Dear Friends:We are extremely grateful for your donations and ambassadorships supporting the community education programs and events that The Community House (TCH) worked hard to deliver in 2014. We had 1,278 individual, foundation and corporate donors, who along with the response from the public at large, helped thousands to benefit from our offerings, and allowed 4,200 children and adults in need to benefit from our free outreach programs - programs such as iCount™ Childhood Obesity Prevention, 21st Century Leadership/Entrepreneurship, Student Art Town Workshops, Feed Your Family’s Future™ Job/Workforce Preparedness, and StoryTellers Guild™ Reading. For the first time we delivered Thanksgiving food baskets for 150 families in need to our partner nonprofit agencies, Matrix Human Services and Kadima.

Our staff, volunteers and Board of Directors thank you for helping to make 2014 another growth year, solidly establishing our stability. We increased our net Operating Cash Flow to $465,000 by delivering significant top line revenue growth in classes, programs, community events, banquet services, and development efforts. And every department contributed in gaining operational efficiencies.

Your support helped us deliver on our nonprofit mission to impact lives through exceptional educational, social and outreach experiences. A lead donation from the DeRoy Testamentary Foundation, along with community donors, enabled TCH to replace the first roof of three in our roof system. Excellent classes and teachers delivered an all-time high of 15,439 registrations. TCH’s elegant décor, combined with our expert in house chefs and event planners selling expanded social and corporate menu packages, resulted in our banquet area crossing the $1,000,000 revenue mark – the first time since 2009. Our Early Childhood Center was at 100% capacity, reflecting it being the only private daycare center in Birmingham to receive the 5 Star Rating by Michigan’s Great Start to Quality System. Programs for business professionals raised $107,000 for our children and families in need outreach efforts. And our Youth Theater and Camps were as popular as ever.

Our challenge continues to get the community to realize we are a nonprofit serving the tri-county area, getting no millage or government funding, thus being extremely

dependent on individual, corporate and foundation donations. Our “for fee” offerings only cover 70% of our operating costs, which means we need to raise the additional 30% through donations to keep our doors open, as we have limited reserves. We very much need your help, as our ambassadors, to continue spreading the word.

Sincere thanks go to our Corporate Partners whose leadership roles supported our children and family in need outreach efforts: DeRoy Testamentary Foundation and

Raymond James for their continued funding of the Student Art Town exhibit, art workshops, and the OUR TOWN Art Show & Sale; Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Bank of Birmingham, the Orlans Group, Technology Equity Associates, and the Staehle Family whose leadership donations enabled our iCount childhood obesity prevention summer program to reach hundreds of at-risk teens; Hall & Hunter REALTORS, presenting sponsor of House Tour; Trott Foundation and Attorney’s Title as primary supporters of 21st Century Leaders/Entrepreneurship program; Huntington Bank as presenting

sponsor of Farm to Table and ParkArt; DMC’s Children’s Hospital of Michigan and Giarmarco, Mullins and Horton, P.C. and Whole Foods for leading the way to give out free Thanksgiving food baskets; PNC Foundation for their leadership funding of Feed Your Family’s Future; Magnolia by the Lakes and Talmer Bank who led our efforts to serve the senior community; Nissan Foundation’s support of our Race Relations & Diversity Task Force; and Michael F. McManus Foundation’s support of our Dance Academy. Heartfelt thanks go to the Senior Men’s Club for their generous donations to the SMC’s Legacy Endowment and Annual Funds.

As we enter our 92nd year, we thank all of you who help TCH continue to have a significant, positive impact on the economic vitality of our surrounding neighborhoods. In 2015, we welcome our new President, William D. Seklar, who joins our effort towards sustainability. It is an honor for all of us to serve you.

Sincerely,

Camille Jayne, President & CEOCongressman David Trott, Board Chair

2014: Increased Growth & Profitability

2014 was the third, consecutive growth year for TCH. Thanks to generous community support and a superb team effort, TCH made great gains toward greater profitability and stability. All business metrics increased versus a year ago, further stabilizing the nonprofit. Importantly, net operating cash flow increased 53% over 2013, resulting in no need to borrow from TCH’s limited investment reserves. Banquets, Programming, Development, and Community Events delivered net incomes over budget at 78%, 18%, 17% and 3%, respectively. Facilities and Administration expenses came in a combined 44% below budget. Hours dedicated to outreach programs increased 4%. All this helped to provide free venue space and outreach programs to nonprofits, sponsored groups and people who couldn’t afford to pay for them.

TCH worked diligently to raise awareness of the nonprofit’s community education and outreach mission with new

programs and increased messaging. Their “Making a Difference at TCH” TV show continued to highlight TCH’s nonprofit status, programs, events and outreach efforts. TCH welcomed Corporate Partners, teachers, and volunteers who helped TCH accomplish its mission. Social media efforts expanded with over 5,000 followers on Twitter and 3,200 likes on Facebook; and 25,000 people opting in for their marketing emails.

