Justin Burnett / The RecordFreeland resident Keith Anderson walks through empty campgrounds at South Whidbey State Park on Tuesday. The grounds, which usually open May 1, were closed due to the presence of tree rot. It’s in enough trees to present a safety hazard to overnight campers, the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission has decided.
Campgrounds closed for good?Officials confirm park will transition to day-use only
By JUSTIN BURNETTSouth Whidbey Record
It appears the campground closure at South Whidbey State Park may be permanent.
Virginia Painter, spokeswoman for the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission, confirmed Tuesday that a site plan to be conducted later this year will specifically examine how to transition the camp-grounds to a day-use facility only. The nature of the
closure — internal tree rot of old-growth trees — isn’t something that can be easily fixed, leaving little choice but to look for alternatives, she said.

Emerson joins Langley mayoral race, primary loomsBy BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record Langley voters will decide a primary elec-
tion for at least the mayor’s office this fall. Sharon Emerson, a vocal critic of the
Langley funicular idea, jumped into the race Monday after being on the fence this past week. She joined a race that already had two challengers, Tim Callison and Thomas Gill,
to be the next mayor of Langley on the first day of Island County’s election filing week, which ends May 15.
Emerson said she was undecided through the past week and wanted to consider it thoughtfully before declaring if she would seek office.
“It’s a really serious thing to run for office, it’s a lot of responsibility,” Emerson said by
phone Monday. “I needed time to think about it to make sure I was ready to commit. I’m not a quitter.”
“I really care and want to do it,” she added. She and Callison are both new to public
elections. They are familiar with City Hall, however, and regularly attend city council meetings.
Both sought a city council appointment
along with Robin Black, who is married to Callison and was eventually picked to take over the vacated post, in 2014.
Callison said he chose to run for mayor because his experience as a corporate execu-tive lends itself well to managing personnel.

Nostalgia, laugh-ter compete when Clintonites bid fare-well to old hall Editor: Ace Comstock
Warm feelings of nostal-gia competed with tears of laughter Saturday night as Clinton residents bid a fond goodbye to the community hall which served the area for more than half a century.
The evening included a farewell program and dance held in the old hall, slated to be demolished in the near future.
During the program, com-munity members looked back at the history of the hall and held a mock wedding ceremony in commemora-tion of the marriage of Sylvan and Pearl Mackie, the first couple to be wed in the hall.
Sylvan Mackie played the bride and Eva Simmons played the bridegroom. Bill Peterson Sr. played the flower girl and nearly 10 other community members took on additional roles such as father of the bride and preacher.
Eva Simmons and Elsie Olkonen took part in telling the hall’s history. An original poem by Esther Moe brought back more memories, as did old-time favorite songs by Moe, A.G. Nordstrom and Levoy Hagglund.

Wilkinson residents now have auto body shop on undesirable neighbor list Editor: Jim Larsen
A group of Wilkinson Road residents may have thought they retired to the country for peace and quiet, but soon discovered the fallacy of their thinking.
After losing a battle to stop PRD (clustered housing) from being developed in their rural area, they are now gearing up to try and stop a neighbor from opening an auto rebuild business on his parcel.
County code dictates that a home industry that is com-patible with the surrounding area may be allowed as a conditional use in the rural residential zone.
Ann and Tom Campbell, who live next door, do not feel that an auto rebuild business is compatible with country liv-ing, even if it is on 10 acres.
The Campbells filed an appeal with the planning department stating that the “home industry” that was administratively approved by Planning Director Larry Kwarsick is beyond “home industry” and should be con-fined to a commercial area.
Ray Edwards, the auto rebuild shop owner, is also appealing a decision by the planning department which stated all of the vehicles must be kept inside the large garage he built. No ruling has been handed down yet.

