Earn. Save. Give.
You’re probably used to hearing people in church talk
about giving. When was the last time in church that you
talked about earning or saving? Is it okay to earn
money? Is it okay to save for ourselves and our families?
John Wesley believed so. Wesley, the Christian evange-
list and founder of the Methodist movement, gave a re-
markable sermon called “The Use of Money.” In it, he
said that the important thing isn’t money itself but how
we use it. Wesley’s surprising advice still rings true to-
day: Earn all you can, Save all you can, Give all you
can.
During the month of November, our church will experience an exciting new stewardship focus,
Earn. Save. Give: Wesley’s Simple Rules for Money developed by popular author and Pastor
James A. Harnish. The focus centers on a book and DVD, in which Harnish describes Wesley’s
surprising advice and introduces us each week to faithful Christians who, like all of us, strug-
gle with money.
Nov. 1st - If You Could Ask for Anything (1 Kings 3:1-13)
Nov. 8th - Money -The Excellent Gift (Luke 12:42-48)
Nov. 15th - You Can’t Take It With You (Proverbs 13:11)
Nov. 22nd - How Far Will You Go? (Proverbs 11:25)
Copies of this book are available at the worship centers. Please pick one up and read the
first chapter before you come to worship on Nov. 1st.
I look forward to sharing this stewardship focus with you.
‘See you in worship.

middle of the night.” –JA

Leadership Team Meeting Notes Oct. 8, 2015
Place: Pocahontas Center, 7:00 pm
Attendance: Pastor Jerry, Chris Radig, Ray Timan, Carol Hallman, Linda Ferguson, Dixie
Gottsch, Carol McCurdy, Kathy Johnson, Donnie McLain, Sharon Hauswirth and Judy Pursley.
Chris opened the meeting. Pastor read from our Stewardship study book, Earn. Save. Give. Wes-
ley’s Simple Rules for Money, chapter 1 which covers Proverbs 3: 13-16. It says that we should
ask for wisdom rather than riches and all else will follow. He then said a prayer.
Donnie motioned and Carol H. seconded that the minutes be approved. Motion carried.
A combined Treasurer’s & Finance Ministry Team Report was given by Sharon. We received
more this year to date than in 2014 by $1056. Our total expenses to date are $1295 less than last
year. A motion was made by Sharon to accept the Treasurer’s report. Seconded by Dixie. Ap-
proved. The 2016 Budget was presented. Apportionments are less next year than this year. The
amount for the Conference Lay Member has been increased because the total did not reflect the
actual costs. There is a new line item for the Finance/Stewardship Drive. We removed the line
item “Historical Committee” with their $200. Our total budgeted expense for 2016 is $235,028.
A motion was made by Linda and seconded by Kathy to accept the amended budget. The 2016
Budget was approved.
Linda had us look over the 2016 Form 1-Pastoral Support Report that will be submitted at the
Charge Conference. She motioned to approve the Pastoral Support for the Charge Conference.
Ray seconded. Motion carried.
We discussed the Stephen Ministries in our church in 2016. Initial training will be in April.
Ministry Team Reports:
Soup and Pie: Chris said that tickets are going to be $7.00 for adults. The Soup and Pie Supper
will be on Nov.4th. Posters are going out.
Charge Conference: Pastor Jerry covered a variety of coming events. The Ingathering is Nov.7th
at Cherokee and the Charge conference is on Nov. 8th here at Hope (Poky Center). The book
Earn, Save, Give will be available Oct.18th. This is the book we will be studying for Steward-
ship Sundays. We also were able to look at the table of contents for Sent - Delivering The Gift of
Hope at Christmas by Jorge Acevedo. Some of us know him. This book will be our Advent
study guide. We looked at the Mission and Ministry Plan for 2016. Our goals are taken from
the Shift book. The other information is the same as last year. Pastor Jerry gave us an update on
Change a Child’s Story.
Worship: Carol reported that they meet next Monday at 5 p.m.
Education: Pastor reported that VBS has been moved to June 13-16 next year. Staff will arrive on the 12th.
Missions: Dixie reported The Mobile Food Pantry will be on Oct. 21 and need volunteers for the 11:00 a.m. set-
up and the 4:30 to 6:00 pm distribution. There is a need in our county for feeding the hungry. 50-60% of the chil-
dren in the county are on free or reduced lunches. Blanket Sundays are the next three Sundays. There will be a
skit on Oct. 11th about it.
Trustees: Linda [reporting for Don F.] said that custodial services in Plover will be done by Kathy L. The
phones in Havelock & Plover have been disconnected. A painting bid of $2,150 has been received for Plover.
UMW: Dixie said that they are working on gathering materials for ingathering kits and are due Oct.26th. This
should not only be a project of the women of the church but the entire church. Vespers has been changed to
Wednesday night, Dec. 2nd. Seven women went to the NW District Conference in Cherokee.
Nominations: Slots are being filled with some new folks mainly on the Trustees. The Mission Trip will be from
July 23-31 and we will be going to Eastern Kentucky. Travel time is 13 ½ hrs. one way. We will arrive on Sun-
day afternoon. On Oct.18th we will be welcoming 14 new members.

Please join us following worship at the
Pocahontas Center on Sunday, November 29th! We will
be decorating for the Advent/Christmas Season and then
sharing a meal together.
Everyone is welcome as we share this fun fellowship time
with our church family!
Hope UMW has some exciting news to share! For 2016 we will be introducing
an online circle group. The name of the circle will be Joy (Jesus-Others-You).
Four to six times throughout the year, you would receive an email which will in-
clude: (1) a scripture (2) a devotional (3) a mission statement about UMW (4) lo-
cal UMW opportunities (5) prayer requests.
This is an opportunity for those ladies of our church who are not able to be a part
of the circle groups that meet during the day or evening hours. You will be able
to read a scripture and companion devotional. You will know what is happening
locally and beyond in UMW missions. You can become involved in the many
projects that our local UMW supports if you wish. There will be no costs con-
nected to this group. If anyone wants, they could give a pledge or special offer-
ing when those are announced, but that will not be a requirement.
This is an opportunity that has come to our attention, and our local UMW officers
decided to see if there would be any interest. Those of you who have email ad-
dresses on file in the church office will receive an email later this year to see if
you are interested in becoming a part of Joy Circle. If your email address is not
on file in the office and you would like to be a part of this group or have any
questions, please contact the church office or Linda Ferguson dlfergu-
“Even when everyone else sees your faults, God still sees your strengths.”
