Vestry and Executive Committee The vestry meets the third Tuesday of each month in Trezevant Hall. The Executive Com-mittee meets the Thursday before vestry at 5:30 pm in the old school science lab on the 3rd floor of the Evans Building. These meetings are open to the parish. There are so many events and classes at GSL Church this fall. I also hope you will read and prayerfully consider one of our new Wednesday evening classes in October, such
as Father Joseph’s Bible Study. I hope that you will make it a priority to be present on Sunday mornings at one of our classes, whether for children or for adults. Something is in the air at GSL, and it is a word about the Gospel that we need to hear. And I hear this word of grace coming from all of our fine, trained catechists and teachers. Harriet Roberts, our director of Christian education, gracefully and thoughtfully publicizes all of our offerings for Sunday school. If you need to speak with her or email with her (or me) regarding what class is best for you or someone in your family, please do so.
Our goal is to offer classes and events for all ages that inspire our people to lifelong Christian education in the Episcopal tradition. Knowing Christ is a lifelong journey, no matter where we start. Indeed, in light of the Christian faith, knowing Christ is a journey that will take eternity. Therefore, I invite you to one of our many classes and events. More importantly, however, I invite you to go deeper in the mystery of faith. All of us, no matter where we are, can listen for the call of Christ and can foster a deeper awareness of God’s mercy and presence. It is so important for each of us to realize that no one person fully grasps the fullness of God’s love and presence. All of us need to go deeper.
One 17th century Anglican theologian, Edward Reynolds, who was Bishop of Norwich (England), wrote something similar: “It were almost a contradiction in anything save God’s mercy, to be
so deep that no thought can fathom it, and yet so obvious that each eye may see it . . .” Going deeper for some of us means that we will learn simplicity. Going deeper for others will mean just that—moving beyond simplicity. But all of us must move because we follow the example and mysterious presence of Jesus Christ.
I cannot think of one single person in the Gospels who, after having interacted with Christ through conversation or a meal, was not changed in some way. Why would we expect anything different for any of us today? I invite you, therefore, to be changed in the company of friends who are on a lifelong journey at GSL Church. The Reverend Richard Lawson

Followed by an Autumn Afternoon on the Lawn: brats, hotdogs, German pota-to salad, pumpkin crisp, our own Johnny Norris and his band Walrus, lots of fun activities for the kids.
We’ll be finished with lunch in plenty of time for you to go home and gather your pets for the annual Blessing of the Animals service at 4:00 pm in the nave.

A Look into the Public Schools at the October 18th 3rd Thursday Dinner
Continuing our series of programs involving our members, Mary Earheart-Brown, Director of Strategic Planning for the Volunteer Services Department of the Memphis City Schools, will speak to the October 18th Third Thursday dinner. She will give us an insider’s update on the consolidation of the Memphis and Shelby County School systems and tell us about opportunities for interested persons to work directly with students who need help. With all of the news accounts involving legal issues with the schools, it is easy to lose sight of the individual students and their needs.
Third Thursday dinners are open to members of all ages, but are particularly aimed at the empty nester set. If you are a new empty nester, we especially invite you to come. Third Thursday dinners are planned to build community and to help us get to know each other better as friends. They involve as little work as possible and a lot of fun times. You’ll feel very welcome and discover another delightful dimension of your GSL experience.
Our evenings always follow the same format: drinks, nibbles and conversation beginning at 6:30 pm in Trezevant Hall, dinner promptly at 7:00, and a speaker to follow. You’ll be home by 8:30 having had a wonderful time for a most reasonable fee. We always are casual, so do join in. We have to let our hosts know how many people to prepare for, so do make reservations by calling Lucy at 272-7425 or emailing her at [email protected] by Tuesday, Oct. 16. Needlework Guild
Do you enjoy needlework or would you like to learn? Is your passion knitting, cross-stitch, embroidery,
crewel embroidery, needlepoint, quilting, smocking or tatting? If it is, grab your sewing things, or pick out a project and make plans to join other ladies (and ladies in training) on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 4–8 pm. Please bring a sack supper. You need to be 10 or older and want to spend some time visiting and stitching. There will be plenty of opportunity to share what you have made and admire what others have created. We will share skills and enjoy being together in Trezevant Hall.

NEWS OF BYGONE DAYS50 years ago (1962): GSL CABOOSE DEDICATED AT HOMECOMING: Thanks to the ingenuity and generosity of Wayne Allen, GSL School has its own caboose! Mr. Allen acquired the caboose and has refurbished it to serve as a concession stand and announcer’s box. Pictured in the Commercial Appeal last week, the caboose was dedicated at the Homecoming football game. The Saints’ victory made for a perfect day.
25 years ago (1987): ASSISTANT RECTOR ARRIVES: The Rev. and Mrs. John Paul Jones and their three children, Devereaux, Rebecca, and Clarkson, are now at home at 1500 Vance Avenue, having arrived on October 16. The entire Parish bids them welcome, and we are grateful to God that He has called us all to labor together at Grace-St. Luke’s. Mr. Jones has already begun his work as Headmaster of the Day School and in the Parish.