Young people on South Whidbey who lack per-manent housing now have access to additional services from Ryan’s House for Youth thanks in part to a new, larger location.
The organization was pre-viously located in a small office on Scott Road in Freeland from which it relo-cated in January.
Though the move wasn’t far, as the new office is locat-ed just next door to the for-mer, the change has been significant, according to Lori Cavender, executive direc-tor. The new office is about three times the size of their former space, she explained, and was granted to them by a “generous” landlord at Lewis Properties.
“This has been a huge gift,” Cavender said.
The community is invited to visit the new space and learn more about the orga-nization’s services during an open house from 5-7 p.m. Monday, May 18 at 1832 Scott Road in Freeland.
Ryan’s House for Youth is a non-profit organization on South Whidbey which sup-ports young people who lack permanent housing.
Cavender said the orga-nization has assisted about 50 young people within the last year, either through their host family program or
through drop-in services. It was founded in 2009 in
order to address the needs of teens who were struggling to complete high school or vocational courses while liv-ing in cars, in the woods or on friends’ couches, accord-ing to a recent news release.
The organization’s new space includes a room stocked full of various cloth-ing items in every size, from undergarments to shoes and coats to prom dresses.
“That’s probably the thing we’re most proud of,” Cavender said.
Previously, they often had to stack piles of clothes in the walkway or on the one small couch.
Just beyond the clothing
area lies a bathroom where students are provided with all of the necessary toiletries to wash up. Students can drop off laundry as well.
Ryan’s House also offers coffee, tea, water bottles and “quick foods” such as gra-nola bars, as well as canned and boxed goods that stu-dents can take on their way out. Backpacks, sleeping bags and yoga mats are available as well. The latter aren’t for exercise, Cavender explained, but for keeping dry while sleeping in the woods.
Cavender said there are approximately six students currently sleeping in the woods that Ryan’s House staff are aware of.
Futons and a large section-al couch provide a safe rest-ing space for those in need of a few hours’ shuteye.
“A lot of times when kids are homeless … they don’t get a good night’s sleep so they come here very tired during the day,” caseworker Dustin Hamren said.
“It’s a great space to be able to invite kids in and allow them to relax. When the kids are out sleeping in the woods, they’re so overly tired and so cold,” Cavender added. “They really just need a place to regroup and know that there are people who care about them. That’s what we can do really well here.”
When students need a ride to appointments, Hamren or Cavender are able to accom-pany them.
In addition to the larger space, Cavender was able to hire Hamren as a full-time staff member. He’d previous-ly been working on a part-time volunteer basis.
Having Hamren on staff allows the two of them to assist multiple students simultaneously, Cavender said. She recalled a recent
instance in which she accom-panied a student to a meet-ing with the school while Hamren took another to an appointment in court.
The organization relies upon support from the com-munity and accepts dona-
tions of funds, age-appropri-ate clothing, school and toi-letry supplies, water bottles and non-perishable food. Volunteers are also always needed, according to a recent news release.

Information gleaned from input and feedback about Langley’s marina access project alternatives will be discussed by the Planning Advisory Board on May 13.
The board will get an update on the alternatives presented by Director of Community Planning Michael Davolio at its 3 p.m. Wednesday meet-ing. Langley hosted a workshop-style meeting
to inform the public about some of the options con-sidered by the city to bet-ter connect the commer-cial and residential core to the Port of South Whidbey Harbor marina and city waterfront. Some of the previously floated projects include the bridge and ele-vator dubbed the Langley Lift and the funicular.
The planning board will also review zoning ordi-nance update proposals, updated county planning policies, a revision of the urban growth area and other city project updates.
Planning Advisory Board meetings are held at Langley City Hall, 112
Second St., Langley.
Training off highway planned
South Whidbey Fire/EMS will conduct a live fire training exercise at a structure off Highway 525 in Freeland on Saturday, May 30.
According to a press release from the district’s public information officer, Jon Gabelein, the exercise is expected to last from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The site is located at 18488 Highway 525 in Freeland, south of Cameron Road and north of South Woodard Avenue.
The structure there will be set on fire so South Whidbey firefighters can practice fire extinguishing techniques in a live condi-tion.
All the necessary per-mits and approval was received, according to the release.
Residents may see smoke and fire during the
training exercise. Roadside reader boards will inform passers-by about the activ-ity, and people are allowed to observe the training but may not enter the prop-erty or obstruct traffic.
“South Whidbey Fire/EMS greatly appreciates the property owner’s and public’s support of this great training opportu-nity,” the release stated.
Questions about the training event may be asked of Deputy Chief Mike Cotton via email at [email protected] or 360-321-1533.

