Dear Friends:

Sincerely,Camille Jayne, President & CEOMeg Ferron, Board Chair

It was extremely heartwarming to feel the positive energy in the community for all the good work we did at The Community House (TCH) in 2013. That support was appreciated by our staff, volunteers and Board of Directors, who thank you for contributing to making 2013 an excellent growth year for TCH. We increased our Operating Cash Flow by 354%, by delivering significant top line revenue growth and gaining operational efficiencies across every area. This was a huge team effort – and that team includes all of you, our donors. You made the difference in helping us offer our outreach programs to underserved children and families in the tri-county area in our mission areas of education, culture and wellness: iCount™ Childhood Obesity Prevention, 21st

Century Leaders, Student Art Town Workshops, and our new Young Professionals Network who delivered 854 books to the new Judson Center family library.

You enabled us to deliver on our mission of strengthening community and “Creating More Vibrant Lives” within our “House”, as well as throughout the area. Thanks to generous donations from the Americana Foundation, the Michigan Design Center and a private donor, we were able to redecorate our main floor. Our beautiful look combined with exquisite, in-house TCH menu packages resulted in a 160% increase in wedding bookings, and 101% increase in corporate event sales. Our Early Childhood Center remained the only 5 star rated daycare center in Oakland County from Michigan’s Great Start to Quality, with 100% capacity. Our Professional Development Series and Symposium taught over 800 professionals. And our popular Youth Theater and Camps went year round.

While the weather took its toll on our 90 year old building, we were able to deliver excellent service in the safest of environments. Our new outdoor signs say it all: we provide community education; we are a nonprofit; and we are open to all.

200,000 people came through our doors to learn and connect, then patronized the many establishments in the Birmingham/Bloomfield area. TCH truly has a huge positive impact on the economic vitality of our surrounding neighborhoods.

Sincere thanks go to all who supported our children’s outreach programs. We are grateful to Trott & Trott, P.C. who once again generously supported our 21st Century Leaders; the DeRoy Testamentary Foundation for their continued funding of the Student Art Town exhibit and workshops and the OUR TOWN Art Show & Sale; Bank of Birmingham, Technology Equity Associates, Northwood University, The Staehle Family, eTitle, Greenleaf Trust, PNC Bank, Stanislaw Consulting, TAMMA

Capital, Plante Moran, Mills Pharmacy + Apothecary, Child Safe of Michigan, and the Outdoor Alliance Foundation whose sponsorships helped our iCount™ childhood obesity prevention reach twice as many children than last year.

Thanks to the Philip and Elizabeth Filmer Memorial Charitable Trust, 56 unemployed or underemployed people in Oakland County received scholarships for business skills; and to Nissan Foundation’s support of our Race Relations & Diversity Task Force. We are so appreciative to Raymond James for their generosity supporting the OUR TOWN Art Show & Sale. Our Dance Academy soared with a grant

from the Michael F. McManus Foundation. Heartfelt thanks go to the Senior Men’s Club for their amazing fund raising on our behalf.

Our challenge continues to get the community at large to realize we get no tax support, and are very dependent on individual, corporate and foundation donations. Our Social Enterprise efforts cover only 70% of our operating costs, which means we need to raise the remaining 30% (a big number) through the generosity of donors to keep our doors open.

We are grateful to everyone who helped us enrich others, and hope for your continued support to ensure TCH can continue our good work forever. We look forward to the future with all of you by our side. Please keep caring and giving.

2013 Was a Growth Year2013 was an excellent growth year for The Community House (TCH). The team over delivered on all business metrics to further stabilize the nonprofit. Most importantly, operating cash flow increased 354%. The positive results spanned across all areas: the Annual Fund Drive increased 14%, with the new donor base increasing 11%. The Senior Men’s Club, realizing the irreplaceable value of TCH, rallied to increase individual members’ donations by 68%. Banquet and Catering rebounded with increased sales of 60%. Class enrollments increased 8%; hours dedicated to outreach programs increased 47%, while the efficiency of funds used from donations increased by 7%. All this helped TCH to provide classes, venue space and outreach programs free to more nonprofits/sponsored groups and people who couldn’t afford to pay for them.

The TCH team worked diligently to raise awareness of the nonprofit’s community education/human services mission which contributed significantly to building and sustaining this vibrant community. Their new “Making a Difference at TCH” TV show highlighted TCH’s unique educational programs and events, while also shining the spotlight on TCH sponsors, donors, teachers and volunteers who helped TCH accomplish its mission.