The 31st Annual Diocesan Convention will be held at Grace-St. Luke’s on Thursday, Nov. 15, through Saturday, Nov. 17. This is an opportunity for our community to share the hospitality and warmth we experience on a regular basis. We need lots of help to make this event a success. Participating in the race is a great way to get moving and support the mission to make Memphis healthier. For the past two years, the GSL Angels have won awards. In 2010, the GRACE award: the team with the largest number of participants! And in 2011, the CHALLENGE award: the team with the most additional dollars raised from the previous year!

In this column dedicated to Pastoral Care, a variety of prayers for our spiritual journeys are often offered. The reason is best summed up in the words of Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic Worker movement: “I must write about prayer because it is as necessary to life as breathing. It is food and drink . . . Prayer is an exercise, sometimes dull, sometimes boring, but it brings health to the soul, which needs exercise just as the body does” -Praying in the Presence of Our Lord with Dorothy Day by David Scott.
Any of us who have been or are presently caregivers for loved ones who are dying, know all too well the huge hunger and tremendous thirst for health of the soul. We know how prayer-exercise can be difficult during this time. We have no clue as to how to talk about death and dying. We may be physically, emotionally and/or spiritually exhausted. We may think that we lack the words to pray, the time to pray or even the will to pray.

When? Sunday, Oct. 21, before all 3 services
How? Make your favorite entrée, side, soup, or dessert and package it in a disposable, freezer-safe container. We need meals of all sizes: individual, for 2, and family size. We will collect donations in Trezevant before each service.
What If I don’t cook? Donate a gift certificate to Holiday Deli and Ham, and meals will be purchased on your behalf.

Bible Study: Food for the Journey: It is not easy to live the Christian way of life but then again Jesus, never said it would be easy. Part of the frustration is how do we know how Jesus wants us to live for him. One of the first steps is simply to get to know and review the word of God in the context of Holy Scripture. Food for the journey is a small group Bible study designed for a maximum of 12 people. The group will gather weekly to examine one text of Scripture from the upcoming Sunday’s lectionary. This group is not designed to be “heavy academic exegetical” examination of the text. Rather, the group will use the Af-rican Bible study method to examine not only the history of the text but also what source of meaning we can derive from these Scripture text and how we can apply them in our day-to-day lives.
Members are asked to commit to attending this group weekly be-ginning Wednesday, October 3rd through Wednesday, November 7th. Members are not all expected to use a particular translation of the Bible so please bring your favorite translation. Grace-St. Luke’s Book Group: Now is your chance to spend some time with some classics, some favorites, and some real treasures. This group will read and discuss selections from various collections of short stories (Alice Munro, Flannery O’Connor, Willa Cather, and Anton Chekhov). The group will read one novel; A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving and, finally, they will read a selection from the poetry of Mary Oliver and Billy Collins. (The reading list is on p. 9). Youth Confirmation Class with Father JosephFrom October 14–November 4, Confirmation class will take the place of J2A Sunday School. If you have already completed Confirmation class and are already confirmed, the class is still relevant and interest-ing. In fact, those who have already been confirmed will enjoy the lively conversation and discussion. Father Joseph will tackle some practical, some complicated, and some philosophical questions.
Do we really believe in a Holy Ghost? Why does God always have to be referred to as a man….. Isn’t God really a woman? Is the Bible really the word of God? What’s up with this whole “body” and “blood” of Jesus thing? It sounds really disgusting if you ask me.
If you are a young person, and have ever wondered any of these ques-tions, then confirmation class with Father Joseph is for you.
So come join Father Joseph, Jim Greer, and Peria Gober and some of your friends for fun and an opportunity to talk candidly about God!

We have lots of fun events to tell you about for October!
First I want to let you know about a new initiative at GSL, the Middle School Speaker Series. Launched this fall, the purpose of the series is to bring transformational community leaders onto campus to share life lessons and words of wisdom that will resonate with our 5th-8th grade students. The bonus is, the speaker series is open to anyone from the GSL community, so please feel free to join us. On Monday, Oct. 22, at about 8:30 am we will have Toney Armstrong, Director of the Memphis Police Department. You may be interested to know that next is writer and GSL parishioner Dan Conaway, who will speak to students on Monday, Oct. 29, at 8:05 am in the church. We will let you know about other scheduled speakers in the next issue.

