Fifth Sunday of Lent (Cycle A) A Sunday Reflection

“Master, the one you love is ill,” is the beginning of this Sunday’s Gospel. We don’t understand, it is difficult to understand, what use is suffering and why God allows it. Lazarus will die before Jesus arrives. However, the gospel tells us that this illness is “for the glory of God.”

Before Lazarus’s tomb, the Lord is moved to tears. He, the victor over death, who has just proclaimed himself the Resurrection and the Life, weeps and shares in Martha’s and Mary’s sorrow for their brother, his friend who has died. And then, he will raise him up: “Untie him and let him go.”

We also need to be untied by Jesus, to be freed from the bonds of sin, free from all that keeps us apart from Him so that we may share in the resurrection that is promised to those who believe in Him.

As we face the fears provoked by the current coronavirus pandemic, let us place our hope in Jesus, Who raised Lazarus, that we be spared of illness and that those who suffer may recover soon. God bless you.

Reflexión Dominical “Señor, el que amas está enfermo”. Así comienza el Evangelio de

este domingo. No entendemos, nos cuesta entender, de qué sirve el sufrimiento y por qué Dios lo permite. Lázaro morirá antes de que Jesús llegue; sin embargo, dice el evangelio que esta enfermedad es “para gloria de Dios”.

Ante la tumba de Lázaro el Señor, conmovido, llora. El vencedor de la muerte, que acaba de proclamarse Resurrección y Vida, llora y comparte el dolor de Marta y María por su hermano, el amigo muerto. Luego lo resucitará: “Desátenlo y déjenlo andar”.

Nosotros también necesitamos que Jesús nos desate, que nos libre de las ligaduras del pecado, de todo lo que nos aleja de Él, para que podamos participar de la resurrección prometida a los que creen en Él.

Ante el miedo provocado por la actual pandemia del coronavirus, pongamos nuestra esperanza en Jesús, que resucitó a Lázaro, y que Él nos libre de la enfermedad y dé pronta sanación a los que la padecen. Que Dios los bendiga.

MIAMI In cooperation with efforts to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the Archdiocese of Miami announces the suspension, effective today, March 18, of all regularly scheduled celebrations of Masses or other liturgical events in parish churches and other public sanctuaries. Also, any parish or ministry events — e.g. prayer groups, Bible studies, etc. — are also suspended or postponed.

Funerals, or other events that perhaps cannot be postponed — e.g. baptisms or weddings — may be celebrated with immediate family members only who are not sick and are not advised by their doctors to self-isolate. Appropriate social distancing should be observed.

While these gatherings of the faithful are suspended, the parishes remain “open.” Priests who are otherwise not impeded are expected to celebrate daily Mass for the intentions of the faithful albeit without their presence. Also, priests and other parish staff who are not sick or otherwise advised to self-isolate, while exercising prudence and observing social distancing, will be available to the faithful at the parish offices.

While there will be priests who need to self-isolate because of age, underlying physical condition, or illness, parishioners should be able to communicate with a priest, deacon or available staff by phone or by email. If a priest is not able to respond to a pastoral need (e.g. a sick call, request for confession, etc.) because of illness, age or underlying health condition, he or a member of his staff will assist the parishioner in locating a priest who can. Priests will respond to calls from a hospital or other health facility and will cooperate with that hospital or facility by following proper protocols as required (wearing of masks, gloves, protective clothing, etc.)

Parishes are encouraged to “livestream,” where possible, Masses that priests celebrate without a congregation. Also, priests are encouraged to post in print form and/or by video on the parish website or parish social media platform their homilies and other devotions (e.g. the rosary). To maintain communication with parishioners, churches should continue to publish on their website a weekly bulletin.

“These efforts will enable the faithful to continue to remain close to the Lord and the Church in this challenging time, while protecting one another and the community against COVID-19,” said Archbishop Thomas Wenski.

The archdiocesan website will list parishes and links that livestream Masses and other devotions and will update the list as needed. Radio Paz, the Archdiocese of Miami’s Catholic radio station, will continue to broadcast 24/7 in Spanish at 830 AM. Relevant Radio, available at 880 AM and 1080 AM, provides Catholic programing in English also 24/7. A locally produced Haitian Creole program is also presented on Relevant Radio on Saturdays at 2 p.m.

