WILL K+12 MAKE US SMARTER?

It is English which my Grade 1 teacher used as a lan-guage of instruction back then, but this year, Grade 1 pupils will be taught in their mother tongues, and high school fresh-men will be provided withtech-nical courses. Apart from this, they will also all take two more years to complete secondary

school, the first batch under the K-to-12 basic education pro-gram launched just this year. The K-to-12 model primarily overhauls the cur-rent 10-year basic education cycle by adding two years of senior high school, to align our school system with the global 12-year standard. Prior to K-to-12, the Philippines was the only country in Asia that still had a 10-year basic education cycle. Another goal of the Enhanced K+12 Curriculum is to produce

graduates who are better equipped with life skills and could be legally employed. The Senior High School component of the curriculum will provide the students with specialized train-ings in science and technology, music and arts, and business and entrepreneurship. The Department of Education has underscored the need to address the country’s poor quality of basic education, as reflected in the low scores in National Achievement Test.

However, a certain study in 2012 in the University of the Philippines asserts that there is no correlation between the length of the school cycle and the quality of education. With an additional two years of high school, the DepEd estimates billions of pesos will be needed to provide better facilities and to hire competent teachers. Also, DepEd believes that it wil. In other words, high school education will no longer be viewed as preparatory stage

for tertiary education because those who have graduated from Senior High School would have a choice to either proceed to higher studies or to go to work. Whether this reform will prosper or not still lies on how well the plan is laid out and how sincere the govern-ment is in implementing it. In other words, it will take more than a decade to make the Filipino smarter.

RIZAL’S SACRIFICES: WORTHY OR NOT?

In Jose Rizal’s novel, Noli Me Tangere, the main character, Crisostomo Ibarra, stated his last few words to Sisa’s youngest son, Basilio- “Mamamatay akong hindi nasisilayan ang bukangliway-way sa aking bayan. Kapag makakakita niyon, salubungin ninyo. Huwag ninyong kalimu-tan ang mga nabuwal sa dilim ng gabi.” Do these melancholic yet meaningful words move every Filipino’s heart? Have we attained the so called Bukan-gliwayway which stands for independence, the independ-ence that will eradicate total darkness and that will make our country shines brighter? Are these words enough to inspire the youth? Will these words motivate the nation’s politicians? Or do these words just be words? If Jose Rizal were still living, what would he feel after witnessing that our country is leading to its own destruction as shown in the video presentation, Kaninong Anino? Who could that “anino” be? Is there a tendency that he would be writing another novel revealing his thoughts, his reac-tions, and his actions towards slavery, ignorance, violence, abuses, and freedom in order to save our country again? Would the pen be still mightier than the sword? Or would he lead another People Power Revolu-tion? Our national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, spent his short, tragic yet fruitful life in doing favors for others. He coura-geously fought for our country’s freedom. He chose to sacrifice his life for the sake of our be-loved country. He died antici-pating that our nation would achieve its total independence from the hands of the abused conquerors, politicians,

and friars. He rested in peace hop-ing that our nation would be-come progressive and its people would become successful. But the question is, are we really free from colonizers, slavery, and abuses? In contemporary time, there are no changes from what the common Tao is expe-riencing now compared to the Indiyo during Rizal’s time. First, most of the Fili-pinos are experiencing poverty even below poverty line. It is very evident that the rich-est, most influential and most powerful people in this nation are the politicians, clergymen, and foreigners just like the Spaniards who colonized our country for 333 years. They can make and break an Indiyo or Tao anytime, anywhere they want to. Second, despite the eagerness of the Filipinos to be-come educated, some of them remain illiterate and ignorant. Only those who have the means can study similar to the chosen few during Rizal’s era. Even though there is free educa-tion for all, still some Filipinos choose to work than to study. To them, the one-peso, where Rizal can be found, is more important than education.