These events are scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 18, at 8:30 am and Saturday, Oct. 20, at 9:00 am in the Anchor Center. It’s a great opportunity for prospective families to come take a look at our facilities and all we have to offer for students in PK-8th grade. We appreciate your help in spreading the word!
Finally, for those of you with a special toddler in your life, please join us for Glad Monster/Sad Monster Story Time on Halloween, Wed., Oct 31, from 9:00 to 9:30 am in the Anchor Center Library. Gregory Maytan, Solo Violin Concert
Oct. 21 ~ 6:30 pm ~ at GSL
The Luna Nova Ensemble will present its violinist, Gregory Maytan, in a solo violin concert surveying masterworks for the violin from the 16th to the 21st centuries. Maytan has performed extensively in
Europe and the US. Recent engagements include multiple performances of the Paganini, Sibelius, Bruch, Barber and Tchaikovsky Violin Concertos with orchestras in Nevada, Indiana, Michigan, South Dakota and Sweden. He has also performed as a soloist in the Paganini and Tchaikovsky concertos in tours throughout China, Austria, Hungary and Slovakia under conductors such as Dennis Russell-Davies, Raymond Harvey and Evind Gullberg-Jensen.
An avid chamber musician, he has participated in the prestigious chamber music festival ‘Musikveckan’ in Junsele, Sweden; the Belvedere Chamber Music Festival in Memphis, TN; the CICA festival in Eureka Springs, AR; and the Sagatuck Chamber Music Festival in Sagatuck, MI. He has performed at venues such as Ravinia, Tanglewood and the Chicago Cultural Center. Recently he performed live on Chicago Public Radio as part of the Dame Myra Hess series. Maytan’s first CD, consisting of
music from his native Scandinavia, was selected by The Strad as the top recital CD of April 2009 and highly praised by Strings Magazine and the American Record Guide. Two more recordings, one featuring the sonatas of Faure, Franck and the Chausson Poeme and the second more music by Grieg and Maier will be available for purchase soon.
Gregory earned his doctorate in violin performance from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, where he studied with the renowned violinists Miriam Fried and Paul Biss. Other teachers include Igor Petruschevski (London), Federico Agostini (Bloomington) and Alexander Kerr (Bloomington). He is currently performing on the 1766 ‘ex-Loeb’ Nicolo Gagliano.

Rhodes College Women’s Chorus visit GSL on Sunday, October 28
The Rhodes College Women’s Chorus will sing the 10:30 service on October 28. The chorus is directed by Mona Kreitner and accompanied by Debbie Smith. They have led our service before, but it has been a while, so we welcome them back!

Cub Scout News
Many new boys have joined Cub Scout Pack 34 sponsored by Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church
during the past month. The pack now serves the families of over 70 boys.
T i g e r Cubs (first graders or ages 6-7) meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays each month at 5:30 pm. Wolf Cub Scouts (second graders or ages 7-8) meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 5:30 pm. Bear Cub Scouts (third graders or ages 8-9) meet on the 1st and 3rd Sundays at 5:00 pm. Webelos Scouts (grades 4 and 5 or ages 9-10) meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays at 5:30 pm. Meetings of the entire pack occur once a month as scheduled. Our October pack meeting will be Sunday, October 14th at 5:00 pm. Den meetings take place in the GSL Scout Room and pack meetings take place in McClure Hall. It is not too late for your son or grandson to experience the fun, learning, and adventure of Scouting. Our upcoming plans include assisting with the Blessing of the Pets as a service project, participating in Scout Base, a council-wide encampment, and the kickoff of our popcorn fundraiser which is what makes our program possible. For information on how you can support the Cub Scouts by purchasing popcorn, please contact Andy Surber at [email protected]. We are also starting a Uniform Exchange to collect “experienced” Cub Scout uniforms so every Scout can afford a complete uniform. If you have an “experienced” uniform you can contribute, please contact Katie Wright at [email protected].

GSL CHURCH YOUTH BASKETBALL 2012- 2013(1ST GRADE - 4TH GRADE)
ASSESSMENT TIME!It’s basketball season and to get it started we are having Skill Assessments as part of the registration process. GSL Church Youth Athletics provides this for all of its sports AND is a required activity for those children that sign up. This is not a tryout. It is simply a way to more evenly divide the teams. This SHOULD be fun for the kids.
Who:All 1st-4th graders registered for GSL Basketball. This is a required part of the registration process. All players need to attend.

What:Players will be assessed on Ball Handling, Passing, and Shooting. There will also be a scrimmage towards the end of the session.
Players: Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled time so you can get signed in and warmed up. Please come dressed and ready to play!
