Lincoln University graduate James Hyde has claimed The Property Institute of New Zealand’s Student of the Year prize.

The prize is awarded to the top student completing the Bachelor of Commerce in Valuation and Property Management (VAPM) at Lincoln University, which he achieved this with an average of 76 per cent in the specified 300 level courses.

“I have always wanted to get into property investment and saw this degree as a great way to get into a career that will give me knowledge and experience to become a successful investor,” Mr Hyde said.

“Another reason that I chose the valuation degree was that I saw it was a degree that had good career and job prospects.”

He said he was steered to Lincoln through the influence of a family member already in the field.

“My uncle owns a valuation business in Nelson and he was the main person

who sparked my interest in the valuation degree at Lincoln University.”

While he is about to embark on some OE he intends to use his degree at some stage in the future.

“At this stage, after my travelling I don’t know where I want to settle down, but I will definitely begin a career in valuation.”

Coastguard volunteers bring over 7330 people home safely each year and now they are calling on the people of Selwyn to help them to continue to do their job.

May sees the beginning of Coastguard’s annual MayDay appeal, calling for donations to help volunteers continue to save lives.

“Coastguard is a charity and only receives 15 percent of its funds from the government,” Coastguard CEO Patrick Holmes said.

“The remaining 85% comes from supportive organisations and individuals who recognise the importance of our work.

“MayDay is an important component of our fundraising stream and we rely on public donations so we can continue saving lives at sea.  We’re urging the public to support the vital service we provide by donating at coastguard.co.nz.”

The organisation operates from a network of four regions and 70 affiliated units, located around the coastline and major lakes of New Zealand.

World Cup winning coach Sir Graham Henry has joined the Coastguard team as official ambassador for this year’s MayDay appeal.

“Coastguard is a charity made up of great volunteers,” Sir Graham said.

“They’re generous kiwis that have day jobs just like you and I giving up their time to save lives at sea.  Coastguard is a great organisation doing great things to keep kiwis safe on the water.  I really hope New Zealanders get behind this great cause and make a donation this MayDay.”

In 2014, Coastguard received more than 277,000 calls for help and gave over 315,000 hours to help rescue people in distress.

Donations can be made at  www.coastguard.co.nz

The government recently announced it is planning to extend ultra-fast broadband and continue funding rural broadband expansion as well as establish a new mobile blackspot fund.

The Selwyn council has launched survey to find residents who are having problems with broadband and cell phone coverage.

Council chief executive David Ward said the survey is designed to gather information from Selwyn residents, business owners, including farm owners, schools and emergency service providers, about whether they are experiencing problems with internet access, speed or reliability or with mobile phone coverage.

“We have heard from a number of people that problems with internet access or mobile coverage are affecting local residents and businesses in

a number of areas of Selwyn,” Mr Ward said.

“The survey aims to identify which areas are experiencing issues and what the problems are - for example, are they impacting people’s ability to do business or to access information and services.

“The council will use this information to consider if Selwyn is eligible to apply to the government for funding to improve internet services or mobile coverage,” he said.

The survey asks residents, business owners, farmers, schools and emergency services where they are located, what internet service they have access to and how any issues with internet or mobile phone services affect their operations.

To complete the survey people need to go to www.selwyn.govt.nz/haveyoursay and they have until May 26 to complete the survey.

Instead she is still ready to meet the challenge generated by the digital age of how to preserve the plethora of data academic institutions generate.

A former head of the National Library, she recently finished four years at the university, seemingly bringing down the closing curtain on a distinguished career, and allowing her to spend some time at her Banks Peninsula property completing ‘put-off tasks’.

However, the pressing issue of the preservation of raw data is something which will also command her attention.

Different formats go out of date and become obsolete, and Emeritus Professor Carnaby said data is being lost, which is unacceptable.

“A lot of research data will also just be sitting on someone’s desktop computer. The results might be published but the raw data could yield even more in the long-run.”

Work goes on for retired emeritus professorAmong the millions of words she may have sought to categorise and preserve, ‘retirement’ may not be one former Lincoln University librarian, and Emeritus Professor of Digital Knowledge Systems, Penny Carnaby will become too familiar with.

Finding how to store data in a way which was constantly being updated so it was accessible was something she started at the National Library, and continued at Lincoln.

“It is a huge issue, and the university has taken the lead on it,” she said.

She was named emeritus professor at her retirement function, which allows her to retain the same title she had during her career.

Emeritus Professor Carnaby said  it gives her a connection for life to the University.

“It means a huge amount. It was a total surprise and a lovely thing to get.”

She said it also recognises the ‘very talented and exceptional team’ she has worked with at Lincoln.