Third, some are being maltreated by other nationali-ties. Several Filipinos become slave not only in our country but also in other countries for being a laborer or an employee of a foreign business or com-pany. Some are even victims of human trafficking, drug mule, cruelty, and exploitation. Lastly, our nation is on the stage of fighting for its right, the Panatag Shoal, over China just like during Rizal’s period wherein our nation gained its independence with the aid of the Americans. If only Rizal were alive

today, would he regret on being a martyr? Would he blame the government, the church, his fel-lowmen, or himself? There could be a pos-sibility that Rizal would regret sacrificing his own happiness and disobeying his parents, brothers, and sisters pieces of advice. If it is really true that Josephine Bracken had a child with Rizal but was forced to leave Rizal because of Rizal’s dangerous situation. Imagine Rizal’s life ended without seeing his child grow and have his own family. He died not knowing Bracken was bearing his pre-cious child. If the rumors are true that the child died because of having a frail body prob-ably due to Josephine Bracken’s being too emotional, think-ing about the sufferings Rizal had to endure just to make his country free while the baby was still in her womb. Even the in-nocent child had to die for the sake of our country. If the Filipinos would see Rizal still living in this modern world, could we face him confidently, knowing that our situation did not change totally? If Rizal would be given a chance to go back in the past and change it, would he still accept the responsibility to lead the Filipinos in fighting for their freedom? Would he allow the situation at present become worse? Or do these things would not happen? If so, who or what particular character would he consider the obstacle on achieving the bukangliway-way? Rizal daringly exposed that the church and the state were the main reason Filipi-nos experiencing a difficult and miserable life, which led on naming Rizal Erehe and Pilibustero. If Rizal were still alive, maybe he would still focus on writing novels and articles about the injustices of the church and the Philippine

government and the sufferings of Filipinos.

In the first place, he would particularly tackle on the rampant graft and corrup-tion of the people who are in authority. Even during Rizal’s time, bribery is the name of the game. Politicians and friars were involved in making Rizal’s father suffer a lot. They used their authority and wealth in ruining not only the life of Rizal and his family but also every Filipino’s life. They could manipulate and even fabricate things by just giving some-thing to the persons involved. Taxes were religiously collected without giving considerations. At present, the authorities are likewise demanding and pow-erful. Rules/laws are sometimes disregarded for the good of the chosen ones.

In the second place, the church actively participates on the decision of the congress and the senate such as the contro-versial Reproductive Health Bill. Until now the church has still the authority to take part on the government’s ruling on certain political issues. Still both eras are somehow experi-encing the same situation.

Rizal sacrificed his life just to fight for our rights, the right to decide from our own verdict and not from the view-points or manipulation of oth-ers. We have our own minds. Our politicians have their own stand. We should not let others control us. If we continue to do this then the death of Rizal will lose its essence. Those monumental edifices are not only build for display purposes but most importantly to remind every Filipino the sacrifices, commitment, dedication and the eagerness of our national hero to gain our freedom from oppression.

Lastly, the authority’s in-volvement in criminal and civil charges creates chaos and con-fusion among Filipinos. One of the important characters in his novel, Noli Me Tangere, Padre Damaso though a priest had a daughter named Maria Clara to Pia Alba. We all know that priests are not allowed to have intimate relationships. Even before and until now, priests and politicians are somehow controversially involved in im-morality and in some related issues.

Filipinos should not be under one’s shadow. We should not be afraid of fighting for what is right. We should not tolerate one’s unconventional action or behavior. We must always remember that our national hero did everything in attaining our independ-ence. Amidst adversities, we should continue to live accord-ing to the will of our Almighty God. And if Jose Rizal were alive, I would definitely thank him for sacrificing his life and even told him that we should not be under anyone’s shadow, for I firmly believe that the Anino that is being referred to in the amazing video clip is our own Anino.

Our shadow will protect us from wrongdoings and will remind us to be obedient for it is there anywhere we go. An individual cannot live without a shadow; therefore, every Fili-pino must be very cooperative, determined, and God-fearing in order to achieve real inde-pendence.

In that manner, we can really see the light- the bukan-gliwayway that we are longing for. And this light will remind us not to forget the significance of having a national hero, DR. JOSE PROTACIO RIZAL.