Why Cover the Crucifix?

IT SEEMS STRANGE that during the most sacred time of year we cover everything … in our churches, even the crucifix. [Yet] the Church recommends this practice [of covering images and the crucifix from the 5th Sunday of Lent until the Easter Vigil] to heighten our senses and build within us a longing for Easter Sunday. But why go through such lengths to cover up images that are designed to raise our hearts and minds toward heaven? First of all, we use veils to alert us of the special time that we are in. These veils are a forceful reminder to get ready [for the Sacred Triduum]. Secondly, the veils focus our attention on the words being said at Mass [during the reading of the Passion]. Our senses … focus on the striking words from the Gospel and truly enter into the scene. Third, the Church uses veils to produce a heightened sense of anticipation for Easter Sunday. And therein lies the whole point: the veils are not meant to be there forever. The unveiling before the Easter Vigil is a great reminder of our own life on earth. We live in a “veiled” world, in exile from our true home. It is only through our own death that the veil is lifted and we are finally able to see the beauty of everything in our lives.

¿Por qué cubrir el Crucifijo?

NOS PARECE EXTRAÑO que durante el tiempo más sagrado del año cubrimos todas las imágenes en nuestras iglesias, hasta el Crucifijo. Sin embargo, la Iglesia recomienda esta práctica [de cubrir las imágenes y el Crucifijo desde el 5o Domingo de Cuaresma hasta la Vigilia Pascual] para alertar nuestros sentidos y hacer que anhelemos la llegada de la Pascua. Pero ¿por qué trabajar para cubrir imágenes que deben levantar nuestro corazón hacia el cielo? Primero que nada, usamos velos para recordar que estamos en un tiempo especial. Estos velos nos recuerdan con fuerza que debemos prepararnos para el Santo Triduo. Segundo, los velos sirven para enfocar nuestra atención en lo que escuchamos durante la lectura de la Pasión. Nuestros sentidos se enfocan en la narración evangélica y podemos entrar verdaderamente en la escena presentada. Tercero, la Iglesia usa los velos para despertar nuestra anticipación por el Domingo de Pascua. Y ese es el punto: ¡los velos no van a estar puestos siempre! El develar las imágenes en la Vigilia Pascual es un poderoso recordatorio de lo que es nuestra vida en esta tierra. Vivimos en un mundo “velado”, exiliados de nuestra verdadera patria. Solo a través de nuestra muerte se levanta el velo y podemos contemplar por fin la belleza de nuestra vida.

A message from the Apostolic Penitentiary on March 20 announces the granting of special indulgences for the victims of COVID-19, as well as those in quarantine, health care workers, family members and all those who, following the example of the Good Samaritan, exposing themselves to the risk of contagion, care for the sick of Coronavirus. To obtain a plenary indulgence, they may simply recite the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer and a pious invocation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, offering this trial in a spirit of faith in God and charity towards their brothers and sisters. All the faithful can receive a plenary indulgence with the same conditions when they “offer a visit to the Blessed Sacrament, or Eucharistic adoration, or reading the Holy Scriptures for at least half an hour, or the recitation of the Holy Rosary, or the pious exercise of the Way of the Cross, or the recitation of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, to implore from Almighty God the end of the epidemic, relief for those who are afflicted and eternal salvation for those whom the Lord has called to Himself.” El papa Francisco ha autorizado un decreto de la Penitenciaria Apostólica del Vaticano, publicado el 20 de marzo de 2020, en el que concede “indulgencias especiales” a los fieles afectados por la enfermedad del Covid-19, a los trabajadores de la salud, a los familiares y a todos aquellos que, incluso con la oración, cuidan de ellos. The Blesseds /Los Beatos BLESSED LUCIEN BOTOVASOA (1908-1947) — A native of Madagascar, he was baptized and received his First Holy

Communion at the age of 14. Soon after he was able to transfer to the Jesuit College of St. Joseph, where he

completed his schooling and was awarded a teaching certification.