“It doesn’t go away, so it becomes a question of what to do next,” Painter said.
The state agency announced Friday that the campgrounds, nestled in the heart of the 347-acre old-growth park, had been deemed unsafe for overnight use due to the hazards of internal tree rot in the surrounding forest.
Parks staff became aware of the issue in mid April when they began preparing the campgrounds for its seasonal opening, May 1. Several large Douglas-fir trees in the campground had snapped and fallen across campsites.
The season runs through Sept. 15.
While the area remains open for day use, such as walking or picnicking at camp sites, the normally bustling campgrounds was a ghost town Tuesday
morning. The only person in that part of the park was Freeland resident Keith Anderson, who was there for his morning run on
the Beach Trail. He hadn’t heard about the closure, but said the state’s precau-tions seemed reasonable.
“I can see where the state needs to protect itself from liability, and getting sued for $100 million,” Anderson said.
He also supported the decision to keep the area open for day use, saying the risk for injury seems acceptable for all but over-night campers.
Whidbey Island resi-dent and park volunteer host Glenn Vallance, 90, was killed by a falling tree at the park in 2003. He was returning to his motorhome after grocery shopping in Freeland when a 136-foot fir tree fell on his truck, according to a story in the South Whidbey Record. A state park ranger was quoted in the story as saying the 250-year-old tree that hit Vallance’s car showed no signs of deterio-ration.
The state park is a busy place. During the past
fiscal year, June 1, 2013 to July 31, 2014, the park hosted 14,200 overnight campers, generating $97,500 in revenue. For cal-endar year 2014, the park saw a total visitor count of 42,600, which included day-time visitors.
According to Painter, the decision to close wasn’t made lightly. A specialist was consulted, who agreed a safety risk existed. The final decision was made last week; the agency stopped taking reserva-tions Monday, alerted the department’s online vendor of the closure on Wednesday and began notifying campers with reservations on Thursday. The media was notified late Friday morning.
At least two private
groups, Save the Trees and Friends of South Whidbey State Park, knew about the closure beforehand and sent out their own news releases or notifica-tions to members Friday morning. Painter said they were not informed by the agency’s communications department, but may have learned about the decision from park staff, she said.
The site plan creation process is expected to begin in late summer, early fall, Painter said. User groups may work with agency planners, and at least one public meeting is expected to be held. Dates have not yet been set.

ThanksFerry employees deserve praiseEditor,
There has been a lot of negative press about the ferry: late ferries, broken down ferries and lack of staff. I am writing to applaud and thank the ferry workers for helping me when I experienced an emergency.
I consider the ferry staff like my community; as a commuter, besides my husband, I see them more of them than I see anyone. For me to know them by name, to know that one of their kids went to the same graduate school as I, to know what bracelets they like, how their divorce is going, has the baby arrived
yet, oh-you are a leap year baby!
They are, well, like my friends.
And when I couldn’t talk and I was bleeding like a sieve they treated me like a queen. First on, first off, but it didn’t stop there. They came over to ask how I was while on the ferry, and for two weeks word traveled and every ferry worker asked me how I was. See, they are a fam-ily community too, and I felt so cared about. As one ferry person said to me when I thanked him, “We treat everyone as if they are special.” Well, that is exactly how I was treated and continue to be treated.
I thank all of you from the top, middle and bot-tom of my heart for your help in my recovery, for extending your ferry com-
munity to me, “just another commuter” who respects and appreciates you very much.

