The council has been busy organising a number of events to mark Youth Week which runs from May 23 to 31, with a market day, skate jam and roller disco among the events being planned.

Lincoln High School student Rafael Clarke of Rolleston has stepped into the chairperson’s role on the council this year.

He said he is particularly looking forward to the market day which will be held in conjunction with a skate jam at Rolleston skate park on Saturday, May 30.

“We believe that the market will be a brilliant outlet for the youth of Selwyn to practise their entrepreneurship in a supportive environment,” he said.

“It will give young people a way to better develop their financial literacy and skill, with people that they know and trust at the heart of their community.”

Rafael, who emigrated to New Zealand from Kent in England with his parents and younger brother in 2009, said the youth council is more than just a vehicle for organising events.

“It is a way for the young people of Selwyn to have their voice heard at a meaningful level and that is what attracted me to it.

“Issues around the district are being addressed by people who don’t always understand the needs of the district’s younger people, or if they do, the decisions are being made without the voice of that youth being involved in the process.”

NEWS briefs

Rolleston’s latest school has been officially opened by Education Minister Hekia Parata.

Ms Parata and Selwyn MP Amy Adams recently attended the opening of Rolleston Christian School on Springston Rolleston Road.

“The fact that Selwyn now has its own Christian school is another example of our region coming of age as a significant population centre,” Ms Adams said.

“Selwyn families seeking a Christian-based education for their children will be pleased to have the option of a local school, without having to travel further afield as has been the case previously.

Official opening

Selwyn MP Amy Adams, left, and Rolleston Christian School principal Liz Horn following the school’s official opening.

“Rolleston Christian School will help take some pressure off the growing rolls at Rolleston’s existing schools, as will the three additional schools that are scheduled to open in the area within the next two years,” said Ms Adams.

West Rolleston Primary School is scheduled for opening in 2016, and Rolleston College and another new primary school are both planned for opening in 2017.

Rolleston Christian School currently has a roll of 48 with a capacity for 150 students. This will increase to 300 under stage two of the school’s development.

Budding Selwyn chefs are being reminded to get their entries in for this year’s National Secondary Schools’ Culinary Challenge.

The New Zealand competition begins with 10 regional events where teams of two Year 12/13 students go head-to-head in a live cook off.

The Canterbury regional event will be held at the CPIT Centre for Hospitality in Christchurch on June 18. Each regional winning school will receive a $500 Bidvest voucher to help train for the national final, a gift pack for each student with a chef's jacket for the final, 20 Dudson classic flat plates for Hospitality competitions and travel

assistance to get to Auckland. If successful in the regional challenge

the chefs will earn a spot at the national final in Auckland later in the year. The winners of the national event will then wing their way to Tahiti to compete in an international culinary cook off.

NSSCC Event Manager Glenn Fulcher said it is very exciting to see young talent shining through in the culinary field.

“These students always give it their best and create amazing dishes. They are our chefs of the future and this event will put their skill and creativity to the test with the added pressure of a time restricted, live cooking event."

The winners of the 2014 National Secondary Schools’ Culinary Challenge were Louis Clark, left, Chakkapong Klahan from Nelson College.

The Hilgendorf complex of buildings, which accounts for around 30% of the university’s academic floor space, is being stripped and utilities diverted in preparation for deconstruction.

The work is designed to clear the way for the construction of new teaching and research facilities as part of a campus master plan.

The university’s Corporate Services Group Manager, Murray Dickson said the finer details of the campus work are yet to be finalised.

“The announcement by the Government last year for a $107.5 million in-principle commitment to Lincoln’s future development was the green light we needed to push on with

awareness in the general public’s understanding, particularly in urban New Zealand, as to the importance, scope and opportunities inherent in the land-based industries and related areas. This is a message we have been pushing for some time now.

“These new developments stand as a ringing endorsement of the role Lincoln has played, and will continue to play, in this key space.”

Mr Dickson said along with state-of-the-art academic facilities, one of the first projects in the redevelopment will be a major student centre incorporating a range of student services.

The newspaper, which was last year named Most Improved community newspaper at the Community Newspaper Association of New Zealand’s annual awards, underwent a change of ownership at the beginning of the year.

New owner and sales manager Helen Rhodes said the paper already had a strong presence on social media and they wanted to extend that with a revamp of its website.

“We wanted to provide our readers with a way to get their community news 24/7 and to feed back to us happenings in their communities.

“In addition to website itself readers can subscribe to our newsletter for free and they will be updated with the latest news by email.

Community newspaper launches new websiteSelwyn’s award winning community newspaper The Record has launched a new website to help locals stay in touch with their communities and to provide advertisers with an online link for customers to their business.

