Texas heat, a severe drought and hungry livestock has taken a toll on Texas farmers and ranchers. To make matters worse, some are taking another hit from scammers. By taking advantage of the Texas drought, scammers are attempting to sell worthless hay to farmers and ranchers seeking affordable product for their hungry livestock. Scammers are seizing the opportunity to mark up the price of hay and reap a big profit at the expense of desperate farmers and ranchers anxious to keep their herds from sell off. Wes retired from the Veterans Administration in 1978 as Chief of Administrative Services. As a second career, he started teaching the people in Africa the W rod of the Bible by correspondence. This program became outstandingly successful.

Wes is glad to be at Providence Park as his wife is a resident at St. Catherine’s and it makes visitation much easier. His surviving daughter, Barbara, lives close by and helps with the care of both parents. Welcome to the Providence Park family, Wes…..

F R I E N D L Y R E M I N D E R About Christmas Trees & Lighting.

Unfortunately, it’s that time of year again when fires are more prevalent due to Christmas Trees and their lights. Please do not use extension cords or burn candles in your apartments. These items are very dangerous fire hazards and could cause serious damage should a problem occur.

With a beautiful singing voice that spanned nearly three octaves, Maria Callas was perhaps the most famous coloratura soprano of the twentieth century.

Maria Callas, the younger of two daughters was born on December 2, 1923, to parents who had recently emigrated from Greece. Maria’s mother recognized her talent and pushed her into performing in amateur talent shows, sometimes to the child’s dislike. After Callas graduated from eighth grade in 1937, her mother decided to return to Greece. This move marked the end of her academic education.

In November 1940, Callas made her professional debut singing the role of Beatrice in Boccaccio. Soon, however, the onslaught of World War II and the Nazi occupation of Greece inhibited her career. Stories have been told that her mother forced her to sing for both German and Italian

soldiers in return for food and protection.

In 1947, she sang in La Gioconda at the Arena in Verona, Italy. Her performance was outstanding and marked the onset of her international reputation.

In April 1949 she married Giovanni Meneghini, a wealthy businessman from Verona. He gave up his business interests and took over her career.

By the 1960’s Maria was having vocal problems; however, her acting ability remained superb. At the height of her career she had sung as many as fifty performances in a year; after 1959, it was fewer that ten. Her last stage performance was on July 5, 1965 at Covent Garden, London.

Callas taught at the Juilliard School in New York during the 1971-1972 school years and gave a final concert tour during 1973 and 1974, the

Remembering.... MARIA CALLASby: Ann Schafer

strain of the tour proved almost too much for her, and she never again sang publicly. She retired to Paris where she died on September 16, 1977, at the age of fifty-four.