ResponseKeep county areas rural, quiet, calmEditor,
My wife and I moved to Whidbey from Bellevue over a year ago to enjoy the island’s peace and quiet, and to get away from the greed, the lack of concern for the environment and the misconception that more people coming into Bellevue meant a better life due to the growth and pros-perity.
Whidbey represented a non-urban lifestyle that we saw and appreciated.
A year later, however, we are seeing this same kind of Bellevue-esque type of transformation based on greed and personal moti-vation here on Whidbey. One example of this unnec-essary change is the pro-posed Langley Funicular elevator.
Other than some busi-ness owners who may or may not profit from the proposed elevator we will all have to contend with more people, more traf-fic, lack of parking, longer waiting lines in stores, the ferry traffic on both sides, and the perceived lack of respect and sensitivity for those who have chosen to live here year round. From the tourists point of view they will have already wait-
The Whidbey News Group’s annual Best of Whidbey Readers Choice Awards is off to a strong start.
For the next several weeks, we will be accepting votes online. We also published a paper ballot this past week for those who don’t have access to the Internet. The paper ballots turned in by the deadline will be combined with the online vote tallies.
Voting continues through May 30.We will announce the winners dur-
ing a Best of Whidbey luncheon we will host on July 29 at a time and loca-
tion to be announced later. We’ll also be publishing our popular Best of Whidbey special publication.
In addition to categories like Best Burger and Best Margarita, among the top awards we will be announcing are Business of the Year, Business Person of the Year and Best Community Leader.
This year, voting for the Best of Whidbey is easier and more fun than ever. We now offer a simpler, faster way to cast your vote for your favorites in a long slate of categories.
To vote online, log on to www.southwhidbeyrecord.com and click on the link in the upper right of the page that says, “Best of Whidbey— Click here to vote.”
The competition can be fierce in some categories, with some embarking on campaigns that rival the efforts of seasoned politi-cal candidates.
As they say, all is fair ...As I see it, the most important rule is to keep it fun. It’s accept-
able to have a spirited competition. Rally your friends, family and customers for support. Voting is absolutely free, and there’s no requirement that you subscribe or purchase anything.

ed two hours for a 15-minute ferry ride after having spent another hour or so on the freeway. Once in Clinton, as they are driving up the hill they see the off-island ferry line, meaning yet another two-hour wait for still anoth-er 15-minute ferry ride and then another one to two hours on the freeway. And they have yet to get out of their car.
In Langley they drive around and around com-peting for one of the lim-ited parking spots with other tourists and locals. Once acquired they finally get out of their car and tour quaint little Langley and come upon the proposed funicu-lar (whose presence has changed the vista). Another line to wait in without much purpose. The truth is that there is (thankfully) not much to see or do once you have taken the 30-second or so ride. You could have had an even better view of the vast beauty of an unaltered
vista from up top across the road from the Saratoga Inn. Then of course there will be the wait to take the ride back up the tracks. Wasted time, money and effort.
Please resist any further development and instead conserve Whidbey and Langley as it is for future generations. Avoid going down the slippery slope to the place where we would look back and wish things were the way they used to be. Be careful what you wish for.

READY TO MOVE?Whether buying or selling a
home, your moving date will be an important consideration. Also called the “possession date”, it is one of the items which is negotiated and included in the contract of sale.Possession dates are most
often established in relation to the “closing date”, the date on which the purchase money is paid and the title transfers to the purchasers. In a contract, the possession date may read “upon transfer of title and disbursement of funds”, or merely “at closing.”Is possession always given
at closing? Not necessarily. Remember, it is negotiable. It can be whatever date is acceptable to both buyers and sellers. The possession date may be
“fourteen days after closing” or “seven days prior to closing.” Notice that possession is still relative to the closing date.If possession occurs on any
date other than at closing, a short term lease agreement should be prepared. It should include the amount of any rent to be paid, what happens if the sale is not consummated, who is responsible for damage or needed repairs during the lease, etc.All agreements related
to possession should be in writing. Any changes made after the contract has been signed should also be reduced to writing and signed by all parties.

By BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record
The Falcons played three games’ worth of innings Saturday and left the 1A bi-district baseball tournament still in the fight after splitting two contests 9-6 and 1-0.
South Whidbey gutted its way through a 14-inning, four-hour contest against Overlake in the opening game that started at 10 a.m. and finished around 2 p.m. in Bellingham. South Whidbey won the game 9-6, packed up in a hurry, its players dispersed to grab a quick lunch, drove across town to the next field and waited a half hour to take on Meridian for a shot at an automatic state berth.
“It was a coaching nightmare,” said Falcon head coach Tom Fallon. Long games require a heavy pitch-ing rotation, a luxury South Whidbey hasn’t had as reliably as Fallon initially planned for before the season began. About three players have been regular starters: senior Mo Hamsa, junior Charlie Patterson and sophomore Will Simms.
A standard high school baseball game lasts seven innings, with extra innings added as needed until a team has a lead.
South Whidbey played without one of its stalwart seniors. Brent Piehler, who was the Falcons’ primary starting catcher and a power hitter, was ineligi-ble for the Overlake game after being ejected for a hard collision at home plate in a non-league game against Lynden earlier in the week.
Austin Sterba, a sophomore who played a few innings as catcher this season, took over the role as the last line of defense to his coach’s amaze-ment.
“There were a couple pop flies he
was diving for, just throwing his body around,” Fallon said.
In the first game, South Whidbey took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Falcons expanded it to a 3-0 lead in the fourth, only to have Overlake come back and score three runs on Simms, who started the game.
Ricky Muzzy, a junior, took the mound for Simms in the fifth inning. Most of the season, Muzzy has come in as the team’s closer in the fifth or sixth inning, relying on a mix of location and velocity. Against Overlake, Muzzy pitched six innings, which Fallon said was the most the Falcon junior and starting shortstop has thrown in high school.
After South Whidbey scored three runs to go ahead 6-3 in the 10th, Muzzy gave up three runs despite hav-ing two outs. Hamsa took over on the mound and pitched through the 13th inning without allowing a run.
Muzzy led off the 13th inning with a home run. Connor Antich, a sopho-more, was walked. Hamsa hit a single to move Antich into scoring position that set up Patterson’s RBI single, followed by a RBI single from Trent Fallon.
Patterson closed the game on the mound, putting on one batter with a walk before striking out the next three to win.
“It was an absolutely epic game,” Tom Fallon said.
Hurrying off the field to drive across Bellingham for their next
game, South Whidbey slogged its way against Meridian on the synthetic turf of Joe Martin Field.
Fallon noted that grounders were practically stopped in the infield because of the spring in the rubber
pellets. Meridian’s pitcher
shut down South Whidbey’s bats. The Falcons collected only three hits, tempered by only four strikeouts.
South Whidbey had a couple of chances to score, but both were ended by double plays.
“We just didn’t have anything left in the tank,” Fallon said. “We clawed and scratched as long as we could.”
Meridian got the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh. With Patterson on the mound, the Trojans led off with a walk that came around to score.
South Whidbey got a runner in scoring position after Brent Piehler reached second base. But the Falcons couldn’t bring him home to end the game 1-0.
“Stress baseball. It was 21 just tough, nail-bite innings,” Fallon said. “The luck kind of ran out there at the end of that game.”
Fallon gave the team the day off of practice Monday, allowing “everyone time to get away from baseball.” But he planned to resume Tuesday with a focus on hitting in anticipation of Saturday’s win-or-go-home game against University Prep at 12:30 p.m. May 16 at Sehome High School.
The winner will play either Cedar Park Christian or Overlake on the same field at 2:30 p.m.

