Sept. 23, 2011 Principal’s Note I hope everyone has had a great week! We had a couple of volleyball victories this week along with a tie for our softball team. Our golf team pulled off a victory against Carmel, but unfortunately the Cougars got the best of our football team. We have several opportunities to support the Cavalier teams this coming week with home games on Monday and Wednesday for volleyball and softball and our first home football game on Thursday versus JM Robinson. The golf team also will be in action against Randolph. Games begin at 5pm and students are to go home as usual and return for the games. Good luck to all of our athletes! I hate to “beat a dead horse,” but I have received three more community complaints from neighbors in Highgrove and Weston Glen. Car pool parents, you are asked again to not use the neighborhoods as a means to avoid the car pool procedures. Please do not park along the streets in these neighborhoods or block the entrance to the neighborhoods in order to get your child more quickly. The HOAs of both neighborhoods have pointed out the safety concerns and are particularly worried that if a resident of the neighborhood needed emergency vehicles, there would be a significant delay. I have encouraged both HOAs to contact CMPD if problems continue. Thank you in advance for your assistance. If your children are in Ms. Hill or Mr. Blayney’s classes, please make sure you received the letters that were sent home this week updating some staffing issues. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. ODYSSEY OF THE MIND
Odyssey of the Mind is a problem solving competition where teams of 5-7 students work together on a creative solution to a problem. This outstanding program builds 21st century skills that our students will need as future leaders in our community! Community House had three teams last year, with one succeeding up to the World Competition! Look at the problems at www.odysseyofthemind.com and come to an informational night on Thursday September 29th at 6:30pm in the Middle School Cafeteria. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend to learn about the program and understand the commitment involved.

Our inspiration for this fundraiser, Isabella Santos, is a 6-year-old Ballantyne area Kindergartner
that was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma in October of 2007. She has undergone 4 years of treatment, traveling between Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan and Levine Children’s Hospital here in Charlotte. Just 3 weeks ago, she relapsed for the fourth time. She is currently receiving radiation treatments after school each day and will be starting a new clinical trial chemotherapy later this month in the hopes of preventing her disease from growing. Due to
her multiple relapses, there are few treatment options available to her. The new clinical trial hopes to keep her stable until a cure is developed. The lack of research funding for this rare
cancer prevents new treatments from being developed, so Isabella must wait and hope. Please come out and join us for a fun filled family day and support Isabella and her family. If you
can’t attend, but still want to participate. Feel free to donate by going to www.isabellasantosfoundation.com and clicking “Donate”.
The funds raised through this event will benefit Neuroblastoma Research, as well as the local Make-a-Wish Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House. (All these charities directly impact
Isabella and her family.)
Isabella's will be cheering her Brother Grant on the sidelines this fall with the U6 CSA program so please look for her this season!
