Some Thoughts on the Apocrypha and Angels

For about a month my Sunday School teacher, Glenn Hilburn, has been discussing the Apocrypha, a religious collection about which most of us members knew little or nothing. We now know that it contains 14 items, most of which were written during the 400-year span between the Old and New Testaments.

One of the earliest efforts to bring together various sacred writings was completed in 405, the Latin Vulgate, by Saint Jerome. The apocryphal materials were interspersed in the Old Testament. The Gutenberg Bible, an edition of the Vulgate published in 1455, continued incorporating the apocryphal items.

Martin Luther’s German Bible, published in 1534, also contained the apocryphal writings; however, they were placed in a separate section between the Testaments. And such was the same with the first edition of the King James Bible in 1611; however, they were removed in 1647 from further editions. And, today most Protestant Bibles do not contain the Apocrypha, while the Anglican and Catholic traditions continue its inclusion.

One of the apocryphal items that caught my attention was the little “book” of Tobit, eight pages long. This very brief, but interesting story relates Tobit sending his son, Tobias, on a long journey to recover money belonging to the family. Unbeknownst to the son, he was safely guided through several difficulties to a safe return to his home by an angel. The story closed with Tobias being told that his guide had been Raphael, one of the archangels.

In looking up Tobias on the web, I found four paintings portraying his farewell to his parents before departing on the trip. To my surprise, the angel had no wings in two of the paintings. That aroused my curiosity, so I began an investigation. First, I learned that the Scriptures say nothing about angels having wings. And, the earliest artistry depicting angels with wings appeared around 400.

While angels today are usually identified as male, I found an interesting advertisement last week in the American Profile supplement of the Waco paper. An angel with “the Blue Willow motif on her wings” is now available for collectors of that china pattern. “Celebrate an ancient love story with this heavenly angel.” One of my former associates is a collector of just about everything including angels. This would be an unusual addition to her collection.

Card BingoCard Bingo will be in the St. Elizabeth Dining room again this month. It worked out very well last month and we had plenty of room for everyone to come and enjoy the game. The game will

start at 2:30 p.m. on Monday April 1st. Remember, if you can get a table of 4 players up before the game starts it will make seating arrangements much less complicated.

The United States Postal Service will begin its annual food drive on Monday April 15th. We will be placing a donation box in the St. Elizabeth Place Lobby for anyone wishing to donate. The food drive will end on Friday May 10th so you have plenty of time to make those donations. Our own postman will be picking up

the donations from time to time during the duration of the project. Let’s help those who are less fortunate in our community by making a donation of non-perishable food items to this great cause.

Volunteer Appreciation WeekApril 21st through April 27th is National Volunteer Appreciation Week. Each year we have a volunteer appreciation luncheon for our volunteers during that week and this year it will be on Wednesday April 24th at 12 noon in the community room. This is a “by invitation only” event, so if you are a resident and

did not receive an invitation, and feel you should have, please see Sharon. We may have some resident volunteers who are not yet registered through our volunteer program and we need to get you registered. Thanks for all you do for Providence Park by giving your time to volunteer…….