South Whidbey won all the numbers battles in the 1A District 1 championship match against King’s, save for the final 1-0 score, an upset victory for the Knights.
The Cascade Conference’s top two 1A teams finished second and third overall in the league standings after South Whidbey won both head-to-head matches. Ready for a rematch with a state berth on the line, King’s played to a scoreless game as South Whidbey’s shots were off the mark.
As it had all season, South Whidbey fired off several shots on goal. But unlike the Falcons’ fortune in league play when they tallied 79 goals, the ball never found its way past King’s goalie Lars Helleren.
“It was a very tough loss,” said Falcon head coach Emerson “Skip” Robbins. “We absolutely outplayed them. We out-shot them. We controlled it. We couldn’t put it in the back of the net.”
“The opportunity was there, we just couldn’t take advan-tage,” he added.
Both teams played 80 scoreless minutes of regulation plus two five-minute “golden goal” periods, setting up a penalty kick shootout. Robbins praised Falcon senior goalie Charley Stelling for stopping one shot and nearly saving the first shootout goal that scraped the top of his outstretched fingers. But King’s won 4-3 after South Whidbey’s first shot by nor-mally sure-footed senior Jeff Meier barely missed the goal and senior Kameron Donohoe’s strike was saved by Helleren.
“Kam really hit it well,” Robbins said of Donohoe. “I don’t think he could have hit it much better.”
On Monday, Robbins said he took some of the blame for losing upon himself for not adjusting to the formation King’s employed. South Whidbey’s main striker, senior Kai da Rosa, was bottled up by the Knights’ strategy and unable to break free as he had in previous meetings.
South Whidbey now faces a loser-out scenario in the bi-dis-trict tournament. The Falcons will face the winner of a May 12 game between Seattle Academy and Sultan at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 14 at Sultan High School. South Whidbey has defeated Sultan three times this season by a combined 28-0, including a 3-0 win in the 1A District 1 tournament.
“We’re resilient,” Robbins said of the upset loss to King’s. “The bottom line is if you want to go all the way, you’ve got to beat every opponent along the path.”
“We’ll hopefully be ready,” he added.

He was not surprised to learn Emerson chose to run and said the three candi-dates are starkly different from one another.
“We’re about as separate as you can be,” Callison said. “We’re very distinctive in terms of our experience, education, exposure to the world at large.”
Gill is a city councilman and he previously sought to be appointed as mayor in 2013 before being voted in
unopposed that fall as a city councilman. The youngest of the three, Gill has been around city meetings for years after seeking a city council position in 2010 and not being elected. He joined the Planning Advisory Board before being voted onto the council.
“I know what the city’s already tried and didn’t work,” Gill said.
Not even 24 hours into his official campaign, Callison learned the sensitivities of being in the public eye when he sent out his announce-ment via an email to about 600 people. It upset about
15 of the recipients, at least one of whom questioned if he was using the email list of Mayor Fred McCarthy, who is not seeking re-election, for political purposes.
The list was open so recip-ients could see each others email addresses.
Callison denied that it was the mayor’s list, and said the email addresses were collect-ed over the past few weeks from various groups and notices he is part of, such as the Langley Men’s Club and Island Dance. Anyone who voiced issue with receiving the email and communicated that concern to Callison was removed from the “email blast,” he said.
“I know I compounded
the problem by copying all rather than blind copying,” Callison said in a phone interview Tuesday morning. “I apologize for that.”
Had the list come from the mayor, it may not have constituted a breach of state rules as the email addresses sent to the city become public documents and are subject to disclosure. Some complained, however, that it was a breach of privacy, and voiced concerns about being implicated as Callison supporters when they may not be.
Callison said he may
never use the email list again and instead resort to mailing flyers. The lesson was well learned, he said.
“I felt really bad, I didn’t sleep last night,” Callison said. “I’m heartsick about it.”
Robin Black, who was appointed to an unexpired
city council term in June 2014, also filed with the Island County elections office Monday. She is seek-ing to serve the remainder of a term that was vacated after Margot Jerome moved from Langley midway through 2014.

