THE PAWLEYS PRESBYTERIAN
DECEMBER 2012
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour,
which is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:11
Home for Christmas
You are invited to join our choir and children on De-
cember 2nd
in the sanctuary at 6:00 PM for a lovely musi-
cal, Home for Christmas. During this season, we all cherish
our time and memories with friends and loved ones and
long for those moments when we can go home. Home for
Christmas is a compilation of old familiar songs that remind
us of the love all around us and the profound truth that
the birth of Jesus brings us to the hope of His return when
we shall see Him face to face. Afterwards, we will enjoy
refreshments and a time of fellowship in the ODFC.

Pastors’ Page Page 2
A verse we often read during the season of Advent and Christmas is John
1:14: “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Why does God self-
empty and take on human form? The Bible gives many reasons, some theolog-
ical and some quite practical. The scene of Jesus as a young boy lecturing
rabbis in the temple gives us a clue. For the first time, ordinary people can
hold a conversation with God in visible form. Jesus can talk to anyone-His
parents, a rabbi, a poor widow-without first having to announce, "Don't be afraid!” In Jesus, God
came close.
During the season of Advent which begins on Sunday, December 2, why not take time to read
from the Advent devotional you have received from your shepherd, Hope Arriving. Each day
there is a scripture lesson and devotion to help you or your family carry on a conversation with
God and He with you. As you read, you will discover four significant Christmas gifts God gives us
through Jesus Christ. We will also be preaching about these gifts on the Sundays
of Advent, and again on Christmas Eve. Take a serious look at John 1:14.
Happy Reading and Merry Christmas!
Christmas Excitement.
Are you excited about Christmas? I am. I can’t wait. Christmas is always one of my favorite times of the year! Kristin and I look forward to buying a tree as well as decorating it and our place together every December. Over thanksgiving, we met with both sides of my family (Mom’s and Dad’s). We even had a mini Christmas exchange already. We cherish every minute of family time around the holidays. The most exciting part of Christmas is striving to keep Christ in Christmas! We, as Christians, know and understand that Christmas has nothing to do about presents or trees. We enjoy celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. While
we know the true gift is Jesus, what does the rest of the world turn to? Materialistic things? Other people to worship? It is sad to think about how so much of the world is lost in darkness; so much of the world doesn’t have any joy at Christmas time. Or what about the less fortunate? What are we to do as Chris-tians? We are to share the joy of the Lord to the lost, to the lonely, to the hungry, and to the world. There's not a better place to start than right here in Pawleys Island, SC…where we live. We can even start with our neighbor across the street. Or a long-time friend. As we purchase gifts to give to people, let us also think about giving something even more im-portant this Christmas to others...Jesus. It can start with an invitation to an Advent service, Figgy Pudding, Home for Christmas, or a Christmas Eve service. Let us give the gift of Christ this Christ-
mas. Joy to the World, the Lord has Come! Let's challenge one another to Keep Christ in Christmas not just in December, but keep the Christmas spirit going throughout the whole year.
Merry Christmas! Carter

J.A.M. NEWS
The children of J.A.M. (Jesus and Me) have really been busy! They gave over
$60.00 to the Thornwell Home for Children through their Turkey donation cards
and they donated enough food/money to furnish a turkey breast and everything else
needed for 12 complete Thanksgiving dinners. They delivered their “baskets” (bags)
of goodies to 12 different families and the bags included cards and pictures that
they had written/drawn. In December they will be baking, decorating, and deliver-
ing cookies and well wishes to some members of our congregation in addition to mem-
bers of the Pawleys Island community. We will also be going to the Alabama Theatre on
December 15th (Thanks, Charlie Bradshaw) and to the “Holiday Festival of Lights” in
James Island on December 20th. What a busy and fun month!
“Check Your Drawers” Everybody has one of those drawers-you know-the one that holds all
those things that you receive for which you have no use or just don’t
need. We always think that we’re going to re-gift the items, but we don’t
because we don’t want to give it back to the person that gave it to us.
Well, I’m here to help you!! Look around your house and anything (new) that you have and don’t want
anymore can be put to good use. I need NEW unwrapped gifts to use for J.A.M.
The children of J.A.M. have been collecting beans for different things that they do-learning Bible
verses, completing their work, baking Communion Bread, helping others, etc.-the list goes on and on.
They are going to be able to “cash in” all of those beans on December 16th. We’re going to have a
“Mall” for the children to shop in where they can “buy” (with their beans) Christmas presents for
their parents, grandparents, sisters, and brothers. (I may even let them buy one thing for them-
selves.) After they “purchase” their gifts, we’re going to have a wrapping station for them to wrap
the gifts so I need donations of wrapping paper, bows, ribbon, and tape. Look around and see if
you have any of these things and if you do, please bring them to me. We have 32 children in J.A.M. so
we need a lot of NEW, great stuff for the children to use those beans for because they have
worked hard to earn them! So please “Check Your Drawers”! Thanks.
Who Wants to Help Santa?
The donations for Presbyterian Home in SC have been good, but we still need
some more items. We are in desperate need of knee-length long/short sleeve
gowns, panties (sizes 7-12), housecoats and robes, pajamas for men (L and
XL), shirts for men (L and XL), and socks. Most of these items can be found
at Dollar General, CVS, and Walgreens and all can be found at Wal-Mart and eve-
ry department store. There are sales and coupons available for all of these
items so please help the residents of the Presbyterian Home in Florence by purchasing and donating!
This is the only Christmas that some of the residents have because they have no family. Please bring
your NEW and UNWRAPPED items in the bucket outside of Julia’s office. Thanks for all that you do
for others.

