Stewardship A Way of Life

This Week’s Readings “Whatever you do,” says St. Paul to the Colossians, “...do it in the name of the Lord Jesus. Give thanks to God the Father through Him.” And so it is that we offer our gifts in the Eucharist “through Him, with Him and in Him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit…”

Principal’s Announcements

Happy New Year!

God, thank you for a new year! May everyone in our school family be willing to begin anew with a clean slate. We know that you are always ready to forgive us. Help us to be willing to forgive ourselves and to forgive one another. As we begin a new year, remind us of our truest values and our deepest desires. Help us to live in the goodness that comes from doing what you want us to do. Help us to put aside anxiety about the future and the past, so that we might live in peace with you now, one day at a time. Welcome back to school! Please join us on Wednesday, January 3rd for our monthly school liturgy at 9:00 a.m. School will dismiss at 12 noon. There is a half day skating event from 1:00 -3:00 p.m. at the Twin Rinks in Eisenhower Park. Saturday, January 6th is grades 2-1 and 2-2 First Reconciliation. 2-1’s ceremony is at 10:30 a.m. and 2-2’s ceremony is at 12:30 p.m. Please keep our 2nd graders in your thoughts and prayers! Thank you for all the Christmas good wishes, treats and gifts. Your generosity is overwhelming! God bless you and your families today and throughout the New Year!

Mrs. Cecilia St. John Principal

From the Rector — Dear Parishioners: Please know of my gratitude to all those who had a part in this past week’s Christmas celebrations. I thank our liturgical ministers: the members of our Choirs, Cantors and Musicians, the Readers, Extraordinary Ministers of the Communion (at Mass and to the homebound and hospitalized), Altar Servers, Sacristans, Ushers and Ministers of Hospitality. I thank the Liturgy Committee and staff personnel who worked so hard in preparing and setting up for these Liturgies. I thank our Pastoral Staff and, in particular, Michael Bower, who oversaw even more this year of the Liturgical facets of Christmas than he usually does. Once again, dedicated volunteers delivered over 90 poinsettia plants to the homebound and I thank them. To the Giving Tree Committee, its volunteers and those who donated a gift and to Sister Kathleen and her dedicated volunteers, thank you. You have made people’s Christmas brighter by your generosity. Thank you to our maintenance personnel who worked so hard seeing to the myriad of details that go into preparing for Christmas both inside and outside of the Cathedral. I thank Bishop Barres, Bishop Murphy and my brother priest for leading us in prayer. Since it is when all of us join together in prayer and song that we truly give fitting honor and praise to God, I thank everyone who was part of our Christmas Liturgies and lifted up their hearts and voices to God. On behalf of the priests of the parish, I thank everyone who extended their Christmas wishes to us. Your thoughtfulness and kindness, your faith and example are most appreciated and made us once again know how blessed we are to serve the Parish of St. Agnes Cathedral. As we turn the page of our calendars and welcome in the new year, it is a natural time to look back on not just the past week but these past twelve months. As I do so, I am also grateful to our Holy Father and his appointment of Bishop Barres as the fifth Bishop of our Diocese. Over the past twelve months, Bishop Barres has been tireless in getting to know the people of our Diocese as well as our Parish and we are truly blessed. With his well-deserved retirement, Bishop Murphy has moved into the rectory and, with less diocesan commitments, he has been freer to celebrate weekday Masses at the Cathedral and for that, along with the opportunity his residing in the rectory has given the priests to experience his solicitude and wisdom, I am grateful. Over the past year, Mr. Joe Long joined our Pastoral Staff as Director of Faith Formation and Evangelization and his experience and knowledge has enabled us to continue to grow as we build on the work of Dr. Jo-Ann Metzdorff, who retired from a similar position this past June. And while they are not part of the full-time Pastoral Staff, Msgr. Bob Morrissey and Msgr. Jim Vlaun are now residents of the Parish and their assistance at Masses has been and will be a blessing for us. We have been blessed over this past week as well as the past twelve months. As we look to 2018, may we continue to be blessed. In the Peace and Love of Christ,

Father Bill

March for Life January 19, 2018

Please join the Respect Life Committee at St. Agnes for this year’s March for Life in Washington DC. This peaceful demonstration witnesses for the 55 million babies that have been murdered by abortion since 1973 and has been described the greatest human rights violation of our time. We also protest the more recent development of the drive to legalize euthanasia in our states. St Agnes Cathedral will, again, provide a bus on Friday, January 19, 2018 for pilgrims from the Rockville Centre area. This demonstration for life continues to make a difference in protecting innocent unborn children from the evil of abortion. Roe vs. Wade originally allowed abortions in the 1st trimester of pregnancy and has now been interpreted to include any time during pregnancy, up to immediately before delivery. This is not a Women’s Health issue as abortion advocates proclaim, it is an issue that defines the dignity of the human person. Please consider joining the hundreds of thousands of people going to Washington D.C. on Friday, January 19, 2018. Our bus leaves from the Cathedral at 6:00 a.m. after a 5:30 a.m. mass and blessing. We will return to the Cathedral prior to 11:00 p.m. that evening. It is important that you make a reservation on the bus by e-mailing St Agnes at [email protected] or by calling the rectory at (516) 766-0205. Your reservation must include your cell phone number and e-mail address.