Jam Christian A. Torres I do believe that Grade 7 students will benefit from K+12. They will become good in academics aswell as in different skills in language and enterpreneur-ship.

Michelle V. Borlaza

K+12 Curriculum is of good quality in the sense that it will provide knowledge for students in prepara-tion for their future.

Teachers have to be flexible. Having taught the K-12 in Grade 7 students, there is one thing that I real-ized. The objective behind this program is for the ben-efit of the learners but whatever kind of curriculum the government offers to them, the result will still be the same. I have nothing against K-12 for it will set our ed-ucation standards according to the needs of our society and of our students.

It greatly affects the government, teachers, parents and most especially the students in terms of years of stay in school.

My opinion as a teacher, many of us disagree, most especially the parents. They think that it was a big burden for them. But then, this signals change to improve our sys-tem of education.

What is your opinion on the K+12 Curriculum?

The benefactors of this K+12 Curriculum are the Grade 7 students. Finding a job will be easy because of the updated and new technical and vocational courses that have been offered in this curriculum. This outcomes-based curriculum will give us the chance to compete from other countries since this will be the same from the progressive countries. Indeed, this is really a great opportunity not only to the learn-ers but also to their parents as well.

Marites A. Torres

Leah D. Oducayen

K+12 curriculum can greatly help the students to be-come more knowledgeable in different areas of learning. They can follow in the modern trend of education.

Cathy Joy V. Betonio

K+12 is all about the unique strategy of DepEd to teach the students. It is a good idea for us to help our-selves and become successful someday. Let us cooper-ate. We will acquire quality education through the use of K+12 curriculum. The Grade 7 students are enjoying their lessons because the teachers are using new and up-dated teaching techniques.

For me, K+12 still depends upon the performance of the students because this will just reflect to them if they will really have the dedication to burn the midnight oil. However, this can greatly help the Filipino youth to acquire a more holistic education thus, it helps us to be aware and knowledgeable to certain things around us.

You taught and shared to us many things,

You made me confident and wise,

You gave me not only hope and wings ,

To reach my dreams and touch the skies.

You made us wiser and stronger,

And expect that to happen during the break time

Watch out for your drools, my ever dear friends of mine.

Even if you’re getting pissed, you’ll be laughing.

Going Green In The Philippine Scene: A Trendy Attempt or A Timeless Effort? What comes in your mind when you hear the word “green”? Some thinks it signi-fies relaxation, peace, serenity and uh, not quite good stuffs. Anyway, let’s not talk about those “not quite good stuffs”, they’re not really suitable to our ages. Well anyone has his/her opinion and point of view about anything and everything around us. And as I look at it, I see green as nature. Obviously, green is the color of leaves, which is always present when it is nature that is being talked about. In case you’re wonder-ing why the color of leaves is the one used to represent our environment,-I know. there are tons of other colors found in nature and not only green-well, green as we all know was the most dominant color in our environment. But that’s not the main reason why it is used to

represent nature. The main rea-son was that trees gives us air and trees got leaves. But, why not use the color of the bark of the tree instead? Easy! The leaves themselves were the ones to give us air. It’s like this; we humans inhale oxygen and exhale car-bon dioxide. Plants then, inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen. It’s like a cycle. It goes on and on as long as there are enough plants and humans to balance the system. Therefore, plants give us sufficient oxygen. O course, we cannot inhale carbon dioxide. They’re toxic to our bodies. That’s why we expel them. Nowadays, we have more advanced technology that makes our lives easier and more comfortable. It also helps in our progress rate. Good job Homo sapiens! This only proves that we had the smarts. We can now

use our minds properly and pass through a complicated sit-uation with grace and less time consumed. Oh my gosh! Homo sapiens, you really did evolve after all! But this advancement in technology doesn’t always bring about positive outcomes. What about our environment? Areas where trees used to live are now developed areas for more “productive struc-tures” or buildings in sim-pler terms or converted into commercial spaces. Some are occupied by housing projects. What about the trees? What happened to them? They are chopped down and used to make furniture. That’s fine. That is, if the chopped trees are replaced with new ones. But the problem with us people is that we’re always too busy to care. It’s too busy to replace them. They’re waste of time, money and effort, as others will say.

