powell home, and the very next day she goes over to see Mrs. Powell, and while she is there brings up the sabject of parties and beaus, and says she, 'Mrs. Powell, you ought not to allow Minnie to have beaus already. She is too youag,' and upon my word, Mrs. Ball, there ain't a week's difference in their ages. (Of course I laugh at this). But what she wants ot a married man for a son-im-la- w is more than I can make out" "Maybe the don't believe these stories," I venture to remark. "Well, I don't care, no girl of miae should keep company with ayouag man that was the town talk," And thus was I entertained (?) for one olid hour. First one, then another was brpPgbt pp ind "picked to pta." ejtf the winding up would be: "Though, of course, I know nothing about it. One hears so much, you know." My share of the conversation had chiefly consisted of, "ah," "indeed," "I bad not heard," and the like. Even if I bad wished it, there was not the least chance of saying anything else, for Mrs. Flicker, delighted at having some one to talk to, hardly stopped to draw a long breath. At last, rising in the midst of a thrilling story about some- body's hired girl, Christmas gifts, and so forth, all jumbled up together, I told her I must be going home, for it was getting late. At the door I had a good chance, and so I said : "Well, I don't know but the best plan is to Btay at home, for when I do go out I hear so much that I am perfectly dis- gusted." "That is just what I told Kate the other day," said she, folding her arms complacently. "One can never go out without hearing so much slander and back biting. I never saw such a town, anyhow. There are more awful things happen here than any town I ever heard of." And she gave a long, deep sigh, whether for the town or over my depart- ure, remains an open question in my mind yet. "Well, well," said I to myself, as she walked away, "she don't know how very disgusting it is. The very next one she meets will hear all about my affairs, I suppose. I di believe I've heaH some- thing isbout every one in town " Anr7 mv hrtrt was ladder far than when I left Mrs. Jones', with her heartaches frch on my mind, or Miss ding's, with her grent bereavement. Sorry, not for her woes, but for her idle, useless life her silly, slanderous tongue. And I went home to my darling children, de- termined to try and profit by my visits. And I said that night to John: "If I have nothing good to say about my neighbors, I'll just hit still and hold my tongue." Cincinnati Timet. Industrial. Thomas G. The Easton Star has the following about two diminutive young ladies from the lower part of Delaware, who are attracting attention j ast now : The two dwarfs the Misses Marine exhibited at the Paragon House last week by Mrs. Linder, from Greensborough, are truly extraordinary natural curiosities. These young ladies were born and raised in Sussex County, Delaware. Miss Lizzie, 28 years old, is 88 inches tall, and weighs 55 pounds. Miss Amanda, 18 years old, is 87 inches tall, and weighs but 50 pounds. They have good heads, of the natural size, are intelligent, and converse fluently. They have no bones in their bodies, only a sort of muscle or cartilage, and can bend their hands and fingers in any direction. MY THREE CALLS.

It was the Tuesday after Christmasthat I made up my mind to repay somecalls. I had not beeH out of the yard,so to speak, for a long time, and thatmorning, as I was busy at my work, Ihad made the resolve to go; perhaps alittle visiting might enliven me some-

what. So, after dinner, I put on my black

alpacca and new winter hat, and really, when I was ready to start, and had taken a good turn before the glass, IEcarcely knew myself. Even little Totseemed to notice the change for hecame up and patted my dress, jabberingin his sweet, cunning way we all love sowell to hear. Giving him a good byeKiss, and telling Lucy to stay in thehouse and mind Jane, off I started.

While I was dressing, I had made upmy mind what route to take. Therewas 3Ire. Jones, first; then Miss Cling, the music teacher; then Mrs. Flint; andfrom there around to Flicker's. Thesefour calls at least.

How beautiful everything looked. The sun shone brightly overhead, andmy spirits rose with the scene.