5TCH celebrated its 90th birthday, by offering the largest selection of classes, programs, youth theatre and camps in the entire metro area. They supported Michigan sustainability by showcasing Michigan artists and musicians; and successfully launched an outdoor “Farm to Table Strolling Block Party” with local chefs’ tastings and food vendors using only Michigan ingredients; as well as Michigan farmers, breweries, wineries and spirits – sure to be a “must attend” annual event. Thousands of people from surrounding zip codes came into the Birmingham area to enjoy these events, while raising money for TCH outreach programs, and patronizing the downtown establishments. TCH expanded programs that increased business professionals’ skills and networking opportunities; and delivered their second “90 & Beyond” luncheon celebrating nonagenarians and centurions.

Thanks to generous community support and a superb team effort, TCH gained increased stability, and hopes of another 90 years of community service.

TeachOver 15,000 adults, business professionals and

youth took advantage of our community education classes, lectures and programs.

• In 2013, TCH Program Department offered 1,051 classes and programs—everything from cooking and yoga to business lectures and seminars. This accounted for 15,100 class registrations. One hundred ninety-three programs were offered for children. There were 24 complimentary or minimal cost programs.

• For a second year in a row, the Bulletproof Your Success™ Series brought in over 600 business people who improved their personal business effectiveness through learning and networking. In October, TCH organized the second annual Business Educational Symposium, themed “Maximizing Your Success Potential.” Northwood University was the presenting sponsor, and PNC Bank was the breakfast and lunch sponsor. One hundred ninety-three people attended this half day event which provided participants with an opportunity to attend three moderated seminars with four expert panelists giving key tips and tools on how to “maximize their success potential.”

• The Community House’s 21st Century Leaders program stayed committed to its outreach mission providing real-world experiences for youth across communities’ boundaries – uniquely preparing alumnus for life. Fall workshops included self-discovery in leadership styles, public speaking, business etiquette and “7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens.” The winter sessions were dedicated to the “Apprentice Series” – an entrepreneurial experience in product innovation, business plan development and investment board presentation. PNC Bank hosted the loan board to seven “companies,” awarding two million dollars in faux-checks. In April 2013, the 21st Century Leaders graduated a diverse class of 33 seventh graders, representing 23 public and private schools throughout the Woodward Corridor Communities of Detroit, Ferndale, Royal Oak, Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills. Trott & Trott P.C. underwrote the programming for the entire annual program.

• 2013 marked the 23rd year of “Student Art Town” art exhibition, as well as a series of free children’s art workshops - both generously sponsored by The DeRoy Testamentary Foundation. Art teachers from 30 metro Detroit public and private schools selected the artwork of over 307 student

artists for a weeklong exhibition at TCH. 300 students also participated in the free art workshops: Build a Bag; Mask Making; Imagination Box; and From Trash to Fash.

• Over 500 students strong, TCH Dance Academy celebrated its 49th year. The Academy’s vision is to be a source of inspiration and guidance for those who wish to make dance a part of their lives. In 2013, TCH Dance Academy offered training and certification of three faculty members in “Leap N Learn,” a nationally renowned children’s dance syllabus designed to introduce children to the basics of dance movement while engaging and encouraging their imagination. In December, TCH Ballet Ensemble and friends performed the Nutcracker Story Ballet to sold out audiences. The performance included 68 dancers and 40 volunteers. The Academy also hosted two “Winter Artist Encounters,” featuring two professional dancers who taught master classes and spoke with students about their careers as professional artists. The Academy was grateful to be supported by a donation from the Michael F. McManus Foundation.

• Sara Smith Youth Theatre presented two theatrical performances in 2013—“Seussical, Jr.” and “Willy Wonka, Jr.” The productions gave youth ages 8-18 an opportunity to learn and perform. 1,927 members of the community attended the performances offering exposure to community theatre. Eighty-five children were cast in the plays, and an additional 100 youth attended TCH summer theatre camps.

• The StoryTellers Guild aimed to improve children’s literacy in underserved areas through the art of storytelling. Members traveled to Oak Park, Pontiac, Warren, Hazel Park, Madison Heights, Ferndale, Utica, Dearborn, Royal Oak and Beaumont Hospital. Storytellers shared the joy of reading with approximately 2,326 children per month in grades K-6. The Guild collected gently used children’s books, and placed them in bins at area laundromats.

Connect Thousands of people attended TCH community and business networking events, and used our facilities

to enjoy art, music, and fellowship.

• In February of 2013, TCH launched the TV show “Making a Difference at TCH,” on Bloomfield Community Cable. The show highlighted programs and events while shining the spotlight on TCH sponsors, donors, teachers and volunteers. 27 programs aired from February to November, each with a different theme. “Making a Difference at TCH” provided a visual outlet to stream TCH’s mission to the greater community.