Sometimes I want to ask those who cut down trees legally or illegally, those who are in the government who are too busy to care, “Aren’t you too busy to breathe?” Let’s face it. Our eco-system, not only here in the Philippines but also all around the world is slowly dying with-out us, doing anything about it. But despite those, some people still makes effort to encourage others to go green. They make use of different methods to convince others. For example, some stores uses cloth bags as their product container instead of plastic bags that takes thou-sands of years to decompose. Some promotes recycling by means of selling products out of the garbage. Others join campaigns on tree planting. There are a thousand ways in going green and help saving our planet. All you have

to do is look around. There are also ways in going green that are still in style or with a twist. There are accessories that are recycled but are still nice. All you have to do is look around. Going green is great and fabulous. There are stars, Hollywood stars out there that are in favor of it. Doesn’t it felt much better when you’re able to help your country, rather, the earth survive? Of course it does! It can give you a peace of mind and a heck of a good night’s sleep! Who wouldn’t want those? Going green is a trendy and stylish attempt. As for me, people who think it is a time-less effort are idiots. Perhaps someday I’ll ask them,-when I finally found my guts!-“Aren’t you too busy to breathe?” (Kimberly Mae Tuazon)

TEACHER’S REFLECTION N O T H I N G B U T A M E R E R E F L E C T I O N

Oh yes, I am happy as a TEACHER, as an EM-PLOYEE, and as a PERSON.RANDOM.What can you say on my writ-ing style?I’m sleepy. I appreciate constructive CRITICISMS (Mr. Xavier Velasco)

Month before this school

year for me was very hec-tic, with me teaching sum-mer class students followed by week long seminars just before classes start. It got even dreadful when I misplaced the forms of my summer students, which made me very anxious. And as the school year gets started, the continuous work and aggravation also started. That is with the huge number of students, with their different personalities and behaviors, and meeting the deadlines of paper works. In addition to

this are daily issues and con-cerns with the students. But I don’t take all of this negatively. I believe these are the chal-lenges of being a teacher. In the first quarter, I realized, though it’s very sad, that what I’ve done was not enough for my students. Because of what I did of them would get a failing grade from my subject, and none of my some advisory students would cut their class anymore in any subject. Every day the greatest chal-lenge for me is how to educate not only those who interested

are not gifted enough to un-derstand.I feel glad and grateful when students study hard and to know that I was not just able to teach them my lesson but also, helped them to set their goals for the future, guiding them and making changes to their lives. As I reflect, I thought that I should be more dedicated with my profession not double but triple times. (Ms. MichelleV. Borlaza)

Teaching, they said is a noble profession. It certainly is! But I believe it is far beyond just being noble; it is in fact a ministerial job-with meager financial gain, a real teacher is willing to offer and share eve-rything in him/her more than of what is expected of him/her. Engineers build bridges, skyscrapers, but will soon decay! The Scientists boast of sending machines to the outer space-machines

that are intended to self de-struct! Bankers , (economics) businessmen may claim that they are responsible to the growth of a nation, yet too many people are deprived of basic necessities, any profes-sion could claim of “this” and “that” but only the “lowly” teachers (“lowly” because of being underpaid and ne-glected) are capable of mold-ing the great minds and soul of every individual. Teachers

wield so much power in his/her hand; that could turn an innocent child to either a beautiful creation of God or monster! Societies are formed not by engineers, scientists, bankers or businessmen but by teachers. God came to earth not in any other profession, but a teacher- He turned the whole world upside down! (Mr. Emmanuel Escoto)

I believe in this human prin-ciples-everyone should have the opportunities not just to survive, but to excel with their God-given talents and abilities. Those are the values that reflected in my life. I am not a perfect one but I could say that

