The Messenger King of Glory Lutheran Church 1 The Messenger - October 2020 From Pastor Ruth Ann October Outdoor Worship and Recommendations As long as the weather holds, outdoor in-person Prayer Services will continue. Come and worship at 9:00am or 11:15am. This service is intended for the whole church, everyone, whether you typically worshipped on Saturdays or Sundays. Prayer service is a short 25 minute worship with limited liturgy, sermon, prayers and no singing. (The birds or the geese sing for us!) On the last Sunday of the month, we partake of Holy Communion, the Lord’s Supper. Currently our Bishop Gonia and the Rocky Mountain Synod Council’s recommendations are to continue suspending in-person worship through the end of the year. You can read them at rmselc.org under the Congregations tab / Responding to the Covid-19 Pandemic / August 4 recommendations. https://www.rmselca.org/sites/rmselca.org/files/media/con tinuing_our_life_as_church_becoming_8.4.20.pdf The Bishop and Council make four different recommendations about worship, low risk in-person gatherings, ministry for and about populations most at risk and asking questions about our ‘church becoming’. Here is recommendation 1: It is recommended that congregations and communities of faith continue to prioritize worship opportunities that are safe, accessible, invitational, meaningful, and sustainable. The use of an online/digital platform remains the highest recommended format for corporate worship through at least the end of the calendar year. Any in-person worship experience should prioritize an outdoor venue, small groups, physical distancing, and the use of face coverings. There is a strong likelihood that corporate in-person worship that is able to include all parishioners inside of a church building will not be advisable well into 2021. KOG’s Community Safety Team continues to meet. Our next topic is the whole of our building’s ventilation system including: furnaces, air conditioner, and cleaning of duct work. We will keep you updated as that work progresses. I realize that continuing to not gather in the sanctuary might bring heart-ache or relief. This has gone on longer than any of us expected. God will sustain us. God will guide us. God will gather us again! Don’t hesitate to call or email me at 303-854-4737, [email protected] . Walking it in faith with you, Pastor Ruth Ann Pastor Deb’s Faith Formation Notes How are you doing? It’s something we say when we greet one another, especially these days. But how are you really doing? More and more I hear that people are reaching a point of exhaustion. Exhausted by COVID concerns regarding health, safety, economics, school and work. Exhausted by fires and concern for wilderness places we love, homes, lives and the impact of smoke. Exhausted by concerns for our country and community as we approach Election Day and continue to wrestle with racism and injustice. If you find yourself exhausted, anxious or overwhelmed please know that you are not alone. We are a community of faith created for such a time as this. Reach out to a friend, neighbor, counselor or pastor if you need support. And please be that support for those you know who need it. Call a friend, text your neighbor, pray with a child. Psalm 46 begins, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change…” God is with us even now and calls us to be a very present help to one another. God’s Work Our Hands On Sunday, September 13, congregations throughout the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America participated in local service opportunities. Loveland Lutherans sent 43 people out to 43 locations to chalk encouraging messages and raised more than $2000 for Loveland Habitat for Humanity. Thank you to everyone who donated to Habitat, nominated people to be chalked and chalked driveways and sidewalks! Sky Ranch Lutheran Camp – Cameron Peak Fire Update The Cameron Peak Fire started August 13. Sky Ranch was evacuated on August 14 and continues to be under evacuation orders. Thank you for all your prayers for Sky Ranch. For the latest news check the Sky Ranch Lutheran Camp Facebook page or website www.skyranchcolorado.org. The KOG Leadership Team gave $1000 from our budget originally designated for camp scholarships to

support Sky Ranch. The camp needs continued support due to the challenges presented by the pandemic and now the fire. Thank you for your generosity! Blessing of the Animals Loveland Lutherans invite you to our annual Blessing of the Animals on St. Francis Day. Sunday, October 4 at 4:00pm at Trinity Lutheran Church, Loveland. Bring your pet for this outdoor service of blessing! We will sign-in, wear masks and practice social distancing. See you there! Music Notes from Dr. Jane Sunday School Opening If you drove by KOG September 20, you might have heard a terrible storm coming from the church yard by the play equipment. Yes, the Sunday School children created a sound track for the story of Jonah and the Whale. There was wind, thunder, lightning, rain, and a celebration when Jonah finally went to Ninevah! On September 27th, children explored playing music with handchimes. The handchimes are particularly suitable for smaller people because of their weight, size, and cost. Children learned the proper method for playing the handchimes and then accompanied a familiar children’s sacred song with different chords. Make sure your children don’t miss out on these new adventures by RSVPing to Pastor Deb's invitations. Even though we can’t sing the familiar songs for children, music can still be part of the life of the church for our children! Special Services King of Glory will be offering two special services: one during October and one in November. The favorite, Celtic Service, is scheduled for the weekend of October 17/18, so get ready to sing along to the “folk-sounding” works from this service.

November 14/15 service is called “Come Sunday—Faith through Music.” The title, Come Sunday, is one of the works from Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concerts, but we will have more music styles and Lessons, ranging from Bach to Martin Luther to contemporary Christian selections. Don’t miss this special offering of music and Scripture Lessons. Dr. Jane Andrews, [email protected] 319-830-7895

Worship, Grow, Serve Generosity Appeal Our fall generosity appeal will begin in October! With your gifts we were able to accomplish great things in 2019-20. Thank you for responding to God’s love and grace. Together our gifts are changing people’s lives! We believe God has more plans for us in 2021. Look in your home mail boxes for information coming soon! Transparency in our 2020 Budget In December of 2019 at our annual meeting, a congregational vote approved a budget for 2020. Due to the pandemic and restrictions of meeting in person for seven months, that budget simply didn’t meet our needs. For example, roughly 30 packets have been mailed each week to our home-centered members containing sermons and prayers. That increased our postage costs. Therefore at the September meeting of the Leadership Team, revisions were made to more accurately reflect spending needs for the remainder of the year. In addition we were able to give more to our outreach partners in categories which were not going to be spent. We voted to give Family Promise $500 due to the fact we could not house our homeless families. If you have questions, please talk to Pr Ruth Ann. Fall Theological Conference Pastors in the Rocky Mountain Synod meet twice a year: once in the spring during Synod Assembly and once in the fall for Theological Conference. That event just concluded and was very powerful. We learned from Rev. Dr. Reggie L. Williams. He is an Associate Professor of Christian Ethics at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago’s Hyde Park, and ordained in the Progressive National Baptist Convention. (reggielwilliams.com) As an expert in Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Dr. Williams taught about Bonhoeffer’s theology which was shaped in part during his experiences in Harlem, but then surfaced in his opposition to Hitler’s regime. We also were blessed and graced by the presence of Ms. Cleo Parker Robinson (cleoparkerdance.org) and a few members of her dance ensemble moving as our daily devotions. This was a soul searching week in light of our brothers and sisters of color. Pr Deb and I thank you for supporting us in continuing education. Pastor Ruth Ann
