A trip to Atlantic City By Mely Alcazar

Cardano; Sylvia Calalang; Aurora

Albano; Jay Alcazar; and Manny

Lopez.

The fun started for everyone as

soon as we leave Maryland. We

played bingo and had several

raffles for cash prizes and

various gift items. A light snack

with drinks was also served. As

soon as we arrived in Atlantic

City, each one was so excited to

partake in the many activities

the place has to offer. Some

rushed to go to their favorite slot

machines; others went shopping

at the various outlet stores; and

a number of people just went

board walking and sight-seeing.

These are just some of the

things anyone can do in one day

and it makes a difference when

you can spend a day full of fun

and happiness with a wonderful

group of friends and family.

All our invited to join us again to

the next Mabuhay Atlantic City

Mabuhay Inc. held its’ annual

October 10, 2010 when it

opened its 2010-2011 School

Year at the Greenbelt

the Open House were two of its

founding members, Lulu

Presidents Jimmy Cardano and

Mencie Hairston, and current

Mabuhay President Lita Dialino.

New and returning students

came with their parents who

were briefed of the objectives

and typical Sunday afternoon

class at MICS. MICS, now on its

20th year run, is designed to

teach the common bonds of

history, geography, and culture

between the United States and

the Philippines. It aims to en-

hance the self-esteem and

“cultural competence” of young

Filipino Americans – children

who know, share, and are

proud of their parents’ customs

and traditions.

The current MICS Staff makes

learning fun with hands-on

activities in arts and crafts,

music, folk dancing, literature,

Filipino-American history, and

Filipino language. MICS’

students form friendships with

other Filipino-American children

who share similar l i fe

experiences and meet adults

opportunity to perform in

Mabuhay Inc. functions and

fulfill their school volunteer

hours requirement at MICS

when they join as “ates/kuyas”

who assist the staff.

MICS is still accepting students

from ages 4 to 15 years old to

join them every Sunday

afternoon from 2:30 to 4:30

P.M. MICS runs until May 22,

which means "an honor given"

to someone. Last October 28,

2009, a tribute in honor of Ms.

Lulu Alexander was held in her

recognition as one of the

founding members of Mabuhay,

Inc. Organization. The stability

and the vast growth of the or-

ganization are attributed

significantly to her strong

influence to the community.

She plays a major role in

propagating the organization

to society.

The fundraising event was held

very successfully. The excellent

participation of our members

and guests, and their generous

support in light of today's

accomplishments. The night

ended with many beautiful

memories and confirmed once

again that Mabuhay, Inc is one

solid organization.

Winter 2010 Page 7

A historic milestone has been reached! Mabuhay, Inc. celebrated 25 years of cultural education and community service this past August

2010 with a gala held at the Sheraton Hotel in Beltsville MD. The event was very well attended with the ballroom packed to full capacity

with members and friends who supports Mabuhay, Inc.’s goals and mission. The gala were co-chaired by Liezl Argente and Alexis Isip, and

they were joined by the officers, board of directors, board of trustees, and Mabuhay members as their committee team. The night opened

with a welcome message from the President, the Filipino and American national anthems sung by our culture school children, and an

invocation by Fr. Pete Literal.

The highlights of the programme were: Past and present Presidents took turns in presenting different programs offered by the associa-

tion which include the Children Culture School held every Sunday; programs to honor our Senior Citizens, various fundraising and outreach

programs such as the Dental Mission, Batang Pinanga in Cebu, and many more. A moving rendition of the songs “Pilipinas Kong Mahal”

and “Lawiswis Kawayan” were performed by the Mabuhay Choral Group directed by Dr. Robert Bagtas.

Children from our Culture School danced the subli. The Mabuhay, Inc. Youth performed a lively tinikling and even had an encore with a

couple of brave volunteers from the audience. A surprise modern dance number was presented by our very own officers, board of

directors, and board of trustees.

DJ NIKKI’s great song selections did not give anyone a choice but to get up and show their moves on the dance floor. DJ NIKKI also

provided the dance steps for all the line dances.

Throughout the night, many items were raffled. Congratulations to all the winners!. The programme ended with the blowing of the

anniversary cake by all the Mabuhay, Inc. Officers, Board of Directors, and Board of Trustees with

everyone singing the Mabuhay song.

The guests, cultural presentations, music and dancing, the food, and let’s not forget, the many

hours provided by all volunteers, were the factors that made this a very successful event. The

guests wanted to dance the night away, but with anything fun, we wanted our guests to leave

wanting more so we ended at midnight with a promise that another event would come very soon,

and yes, all are invited to PASKO 2010!

Thank you to all the members, friends, and supporters who came and celebrated this momentous

milestone. You are what make Mabuhay, MABUHAY!!!