A lew minutes' walk brought me toMrs. Jones' neat little house. She metme at the door, with: "My dear, howvery kind of you to come this afternoon;

Jim all alone, as you see, for the child-ren are out at my sister's, spending theholidays." Tfie children mentioned aretwo girls and a boy, ages from 18 to 24

years."How 1 wish," said I "that my chil-

dren were grown.""Don't let me hear you talk so," cried

she in her kind, motherly way, that re-mi- n

ded mc of my own dear mother faraway. "Now is your happy time withthem ; don't be planning for their fu-

ture, but enjoy them every day andhour."

"I do, but sometimes my patiencegives out when they are so noisy."

"Just listen to this foolish mother,"she interposed. "Thev may give youthe headache now with their innocentprattle, but your heartache will comeafter awhile."

Then she told me of her Willy whocame home once only once with stag-gering steps; of her sorrow and anguish;how she had prayed with and for him.'And as she went on my tears flowedwith hers, and I felt that I had, indeed, done wrong to complain of my troubles!

"But," said she, brightening up, "mygirls are all to me a mother could wish. When Mr. Jones died his last wordswere: 'Make good men and women ofthem.' But it was not God's will Ishould keep both my boys. Why do Ientertain you with my sorrow? Yourface is as long as the moral law."

And in a few moments we were chat-ting gaily. When I left the house Ifelt calmer, and more like my old selfthan I had for a long time.

I went straight from there to theDeacon's, where Miss Cling boarded. No sooner had I entered the room thanshe burst out crying. I was much sur-prised. After a little she said :

"Such lad, sad news,', and held up atelegram. I read it through. Her onlybrother, a fine young man whom I hadknown for years, was dead tnd buried.

"Only think of him away out there, faraway from home and friend ; thethought is terrible terrible 1"

I tried in my weak way to comfort theorrowinggirl.

"Dont think of him as dead, remem-ber he is only gone' before, to that beau-

tiful 'Land of the Leal."'J djd not itT Jopp;, frr In grief thert

it no coneolation like rest, and timealone can heal the wound.

As I neared Mrs. Flint's, everything

bad a closed-u- p look, as though no one

was at home. Sure enough, the girlsaid:

"Faith and she's to her mither's."

I left my card and proceeded toward

the "Flicker Mansion."Now I had put off this call to the last

lor this reason, I did not care to stay

long, and thought the lateness of the

hour would be a good excuse.

They or rather, Mr. Flicker is themoBt influential person in town, and a

gentleman in every sense of the word. His wife and daughter well I won'tsay it. But I was entertained in thisfashion :

Mrs. Flicker "Why, I'm delighted to

see you once more. How are the littleones? Did you leave them at home!"

I reply that -"-They are well and with

Jane.""Indeed!" said she, in a tone that

makes one uncomfortable." Have you been out all the after

noon!""Yes, ma'am," I reply."Where have you called!""On Mrs. Jones.""O, have you!" said she interrupting

me. "How is the old thing, anyhow?

Some one was telling me she was nearly

dead, on account of Billy's difgrace. Now, I know nothing abour it, of

course, for it is none of my affair; but

no girl of mine shall go or keep com-

pany with a young man when he goes

home every other night so drunk he

don't know A from B."Now, I knew that her daughter had

been angling for this same "Billy," buthe preferred a certain little blue-eye- d

Grace, and you know the fox in thesong:

When he tried for near an hour. Then he vowed the grapes were sour.

Miss Kate Flicker came into the room

jutt now. She is really a handsomegirl. With a different exiiuople than hermother's, she would make a splendidwoman.

" Kate, have you done practicing? Iwish there was a ccod music teacher intown, Mies Cling is so common."

"Did you know," said Kate, "that JimWright took music lessons?"

"Yes," said Mrs. Flicker, "they sayshe spends more time at Wright's thanwith any of the other scholars, though,of course, it's nothing to me;" with atoss of the head and a 6mile that madeher false teeth shine. "Our money is asgood as anybody's, I reckon, and I do

know she never stays here more than anhour."

"May be she finds young men interest-ing pupils," interposed Kate, with alaugh and a shrug. (I am heartily dis-

gusted, and wish I was home.) "Phil-lips takes in washing. She used to hireher own out. I always thought she wouldhave to come down a little. What everwould have become of them if the oldman was to die? I don't know, though, she did tell me they had money out oninterest. I don't know where, I'm sure;but then what 1b it to me?"

