NEWS briefs

The West Melton restrictions were in place due to Environment Canterbury restrictions on ground water take for bores supplying the town.

"Ground water levels are now recovering in West Melton, allowing the restrictions to be lifted," Selwyn District Council's water services asset manager Murray England said.

Watering restrictions have also been lifted for Springfield. Restrictions were in place as the town is supplied by treated water from the Kowai River and the river was experiencing low flows due to weather conditions.

“River levels have now risen, enabling the restrictions to be lifted,” Mr England said.

“The lifting of restrictions means that lawns and gardens may be watered at any time, however, council still encourages property owners to water lawns and gardens after 9pm and before 6am as this is the time of lowest water use and also provides the best opportunity for water to soak into the ground.

"We would like to thank West Melton and Springfield residents for their assistance in observing the restrictions while they were in place."

The increase is part of an $85.8 million boost over four years for targeted increases in tuition rates at degree level and above, which also includes a 7.5 percent increase for science.

Lincoln University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor of international and business development Jeremy Baker described the announcement as a recognition of the vital role agriculture plays in the New Zealand economy, and for institutions like Lincoln University, with its specific land-based focus, in providing world-class graduates to meet the growing demand in the sector for highly-trained workers.

“It shows the area is a priority for the Government and for New Zealand, as it needs to be.”

He also praised the extra funding for science as it is complementary with agricultural studies in many of the programmes being offered at the university.

“The extra funding will allow for extra investment in the scientific intensity of

“We certainly have had our work cut out over the summer and are super excited about the most extensive developments ever in Porters’ history, with the total cost close to $7 million,” Porters marketing manager Dan Walbeoff said.

A brand new Doppelmayr fixed grip quad chairlift has been installed on a new alignment on the south side of the valley.

“No longer is there a T-bar cutting the run in half and the new chairlift can carry up to 2000 people an hour,” Mr Walbeoff said.

However, the $4.5 million chairlift is not the only changes skiers and boarders will see on the field this winter.

Large scale earthworks over the summer has seen over 65000 cubic metres of material moved to improve the ski area terrain and facilities. A new beginner’s area has been created adjacent to the existing intermediate lift.

“The summer’s earthworks have opened this terrain up to provide a clear open slope that gives a great flow to our main run. Our recently upgraded snowmaking system will help to maintain a consistent cover and quality of snow.”

Another significant change is the development of a new electric power generation system which Mr Walbeoff

said is both more efficient and environmentally sound.

“All lifts except the two upper T-Bars will be electrical, driven from a new power plant installed down the valley. There will be no more noise from diesel engines in the base area.”

outside the cafeteria has been doubled in size incorporating a new food outlet offering gourmet hotdogs and cold drinks while the field’s rental department has been fully refurbished and stocked with new hire equipment.

“All these improvements have been put in place to make the whole

experience at Porters easier and more pleasant,” Mr Walbeoff said.

Porters, which has pencilled in an opening date of June 19, will also continue with its complimentary shuttle service from the chain fitting area on days when chains are required.

Ryder stepped up to the tee and beat Russley Gold’s number one Rory Williamson on the first playoff hole to send Weedons into the final that afternoon against Russley Blue, which had beaten Russley White in the other semi.

Again nothing could separate the two teams in the finals with the score tied at 2-2 after the four games meaning another playoff was required to decide the winner.

This time a great birdie on the second playoff hole saw Ryder win the match and the title for the Weedons team.

… continued from front page

“It was a great result for the boys especially as they were given little chance by many against the stronger Russley teams,” Hallinan said.

He said the Weedons club has a growing junior contingent with junior coaching available on Saturday afternoons under the guidance of Tudor Olsen.

“Some of our juniors have gone on to represent Canterbury at a senior level and this Canterbury title is a reflection of the quality of golfers being produced by our junior programme.”

The players, from left, Ellen Walters, Ty Orsbourn, Tim Marshall, Alex Orsbourn and Shannon Roydhouse will be part of the ball crew for the Christchurch matches of the tournament. The city will host nine matches including a semi-final and fixtures featuring world powerhouses Germany and Brazil. In the past it has featured some of the biggest names in world football including Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi, Ronaldinho and Michael Owen.

The group comes under the umbrella of the very successful Lincoln Envirotown which organises activities or talks on issues relating to sustainability and the environment.

Malvern Enviro has just launched an online survey to get feedback from locals on what they would like to learn more about or activities they would like to take part in.

“Part of our aim at Lincoln Envirotown is to encourage other people in Selwyn to form their own groups to determine what issues they would like to know more about and projects they would like undertaken in their area,” Lincoln

The Malvern Enviro group wants to know what environmental projects local residents would like to be involved in.