CHRISTMAS POINSETTIAS
We are still taking orders for Poinsettias for the Advent Season at Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church. Honor a family member or friend or re-member someone special with a beautiful poinset-tia. Those names will be listed in the bulletin on De-cember 16th.
The poinsettias are $20 each. Order forms are available in the narthex and the church office.
We will celebrate the Lord’s Supper
on Sunday, December 2nd,
during both worship services and on
Monday, December 24th at 5:00 PM
and 8:00 PM during the Christmas Eve
Candlelight Service.
Prepare your hearts!
Dear Friends in Christ,
A big thank you for all the prayers and thoughts that I received while I was in
the hospital. I did feel God walking with me and holding my hand. I am doing
well and hope to see you soon. Thank you again and I love each of you.
Kay Biser
Did we ever say Thank You for accepting Leonard and me into your wonder-
ful Fellowship? Let me do so now and also for the wonderful outreach to me
while I was sick with the broken hip. Our heartfelt gratitude for all the cards,
flowers, visits and PRAYERS!
Lovingly in Him, Marlinde Reaves
Your Gideon Expressions Tribute donation of $678.00 will be used to purchase 136 Bibles or 502 Testa-
ments to place here and around the world. Thank you so much for your gift.
The Gideons International
ADVENT is the beginning of the church year for most churches in the Western tradi-tion. It begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day, which is the Sunday nearest November 30, and ends on Christmas Eve (Dec 24). If Christmas Eve is a Sunday, it is counted as the fourth Sunday of Advent, with Christmas Eve proper beginning at sun-down. The word 'Advent' is from the Latin 'Adventus,' which means 'coming.' It is a time of preparation, waiting and hope. The focus of the entire season is the celebration of the birth of Jesus the Christ in his First Advent, and the anticipation of the return of Christ the King in his Second Advent. Advent is a preparatory season. It has significance because it is a season of looking for-ward and waiting for something greater; both for the annual celebration of the event of Christ's birth, and for the time when Christ will come again.

Figgy Pudding Premiere 2012
We are so excited to bring to PIPC and our community this wonderful evening
of candlelight, music by our PIPC ensembles and other area musicians, unforgettable
desserts and coffee. Most of all, we pray that these evenings, December 13th and
December 14th, will bring the joy and hope of Christmas to all.
We do need more hands on Sunday, December 9th to decorate the ODFC. If you
have any time to lend a hand, please contact Sylvia at [email protected].
FIGGY PUDDING TICKETS
Tickets for Figgy Pudding may be picked up Dec. 2 and Dec. 9 in the Parlor, be-
tween the Sunday services, and following the second service. Gail Joley and Joyce Nimocks will be there
to assist you. Table numbers will be on the tickets. All tickets must be paid for before they are distrib-
uted, please. As of Thursday, November 29th, we still have a few seats available on Thursday and Fri-
day nights.
Winds of Praise
Recorder Consort
What a wonderful bless-
ing to have our recorders
play this past month on No-
vember 18th as our pre-
service music. We are
blessed to have so many
skilled musicians in our church. The recorder consort
will play again during the worship services on Sunday,
December 23rd and they will play for the Bread of Life
Kitchen on Monday, December 17th.
Also, please join the Alleluia Ringers as they ring at
the Georgetown Christmas Tree Lighting on Decem-
ber 1st at 5:00 PM. They would love to see our church
family there.
Festival of Advent Lessons and Carols
Make sure to attend the Festival of Advent Lessons and Carols on Sunday, December 9th, at 7:00 PM at Holy Cross Faith Memorial Epis-copal Church in Pawleys Island. The Lessons tell the story of God’s love through music and song. Among the wonderful performers for the evening will be our own Syd-ney Windham and Paula Richard-son.
Don’t miss this special oppor-tunity to worship with others and set the tone for a joyous Christmas season.