Lucien had a natural gift for teaching. In 1930, he married Suzanna Soazana, and they had five children.

He learned to speak Chinese, German, and French and was a musician who had a great singing voice.

When political unrest against French colonial rule exploded in 1946, Catholics became viewed as French loyalists, and

officials throughout the country began turning against them. Aware of the political situation, Lucien told his wife and

children, “Whatever happens, do not EVER separate yourself from God. I am not afraid of death.” On April 14, 1947, he was brought before

the local chieftain for trial and executed. Sadly, his executioners were all former students. Lucien forgave them all and then was beheaded. Pope Francis declared that

Lucien had died “in odium fidei” and he was beatified in 2018.

BEATO LUCIEN BOTOVASOA (1908-1947) — Oriundo de Madagascar, fue bautizado a los 14 años y recibió su Primera Comunión. Poco después pudo pasar al colegio jesuita de San José, donde concluyó sus estudios y recibió el certificado de maestro.

Lucien tenía un don natural para la enseñanza. En 1930 contrajo matrimonio con Suzanna Soazana y tuvieron cinco hijos. Aprendió chino, alemán y francés y era un músico con excelente voz.

Al comenzar la revuelta contra el colonialismo francés en 1946, los católicos fueron señalados como leales a Francia y los funcionarios locales se volvieron contra ellos. Lenten Message 2020 “We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God” (2 Cor 5:20)

Putting the paschal mystery at the centre of our lives means feeling compassion towards the wounds of the

crucified Christ present in the many innocent victims of wars, in attacks on life, from that of the unborn to that of

the elderly, and various forms of violence. They are likewise present in environmental disasters, the unequal

distribution of the earth’s goods, human trafficking in all its forms, and the unbridled thirst for profit, which is a form of

idolatry.

Today too, there is a need to appeal to men and women of good will to share, by almsgiving, their goods with those most in need, as a means of personally

participating in the building of a better world. Charitable giving makes us more human, whereas hoarding risks making us less human, imprisoned by our own

selfishness.

Poner el Misterio pascual en el centro de la vida significa sentir compasión por las llagas de Cristo crucificado presentes en las numerosas víctimas inocentes de las guerras, de los abusos contra la vida tanto del no nacido como del anciano, de las múltiples formas de violencia, de los desastres medioambientales, de la distribución injusta de los bienes de la tierra, de la trata de personas en todas sus formas y de la sed desenfrenada de ganancias, que es una forma de idolatría.

Hoy sigue siendo importante recordar a los hombres y mujeres de buena voluntad que deben compartir sus bienes con los más necesitados mediante la limosna, como forma de participación personal en la construcción de un mundo más justo. Compartir con caridad hace al hombre más humano, mientras que acumular conlleva el riesgo de que se embrutezca, ya que se cierra en su propio egoísmo.

ASH WEDNESDAY AND GOOD FRIDAY are days of fast for all Catholics between 18 and 59 years of age. One full meal and two smaller,

meatless meals are permitted. Abstinence is to be observed on all Fridays of Lent as well as Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Catholics

14 years and older are bound to abstain from meat.

Look What’s Happening in the Virtual Classroom!

The Kindergarten class had their weekly "sharing day" on Zoom. They discussed what their week has been like, if they've done anything exciting and how they like the online learning experience.

The 2nd graders learned all about Henry Matisse and finished their Matisse inspired painting. They later colored in one of Matisse's well known still lifes, Harmony in Red.

The 4th graders learned how to use simple lines to create depth (foreground, middle ground and background). They moved into learning about pop art landscape like Britto ,a famous local artist. Using their knowledge of patterns, they created their own "Britto" landscape using lines ,shapes and colors.

The kindergarten students are continuing to work with their Superkids Reading series. Ms. Simoes has recorded her lessons so that the students are able to follow along in their books while listening to her voice.

This year, the St. Hugh Parish Sr. Kathleen Donnelly Scholarship Committee

will select one or more award recipients who will receive or share up to $10,000 of scholarship funding, covering up to 95% of annual tuition, books, and school

related fees for one school year. The scholarship is need based and the exact amount awarded will be determined by the Scholarship Committee.

Deadline is May 1, 2020.