TCH celebrated its 91st birthday by offering the largest selection of community classes, youth theatre and camps in the entire metro area. Thousands of people from surrounding zip codes came into Birmingham enjoying TCH events, and patronizing the downtown establishments. TCH supported Michigan sustainability by showcasing local artists, musicians and speakers. 2014 was the second successful year for the “Farm to Table Block Party Food Fest” featuring all Michigan grown food and beverages. TCH increased business professionals’ skills and networking with the inaugural professional women’s “Practice Your Pitch” luncheon, and the “Get & Give a Basket” fund raiser for Thanksgiving food baskets. TCH delivered a third, successful year of both their Business Educational Symposium and “90 & Beyond” nonagenarian celebration luncheon.

TCH thanks Congressman David Trott for his oversight and guidance, as well as Camille Jayne for her vision and business stewardship that steered TCH to financial stability, as she advances to Board Chair.

Over 15,000 adults, business professionals and youth took advantage of our community education classes, lectures and programs.

21ST CENTURY LEADERSIn May 2014, the 21st Century Leaders graduated a diverse class of 36 seventh graders, representing 20 public and private schools throughout the Woodward Corridor Communities of Detroit, Ferndale, Berkley, Royal Oak, Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills. Student leaders shared their unique experiences while engaging in problem-solving & self-awareness activities. Workshops included public speaking, etiquette, entrepreneurship, temperaments, 7 Habits, and money management.

CENTER FOR WEALTH EDUCATIONNew in 2014, the Center for Wealth Education (CWE) was designed to help educate the public in an information rich, non-selling environment on wealth management topics. The three part panel series ran from February through April, and addressed topics ranging from estate planning, to investment management, tax, banking, and life and long term care as well as property/casualty insurance matters. The series was free and open to the public. Over 300 people attended.

CLASSESEducational Programming at TCH was developed to meet the changing needs of the community. The Program Department offered 866 classes and programs accounting for 15,439 class registrations. Ninety-six programs were offered for children. There were 20 complimentary or minimal cost programs.

EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTERTCH Early Childhood Center (ECC) provided an outstanding facility for 44 children including, infants, toddlers and preschoolers. The program encourages the development of the total child and focuses on an active learning environment and problem solving skills through the use of the HighScope philosophy. The Center received a prestigious five star rating, the highest level obtainable, from “Great Start to Quality,” Michigan’s rating and improvement system for child care and preschool.

BUSINESS EDUCATIONAL SYMPOSIUMTCH organized the third annual Business Educational Symposium themed “How to Make More Money.” The Orlans Group was the presenting sponsor and PNC Bank was the breakfast sponsor. 180 people attended this half day conference, which provided participants with an opportunity to attend three moderated seminars featuring four expert panelists giving key tips and tools for how to be successful.

PARKARTOver 800 children and their families attended the inaugural ParkArt, an evening of the arts, in Birmingham’s Shain Park. ParkArt created an interactive, family oriented event that allowed youth to partake in hands-on art projects. The event also included performances by TCH Youth Summer Theatre actors and TCH Dance Academy. Art activities included: calligraphy, fiber art, henna, Zentangle, origami, recycled art projects, mural art, tie-dying, and painting.

TCH DANCE ACADEMYTCH Dance Academy reached an important milestone in 2014, celebrating their 50th season and becoming the oldest dance studio in Oakland County. The primary goal of the school is to instill in the students proper dance technique through positive and supportive teaching methods. In 2014, 480 class takers enrolled in dance. TCH Ballet Ensemble and friends orchestrated a very special Nutcracker Story Ballet to 600 attendees. The Academy was supported by a generous donation from the Michael F. McManus Foundation.

STUDENT ART TOWNThe 24th Annual Student Art Town exhibit featured 307 entries from 40 schools—the biggest exhibition in the history of the event. All three floors of TCH were filled with artwork that had been hand selected by art teachers of elementary, middle and high school students throughout Metro Detroit. TCH hosted two ceremonies to honor the students. All elementary students received a certificate and a backpack, courtesy of Huntington Bank. The middle and high school students’ artwork was juried and awarded prizes by Barbara Heller, Chief Conservator at Detroit Institute of Arts.

SARA SMITH YOUTH THEATRESara Smith Youth Theatre presented two musicals—The Little Mermaid, Jr. and Beauty and the Beast Jr. featuring combined casts of 97 children. The production gave youth ages 8-18 an opportunity to learn and perform. 1,835 members of the community attended the performances offering exposure to community theatre. An additional 135 children attended TCH summer theatre camps.

FARM TO TABLE BLOCK PARTY FOOD FESTThe 2nd annual “Farm to Table Block Party Food Fest” supported Michigan sustainability by providing sample tastings from chefs representing well-known area restaurants from Oakland and Wayne counties, using only Michigan grown ingredients. Vendors sold the best of Michigan farm fresh agricultural produce, cheese, meat, baked goods, jams and other edible products. Local breweries, wineries and distilleries were also on hand to conduct tastings.

