The Newsletter Forbes High School March 24, 2010 Principals Report New Chaplain Begins Former student, Thea Janetzki, joins the Forbes High staff as our new chaplain. Thea completed her HSC at Forbes High in 2007 and fills the vacancy left by former chaplain, Ruth Virtue, who left us during the Christmas holidays to take up a position in Sydney. Keen to get her teeth into her new role, Thea has already introduced herself to the local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group and joined the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) committee. As well as being responsible for a range of pastoral care activities in the school, Thea will also be responsible for co-ordinating the Premier's Student Volunteer Program wish is about to be launched and will give recognition to those students who involve themselves in a wide range of extra-curricular activities. The chaplain will be available for students, staff and community every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. The chaplaincy is a voluntary service provided by the Australian Government National School Chaplaincy Program. Re-Engage Me! Planning is well underway for the introduction next term of an important new program, Re-Engage Me (REM). This is in off-campus program funded by Schools in Partnership, a joint DET/AECG initiative. Under this program, the school will employ an additional teacher and an Aboriginal Education Worker to run a specific program designed to teach essential literacy/numeracy, social and communication skills to students at risk of failing in mainstream education. Many agencies, including Centacare, Yoorana Gunya, Octec, Forbes Council, NSW Police and Greater Western Area Health, have already shown significant support for this project. I expect that a number of other key agencies will come on board in the near future. The school has formed an Advisory Committee to oversee this project and will be responsible for managing the employment of staff, development of teaching programs and the allocation of resources. This is an exciting initiative and has already drawn interest from a number of other areas, mainly because it seeks to support students through early intervention rather than by responding in a punitive manner when it is too late to help. Student Voice Heard Brian Dunn, Year 12 has been appointed to an important reference group for the NSW Commission for Young People. The Commission was established by an Act of Parliament in 1998 and listens to children and young people and promotes their interests. In order to promote the participation of young people in the decisions that affect them, the Commission has established a Young People’s Reference Group. Twelve members from across the state have been appointed to this group, which meets every two months in Sydney. Their role is to inform and advise the Commission in the course of their work. Interestingly, the Acting Commissioner is Jan McClelland, a former Director- General, Department of Education & Training. Congratulations to Brian on his involvement in this group. Senior Programmed Study Wednesdays at Forbes High School have seen a dramatic change in our program for seniors. Every Wednesday Week A Preliminary students (Year 11) will attend programmed study sessions con-ducted by different teachers, followed by an afternoon of compulsory sport. The following Wednesday (Week B) our HSC students (Year 12) attend for three periods and then have the choice of attending sport or going home for the afternoon. Students that have enrolled in TAFE courses should still attend TAFE but must be at school at other times. So far this year students have looked at assessment schedules, the HSC structure and requirements, essay writing techniques, HSC All My Own Work (mandatory Board of Studies requirement), pro-grammed study and useful websites to assist with study skills and time management. These pro-grammed study days have also been supported by the HSC Tertiary Excursion in Week 2 and a visit by Elevate Education which is a company that focuses on time management skills and various study techniques. Our senior students will also be involved in a visit from the Western Region Board of Studies Liai-son Officer (BOSLO) early in Term 2 to discuss HSC changes and how the marking process works while also addressing any student queries. A reminder to parents and students that these Wednesdays are compulsory and should be treated as any normal school day.

Science News WOW! The Science and Engineering Challenge was a fantastic event. 32 Year 10 students from Forbes High School travelled to Red Bend Catholic College on Thursday 4th March to compete in the Science and Engineering Challenge against a total of 7 schools from the region. Students worked in groups of four to complete challenges set by Newcastle University. Chal-lenges ranged from Helicopter challenges to designing bridges and eco friendly houses. Our kids did us proud. They worked cooperatively and diligently to complete each challenge. The team work was inspirational. FHS came first in all the point score updates all day.....until the final challenge: the bridge. Unfortunately we fell in a heap. Disappointing but still we ended up fin-ishing 3rd overall.... a magnificent achievement since there was only 14 points between first and third places from totals of around 1600+ points. Our year 10 students won three of the challenges outright: These were

Other members of our Science and Engineering Challenge team are: Nick, Brianna, Alex, Tom, Jordan, Elymar, Tayla, Brennan, Daryen, Taylah, Milann, Nick, Jessie, Page, Cooper, Mel, Chase, Shaun, Grant, Emily, Aimee, Mel, Brandon and Blake. Well done everyone! I hope you had a great experience and think seriously about some of the suggestions made by the real life engineers on the day.