“Advertisers are also demanding a high quality online way to promote their businesses and the revamp has given us the opportunity to provide that.”

The new website, www.therecord.co.nz, was created by Ian Knott, owner of Designian Ltd, which is also contracted by The Record for its layout, graphics and production work.

“The layout of the new website will make it easier for readers to find articles of interest to them, whether that be gardening, farming or pets as well as the latest news,” Mr Knott said.

Established in 2003, the Bio-Protection Research Centre’s (BPRC) primary goal is to strengthen the value of New Zealand's pastoral, horticultural and forestry industries through research to generate next generation bioprotection (biosecurity and biocontrol) solutions.

“We are absolutely thrilled that the Tertiary Education Commission has continued to fund the Bio-Protection Research Centre until 2020,” Lincoln University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Scholarship and Research, Dr Stefanie Rixecker said.

“The work this centre does is fundamental research that underpins plant bioprotection and plant biosecurity for New Zealand.”

The BPRC has three main research themes focused on protecting the plant-based systems in New Zealand: pests and pathogens, biological controls, and biosecurity and invasion.

“The BPRC research is led by outstanding scientists who are leaders in their respective fields and the quality of their scientific work is highly

He loved the game of tennis and was a great ambassador and enthusiast for the sport, both as a player as an administrator.

He was Patron of Canterbury Country Seniors, Malvern Lawn Tennis Sub-Association and Sheffield Tennis Club, as well as a life member of Wilding Park, the Malvern Sub Association and the Sheffield Club.

Tennis for Alec started about 1931 when as a youngster he joined the Sheffield Club. That association continued for around 84 years, playing for both the Sheffield and Kimberley Clubs.

In his later years he moved from his Racecourse Hill farm to Darfield and played Presidents Grade for Darfield. He was in his early 80s when he stopped playing competitive tennis on Saturdays, but continued playing doubles every Thursday with a group of local players until the age of 85.

In 1991 a doubles tournament was held to celebrate Alec’s 60 years membership at the Sheffield Club, and in 1994 he became its Patron. Tennis was a Swanson family occasion, his late wife Thelma and his sister Joyce Jenkins also played for Sheffield.

Alec’s association with tennis extended beyond the local club level. He was an inaugural member of the Canterbury Country Tennis Seniors

(formerly Veterans), established in 1980 and later became its Patron. He also played Browning Shield tennis, representing the Malvern District in its often close fought competitions with North Canterbury, Hurunui, Ellesmere, Mid Canterbury and West Coast.

Malvern won the Shield for a number of years from the late 1940s to 1973 with Alec a core team member. In those days being a member of the Browning Shield team was hotly contested, with regular practices and many challenges to get on to the team ladder.

In 1992, Alec retired as secretary of Malvern Sub-Association, a position he held for 43 years, and became its Patron. In recognition of his years of service he was awarded a service badge from Canterbury Tennis and in 1998 received a Community Services award from the Selwyn District Council. For many years Alec was also Treasurer and responsible for the competition draw and taking results.

He won the Over 65 NZ Veterans Tennis team title in 1996, and was regarded by many as the ultimate sportsperson and gentleman.

In March this year Alec attended the finals day of the Malvern A Grade and Presidents competitions at Kirwee.

He presented Jack Prouting with his life member badge and thoroughly enjoyed his afternoon, watching matches and catching up with many of his tennis friends.

A report from 1986 said “Alec had an ability to recognise talent and encourage and develop promising young players. Through his unflagging efforts, the game of tennis in Malvern prospered”.

The council has funding to help meet some of the costs of protecting heritage buildings and sites for the community’s benefit. This may include restoring, reinforcing and protecting heritage buildings, and other structures such as war memorials, sites and trees.

There is one funding round each year and $40,000 is available to support projects by owners of heritage buildings or protected trees.

Last year 13 grants were made. Recipients included Lakeside House, Racecourse Hill Homestead, Southbridge Hall, Darfield Stables, and heritage trees at Doyleston and Lincoln Union Church.

Firstly Melton Estate received a Qualmark NZ certification in the Venue category with a 4 Star Plus rating for its certification, one of the highest ratings awarded.

Then, in addition to that news, owners Philip and Tracy Caunter were informed their 2013 Melton Estate Chardonnay was awarded the trophy for the top Chardonnay in the annual Wines of Canterbury Wine Competition.

The chardonnay was also named the best pairing for a chicken dish and its 2013 Melton Estate Pinot Noir achieved a Bronze Award in the same competition.