Envirotown project manager Dave Fitzjohn said.

“We recently held a well-attended meeting in Darfield in which we had a guest speaker talking about living off the grid.”

He said Lincoln Envirotown is not about setting the agenda when it comes to other groups in the district but wants local groups to come up with their own agendas.

“That way we know what is important to the people of that area and then we can help facilitate meetings or organise events which are relevant to them.”

He said the survey would enable the

Mr Fitzjohn said they will discuss the results of the survey at their June meeting and the information they gather will be used to help put together a programme for Malven Enviro.

West Melton Primary School students Daniel Lloyd, with blindfold, and Ryan Dachs, taking part in a 'Meet a Tree' activity at the Kowhai Reserve Sanctuary on Thompsons Road attended by the school’s Eco Warriors group. In this exercise one student leads another to a tree or bush which they feel and then have to identify once the blindfold was removed. The session was part of the Enviro Schools programme and students spent the afternoon discovering the Sanctuary, looking for certain type of insects and making some original 'nature' art. On June 4 the Eco Warriors will lead the Pukeko Team of Year 3 and 4 pupils on a planting day at the Sanctuary as part of the school’s Arbor Day celebrations.

The McEwins are boarding on a rural property on Old West Coast Road near West Melton and this month Stephanie’s works are a feature of the latest Malvern Community Arts Council exhibition at the Selwyn Gallery in Darfield.

“We were living in Sumner at the time of the February quake and our house was almost totally cut off,” Stephanie says.

“We had a small window of opportunity to get our belongings out and as we were on the lower slopes we knew that we were unlikely to go back there due to the possibility of further rock falls.”

She says they were fortunate to find someone who would take them in and allow her to continue her work.

“It really has proved to be a place of recovery.”

In 2014 Stephanie was named the winner of the Christchurch Art Show Award and is a finalist again this year.

It has also allowed Stephanie the time to pursue her aim of completing an arts degree at Canterbury University, a goal inspired by her Grandmother.

“Grandma spent two years at university back in the 1920s but never completed her degree, probably because her family believed it was more appropriate for a young woman to pursue a more domesticated career.”

Stephanie said among her Grandmother’s classmates at university were women who would become icons of New Zealand painting such as Evelyn Page, Rata Lovell-Smith and Olivia Spencer Bower.

She also had a sketch book her

Selwyn sanctuary for talented artistu by Kent Caddick

Selwyn is proving to be place of sanctuary for painter Stephanie McEwin as she and her husband recover from the disruption caused to their lives by the Christchurch earthquakes.

Grandmother left her and that has also proven an inspiration.

“My interest in art began when I was very young, probably around the age of 10, but I was never encouraged to pursue it as a career even though I got top marks in School Certificate art at high school.”

Undaunted she continued to develop her craft principally through being self-taught and working as a graphic artist at a time when many department stores had their own art departments. Eventually she gained recognition as an emerging artist as well as some commercial success with her work.

Then in her early 50s she says she had a ‘light bulb’ moment.

“I was running a studio gallery in Poplar Lane before the September 2010 earthquake and had been contemplating what I wanted to do next. I was driving along and saw a billboard encouraging people to enrol at Canterbury University and it hit me that was what I needed to do.

“Part of me wanted to do it for my Grandmother who was unable to finish her academic pursuit.”

This year Stephanie, a figurative painter, is in her fourth and final year at Canterbury University completing her master’s degree and is now contemplating her next move.

“I am applying for scholarships for an artist in residence and would very much like to secure one in Varanassi in India, a place I have visited before. Then do the same back in New Zealand in a place like McCahon House.”

Figurative painter Stephanie McEwin says Selwyn has been a place of recovery as well as a providing a nurturing environment for her work.

Do you want to save time, money and water?

CattleMany lifestyle block farmers choose to raise beef cattle. Dairy cows generally require a large amount of work, and it is rarely worth the effort, financially speaking. Beef cattle are relatively low-maintenance. They do need to be regularly drenched for parasites, which you can be done by the farmer or a vet.Cattle can be bought as calves or weaners. Calves require daily feeding and regular care until they are weaned.Cows take up a lot of space; ensure that you have enough pasture to feed them through the winter, or purchase feed.

Choosing the right lifestyle block animal u by Jamie Small

Picking animals for your lifestyle block is very important as the livestock you choose, can make a major impact on your life – for better or for worse.