"They say the clerk at Boswell's hasa wife and child back in York," saysMrs. Flicker, glibly.

"O, horrors 1" I mutter under breath,"what next?"

"He was here a couple of evenings tosee Kate, but when we heard that, Kategave him his walking ticket in a hurry."

Here Kate says ehe will run over toMercer's and see if Salina has her hairin curls, or if there are any drab-colore- d

piecies lying around this time."Well, did you hear that old Mercer

had mortgaged his house for a thousanddollars? I just wonder if it's so. Onehears so much, you know. They saySalina is making her wedding clothes, though whether it is true or not Icouldn't say. I've no.ver set foot insidetheir door, for my part, though they arein here every day."

"Well, said Kate, as she tripped outof the room, "I think I should do withless for my wedding trousseau, if itcouldn't be got without mortgaging thehouse," and she gave her pretty shouldersanother shrug.

"Well, as I was saying about theclerk," (I was in hopes she would letthe clerk rest in peace) ,Mhough, ofcourse, I know nothing at all about it,only what everybody says, he has a wifein York and he goes to Phillips' everySunday night regular. You know hehas to go right past here; though, ofcourse, I couldn't say what he goes lor.But you ought to see that girl primp upand fix and run to the gate. Though,of course, one hears so much, you know, and everybody says he goes to see her,and I did hear he had her to churchChristmas night, but Kate and I wereneither of us there. Sensible people arethe ones that stay in doors dark stormynights," (this with the moat satisfiedlook imaginable). "They Ve got such agood joke on old Mrs. Phillips. Youknow the night of Smith's party?" (Inod assent.) "Well, that night thiswhat's his Bame I forget, well it don'tmatter this clerk took Minnie Powellhome, and the very next day she goesover to see Mrs. Powell, and while sheis there brings up the sabject of partiesand beaus, and says she, 'Mrs. Powell, you ought not to allow Minnie to havebeaus already. She is too youag,' andupon my word, Mrs. Ball, there ain't aweek's difference in their ages. (Ofcourse I laugh at this). But what shewants ot a married man for a son-im-la-w

is more than I can make out""Maybe the don't believe these

stories," I venture to remark."Well, I don't care, no girl of miae

should keep company with ayouag manthat was the town talk,"

And thus was I entertained (?) for oneolid hour. First one, then another was

the winding up would be: "Though, ofcourse, I know nothing about it. One

hears so much, you know."My share of the conversation had

chiefly consisted of, "ah," "indeed," "Ibad not heard," and the like. Even ifI bad wished it, there was not the leastchance of saying anything else, forMrs. Flicker, delighted at having someone to talk to, hardly stopped to drawa long breath. At last, rising in themidst of a thrilling story about some-

body's hired girl, Christmas gifts, andso forth, all jumbled up together, Itold her I must be going home, for itwas getting late. At the door I had agood chance, and so I said :

"Well, I don't know but the best planis to Btay at home, for when I do go outI hear so much that I am perfectly dis-

gusted.""That is just what I told Kate the

other day," said she, folding her armscomplacently. "One can never go outwithout hearing so much slander andback biting. I never saw such a town, anyhow. There are more awful thingshappen here than any town I ever heardof." And she gave a long, deep sigh, whether for the town or over my depart-ure, remains an open question in mymind yet.

"Well, well," said I to myself, as shewalked away, "she don't know how verydisgusting it is. The very next one shemeets will hear all about my affairs, Isuppose. I di believe I've heaH some-thing isbout every one in town " Anr7

mv hrtrt was ladder far than when Ileft Mrs. Jones', with her heartachesfrch on my mind, or Miss ding's, withher grent bereavement. Sorry, not forher woes, but for her idle, useless lifeher silly, slanderous tongue. And Iwent home to my darling children, de-

termined to try and profit by my visits. And I said that night to John:

"If I have nothing good to say aboutmy neighbors, I'll just hit still and holdmy tongue." Cincinnati Timet.