Recent headlines from Burundi paint a portrait of turmoil as citizens protest President Pierre Nkurunziza’s announce-ment to extend his time in office. Amidst the building violence and strife, a group of Burundi peace workers are actively attempting to facilitate communication and understanding amongst their fellow citizens.
In March 2014, Freeland resident Jeanne Strong trav-eled to Burundi and assisted the activists in their work.
Strong, like the Burundian peace workers, is a Quaker and proponent for peace and understanding between con-flicting groups. She is also an educator, and has traveled to Africa on seven separate occasions to assist with various projects including building schools and training fellow teachers.
Strong will discuss her most recent trip during a talk entitled “Lessons in Non-Violence from African Peace-builders.” The talk will take place from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, May 16 at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Freeland.
Though she had been planning the talk for several weeks, Strong said, she is thankful for the coincidental timeliness of the event.
In recent days, conditions on the streets of Burundi have steadily worsened.
Nkurunziza has served two consecutive terms and has announced his intention to extend his time in office for a third. Many say his
actions are unconstitutional, and argue that he is the cause of much of the nation’s trouble. Citizens are demand-ing a free election.
The European Union and Belgium have suspended financial assistance to the small Central African coun-try because of the govern-ment’s violent response to citizens’ opposition of the president.
Strong said she has received correspondence from friends in the area who say roads are blocked and it is increasingly unsafe to go outdoors.
According to the United Nations refugee agency, 50,000 Burundians have fled to Rwanda and other neigh-boring countries.
Prior to these recent devel-opments, Strong said the country was still entrenched in the process of attempting to heal from trauma such as the 1994 genocide and asso-
ciated civil war. The civil war lasted until 2005.
Strong worked alongside workers for a program called Healing and Rebuilding Our Community (HROC). The program is connected with the African Great Lakes Initiative, which was devel-oped by the Friends Peace Teams.
Africa is home to more Quakers than anywhere else in the world, Strong said.
The HROC philosophy is in tune with Quaker principles, Strong said. In everyone, there is something good; each person has the inner capacity to be good; both perpetrators and victims of violence suffer as a result of violence; and healing from trauma must be done both
individually and as a part of a community.
Strong and cohorts such as Healing and Rebuilding Our Communities (HROC) founder Adrien Niyongabo are firm believers in the notion that, rather than find-ing a way to peace, peace is the way.
Strong worked with HROC to help lead a three-day retreat with 28 women, many of whom were teach-ers, and several children. She also helped to facilitate group sharing and trust walks, in which half of the participants were blindfolded and led by a partner. She also developed a curriculum for teachers to continue to work with students toward healing and understanding.
After the training, Strong said that many of the educa-tors expressed a powerful degree of change and heal-ing.
One in particular wrote that she had previously been suicidal, having felt nothing but grief and pain since 1993. She had felt that God had abandoned her. Realizing that others had sustained similar psychological wounds helped her to heal, she said.
Another said that HROC training had led her to real-ize the impact of political strife and the community’s suffering on the children.
Strong noted that the scars of genocide and war are still visible across Burundi. A memorial which reads “never again” in French sits at the site of a former school where 300 Tutsi students were burned to death.
When teachers returned
to the classroom after train-ing, they instructed children to draw a picture, either of something hurtful or of something they were grate-ful for.
All of the students drew scenes of war, Strong said. One in particular illustrated his sister’s suicide.
“That’s pretty amazing for a 13-year-old to say, ‘My sister hung herself because she didn’t want to be raped,’ ” Strong said.
One of the most significant lessons Strong learned while in Burundi was the power of forgiveness.
“Forgiveness has almost become a part of the culture in a way that really was mov-ing for me,” Strong said of the Burundi people.
She also recognized how much both perpetrators and victims suffer from violent acts, and witnessed the importance of allowing each individual a space to share their story.
“You can’t hate someone if you know their story,” Strong said.
HROC has nearly 100 facilitators in Burundi as well as several in neighboring Rwanda.
“These remarkable people in this time right now are standing strong and are will-ing to put their lives on the line for what they believe,” Strong said, adding that she hopes their active presence will avert another civil war.
“It’s so tragic that the people themselves only want peace,” Strong said. “The power-hungry government officials are destabilizing what the people want.”