SheepA Kiwi classic, sheep are small, docile and generally trouble-free, although they do require a lot of maintenance.Sheep need to be dipped for external parasites and drenched for internal ones. They can be susceptible to diseases such as footrot and flystrike, but vigilant care will prevent this. Sheep also need to be shorn , either by the farmer or a professional shearer. They also need to be regularly checked during lambing. Sheep are efficient feeders and require relatively little space compared to larger livestock: a minimum of one acre per five sheep.

PigsPigs are a popular choice for lifestyle blocks. They can be kept in a herd or as pets. Contrary to popular belief, well looked-after pigs won’t be messy or smelly. They will get rid of your food scraps and they breed regularly, which means that they can be a steady form of income.Pigs can be kept in an enclosure as small as 7 square metres per pig, but the bigger the pen, the happier the pigs.

GoatsGoats can be farmed for meat, milk or wool. They require shelter and a lot of care. Goats love stimulating environments and will climb on anything that you put in their paddock. They will also go to extreme lengths to eat your trees and garden plants, so make sure they are securely enclosed.

Alpacas are growing in popularity with lifestyle block owners.

AlpacasAlpaca farming is becoming more and more popular. Alpacas make great pets. Like sheep, they do require regular care. One acre of land can sustain up to six alpacas.

ChickensChickens are a very popular choice for lifestyle blockers who want fresh eggs on the table and a regular supply of eggs to sell. They require a dedicated shelter (coop) and they love to have the freedom to wander around outside. They can be kept in an enclosed run or allowed to wander the property, as they usually won’t stray far from the coop.

At the recent Canterbury Wine Awards the Melton Estate 2013 Chardonnay was named as the perfect wine match for a chicken dish.

Chardonnay is one of the most popular and versatile wines in the world. Elegant and fruit-driven, the classic New Zealand Chardonnay is mouth- filling, with concentrated citrus and tropical fruit. A crisp acidity balances the flavours, which are often perfectly rounded with oak.

Its versatility makes Chardonnay a perfect canvas for viticulturists and winemakers eager to craft a masterpiece. A range of Chardonnays are produced in New Zealand from fruit-driven, unoaked styles to concentrated Burgundian styles. A young or unoaked Chardonnay is also fabulous with seafood.

Mature New Zealand Chardonnays are richer and more complex with stronger toast and nut flavours. They complement full flavoured savoury dishes such as chicken, veal and rabbit with creamy, garlic or lemon flavoured sauces. The creamy, fruit-driven flavours of mature New Zealand Chardonnay are sublime alongside a dessert of poached pears.

Chardonnay and chicken a perfect matchu by Tracy Caunter, Melton Estate

With each chicken breast make a pocket in the side and place a spoon of cream cheese mix in side. Then wrap a slice of prosciutto around the chicken breast.

A Chicken Ballotine dish is complemented by a versatile wine like Melton Estate 2013 Chardonnay.

Place chicken breast on cling film and roll up tight like a Christmas cracker. Rest in fridge over night or for a couple of hours and this will hold the shape.

Take out of cling film and pan sear in olive oil to colour then transfer to a 180c oven for 20 to 25 minutes.

It will depend on how large your breasts are or if you have a thermometer then until the temperature reaches 75c. Rest chicken for 10 minutes before cutting.

EECA technical adviser Christian Hoerning says it’s important not to scrimp on heating because living in a cold, damp house can cause respiratory and other illnesses.

However, Mr Hoerning says many households can save on their hot water bills without compromising comfort.

He suggests running a bucket test to find out if you can cut your hot water use.

“Turn the shower on to a comfortable hot temperature. If the shower fills a 10 litre bucket in less than a minute, it's wasting water, energy and money.

“If the shower fills the bucket in only 40 seconds, a family of four could save about $500 a year on their electricity bills.”

Mr Hoerning says you can replace your shower head for one with a more efficient flow rate of 9 litres a minute or less or you can install an inexpensive shower flow restrictor to your existing shower (9 litres a minute or less.

“An efficient shower head gives you a great shower – we are not suggesting

you shower in a trickle of water.”If people in your house have 20

minute showers, you might want to look at the maths, according to Mr Hoerning.

“In a household of four, each minute you add to your shower time is about $100 a year.”

Washing your clothes in cold water will also save you money. Mr Hoerning calculates that at four loads a week, cold water washes could save you around $55 to $80 each year.

He says shopping around for an energy supplier which best meets your needs is another way you can greatly reduce your energy costs.

“The What’s My Number website is a free and independent tool which allows you to do just that.”

Last winter New Zealanders visited the What’s My Number website more than 60,000 times, with the national average for estimated savings identified by the site coming in at $175 annually, and with many families saving up to $500. We are a grassroots organisation founded in 2010 by a handful of parents in Selwyn and have grown to be a registered charity since 2012. Today we are still lead by a handful of volunteer parents. What we do

SPN put on low or no cost fun events that the whole family/whanau can enjoy together and we connect parent’s with supportive people and organisations. We provide learning opportunities from new experiences, new information and from parent to parent.

