Chaos in the Sky Linked to Unpronounceable Volcano in Iceland

By Hannah Williams On April 15, 2010, Iceland's volcano, Eyjafjallajökull erupted for the second time in less than a month, causing an enormous cloud of ash to drift far into the air. In turn, it caused the worst flight disruption in history, that wasn't related to wartime. The volcano had been dormant for about two centuries until the first eruption. The ash cloud drifted all over northern Europe, and ended up stranding travelers on six continents. Millions of passengers from North America to Asia were stranded or delayed from reaching their destinations. With airports being shut down for almost a week in Europe, the airlines of course lost a great deal of money, $1.7 billion dollars to be exact. For the first three days of the grounding, the airlines lost about $40 million dollars of revenue a day. Some airlines are requesting governments come up with ways to compensate them due to the extraordinary loss of income. The eruption didn't just cause airlines to suffer, but left many expectant passengers stranded at airports all over the world. At one point, 29 percent of worldwide aviation and 1.2 million passengers a day we affected by the closing of airlines that were ordered by European governments, fearing the volcanic ash would pose a threat to planes and their passengers. Flights started to resume on April 23, after about 10,000 flights were canceled that week. Officials from the Irish Aviation Authority stated that Ireland could be faced with volcanic ash still drifting south off and on during the summer months. It seems that the inconvenience of the volcanic ash for travelers and the loss of revenue to airlines all over the world, is not over yet.

Sea Lion Gone Wild! By: Baylee Steelman

On Wednesday, May 5th, 2010, a sea lion pup was captured after hiding under a San Diego police car for four hours in the middle of the road. Police Sgt. Knish says officers got a call at about 4 A.M. Wednesday that the pup was crossing a street in the Ocean Beach area. Knish says that a police officer parked in the middle of the road and went to investigate. That is when the sea lion came out from under another car and went under the police car. Rescuer Kevin Robinson grabbed it by the tail and put it in a net. Robinson says the pup, who is less than a year old, was dehydrated but uninjured. He says the pup weighs about 25 pounds, which is less than half of what it should weigh. Robinson says it will be released within two months, and SeaWorld experts received the growling sea lion later that day.

Teacher Remembers By Brooke Berger I sent Mrs. Wagoner some questions through email recently and she respectively sent the answers to Mrs. Allen. Here they are: 1. What is most beautiful about GA? “The mountains and rivers are just gorgeous here! There are some areas with waterfalls that are pretty amazing too! Georgia truly is a beautiful state.” 2. What do you miss most about IL? “I miss my family and friends terribly. It is about a 12 hour drive so I don't get to see my loved ones near enough. Of course I miss all of you at BC too! Seriously - I do!” 3. What kind of career do you have? “I'm currently working with an after school program called YES (youth enrichment services). I also substitute teacher during the day at the grade schools. I have learned it is not easy being a sub. The students will try to get away with anything and everything!! They didn't know who they were messing with when I walked in though! ;) So from now on, you all better be nice to the subs! The students in Georgia definitely need to be nicer to me.” 4. Have you visited any exciting places? “Georgia is a very historical place. Milledgeville, where we live, is located right in the middle of the state and used to be the capital of Georgia. During the Civil War, General Sherman and 30,000 of his troops marched through Milledgeville ransacking local establishments, houses and the surrounding countryside. There is supposedly an underground tunnel that was built during the Civil War that stretches from the Governor's mansion to a military base. Its purpose was to serve the Governor and high-ranking officials as an emergency exit when under attack. I have been to Augusta, GA which is a beautiful area as well. For all of you golf fans, that is where the Masters is held. “ 5. Do you miss teaching B.C. math? “I miss teaching at BC more than you know!! I miss all of my students like crazy and all of my co-workers! The kids and people I work with here are nice, but don't compare to all of you!” 6. Do you have any advice for us 8th graders for high school? “My advice for high school is to do your best! High school will be a fun and exciting time in your life. You still have to prioritize though. Academics should come first. Remember, decisions you make in high school can affect you for the rest of your life! So make some good ones!” 7. How long have you wanted to teach? “When I was little, I wanted to be a vet. By high school, I decided I wanted to be a nurse. Finally, my senior year in high school, I made my final decision to become a teacher. “ 8. Have you been to or lived in Atlanta? “We live southeast of Atlanta. My husband and I went to Turner Field in Atlanta in April to watch the Cubs play the Braves. We had a great time cheering on the Cubs in Atlanta!” 9. How's the weather? “Gorgeous! It doesn't get very cold here in the winter. Can you believe this - when snow is in the forecast, they cancel school! True story! It hardly ever snows here so when it does, they cancel school! This summer will be very hot and humid though.” 10. A lot of 8th graders want to know if you'll be here for graduation. Will you be? “ I can't make any promises, but you never can tell.... “

Thanks so much Mrs. Wagoner.

By Alexa Johnson How come you play at a recital, but recite at a play? Why is it that people say they "slept like a baby" when babies wake up every two hours? If people from Poland are called Poles, why aren't people from Holland called Holes? If pro is the opposite of con, is progress the opposite of congress? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth beeth? If 7-11 is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, why are there locks on the doors?

Is there another word for synonym?

Isn't it a bit unnerving that doctors call what they do "practice"?