So it was a very satisfying week for the Caunters who bought a rundown 4.4ha lifestyle block on Weedons Ross Road with a few grape vines over a decade ago.

The couple, who are originally from Christchurch, were living in Wellington at the time they decided to purchase their rural paradise.

“We were just starting a family and looking for a great place to raise the children,” Tracy says.

in running either a vineyard or restaurant but frequent trips to the Wairarapa and the Martinborough Wine and Food Festival had whetted their appetite.

In June of this year the couple will have been in West Melton for 13 years and the run down vineyard they first were confronted with is now an award winning venue and their wines are starting to garner an impressive list of commendations.

Renovating the dilapidated barn-like building on the property to create the nucleus of the restaurant was one of the first priorities as well as developing the vineyard including expanding the grape varieties.

“We didn’t really know what we were getting into and it has been a lot of hard work but extremely rewarding,” Tracy says.

“What we were aiming to establish was a place where people could come and celebrate an important event in their lives, a celebration venue if you like.”

In 2011 they added to the existing building as well as developing a new space called the Pavilion, increasing their guest capacity as well as proving the facilities needed for companies wanting to hold business meetings or conferences.

Those investments are now starting to pay off big time, with Melton Estate hosting up to 50 weddings a year,

While they grow the grapes their wine isn’t made on site allowing Tracy, who is the restaurant manager, to concentrate on one of their keys to success, quality service.

Four years ago they employed a vineyard manager David Ashby and Tracy says David has really had a significant impact on the business.

“Especially in terms of the quality and quantity of our grape harvest and that has led us to be able to produce create some really great wines.”

cases a year most of which is utilised for their guests with its Summer Love sparkling Riesling attracting a faithful following along with its award winning Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The Caunters are also looking to produce a ‘methode traditionelle’ sparkling wine in the tradition of French champagne using their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes.

The Caunters have also embraced the West Melton lifestyle being active in the community as supporters of the West Melton Rugby Club and membership of various organisations such as the West Melton Reserve Board.

“We want to be able to give back to the community which has welcomed us and as it is a place we are raising our children we want to contribute to its growth and development,” Tracy says.

The Pavilion is one of the new additions to Melton Estate.

New Zealand’s coastal climate makes us particularly partial to humidity or moisture in the air, leaving us with some of the world’s highest asthma rates and unpredictable winter temperatures. Reducing dampness and keeping a cosy home are important issues for most Kiwis.

The Goldair Heating Guide explains the differences between heater types and provides the knowledge required to make a smart decision on heating.

Helpful tips on heatingHigh wattage doesn’t necessarily

mean it is more expensive – a lower wattage heater may just take longer to heat the room using more power. It’s more about choosing the right heater for the right size room.

Minimise drafts and heat loss around windows and doors by closing curtains and using draft stoppers.

If your heater has a thermostat, set it to high and then when the room reaches a comfortable temperature adjust your thermostat to match. This will help you decide your own level of cosy and save you from overheating the room and wasting power.

A timer that switches on and off automatically can also save you money – set it to warm up the house before you get home, there is no need to leave it running all day.

Energy meters are a great tool which allows you to monitor the energy/power your heater is drawing.

Getting the right heater for winter warmthWith so many choices of heater available and so many different heating requirements, the question remains - how do I choose the right heater for my home?

Panel Heaters

• Great for lounges, hallways and bedrooms

• Work on convection technology

• Run quietly• Are complementary to a

heat pump• Wall mountable for tight and

tidy spaces

Fan Heaters

• Often the cheapest units to buy

• Great for personal warmth, small rooms and short running periods

Micathermic Heaters

• Double sided heating makes it great for larger spaces

• Run quietly• Have no glowing parts so are

safe for the whole familyRadiant Heaters

• Radiant heaters heat people and objects – not rooms or air

• Use quartz or halogen tubes to generate heat much like that produced by the sun

• Great for instant heat when you come home cold

• Great people whose homes will not contain heat such as old villas or drafty homes

• Provide a warm glow and ambiance

Oil Heaters

• Run quietly• Are portable• Great for gradual heating in

any sized room

Kittens are usually weaned by 6 weeks of age and leave their mothers at 8 to 10 weeks to join their new families.

A cat carrier is the safest way to transport a cat and you can start getting your new kitten used to the carrier from day one. Do place newspapers and towel in your carrier and carry an extra towel in case of accidents.

Before your kitten has contact with other cats, it is best they are thoroughly examined by your vet, treated for parasites such as worms and fleas, and immunised.

Kittens receive some immunity from their mothers at birth and through the mother cat’s milk. This immunity wears off slowly and kittens should be vaccinated against various diseases, beginning at 8 or 9 weeks of age. Your vet will guide you through this.

Also ask your vet about microchips – if your cat is chipped you are much more likely to be reunited with them should he or she go missing at any stage.

Whether you are getting a new kitten or an adult cat, make sure you prepare

a small room that will be his or her own for the first few days or weeks so they can explore at their own pace.

Place a litter box in the room also and keep food and water well away from the litter box. Cats are clean creatures and they are more likely to use a litter box that is cleaned regularly.

Place the carrier in a corner of the room and leave the door open and provide additional hiding places and a comfortable bed for them to sleep on.

Provide them with a scratching post or pad and when they use it praise them or reward them with cat treats. This may just help save your furniture from being destroyed by sharp little claws.

Make sure fresh food and water is provided daily. Good nutrition is very important for kittens, they need two to three times as many calories and nutrients than adult cats. Choose a premium brand kitten food with the AAFCO statement on the bag, start feeding them 3 meals a day before 6 months of age and you can then reduce feeds to twice a day thereafter.

Kittens are usually weaned by six weeks of age.

How you can tell if your cat is ill

Generally any change in your cat’s normal behaviour such as tiredness, change in appetite, weight loss or hiding in the house may indicate that your cat is ill.

Male cats that frequent the litter box and are unable to urinate should be seen by a vet immediately. This is also the case for cats that are having difficulty breathing, urgent attention will be required.

Other signs that your cat may be ill include increased drinking and or urination, bloody urine or urinating outside the litter box. Any vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, runny eyes, holding their eyes shut, sneezing, runny nose, bad breath, drooling, hiding or yowling are also signs of illness. And if you notice any lumps or bumps and limping, your cat should be checked by a vet too.

Socialise kittens early - handle them and play with them. Introduce them to other family pets gradually and only while supervised by you. Teach children how to hold and handle them, ensure they never pick the cat up by their feet or tail.

Start brushing their teeth gently with a cat brush and cat toothpaste, start doing this twice a week and aim for 3 times a week brushing long term.

Anzac poppiesThe Flanders poppy (Papaver rhoeas)

is our beloved ‘Anzac poppy’ also known as ‘soldier poppy’. Bright scarlet with a black spot in the base of each petal, it is at its most beautiful when sown generously for a beautiful meadow effect as seen in the fields of England and Europe.

Shirley poppiesColourful Shirley poppies are the

multi-toned offspring of Flanders poppy. Back in 1880, a wild seedling without

spots appeared in a vicarage garden at Shirley in Surrey, England. After 20 years of painstaking selection, the vicarage rector created a new strain, and that

Growing poppies for remembrance and colourPoppies are some of the prettiest flowers of winter and spring. In mild climates they are ideally sown in autumn. In coldest climates they are best sown in spring to avoid heavy frosts.

was the beginning of the Shirley poppies we still enjoy today. Shirley poppies are single or double in many shades of pink, red and white.

Iceland poppiesIceland poppies (Papaver nudicaule)

come in sunny shades of apricot and yellow with petals like crumpled silk. Pretty in a vase, the cup shaped flowers sit on long slender stems covered in silky hairs that glisten in the sun.

This is the cold hardiest of the poppies, often seen flowering in mid-winter, and are wonderful for mass planting. Modern breeding had given us strains with stronger stems and weather resistant flowers.

Oriental poppiesOriental poppies (Papaver orientale)

produce huge flower buds that open to spectacular double or single blooms up to 15cm wide with crumpled silken petals. The colour range includes reds, pinks, whites and lilacs. The plants grow strongly, up to 150cm tall.

In warm winter climates the plants are short lived but usually they will self sow and pop up the following year, although the seedlings hybrid varieties will not return true to type (i.e they will not look exactly like the parent plant). In colder climates poppies are hardy perennials although the foliage dies down in late summer. Attractive seed heads make excellent winter decoration.

Growing poppies

• Choose a sheltered sunny position with light well drained soil.

• Sow Flanders Poppies direct into well cultivated, cumbly garden soil, as they do not transplant well. Other poppies may be sown either directly as for Flanders poppies or in trays for later transplanting.

• Mix the very fine seed with sand prior to sowing for a more even spread.

• Cover with a bare minimum of seed raising mix.

• Keep the seed bed moist until germination, about 10 – 14days.

• For stronger plants and longer flowering, pinch out early buds to encourage a thick base.

• Liquid feed with a balanced fertiliser high in potassium.

• Protect young plants from birds and apply snail bait every couple of weeks.

• For a longer vase life trim stems to length and then singe the end in a flame.