She was also pleased that during her tenure Lincoln had become the first university in New Zealand to have a comprehensive open-access policy for

Council recently approved changes to speed limits in a number of areas which coincided with a decision by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), which is responsible for speed limits on the country’s main highways, to reduce the speed limit through Springfield.

Council’s transportation asset engineer Mark Chamberlain said the change in speed limits apply from May 1 and the changes would be enforceable as soon as the new signage and pavement markings are in place.

“One of the major changes is that the

Changes to local speed limits come into forceA raft of speed limit changes around the district come into force this month.

speed limit will reduce from 100kmh on many of the main routes from around Prebbleton to Christchurch,” Mr Chamberlain said.

“These roads are becoming increasing busy and a lower speed limit is appropriate as a road safety measure given the number of busy intersections along these roads.”

Speed limit reductions will also be made in a number of towns.

In Rolleston, speed limits will reduce in the Izone area, the new Faringdon subdivision and Foster Park area,

on Brookside and Dunns Crossing Road near the new Rolleston West School with other speed reductions also occurring on the town’s outskirts on Goulds Road, Dynes Road, Levi Road and Springston Rolleston Road. Speed limit reductions are also planned for some roads in the following townships: Burnham, Darfield, Doyleston, Hororata, Leeston, Lincoln, Prebbleton, Selwyn Huts, Sheffield, Southbridge, Springston, Tai Tapu and West Melton.

“In most cases the changes reflect

the growth of townships with residential speed limits being extended to take in areas where new subdivisions or housing has been established,” Mr Chamberlain said.

“In a number of areas such as Doyleston and Springston reductions to speed limits are also a result of requests from local residents or township committees for lower speed limits to improve safety.”

A list of locations where changes to speed limits are planned is available online at www.selwyn.govt.nz.

Painter Stephanie McEwin, winner of the Christchurch Art Show Award last year and mixed-media artist Sarah Kentish-Barnes will display their works at the gallery throughout the month of May.

McEwin is a figurative painter who is completing an arts degree at Canterbury University, and her works entitled ‘Good Vibrations’ takes on the subject of bathers.

Following the earthquakes of 2011 McEwin moved to a property on Old West Coast Road near West Melton

where she is now building a studio.Kentish-Barnes trained as a

printmaker, and according to Ms Cole she applies the printmaking ethos of layering to whichever medium she uses.

The exhibition opened last Friday and runs through until May 28. The Selwyn Gallery will be open daily (except Mondays) from 10am to 4pm for duration of this exhibition.

An exhibition programme is available on the gallery’s website www.selwyngallery.co.nz or from the gallery. West Melton artist Stephanie McEwin will display her work at the Selwyn Gallery in Darfield.

Over 20 senior Selwyn residents took to the road in style recently as the Rolleston Day Club enjoyed an outing in vintage cars. Eight vintage cars dating from the 1920s to the 1960s were used to take day club members on a tour around Rolleston and over to Lincoln. The cars were loaned and driven by local vintage car enthusiasts and included a 1929 Studebaker, a 1939 Austin and two Mark III Zephyrs. Day Clubs are held regularly in Darfield, Leeston, Lincoln and Rolleston and povide a day of fun activities, board games, friendship, discussion, seated music and movement classes for older residents. Casey Burrows, pictured right, with his older sister, Kyla recently became the 400th pupil at West Melton Primary School. Casey joined the New Entrant class while Kyla is a Year 8 student. The school now has a roll of 405 students and principal Sue Jackson is predicting by the end of the year that number will have reached 450. Construction of a new two storey 12-classroom block and new administration area is set to get underway in July to help cope with the school’s burgeoning roll. Meanwhile, this term Greendale School added to its roll with three new pupils. Pictured left are Henry, Hayden and Cearnaigh Dawson who joins his older brother Toren at the school. The roll for the two-classroom rural school has now hit 30 pupils.

This month 10 players from the university’s division one rugby team are away representing their country.

The side has a big representation in the New Zealand Under-20 squad heading to the Gold Coast for the Oceania Junior Rugby Championships and then onto the Junior World Championships in Italy in June, with five players out of the overall eight from Canterbury.

Another five are off to Japan as part of the New Zealand Universities team for a three-match tour.

The university’s division one side has won the Hawkins Cup for the last two seasons in the Christchurch Metro competition.

“Success breeds success, and Lincoln is now being seen as a place of destination for rugby,” head coach John Haggart said.

Many of the players are on sports scholarships and come to the Lincoln University club from around New Zealand.

Mr Haggart said they can see there is plenty of opportunity to become a better player and gain a meaningful qualification.

Twin brothers Josh and Jack Goodhue, a lock and second five respectively, have made the U20 side, along with Hamish Dalzell, Tom Hill and Mitchell Dunshea.