“MAKING A DIFFERENCE AT TCH” TV SHOWTCH produced a weekly cable television show, “Making a Difference at TCH” which aired on Bloomfield Community Cable. The program highlighted programs and events while shining the spotlight on TCH sponsors, donors, teachers and volunteers who helped TCH accomplish its mission.

ConnectThousands of people attended TCH community and business networking events, and used our facilities to enjoy art, music, and fellowship.

90 & BEYONDIn June, TCH paid homage to nonagenarians with a “90 & Beyond” celebratory luncheon. 200 people attended, 92 nonagenarians and one centurion were recognized. Attendees and honorees enjoyed a “Foods, Fads & Fashions Through the Decades” presentation. Thanks to support from the Bank of Birmingham, guests over 90 years of age attended at no charge. Other sponsors included: Aly Darin Photography; Christine Lynn, Cranbrook REALTORS; Heartland; Managed Asset Portfolios; Vasileff Medical Group; and La Petite Pastry Shoppe.

OUR TOWN ART SHOW & SALEFor 29 years, the juried, all media art show has provided a forum for Michigan artists to show and sell their work. The Opening Night “Art in Vogue” Party, included strolling hors d’oeuvres, a live fashion/art presentation and the first opportunity to preview and purchase art. The show was open to the public for three days, at no charge. 35% of the proceeds from the art sales were used to fund TCH wellness, leadership and art outreach programs for at risk youth in Pontiac and Detroit. The 2014 event showcased 355 pieces of artwork from 159 artists and awarded $10,000 in prize money. Barbara Heller and Robert Dempster served as the jurors. The Co-Chairs were Barbara Heller, Janice Degen and Elizabeth DuMouchelle. Benefactor Chairs were Laurie and Rob Farr. The OUR TOWN honoree was Jeanne Hackett.

RACE RELATIONS & DIVERSITY TASK FORCEThe goal of the Race Relations & Diversity Task Force is to promote and embrace an appreciation for diversity and advocate for inclusivity, equality, and justice in the region. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, which featured keynote speaker award-winning broadcaster Darryl Wood, raised funds to continue educational efforts, and the sold out Diversity Champion Honor Roll Breakfast recognized those who actively support ethnic diversity and the ideals of inclusion in the workplace.

WOMEN’S POWER PARTNERS CLUBThe Women’s Power Partners Club kicked off their inaugural year with “Practice Your Pitch” co-sponsored by Shain Park REALTORS and PNC Bank. 190 professionals enjoyed a luncheon while hearing from a panel of experts helping women to “be their best.” Panelists included an executive recruiter, a career coach, an organizational team analyst, a stylist, a skin beauty expert and an investment specialist. The attendees were also given a chance to network and “practice their pitch.” In November, the club supported “Get & Give a Basket Women’s Holiday Mixer.” Attended by 130 women, it gave attendees the opportunity to mix, mingle and network all while supporting an important cause. 116 gift baskets, valued at a minimum of $75 each, had been donated to TCH by local individuals and retailers. Those who attended could buy one of the baskets for just $50. For each basket that TCH sold, the money was used to make up Thanksgiving food baskets for 150 mothers in need.

TCH distributed 120 family literacy/engagement packages focusing on the following areas of impact: Family Financial Budgeting, Job Preparedness, Exercise & Nutrition for Families, and Coping with Stress. Families who participated received an educational binder and a $75 credit on their DTE Energy bill.

TCH helped the underserved learn and become more vital, as well as nourished life and recognized important community contributions.

As a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit, TCH gained solid financial stability in 2014, significantly improving on all business metrics with help from new programs and events, as well as continuing to improve traditional offerings. Fine tuning of operational and business processes resulted in greater productivity and efficiencies. Importantly, we cannot over stress the incredible financial and emotional support we received from our Board of Directors.

As a critical community educational resource and asset, we take seriously our responsibility to be the best stewards of your gifts, hoping you will continue to help us carry on our good work. Your donations are vital to our on-going stability and future sustainability. Thank you for supporting and believing in what we do.

The Community House was very fortunate to receive a generous legacy donation from longtime Senior Men’s Club member, George A. Miller, to rename TCH’s outdoor tribute terrace “The Miller Tribute Terrace.” George, along with his children, also wanted to honor his late wife/their mother, Barbara, by leaving a lasting legacy for the Miller name to will live on in perpetuity at TCH. Leading by example, we are extremely grateful to George who wanted others to know how rewarding it can be to donate to TCH during their lifetime so they can enjoy the benefits of their kindness and generosity.

Thanks to all the support TCH had from so many individual donors, businesses, foundations and volunteers, in 2014 we were able to say “yes” to providing free Outreach Impact Programs that touched over 4,200 children in need, at-risk youth and low income parents of pre-school children. We did this through our iCountTM Childhood Obesity Prevention program, StoryTellers Guild Literacy program, Feed Your Family’s FutureTM financial literacy and job preparedness program, 21st Century Leadership & Entrepreneurship, and Student Art Town free art workshops.