I have done all of my best. Fur-thermore, I told my students to give all of their best to succeed. Even if they didn’t achieve the highest rank at least they have shown their talents. (Mrs. Leah Oducayen)

After those unfortunate events that I have experienced last quarter, questions had been racing in my mind. I keep on recalling all my past experi-ences since high school days up to college. Most of the said experiences are now uncom-mon to most students come to realize that it’s only a decade

had passed after my students days. I am very much aware that my time as a student’s is very different compared to them even the attitude towards studies. Why are we similar in many ways? Another thing was the ideas and principles that my college Alma matter instilled on my mind. Why are

they not applicable? Few things I can say for this quarter. Most beliefs and principles that I know are starting to fade. Promises can be made but they do not assure things will be okay.(Mr. Ian Eric M.Estopase)

MY FUTURE DEPENDS ON YOU

Jam Christian A.Torres

As what our national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, firmly believed- “Ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan” ignites my advocacy to stand and to interfere on what our country is heading on. But the question is how they can be the hope of the motherland. We know that different institutions such as home, school, church and state play a major role in mold-ing the total personality of a person. Through these insti-tutions, a better person can be developed and improved. Therefore, dedicated leaders and motivated followers can be produced. Ladies and gentle-men, our country is experi-encing political disturbance that hinders the progress of our country which makes our economy in an unstable condi-tion. This leads to confusion and disorder on the part of the

the various sectors in our so-ciety. Our fellowmen are into rallies stating their grievances and sentiments to our govern-ment. Filipinos clamor for change, radical change in our political system. Indeed, the main source of change lies in our hands. Our system of government is democracy which means that the power is in the hands of the people and not only on the chosen few. Every Filipino is given equal opportunities and equal rights. We are given freedom of expression and freedom of speech. If we want change, we should take advantage of this chance to choose our leaders. I do believe that the future of our nation lies on the hands of our intelligent voters, for our leaders are the ones responsible in making our homeland a better place to live in. Leaders of our nation have a great influence on our lives. They can even make and break each and every one of us. Our voice can be heard through the power of elec-tion which is the catalyst of change. We should be very vigilant in exercising our right to vote; otherwise, our hope of having change will remain hope forever. In choosing the right candidate, we must know his background- family back-ground, educational back-ground and political back-ground. Through this, we will be guided if he is qualified on a certain position. We should not only rely on popularity. Sometimes, press releases as

lives or will this candidate continue to ruin our lives? Your choice will af-fect our future. If you con-tinue to choose the wrong one, then history will repeat itself. THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK!

well as looks can be deceiving. We should check the candi-date’s platform. We should find out if this candidate is youth-oriented. He must be concerned with the welfare of us, the youth. There must be a clear view on the possible solutions on the problems that our country is encountering. Political will is a must in every candidate. and most of all, he must be a God-fearing person. Our beloved parents, teachers, guardians, please do us a favor in choosing the right leader. Think a hundred times before choosing your candidate. Take a look at your children, take a look at your country, and take a look at yourselves. Will this candidate be a channel of change? Will this candidate really help us in alleviating our

How is life miserable? Do you still sur-vive for a couple of years? Are you not getting hard on yourself ? Have you planned to become cozy? Therefore, convenience is on your way. Through this, you won’t find it difficult. Many minds have invented. They have improved our industry. Gradually we are ascending the awareness to development. That helps to im-prove our different life style. Technology helps to communicate easily, provides merry making for leisure time, and for comfort. In this simple way we are to nurture our thoughts and acts in high technology. It can be our way to find different jobs in and out of the country. In this generation, many people invented against up-setness such as in household chores. You do not need to become weary in cleaning every corner

of your house. Technology has provided it fast-er and easier. And the mere fact, you will find out to have been done so much more in just one day. Science did great in our industry. Because of our countrymen’s smart minds, we are able to learn creating different medicines. It helps to prolong our lives and makes it even better. Factories have many benefits from science and technology. We are exporting every products from country to country. The exchange is for the fund of our beloved Philippines. Try to imagine those things. Let us not put the bound-ary in ourselves from science and technologies. Explore those little things because these things will bring every Filipino to promotion.