• Over 750 people attended the inaugural “Farm to Table Strolling Block Party” to support Michigan sustainability with tastings from chefs representing area restaurants from Oakland and Wayne counties, using only Michigan grown ingredients. Michigan vendors sold Michigan farm fresh produce and other edible products. Local breweries, wineries and distilleries also conducted tastings.

• TCH celebrated its 90th birthday by honoring nonagenarians plus with a “90 & Beyond” celebratory luncheon. 202 people attended -- 97 nonagenarians and five centurions. Attendees enjoyed a “Cars and Stars through the Decades” presentation. Guests over 90 years of age came at no charge.

• In November, 135 Corporate Partners and Sponsors attended the TCH Thank You Reception. Each attendee was individually recognized by TCH’s CEO for their support.

• TCH fundraiser OUR TOWN Art Show & Sale not only supported the work of Michigan artists, it engaged and expanded cultural awareness for members of our community.

• TCH Travel Department arranged first class accommodations for 403 travelers to destinations such as Alaska, Cuba and Tuscany. 15 day trips connected 205 travelers to local museums and theatrical performances.

• Members of the community who are concerned with achieving racial equality and ethnic diversity came to TCH for monthly programs offered by Race Relations & Diversity Task Force. The annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration featured keynote speaker Silas Norman, Jr., M.D. The Diversity Champion Honor Roll Breakfast recognized those who actively support diversity and the ideals of inclusion. Both events raised funds for the Task Force.

Help TCH helped the underserved learn and become more vital, as well as nourished life and recognized

important community contributions.

• In its second year, TCH administrated a summer childhood obesity prevention program to benefit at risk youth in Detroit and Pontiac. 342 youth and 25 adults from Goodwill Industries of Detroit participated in iCount™ by WalkStyles™ to improve their lifestyle and lead more vibrant lives. TCH partnered with the following human services nonprofit organizations: Matrix Human Services, Detroit Public School’s Gompers and Sampson/Webber, Highland Park Renaissance Academy Barber Campus, Development Centers, Inc., Don Bosco Hall, Martin Luther King, Jr. Educational Center Academy Middle School and Cranbrook School’s Horizons-Upward Bound. The program culminated with a “Vibrancy Day” celebration, featuring achievements and awards, as well as nutrition and movement breakout sessions.

• Linda Orlans, CEO of eTitle, was honored at TCH’s 2nd

Annual Gala for her community philanthropy. Mike Duggan was the evening’s keynote speaker. The Gala was the major fund raising event of the year for TCH outreach youth programs. The event also recognized individuals as TCH “Pillars of Vibrancy.” These individuals made contributions to the community in the three key TCH mission areas of Education, Culture and Wellness. The Education Pillar included Dr. Carole Deyer, Pamela Good and Henry Lee. The Culture Pillar recognized Maggie Allesee, Jeanne Hackett and Connie McEwan. In the Wellness Pillar were Pierre Boutros, Ed Mamou, and Dr. Svetlana Mishulin, M.D.

• TCH Early Childhood Center (ECC) provided an outstanding facility for 44 children including, infants, toddlers and preschoolers. TCH ECC was the only daycare in Oakland County to have a 5 star rating from Michigan’s “Great Start to Quality,” rating system for child care and preschool.

• In 2013, TCH outreach included subsidizing eight Sponsored Groups and four nonprofit service organizations by offering them free space and administrative support. TCH Sponsored Groups included: Young Professionals Network; Birmingham Bloomfield Newcomers; International Community Club; Race Relations & Diversity Task Force; Senior Men’s and Senior Women’s Clubs; the StoryTellers Guild, and Open Bridge. The nonprofit organizations supported were: Rotary Club; Optimists Club; Kiwanis and Lions Club.

As a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit, TCH gained greater financial stability in 2013. All business metrics were significantly improved. Increased revenue was created from new programs and events, as well as from continuing to enhance traditional offerings. Fine tuning of operational and business processes resulted in greater productivity and efficiencies. Importantly, we cannot over stress the incredible financial and emotional support we received from our Board of Directors. Communicating how important a community educational resource we are to this community helped make 2013 a successful growth year. We take seriously the responsibility we have to all of you to be the best stewards of your gifts, hoping you continue to help us carry on our good work. Your donations are vital to our on-going success. Thank you for supporting and believing in what we do.

Since Ruth Shain co-founded The Community House in 1923, TCH has been dedicated to sustaining and celebrating all that is Michigan. In 2013, that translated to supporting Michigan

farmers and artists; and offering youth outreach programs in leadership, art and childhood obesity prevention.TCH also provided a stunning venue for recognizing philanthropic community members, and celebrating wedding nuptials.
