Dr. Rose (Rodie) Squires came to St. Elizabeth Place on December 30th to be closer to her daughter who lives in Lorena. “Rodie” also has 2 grandchildren one of which lives in New York and one lives in McKinney. She has a beautiful one year old

great granddaughter.

Dr. Squires graduated from the Roosevelt Hospital School of Nursing as an RN. She went on to get her doctorate at age 50 from Columbia University with a degree in education with emphasis on disease prevention and health promotion. Dr. Squires also served as a Navy Nurse during WWII. She was a faculty member of numerous Universities with the most recent being Arizona State University College of Nursing.

Dr. Squires attended 49 elder-hostels, now called Rhodes Scholar throughout the United States and Canada, visiting from 1 -2 weeks at each facility. “Rodie” enjoys reading, playing bridge and working on her Macintosh Computer which she has had since the late 80’s. She has also visited all the National Parks in the United States and loves the outdoors and the peace and tranquility it provides.

Welcome to Providence Park Dr. Squires.

Mittens the cat and Ruth Sappenfield moved to the Village from The Overlook here in Waco on December 18th. She said she is glad to be here where there are plenty of things to do and is looking forward to playing bridge with fellow residents.

Ruth was an English teacher with 4 children, 3 boys and 1 girl. Her daughter lives

New Friends at Providence Park

here in Waco. Ruth also has 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She and her husband liked to go on a lot of cruises. Her husband was a Professor of Agronomy at the University of Missouri. He was also a cotton breeder and is responsible for creating new strains of cotton.

Welcome to the Park, Ruth, we are happy you’re here!

year they worked with the residents in making some goodie bags for residents who have little or no family to visit them. Kevin always makes his programs interesting by using visual aids or other Church members to keep the study ALIVE…………..

“The Greens” make their Debut at Providence ParkOn Monday February 25th, “The Greens”, a husband and wife combo will be making their first appearance here at Providence Park in the Village Dining Room at 2:30 p.m. They are coming to us from Nashville Tennessee and will be performing throughout Texas on this tour. All residents from the Village and St. Elizabeth Place are invited to come and listen. See you there.

Comanches and Choctaws

Recently I read an intriguing narrative of Native American history, Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History. The author, S.C. Gwynne, offers a vivid account of the forty-year struggle between Comanche Indians and white settlers over control of the land. Intertwined with the drama of the battles is the story of Quanah, possibly the greatest of the Indian chiefs.

Although the Apaches and Sioux were valiant defenders of their tribal lands, the legendary fighting ability of the Comanches probably had the greatest influence on the development of the American West. Their culture evolved around the horse that was brought to the Southwest scene by the Spanish in 1598. The horse not only facilitated their mobility in pursuing buffalo, but it put them at great advantage in dealing with their enemies.

In contrast to the Plains tribes who were hunters, the Indians east of the Mississippi River were largely sedentary, primarily farmers. The cultural patterns of the major tribes in the Southeast—Choctaws, Creeks, Chickasaws, Cherokees, and

New Activities coming to St. Elizabeth PlaceCoffe & Donuts, Dominoes, Card Games, & PuzzlesBeginning in February, each Monday morning at 9:30 a.m. there will be coffee and donuts available in the St. Elizabeth Activity Room.

There will also be Mexican Train Dominoes in the St. Elizabeth Activity Room at 1:30 p.m. each Friday. If you don’t know how to play, come and down and learn. It’s actually very simple.

Skip Bo and Uno will be in the St. Elizabeth Activity Room each 1st Tuesday afternoon beginning at 1:30 p.m.

We have also placed a jigsaw puzzle on the table in the St. Elizabeth library for anyone wanting a little something extra to occupy your time during the week and the Dakim game is always

available also in the Library as well. We have had several residents including Ruby Hoffmeyer and Mildred Morris already huddled around the puzzle table this week and they are making good progress and getting the first puzzle complete.

Watch your calendars and join in the activities!

Seminoles – may explain why they were called “The Five Civilized Tribes.” My own longtime interests have been focused on my neighbors, the Mississippi Choctaws. They signed their first treaty with the United States in 1786, defining the boundaries of the Choctaw Nation, all of what is now Mississippi. In each of the six following treaties, land was ceded to the government.

In 1830 the last of the Choctaw land was given up. The treaty called for the removal of the natives to Oklahoma Indian Territory. The program covered a period of twenty years or so. Difficulty in locating “passengers” for the journey was an ongoing problem, and many who were relocated returned. Those who then lived in “the shadows” in Mississippi for half a century survived under the worst of living conditions. Finally responding to pleas for help in 1918, the Bureau of Indian Affairs purchased land in the central part of the state for a reservation and created an agency in 1928. Life on the reserved land improved slowly; however, the stage was set for dynamic change in 1945 with the creation of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.

Under the leadership of recent chieftains, the band has made unbelievable progress in improving the lives of its people. Youth no longer have to go to federal school’s in Oklahoma in order to get their high school education. A hundred or more students are in college annually, whereas, as late as 1950 there were none. The reservation has a health center with hospital, nursing care, and retirement facility. Employment in Choctaw industrial activities is high. The most outstanding visible feature at the reservation as one enters it today is the hotel-gaming scene, The Silver Star (10 stories) and the Golden Moon (20 stories).
