First Penance: February 25, 2017 at 10:00am First Penance will be on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 10:00am at the Cathedral. Families should arrive by 9:45am. First Communion Retreat: April 29, 2017, 8:45am-1:30pm This year’s First Communion Retreat will be held from 8:45am to 1:30pm in the Cathedral and Burke Hall. The retreat begins with Mass. Families are encouraged to join the students for Mass. First Communion Mass: May 6, 2017 The First Communion Mass will be on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 11am. Students should be in Burke Hall no later than 10:15am.

FIRST PENANCE: SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2017, 10:00AM

All students who are preparing for First Communion in May will make their First Penance (or First Confession) on Saturday, February 25. Please arrive at the Cathedral by 9:45am to find your pew, which will be assigned by class. Parents should sit with their students. We will begin with a brief communal prayer service at 10am. After the prayer service is completed, the teachers will assist the children to form lines and come quietly to the sacrament of penance. After leaving the confessional the children should go quietly to the designated place in the church to pray and do their penance.

As parents, you can help prepare your child for First Penance by going over the Ten Commandments, an examination of conscience, the Act of Contrition, and how to make a good confession. The children may go to confession face-to-face or kneel behind the screen. Please discuss this choice with your child.

Parents, teachers, and family members may go to confession after all the children. Once your child has made their confession and prayed their penance, you may quietly leave the church. We expect that all children will be done by noon.

Dress code for First Penance: All children should be dressed appropriately for Church. Appropriate

attire for boys (and male family members) is dress pants, khaki pants, or school uniform pants with a

collared shirt. Appropriate attire for girls (and female family members) is dress or dress pants/skirt with a

nice top. NO jeans or tennis shoes for boys or girls.

LA PRIMERA PENITENCIA: SÁBADO, 25 DE FEBRERO DEL 2017, 10:00AM

Todos los estudiantes que se preparan para la Primera Comunión en Mayo harán su Primera Penitencia (Primera Confesión) el sábado, 25 de febrero. Por favor, llegan a la Catedral a las 9:45am para encontrar su banco porque será asignado por clase. Los padres deben sentarse con sus estudiantes. Comenzaremos con un breve servicio de oración a las 10:00 am. Una vez completado el servicio de oración, los maestros ayudarán a los niños a formar líneas y llegar calladamente al Sacramento de la Confesión. Después de dejar el confesionario los niños deben ir calladamente a su lugar designado en la iglesia para orar y hacer su penitencia. Como padres, usted puede ayudar a preparar a su hijo/a para la Confesión repasando con él/ella los Diez Mandamientos, el Examen de Conciencia, el Acto de Contrición y como hacer una buena Confesión. Los niños pueden ir a la confesión cara a cara o de rodillas detrás de la ventanilla. Por favor discuta esta opción con su hijo/a. FIRST COMMUNION RETREAT: SATURDAY, APRIL 29, 2017, 8:45AM - 1:30PM

This will be an opportunity for your child to focus on Jesus, the sacrament of Holy Communion, and prayer. All children who are preparing for First Communion must attend the retreat. Families are asked to arrive to the Cathedral by 8:45am, as the retreat will begin with Mass at 9:00am. Parents are invited and encouraged to stay for the Mass. After Mass parents and family members will leave and the students will proceed to Burke Hall for a light breakfast snack . The students will have a morning of activities followed by lunch. Please ensure we are aware of any allergies so we can make alternate arrangements for your child’s snack and lunch. At 12:45pm we will be in the Cathedral to have a rehearsal for the First Communion Mass. Come pick up your child in Burke Hall at 1:30pm—please do not be late!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! We need parent volunteers to help us with the retreat. All volunteers must be fully-compliant with the Diocesan Child Protection Program. If you are interested and available to assist with all or part of the day (breakfast, lunch, or help with a station) please contact the RE Office, at 703-525-1300 or stm-dre@cathedralstm.org. RETREAT FEE: There is a $20 Retreat Fee to help defer the cost of the food and materials for the Retreat. Please complete the Retreat Permission slip and return it with the $20 retreat fee to the Religious Education Office by February 22, 2017.

