Salem UMC has the privilege of serving at the Shalom Center Soup Kitchen on Thursday, May 29. We make soup, enough sandwiches for everyone to take home after dinner and serve a hot meal provided by the Shalom Cen-ter to as many as 125 people or even more sometimes.

The whole process takes about 2 1/2 hours some time between 2:00 and 5:30 p.m. (depending on which you choose - soup or sandwiches or serving). There is no cleanup. The center handles that. That is a very tiny gift of your time to provide so much for so many. Fifty million people in the U.S. – one in four children - don’t’ know where their next meal is coming from. Directors Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush examine the issue of hunger in America through the lens of three people struggling with food insecurity: Barbie, a single Philadelphia mother who grew up in poverty and is trying to provide a better life for her two kids; Rosie a Colorado fifth-grader who often has to depend on friends and neighbors to feed her and has trouble concen-trating in school; and Tremonica, a Mississippi second-grader whose asthma and health issues are exacerbated by the largely empty calories her hardworking mother can afford. Ultimately, A Place at the Table shows us how hunger poses serious economic, social and cultural implications for our nation, and that it could be solved once and for all, if the American public decides – as they have in the past – that making healthy food available and affordable is in the best

interest of us all.

RESURRECTION – Allowing Us to Claim

Victory and Power

for Daily Living.

My Easter message reminded us that Christ’s resurrection is the pivot upon which our faith turns and our destiny hinges. Jesus proved once again that He is very alive at Salem United Methodist Church! Here is

the living proof of great things He did during the recent Holy Day celebrations:

- On Palm Sunday, each Sunday School classroom was assigned a day from Holy Week where they decorated their room with that theme. The children collected eggs from each room and turned them in for a special prize. Later that afternoon, weeks of hard work and practice were celebrated when we hosted - Last Words

of Christ – a Sacred Cantata performed by Circuit 41 Combined UMC Chorus. Their music was inspiring.

- Maundy Thursday Service we gave thanks to God, because in God’s own free gift of love (Jesus) God

reached out to us.

- Good Friday Service; on this night we gathered to remember with love and tears the suffering and death of Jesus of Nazareth. We came to this worship in deep repentance for our individual sins and in recommitment

of our lives to end suffering, pain, and death in all times and all places.

- Easter Sunrise Service - Praise the Lord! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Around Christ’s table we com-muned in love and fellowship supreme as we partook of Love Feast, or Agape Meal, a Christian fellowship meal recalling the meals Jesus shared with disciples during his ministry and expressing koinonia (community, sharing, fellowship). And through Liturgical ministry we expressed our gratefulness for being lead from

darkness into light.

I am grateful for the things that You have done Yes I am grateful for the victories we've woncould go on and on and on about Your works Because I'm grateful, grateful so grateful just to praise you, Lord Flowing from my heart Are the issues of my heart Is gratefulness

Hezekiah Walker - Grateful

I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you,

you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15: 5, NIV)

- Easter Sunday Service at Salem United Methodist Church overflowed with family and friends who bulged our pews to celebrate the Resurrection of our Savior and Lord. It truly was a glorious day! Our youth lifted

their voices in total praise to God. Worship was alive with powerful and uplifting praise.

As I turned off the lights and locked the doors to the church, I thought about how many Easters the church family and myself have had in our life? Let’s not forget all those Maundy Thursdays and Good Fridays ser-

vices as well.

Yet, every Easter as I prepare my sermon I must confess I get a little anxious and wonder whether I can cap-ture the intensity, the power, the mystery and the reality of the Resurrection. Is there anything fresh that I can say after so many Easters that I’ve preached or you have heard? Is there anything fresh that I can say that will fire up your imagination and will nurture you with a message of hope, joy, love, life and God's in-

credible Good News – Jesus Christ?

Now that the lights are out and the church doors are locked on this Resurrection Sunday, is Easter over? Shouldn’t Easter be more than just a one-day event? Apostle Paul believed that the resurrection of Christ was more than a one-day a year holiday. He wrote - I want to know Christ and the power of his res-urrection (Philippians 3:10). Is there a secret about the Resurrection and its lasting power that Paul longed

to experience? Is it possible for us to discover this secret and use it to impact our lives every day of the year?

Let me give you several power-packed reasons why the Resurrection is important to you and every other be-

liever every day of every year:

By the Resurrection we are certain that Jesus is the Son of God. Romans 1:4;

By the Resurrection we have motivation to live a selfless life of service. 2 Corinthians 5:15;

By the Resurrection we are filled with hope regardless of life’s circumstances. 1 Peter 1:3;

By the Resurrection we are assured of our bodily resurrection after death. Romans 8:11;

By the Resurrection Jesus guaranteed us eternal life. John 11:25-26.

Easter, for me, is the most special and sacred day of the church year. I willingly pro-claim that the Resurrection of Jesus excites me more than I can say about anything else in my faith. Are you ready to make this 2014 Easter season a life-long event? Are you willing to share the hope that is found in Romans 8:28: We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose? Go forth in Jesus joy. You have God’s Word on it. Jesus is alive! He is

risen! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

From Our High School Graduates

I can't believe that I am graduating high school in like 2 months. Time sure flies by. My plans for the future are that I will be attending College of Lake County, and will be Majoring in Elementary Education. I would love to teach 4th graders! Also I was planning on being a part of Army National Guard. But my future is at a stand-still, due to the fact that I am trying to join the Army National Guard. So I'm not sure whether when the fall comes around I'll be attending College of Lake County, or I will be off at Basic training. But whichever way it ends up, I know that I will be loving it! My church family has been absolutely the best! I love participating in the Praise Power, the junior choir, adult choir, and bells! It is so much fun!! I know that I will always be attend-ing Salem United Methodist church! Lisa Hufnagle