Jack has already played for the All Black Sevens, and for the Canterbury ITM Cup side, and is described by Mr Haggart as having a ‘big future’.

Dalzell, originally from North Canterbury now living in Selwyn, and a relation to the Whitelock rugby clan, has had success in his second year at Lincoln University.

“He was at Lincoln last year but suffered from glandular fever and missed our premier colts’ squad, and played division two,” Mr Haggart said.

“It was a great experience for him playing against men and he is still eligible for New Zealand U20 next year.”

Hill joined the club this year after being at HSOB in 2014, while Dunshea is a product of Lincoln High School.

Mr Haggart said Dunshea has made the transition to division one this year with ease.

They are following in the footsteps of Lincoln players like All Black Dominic Bird, and Crusaders Jordan Taufua

and Scott Barrett, who have all been in the U20s.

Tom Sanders, himself an U20 rep last year, is part of the New Zealand Universities team, after being  released from the Crusaders to go to Japan, along with Jack Stratton, who has been a back-up halfback for the Crusaders, Nick Werahiko, Ere Enari and Broc Hooper.

Tom also played in the ITM Cup last year for Canterbury while the others are all in the Crusader Knights.

Reflecting on why the Lincoln side has such a big representation in the national squads, Mr Haggart said players were  developed through establishing good structures, organisation and enjoyment.

“This comes from playing a brand of rugby that allows them to express their skills. We use a lot of video analysis to assist with learning and promote a self-driven environment.”

“Ensuring we have good people in our coaching and management teams and having fantastic support from the University and scholarship programme all add-up to a successful outcome, Mr Haggart said.

Breeding ground for rugby talentLincoln University is proving to be a breeding ground for rising new Zealand rugby talent.

A co-operation agreement has been signed between Shanghai Jiguang Polytechnic College (SJPC), the New Zealand College of Business (NZCB) and Lincoln University.

Dr Yu said the agreement offers SJPC students the opportunity to matriculate in New Zealand via a special pathway — studying firstly NZCB diplomas and then Lincoln’s bachelor and or master qualifications.

Lincoln University’s forging of new ties in one of the world’s biggest cities shows it can hold its own in a strongly competitive recruitment environment according to the university’s business development manager Dr Samuel Yu.

Contesting megacity education market

“The NZCB-Lincoln pathway is a good way for students to have a tangible, clear pathway to an internationally recognised qualification at Lincoln,” Dr Yu said.

“Although many New Zealand organisations are increasingly exploring opportunities in the inner cities of China, Shanghai city, located in the eastern coastal region, remains an important top tier one populated city, with its 24 million inhabitants.”

But it does come with fierce competition from education institutes in the United States and the United Kingdom.

However, Dr Yu said, Lincoln University is “on the right track with clearly differentiated, strongly specialised, premium offerings that can stand out from the crowd”.

Rolleston Primary School students learnt of the importance of Anzac Day when they were spoken to by Captain Aaron Soppet from the New Zealand Army recently. Captain Soppet, pictured above left, spoke about the significance of Anzac Day in the build up to the event. The school held a Remembrance assembly on the Friday before Anzac Day, where pupils sung songs from the war years, read poems they had written and the last post was played. Year 7 teacher Kerri Dekkers said the assembly was the culmination of a lot of study leading into Anzac Day. Year 8 student Antoinette Hemstra, pictured above right, reads her poem Soldier which won the senior writing competition for book week heading into Anzac Day.

Bird Feeder If she loves

gardening or the outdoors a

beautiful bird feeder could be a nice addition to her garden.

Spa dayTreat Mum to a spa day. Nothing melts away the stress more than

being pampered. Something as simple as a pedicure and a chance to get away for an hour

could be the perfect gift for Mum, especially if she is a new mother.

Christian Mothering Sunday celebration (originally a celebration of the mother church, not motherhood). Despite this, in some countries Mother’s Day has become synonymous with these older traditions.

The modern Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908 in the United States, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia.

Anna’s mission was to honour her own mother by continuing work she started and to set aside a day to honour mothers, ‘the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world’. Anna’s mother, Ann Jarvis, was a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the  Civil War  and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues.

Day can be a difficult task for some but with a little creative thinking and planning you can surprise Mum with just the right gift to make her smile.

First put some thought into it. This is the woman who carried you around for 9 months, cooked for you, did your dirty laundry and raised you to have some manners.

Don’t go to the store and purchase that first bouquet of roses you find. Consider her interests and what she likes before plopping down some cash. Some great gift ideas to consider are:

The WWA international farming conference, which is expected to attract more than 200 farmers, will be held at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre from June 22 to 23 and will feature

International agricultural conference on Selwyn doorstepSelwyn farmers are to get a great opportunity to learn more about national and international developments in their industry when Ashburton hosts the World Wide Agriculture conference next month.

internationally renowned agricultural experts from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and the United States.