WHAT SHOULD ITBE IN LIFE: LOVE OR DREAMS?

Lovers. Partners

and also friends encountered this problem. They didn’t know what to

do when our dreams obstruct the relationship between two people

who are so much on love. And they thought about what they should

choose: is it love with forever happiness or their dreams that can

be fulfilled and succeed someday. One day, my friend asked me, “If

you have given the right to choose what it should be; your love or your

dreams>?” When that question sinks in to my mind, I do not know what

the best answer should be. Because I had never experienced to be loved

and neither the opportunity in life did not come too. But then I thought

about the story of the caller in the radio station I used to hear. The

caller said that she had a big problem about what she would choose. Is it

the man of her life or her dreams? So

she listened to what the disc jockey advised to her. The DJ said, “Some

people says that dream comes once in a lifetime but love can wait. If that person truly loves you, he will sacri-fice himself for what is the best for both of you.” After a long period of

silence, I answered my friend that if I had been given the right to choose

between love and my dreams in life, I will choose the one that comes once in a lifetime and it is my dream. The

reason is that love is always there even if the person you love is not

here beside you. He feels complete as long as your love for each other

will remain forever and his dream in life will not be interrupted. And also

both of you will always be faithful, honest and sincere for what you feel

for the one you love.

Everything in this world is chang-ing. Even if you do not like it, it would possibly happen. Times are rolling by. There is new and there is an old one. Every existence is dying. How is life without significance? Whose life is it? It is yours. You are not just waking up every day for success in business, preparing for con-tests, trembling for requests, screaming to heartthrobs, searching for the perfect partner or simply life’s luxury. Try to think. After you obtain all you wanted, you have your money in banks, you have it saved for your beloved offsprings, everything is for them. And then what is next? You will die after tiring and abusing your soiled body. How is your life? You have to think eternally, not tempo-rarily. After death, where would you go? Life is a plant. One hundred percent true. At first, you can see it, smell it, and feel it. Gradually, they will be withered. How can you make every hour important? There is one thing: accept the eternal sureness. I would like you to acquaint someone. Hopefully, you will lovingly know it. I just wish after these hints, you will meet someone like Him. He will never get you hurt; instead he will make you stronger. He is not like others, who will leave you after they gained something from you. Rather, he will help you as much as he can. He will not turn you off in spite of big disillusion-ment but will give courage through His words. Even earth quakes, oceans will part, skies and galaxies will fall, and ferocious evil would come up in you. He is your refuge in front of world war. Who is He? Even someone would end your precious life, you will not regret it. Simply because you are safe at his side. Some kind of weird. But it is

simply true. Perhaps you are aware to Him but not totally aware of him yet He knew you. He knew you entirely. You know He is watching you over and over again. In His eyes, you are visible to him even if you are in every corner of this world. Every darkness would pave in your path. He is at your side. He will serve as your shining lamp in misery. He is closer to you, nearer on the paper you’re holding. In fact, He loved you. He loved you in a sense you still exist here on earth. His affection is in you ever since. If you are known with Him, you have certainty. He is exciting to know. Do you know Jesus? Since He has loved you, He even gave his own life to you. Every courage that blew to him is your sin that is gradually healed. Sin? What are those? Unmannered answers to parents, covet, bad words and acts, immorality and so much more. Your sin was paid on the cross through His blood. You are nearly to hell-everlasting death but Jesus lifted you up to eternal life. How can you prove that you deserve Him? How can you change his wonderful redemption? Simply confess your sins, your sinful way of life. Think of the way He died for you because of the love’s greatness. Do not be numb on your feeling. Cry if you want, show your repentance to Him. He is open to forgive how messy you are. Let him reign in your heart, forever. And everything you have read will perfectly be yours. Words in here are not ade-quate to His perfections but He is great. There is a group of people who also know him. Try to approach them and you will know Jesus better and better. I hope it is not too late for you. Do not refuse this opportunity before your time is over.