On Sunday, November 18th, the congre-
gation approved the election of the following
Elders, Deacons and Trustee for 2013:
Elders: John Horton, Herb Lawson, Bill
McElroy, Ragan Ormand, Ben Vincent.
Deacons: Cari Brown, Robin Daniels, Ken
Leach, Martha McCall
Trustee: Charlie Bradshaw
Please continue to keep our
Elders, Deacons, and Trustees
At its meeting in November the Session received new members, Joe and Sara Weeks, by reaffirmation of faith. Sara was once a member of Ocean Drive Presbyterian and Joe was a member of a Catholic church. Ken Dewell, chairman of the Finance Committee, an-nounced that we have received, as of December 1st, 122 stewardship pledges out of 270 church families. That’s about 30 less than we had received last year at this time. These 122 families have pledged a total of $575,000 which still leaves us considerably short of our 2013 projected
needs. We are hopeful that the remaining 2013 pledges will be returned during December. Because of child care regulations in the country our Session has had to institute a new policy which conforms to these regulations requiring that no animals be present in the church buildings where children are present and food is being served. Allergies to animals is another reason for this. Thanks for your cooperation. The Worship Committee has installed a new sound system in the sanctuary and will also be installing an improved video system recording our Sunday morning worship services. If you would like a DVD recording of the morning services, please call the church office.(237-4581) On Saturday, December 1, at 9:30 AM members and friends are invited to come and help us decorate our sanctuary for Advent and Christmas. Lunch will be served. The Mission and Evangelism Committee is planning another mission trip to Cuba in April of 2013. The Church Life Committee invites members and friends to come for a Christmas treat in the ODFC following the Christmas program on Sunday evening, December 2nd. The Session also renewed its membership with the Fellowship of Presbyterians whose mis-sion is to build flourishing churches that makes disciples of Jesus Christ. We remembered in our prayers our members and friends in the hospital and others who have been sick.
2013 Pledge Update
If you are planning to pre-pay your 2013 pledge, please ensure that
“2013 Pre-Paid Pledge”
is contained on the memo line of your check.
For 2013 - 122 pledges received to date for a total of $575,000. For 2012 - pledges in 2012 at this time totaled 589,000. 30 pledges were received in 2012 which to date have not been renewed for 2013. Value of 2012 pledges not yet received for 2013 = $113,000.

On Saturday, November 17th, Ron Griffin
and his elves delivered
164 Shoeboxes to the
Operation Christmas Child drop-off point. Thanks to everyone for your
support of this special ministry.
What a blessing it is to be able to give these children not
only Christmas gifts, but to also give them “The Greatest
Gift of All,” the gift of the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
ANGEL TREE
It’s that time of year again. We have the names of local children from
the Waccamaw Elementary & the Intermediate Schools for our Angel Tree
that will be located in the Narthex. Names will be available on Sunday,
December 2nd
and December 9th, before and after the 8:45 AM & the 11:00
AM worship services or as long as they last. There will be three angels for
each child with either a shirt/sweater, pants or game/toy on each. You may
choose one, two or more angels but please remember that when you take
an angel, your name must be noted on the sign up sheet that will be next to the Angel Tree. The deadline
to get your gifts back to the church is Monday, December 17th. Please be sure to have your gifts wrapped
with the angel tag attached so it is easily seen. The children who receive these gifts, who may otherwise be
without a gift at Christmas, are so thankful for your kindness and generosity
Whoever brings blessing will be enriched,
and one who waters will himself be watered.
Proverbs 11:25
We will receive the Christmas Joy Offering on Monday,
December 24th during the Christmas Eve Candlelight Ser-
vices.
The Christmas Joy Offering provides the opportunity
for future leaders of the church, from all racial and ethnic
backgrounds, to pursue and fulfill their dreams through
Presbyterian-related education. The offering also assists
families of active and retired church workers meet unex-
pected needs through the Assistance Program of the Board
of Pensions.
Your support of these faithful servants and students in
their hour of great need and hour of great promise is in-
valuable.

PIPC LIBRARY NEWS AND NOTES
With apologies to Clement Clarke Moore:
Twas a library nightmare when from off the
shelves,
Sprouting wings some books flew off some-
where by themselves.
The cards in the pockets were not left be-
hind,
We do not have a clue where these books
we might find!
We hope they are safe and are being read
by some of you,
Please tell us that’s so – sign the card and
mark when the book’s due,
The desk in the library has a card file,
We hope to see more cards there in just a
while!
Thank you and Merry Christmas
from the PIPC Library Committee!
Take a moment to acknowledge those who have a birthday or anniversary this month. If your birthday/anniversary is not listed in your month, please contact Tina in the church office at 237-4581 (ext. 21).