We value the wisdom gained from raising children by listening to parent’s ideas for change and supporting them to make it happen.

We work collaboratively with other people and organisations and support the development of local community parenting support in the wider Selwyn district where ever possible.

There are wonderful opportunities and group’s right here in Selwyn for families and we understand that parents don’t always know where to go. We also recognise that a lot of organisations although not based in Selwyn do a lot of work here so it’s great being able to connect people to them.

The SPN website gets updated with links to other groups’ and organisations’

activities and services as information comes to hand. This is a great way to share information and to support the great opportunities that there are for families’ right here in Selwyn.

Regular sharing also happens by way of the SPN Facebook page and in the monthly email newsletter of upcoming activities and events we know of throughout Selwyn.

Here are some of the activities and events SPN currently organises (these are based on what parents tell us they need): a Children’s Day Celebration event in Selwyn, Kidsfest Activities in the July school holidays in Selwyn and an October Family Fun Day. Educative speakers are also offered such as the upcoming talks on Family Nutrition in July.

SPN can only ever offer services based on resourcing and capacity available. Our recent activities have been made possible by the support of funding from organisations such as Community Organisation Grants Board, The Lottery Grants Board, The Tindall Foundation, The Canterbury Community Trust, The Warehouse, Selwyn District Council Events Fund.

SPN is also currently working with other community groups and co-ordinating a Strategies with Kids, Information Parents (S.K.I.P) initiative,

which asks parents what it’s like to be a parent of a 0-5 year old in Rolleston and what could be designed to support them. This has been made possible through funding from the Ministry of Social Development.

There are many ways of keeping your plants safe from these pests. Some are a guaranteed success, others have been tried and tested and shown to be mostly reliable and some are hit and miss at best.

Personally I don’t want to risk my crop on something that may not work, so I always reach for the little blue pellets – namely Yates Blitzem. To prevent the chickens or other animals from eating them or my seedlings, I put wire netting around my crop.

If you are concerned about other creatures, put pellets in an upturned ice cream container with little doorways cut into it and remove the dead snail bodies first thing each morning. There are also pellets available that are safe for pets and wildlife.

If you want to try something more natural, there are alternative methods that have varying degrees of success.

• Hunting and gathering: This is best done at night with a torch as this is when slugs and snails are most active. Depending on how brave you are determines what you do with them once you catch them. If you aren’t too squeamish you can squish them quickly and firmly so they don’t see it coming; or you can take them somewhere else. I wouldn’t recommend over the fence as the neighbours won’t be pleased and I

Dealing with those pesky garden pestsSlugs and snails must be the most despicable garden pests and a major threat to young seedlings.

have heard of a study where the snails were marked and taken away from the garden at varying distances and many actually came back. Chickens also love slugs for breakfast.

• Planking: Put a plank down in the garden for them to hide under after a hard night of eating your plants and all you need to do is lift the plank in the morning and pick them off and dispose of them as you will.

• Beer: Slugs and snails love a good party and are drawn to beer like moths to a flame. Take an old margarine container and bury it in your garden so it is level with the surface and fill it with beer and wait. In the morning the container will be filled with so many drowned slugs that seems like the party had been advertised on Facebook!

• Crushed eggshells: This is a very common technique as the theory is the slugs and snail’s soft bellies get all torn up on the sharp edges and they don’t like the way it feels, however I have seen pictures of snails crawling over razor blades so I’m not completely convinced about this one.

• Copper: By wrapping a 5cm strip of copper around your pot, raised bed or plant, when the slug and snail slime comes in contact with the copper an electrical charge is created and they

get a zap. This appears to have mixed results as once the copper oxidises it isn’t as effective and slugs and snails are quite cunning and will find a way around or over it.

• Salt: Sprinkling salt about can kill them quickly, however use it sparingly as you can make your soil hostile for your plants.

• Coffee grounds: Many people swear by coffee grounds as a way of deterring slugs and snails, and caffeine has proven to be toxic to them, however there is uncertainty how effective this actually is with used coffee grounds.

They do make fabulous mulch and will make your plants happy if they survive being eaten.

• Wool: The latest thing overseas for keeping slugs away is sheep wool pellets that apparently irritate the slug and have the added benefit of providing slow release nutrients to the growing plants.

Whatever method you chose, it is most satisfying to see your plants grow and give you beautiful flowers or something delicious to eat. Don’t let these pests prevent you from reaping the rewards of your hard work in the garden.