Open Boys Soccer V Condobolin High School 8/3/10

In the first round of the CHS Open Boys Soccer Forbes High School played Condobolin High School at Condobolin. Forbes High School started the match with several missed shots at goal but after about 8 minutes Gus was able to put a good shot past the Condo goal keeper to give the team a 1 goal advantage. From that point on Forbes dominated possession and with a strong tail wind and accurate passing were able to maintain control of the match. Mat was able to score a hat trick of goals and Forbes High went to the half time break leading 4 goals to 0. The second half saw Condobolin come out firing and they were not about to surrender this game lightly. Only good keeper work from Adrian held them at bay. Tim was able to fire one past the goal keeper and Forbes High School took an unbeatable lead. To Condo’s credit they fought back well and thefinal score was 6 – 3 after a late goal to Mark. The team consisted of the following students Shaun (captain), Adrian, Mark, Jack, Mat, Tim, Jame, Sam, Cooper, Brodie, Tom, Gus, Tim, Jed, Jordan and Nick. A big thank you to Mr Ward for driving the bus. Round 2 opponents will be Cowra or Parkes.

Open Girls Soccer V Henry Lawson High School 17/03/10

Forbes High School played Henry Lawson High School at Grenfell in the first round of CHS Open Girls Soccer. Forbes High Girls started the game with some great defence and persistence as they tried to keep the ball from their half. The communication on the field was exceptional although a break in the chain allowed Henry Lawson’s star player to score 2 consecutive goals. The girls at-

tacked as hard as they could, trying whatever was possible al-though a number of missed shots allowed Grenfell to take the lead at half time 4 to 0. After a team chat and some juicy oranges the girls took the field with a better approach. The girls were marking up, putting pressure on the Henry Lawson girls and keeping them out of the goal area. After 12 minutes of the second half a lapse in Forbes’ defence saw Grenfell shoot a successful shot through the goal posts. An unlucky penalty allowed Grenfell to have a shot at goal which was delivered successfully ending the game with Grenfell 7 goals to 0.

Congratulations to Krystal for her continuous efforts on the field and Logan Dukes for her efforts in stopping the numerous shots fired at her throughout the game. All the girls on the team played their part to the best of their ability. Congratulations. Our team included a wide spread of ages with girls as young as year 8. All the girls need a pat on the back for their hard work, commitment and great sportsmanship that has been demonstrated at training and on game day. The team consisted of the following students Krystal, Aimee, Melanie, Billie Ellen, Meg, Tayla, Laura, Logan, Darcie, Alex, Isabelle, Stacey, Brittany. A big Thank you to Mr Sherritt for driving the bus.

Exploring Early Childhood Year 12  Below ‐  Amy, Ashleigh, Breanna, Melissa  and baby Lilly.                 My experience with the “Baby Think It Over” Program went over 3 days. It was a very educational experience and it was enjoyable but also very difficult. To make the doll seem more real to me I named it, Lilly. The first night I had the baby was on a Monday night. It was set on easy. After taking Lilly home from school on Monday afternoon, I put her in a cot that was mine when I was a baby. I carried her around for a while and she did not cry until 8pm at night. Although it was a long time without her crying, I had to care for her for 30min until she stopped crying. After that she woke me at 1am and again at 6am. I had to get up from bed and care for her for about 25min each time. I positioned the cot next to my bed to get to her quickly when she cried. Then I brought her back to school on Tuesday morning and she didn’t cry. I took her home again on Tuesday night and she was set on normal. She cried for about 20min at 6pm then again at 9, 12.30am, 4am and 7am. I had to care for her for around 15-20 minutes every time she cried. Although I did enjoy having a baby to care for, after Tuesday night I was getting a little bit tired and sick of the baby. On Wednesday the baby was set on cranky. She cried al-most every hour all through Wednesday and Wednesday night. Although she woke up frequently during the night, she would only cry for 5-10min each time so I could go back to sleep! On Thursday morning I brought Lilly back to school and she cried on the bus, extremely embarrassing! When we got to school I gave her back. Although I really did enjoy having her, I was extremely tired and cranky when I gave her back on Thursday. On Thursday night I didn’t sleep very well because I was so aware and kept thinking I still had her and was wait-ing for her to cry. I really enjoyed the experience of having to care for a baby, and I learnt a lot and it was a huge responsibility. Even though by the end, Lilly was driving me crazy and I was tired and cranky. I’m glad I did it and it helps me realise what having a real baby is really like. The “Baby Think It Over Program” is a good idea to teach teenagers the responsibility that comes with children. It was a very educational and enjoyable experience, but it didn’t go without difficulties!

AECG MEETING DATES 2010

Koori Korner Hey everyone, just want to let you know what’s happening at school. We have been running 2 Wiradjuri classes a week, one with Yr7 and the other with Yr8. Donna Haines has been working along side our Language teacher Miss Townend both of which have successfully completed Wiradjuri Language Certificates 1, 2 and 3. Joy Russell has also successfully completed certificates 1 and 2 in Wiradjuri Language. Each week we are giving the students an opportunity to learn our language. So far, it is working really well, the kids have already learnt some of the animals and are now working towards putting these into sentences. They have also just started to learn our greeting. With the support of the school we hope that this will continue to be an important journey for the students as well as the aboriginal students of Forbes High. Just to get you started here is the word for people: Mayiny. Happy learning and lets continue to work and enjoy school. See ya Joy and Donna

What can you do? Reduce greenhouse gas pollution by washing clothes in cold water and avoid using a clothes dryer – let air and sunlight dry them wherever possible.