Hororata’s Bruce Hore, WWA convenor and founder of AgriGanics Limited, said he’s thrilled to be bringing some of the world’s top scientists and consultants in their field to the South Island.

“It’s a huge opportunity for farmers from across the South Island and also from around New Zealand to come and learn about some of the developments and technologies happening both here

and overseas and also to bust some of the myths and folk laws around conventional farming methods.”

“The industry has huge growth potential and is not only becoming a significant economic player it’s helping to ensure farming continues to evolve sustainably. “

Mr Hore said the aim of the conference is to show farmers how they can increase their yields by spending the same amount they would have before applying conventional fertiliser products.

“We’re increasingly learning more about the benefits of conventional farming practices and the importance of starting from the ground up.

“In New Zealand we want to portray ourselves as clean and green, but the reality is traditional farming methods can be counterproductive and don’t give as good yields.

“We are now discovering better ways to ensure we are not only doing the right thing environmentally but we’re also getting better and more sustainable results, bigger yields, which of course benefits the whole country economically.”

He said farmers around the world are experiencing the same challenges with lower yields, higher costs, chemical resistance and more extreme weather

patterns, all of which affect their results. “It’s also an opportunity to listen to

farmers who are using these methods, and beating their best ever yields, especially the cropping farmers. It’s a chance to hear from real people in the business.”

Mr Hore said if farmers cannot reverse the trend of yields dropping they won’t be able to farm profitably.

“It’s also about being able to respond to what consumers want. People are becoming more aware of where their food is sourced. They want food that has been grown conventionally with lower chemical inputs.

“Cropping and dairy farmers will really benefit from attending the WWA conference and learning from some of the best in the business,” he said.

Neal Kinsey, from Kinsey Agricultural Service in the United States will be one of the speakers to present at the conference.

“I am extremely excited to have a part in the presentations at WWA,” he said.

Mr Kinsey owns and operates Kinsey Agricultural Services, a US-based company which specialises in soil fertility management.

He said he plans on covering at the

“From the presentations scheduled, it appears this will be one of the most useful conferences on learning the positives for the future of agricultural production with the most ground-breaking news farmers can use for building their strategies for cropping and livestock,” Mr Kinsey said..

Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay said the district’s farming community should be excited such a high calibre, international farming conference is going to be held in Ashburton.

“As a farmer myself, one always has to take the chance to look at more innovative ways of growing produce that we export and that provide jobs and opportunities for local businesses,” Mayor McKay said.

“I am very grateful to the conference organisers for bringing this event to our district and would encourage local people associated with the industry to attend.”

The change in the season is a timely reminder to all of us to slow down and adjust our driving to the conditions.

Many Selwyn residents are reporting drivers not using their lights in rain and fog, while others say they experience cars passing them at speed, when there is not sufficient clear vision ahead.

Wet, slippery, roads can be unforgiving of even small mistakes, so extra care is needed. The way we individually drive plays a big part in everyone’s safety during the winter months.

Our local roading contractors will be monitoring many of our roads, particularly in shaded areas where frost and ice can make conditions challenging. However, even when roads are covered with grit, the road only has a 40% improvement in skid resistance and still need to be driven on with caution.

Driving in winter conditions does not have to be dangerous or intimidating. By warming up your vehicle, ensuring your windscreen, mirrors and windows are clear and starting out five minutes

Some winter driving tips from the AA•Don’t forget the anti-freeze

•Check battery connections are clean and tight and the fluid levels are correct

•Check your car tyres have adequate tread depth

•Service your vehicle before winter sets in

•Carry an effective torch in the car and make sure it has working batteries

•Keep warm clothing (or a rug) in the car. If your vehicle breaks down, you might need an extra layer

•Keep your cellphone charged up. You never know when you might need it

crashes resulting in 15 fatalities, 43 serious injuries and 148 people receiving minor injuries.

Over half of all the crashes were attributed to loss of control on straight roads and on bends, with 94 occurring in wet conditions and 59 in icy conditions.

They were spread relatively evenly throughout the week, with highest number occurring in the morning between 6am and 9am and in the late afternoon from 3pm to 6pm.

While lacklustre browned off lawns of summer have been replaced with lush new growth requiring regular trimming, the spread of weeds, fungi and unwanted insects are also enjoying their insurgence.

Adding to this luscious mix of pests is the seemingly never ending supply of leaves and other foliage who have abandoned their deciduous dwellings.

While leaves can provide a great natural source of mulch when left to rot in wooded areas, you don’t want them decomposing in piles on your lawn as