EL RETIRO DE LA PRIMERA COMUNIÓN: SÁBADO, 29 DE ABRIL DEL 2017, 8:45AM - 1:30PM

Esta será una oportunidad para que su hijo/a se concentre en Jesús, el Sacramento de la Santa Comunión y la oración. Todos los niños que se preparan para la Primera Comunión deben asistir al retiro. Se les pide a las familias llegar a la Catedral a las 8:45 de la mañana ya que el retiro comenzará con una Misa a las 9:00 am. Los padres están invitados a quedarse para la Misa. Después de la Misa los padres y miembros de la familia se deben ir y los estudiantes se irán a Burke Hall para tomar un desayuno ligero. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION LITURGY SATURDAY, MAY 6, 2017, 11 AM

All First Communicants must be in Burke Hall no later than 10:15am to get lined up. Parents may sit in any unreserved pews in the Cathedral. While we understand First Communion day is special and family and friends may wish to give your child a gift for the Mass (i.e. Rosaries, prayer booklet, small purse or bag or gloves), we ask that children not carry these items in Mass. We will have the child leave them in Burke Hall if they arrive with them.

Traditionally the students are very dressed up for the First Communion Mass. If purchasing the attire for your child places a financial burden on your family, please let us know. We have a selection of dresses to loan and we can help with other items of clothing for boys and girls as well.

For the girls, they should wear a white dress with shoulders covered. If you purchase a spaghetti strap, tank, or halter top dress, your child must wear a white sweater to cover her shoulders throughout the Mass. Sleeveless dresses are acceptable as long as the top of the shoulder is covered. Girls should also wear white shoes with white socks or tights, and a white veil or headband (optional).

For the boys, they should wear a white or light-colored shirt, tie (white or other), dark dress pants and dress shoes, and a suit jacket (optional).

Following the First Communion Mass, there will be a reception in Msgr. Burke Hall for family and friends provided by the STM School Third Grade Room Parents. We invite you to join us. Please be sure to pick up your child’s First Communion certificate (and First Communion banner, if they made one during the retreat) in Burke Hall following the Mass.

LA LITURGIA DE LA PRIMERA COMUNIÓN SÁBADO 6 DE MAYO DEL 2017 A LAS 11 AM

Todos los estudiantes deben llegar a Burke Hall (el basement) a más tardar las 10:15am para ponerse en fila. Los padres pueden sentarse en las bancas que no están reservadas en la Catedral. Entendemos que el día de la Primera Comunión es especial y su familia y amigos podría darle a su hijo/a un regalo para la Misa (es decir: Rosarios, folleto de oración, pequeño monedero/bolsa o guantes), le pedimos que los niños no lleven estos artículos en la Misa. Si su hijo/a llegan con ellos tendrá que dejarlo en Burke Hall.

Tradicionalmente los estudiantes deben estar bien vestidos para la Misa de la Primera Comunión. Si la compra de un traje para su hijo/a es una carga financiera para su familia, por favor háganoslo saber. Tenemos una selección de vestidos que podemos presentarles y también podemos ayudarles con otras prendas de vestir para niños y niñas también.

Las niñas, deben llevar un vestido blanco con los hombros cubiertos. Si usted compra un vestido con tiras o sin mangas, su hija debe llevar un suéter blanco para cubrir sus hombros durante toda la Misa. Vestidos sin mangas son aceptables siempre y cuando la parte superior del hombro este cubierto. Las niñas también deben usar zapatos blancos con calcetines blancos o medias y un velo blanco.

Los niños, deben usar una camisa blanca o de color claro, una corbata (blanco o de otro tipo), pantalones de vestir de color oscuro y zapatos de vestir y una chaqueta de traje (opcional).

Después de la Misa, habrá una recepción en Burke Hall para familias y amigos ofrecida por la clase de tercer grado de la Escuela STM. Le invitamos a unirse a nosotros. PHOTOGRAPHY

A professional photographer has been hired for the First Holy Communion Liturgy to provide photos of the Mass for those who wish to purchase them. Family and friends are allowed to take pictures from their pews although tripods and stands may not be used. To preserve the sacredness of the Mass, pictures may not be taken from the aisles. The Parish Priests are available for pictures in Burke Hall following the Mass. Photography- A professional photographer will be hired. The company will take the following:
