SPCA Welcomes New Neighbors By Angela Martin and Bonnie Randolph.

Shepherd Park Citizens Associa-tion embarked on a new pilot project this year – welcoming new neighbors into Shepherd Park with a Welcome Gift Basket. Former SPCA President Baruti Jahi, SPCA Board Mem-ber Angela Martin, and Shepherd Park neighbor and real estate agent Bonnie Randolph devised this program in 2006 and basket delivery began in Spring 2007. The gift bas-kets contain the SPCA newsletter and calendar of SPCA activities, Shep-herd Park History DVD, Shepherd Park sweat-shirt coupon, Shepherd Elementary School information, the Gateway Georgia Avenue Business Directory and several promotional items. Thanks to the following neighborhood businesses for their generous contributions to the bas-

kets: American Security & Communi-cations, Cork ‘N’ Bottle, Ledo Pizza and Pasta, Manoukian Brothers Ori-ental Rugs, Postal Connections, Pure

Bliss Day Spa, Speedy Tax & Ac-counting Services, and Wireless Toyz. And a special thanks to Marc Loud, Executive Di-rector of Gateway Georgia Avenue Revitalization Corp. for his valuable as-sistance. Neighbor-hood businesses that would like to contribute to the gift baskets, con-

tact Bonnie Randolph at 829-7774 or email: [email protected], or Angela Martin at 723-0323 or email: [email protected].

Last month Bonnie Randolph and SPCA President Beth Allaben deliv-

ered a gift basket to Kathleen Perry on Hemlock Street. Kathleen moved here from Portland, Oregon and said she was attracted to our area because of the strong sense of community in Shepherd Park. SPCA has delivered seven gift baskets to date and will de-liver more as our new neighbors move into their new homes.

Shepherd Park Needs You!

We’re looking for residents to share their best poetry, short sto-ries or cartoons. Did you write a haiku about your morning walk in the neighborhood? Share your inner muse with your neighbors. The “Shepherd Park News” plans to regularly feature contributions of the finest neighborhood ama-teur cartoonists, poets and writ-ers. This is an excellent opportu-nity for contributors of all ages and experience levels. This could be your first step before your regular contribution to the “The New Yorker” or “Reader’s Digest”! To submit your contribution or learn more contact “Shepherd Park News” co-editor Sekou Biddle at [email protected].

Neighbor to Head Dance School By Beth Allaben.

Washington children have been studying at the Jones-Haywood School of Dance for more than 65 years. One of those students was Shepherd Park neighbor Sandra Fortune-Green, who went on to study in New York at the School of American Ballet, The American Ballet Theatre and the Joffrey Ballet. She always stayed in touch with Jones-Haywood, and after teaching there for many years Sandra stepped up to become the school’s director earlier this year.

In addition to serving as director for the Jones-Haywood School of Dance, Sandra is a member of the

faculty of Duke Ellington School of the Arts and Howard University’s College of Arts and Sciences in the Dance Majors Degree Program.

Located nearby at 1200 Delafield Place, NW (441-1099 or 882-4039), Jones-Haywood offers a wide variety of dance instruction, includ-ing classical ballet and pointe technique, modern technique, hip-hop and tap. The school also offers piano lessons for children.

Sandra and her husband have lived on 13th Street for 20 years, where they raised their daughter, Kellye, a 2004 graduate of West Point.

Take a Walk with the Orange Hats The Shepherd Park Orange Hats

were recognized with a community service award and a certificate of ap-preciation from PSA 401 and MPD 4D respectively on August 7 at the Na-tional Night Out event. Both awards were in recognition of outstanding service to the community. Thanks to all who served this past year.

The Orange Hatters are recruiting people to walk with them, even one or two nights a month. Current and prospective patrollers are invited to a meeting on Wednesday, Sep-tember 26, at 7 pm at the Shep-herd Park Library. Contact Cynthia Prather at [email protected] or 882-7419 for more information.

Editor’s note: Shepherd Park takes its name from Alexander “Boss” Shepherd, who served as Washington’s last territo-rial governor and had a country home near what is now Geranium Street and Alaska Avenue. Although the home is long gone, the estate’s carriage house remains where it serves as Richard and Kathleen Hage’s garage.

When Mary and Alexander Shep-herd traveled from their in-town mansion at 17th and K Streets to their country home, they knew they were almost there when they passed the delightful porter’s lodge, located where Walter Reed’s main gatehouse now stands at Elder Street and Geor-gia Avenue. It was built of stone with

a mansard-style second floor with arched windows. A graceful, cedar- lined half-mile drive took the Shep-herds and their seven children up to the fourth highest point in DC. A loop of the driveway swung their car-riage to the front of their country mansion, Bleak House. If one stayed on the drive, a second loop, also be-

tween cedar trees, would take them to the east side of the stone carriage house, a building that has survived since the build-ing of Bleak House in 1873. Like

the porter’s lodge, it likely had a sec-ond story where perhaps the livery-man lived.

Bleak House, so named because the family was reading at that time the novel by Charles Dickens, was the summer and weekend getaway house from downtown Washington. The house sat on 300 acres bounded on the east by Georgia Avenue and run-ning down to Rock Creek (there was no 16th Street in those days), and from today’s Hemlock Street south through the grounds of Walter Reed.

Looking north, the Shepherds could see open ground interspersed with other mansions, including that of Lin-coln confidant Francis Montgomery, located at the giant “acorn” on New-ell Street and East-West Highway.

Until quite recently, one could trace the location of the old driveway from the porter’s lodge to the car-riage house by noting the parallel rows of cedar trees lifting their tops above today’s houses. And in Bleak House’s former backyard just north of the carriage house, the cherry trees grew to heights of 30 feet or more.

The building of Bleak House and its porter’s lodge and car-riage house in 1873 coincided with the termi-nation by Con-gress of the territorial form of government (akin to the ter-ritories of the old west, say Dakota) and Shepherd’s position of governor. Within two years, he was bankrupt, his mansion on K Street sold, and the family moved to their country home on a year round basis.

In 1880, the family moved to Mex-ico where Shepherd controlled a sil-ver mine. He died in 1902. But the family owned the land and home until 1910.

The epitaph for the country retreat was written by one of Shepherd’s grandchildren:

What fun we children used to have On Granddad’s old estate— The drive between tall evergreens Through the wrought iron gate…. The carriage house, with all its rigs, Had a smell too, of its own. So many memories linger still; Hayrides we loved to take,… The dear old walls torn down For sub-divisions squares…. But to us who remember it It remains hallowed ground.

In 1916 the porter’s lodge and mansion were demolished to make way for a subdivision. But the carriage house just happened to be of a size and location suitable for a garage in the new age of automobiles and so it stands today at the rear of 1332 Holly Street. The mansion was at the rear of what are now the lots for 1321 and 1325 Geranium Streets and extended into the alley.

Shepherd Park Community Steps Up for Shepherd Elementary

By Yvonne McIntyre. Photos by Beth Allaben and Warren Peck.

Shepherd Elementary went through a remarkable transformation this summer. Warren Peck, Shepherd Elementary parent and co-chair of the PTA Buildings and Grounds Commit-tee, organized weekend clean-ups, drawing many of the school’s teach-ers, parents and neighbors who came to help clean, paint, move furniture and help teachers set up their class-rooms. In addition to contributing time, people also contributed funds to help pay for classroom painting. And

when DC’s promised repair “blitz” was slow to get started, the PTA and many parents and

neighbors con-tacted our gov-ernment offi-cials, including Councilmember Muriel Bowser (who came to the s choo l every week-end), Mayor Adrian Fenty a n d D C P S

Chancellor Michelle Rhee, to jump-start the work. As a result of all this effort, Shepherd Elementary students started the new year at a school that is now much safer, cleaner and brighter. Thanks to all of those in-volved over the summer and we hope we can continue to rely on the com-munity throughout this school year.

Kids of all ages are welcome and will find something fun to do.

Tutoring for Shepherd Students For the tenth year, the Shepherd/Tifereth Israel Tutoring Program will provide free weekly tutoring to Shep-herd Elementary school students.

We meet every week at the local synagogue on Sundays from 5-6 pm. We will start this year in late Sep-tember.

Each student is paired with an adult or a high school or junior high school student for the year.

Together, the student and tutor go over math or reading, or do home-

work together. In the course of the year, the stu-dent and tutor form a close rela-tionship and we have seen im-provements in many students’ per-formance and enjoyment of school.

If you are interested in having your child receive tutoring, if you would like to volunteer (high schoolers can receive commu-nity service credit), or to learn more, e-mail Dan Nathan at [email protected]

Neighborhood Optical Offers Vision for the Future Article and Photos by Cynthia Prather.

Do your eyes thirst for comfort? Want to try a new look? The answers to these and other questions wel-come you at Focal Point Optical, the optical shop on Eastern Avenue just west of Georgia Avenue and the Sil-ver Spring line. August 2007 marked the 16th year for owner/optometrist, Dr. Kevin Jackson, who opened in Shepherd Park in 1991.

As an African American, Dr. Jack-

son is one of a few minority-owned, independent opticals in the city. “Not too many black optometrists own their own practice and the optical,” he said, counting them on one hand.

He attributes the concept of provid-ing a service and a product to a brain-storm from his father. He continues his commitment to this, even as lar-ger chains offer stiff competition. Fo-cal Point’s optometry services include

routine eye exams, tests for glaucoma and problem diagnosis. Once the problem is pinpointed, Dr. Jackson and his staff help customers select the eyeware they need. Single vision lenses, no-line bi-focals and progres-sive lenses are available.

Perhaps what distinguishes Dr. Jackson most from other local op-tometrists are his fashion-forward frames. Displays include frames for men and women by Prada, Armani, Alain Mikli, Francois Pinton, Skaga, Pro Design and others (he assures me that optical afficionados will appreci-ate the names and the prices). Some special orders are possible.

Dr. Jackson’s main hope is that more people in the community will come and support Focal Point and other neighborhood shops. “A cus-tomer who had been promising to come in for months showed up one morning and had three friends with him. He picked up his order, and two of them bought glasses.” Dr. Jackson’s eyes danced behind his designer frames. “That made my day.” Focal Point Optical 7828 Eastern Avenue, NW 829-2700