Through the joint project of College of Science and its students, University of the Philippines created an E-Jeepney (Eco Jeepney)last year.

The E-Jeepney works using heat from the sun or solar energy that is gener-ated through solar panels usually located at the at the top of the jeepney. E-Jeepney helps to lessen the use of diesel fuel.

Last year, UP Science Department once again made another alternative engine. They called it E-Train (Eco Train), it works by the help of the heat from the sun, through the solar panel that converts it as an electric energy.

According to the inventor of this project, if President Aquino approves this project, this engine will be used outside the UP campus so the rate of pollution will decrease.

The benefits this powerful invention has to offer are the decrease air pollu-tion rate and the conservation of some natural fossil fuel.

Filipinos look forward to creating another eco engines that will surely make not only our country but also the Mother Earth proud.

“Smart” floors that monitor your movements might not be practical for a while yet, but this one seems like a lot of fun. The GravitySpace floor monitors your weight, and beams a mirror image of yourself back. After that, the image can do some neat activities, like play soccer. It could even perform customized functions just for you, like turning on your fa-vorite TV show when you sit down on the couch, or monitor itself for unfamiliar footsteps, keeping you safe from intrud-ers.The glass floor is surrounded by infrared LEDs covered with pressure-sensitive film. Below the glass floor is a camera and projector. When someone steps down on the film, it stops the infrared beams. The camera notices that, and the projector can beam up an image (or move a soccer ball) in response.

Does Lightning Cause Headaches?

As of last year, there were something like 650 million active web sites on the Inter-net. That number is growing fast, but even if it weren’t--even if it stopped dead in its tracks right now--you could spend the next 50 years surfing the web at a pace of five sites per minute, 12 hours a day, 365 days per year, and you’d still only visit (briefly) 10% of the Internet Universe.Unlike the actual Universe, however, the Internet’s places do not exist in physical space--there’s no such thing as one website being “close” or “far” from another one; the two are either linked or they are not. While those links don’t correspond directly to any kind of distance or direction, they do suggest a relationship. If, for example, someone built a personal website, and linked to their website through their Facebook page, people would really only ar-rive at the website via the Facebook page. Most likely, that would mean that not too many people visited the website; the website would be a tiny little out-of-the-way place in the Universe of the Internet. (www.popsci.com)

Participants recruited based on the criteria for International Headache Society-defined migraines were instructed to record their headaches in a diary every day for three to six months. For chronic headache sufferers, the study found that the risk of headache increased 31 percent when lightning struck within 25 miles of participants’ homes, and the risk of migraine increased 28 percent. The way weather affects headaches isn’t precisely known. The study’s authors used mathematical models to account for other factors that could be contributing to an increase in the frequency of headaches. Yet even taking into account related effects like barometric pressure and humidity, their results showed a 19 percent increased risk for headaches on lightning days. Greater instances of negatively charged lightning currents also led to a higher chance of headache.Vincent Martin, one of the study’s lead authors, is a University of Cincinnati professor who studies migraines. He explains a few different ways that lightning might trigger headaches.“Electromagnetic waves emitted from lightning could trigger headaches,” he says. “In addition, lightning produces increases in air pollutants like ozone and can cause release of fungal spores that might lead to migraine.”However, they say further research is needed to determine the exact tie between a pounding head and meteorological factors. (www.popsi.com )The Most Amazing Photos Of

Flowers You’ve Ever SeenFlowers aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but the latest project from minimalist filmmaker and photographer Andrew Zuckerman could make even the biggest skeptic fall in love with blooms. His book of photography, Flower, renders some familiar species so crisply they’re almost unrecognizable as something you’d see in your neighbor’s garden. In Flower, Zuckerman says he aims “to translate the essential nature of his subjects and unearth qualities that have previously escaped scrutiny.”The hefty coffee table tome is the result of an investigation of over 300 species, providing an intimate, pared-down look at the botanical world. Filmmaker David Lynch sings his praises on the book’s back cover: “These photographs of flowers taken by An-drew Zuckerman are pure.” And everyone knows you can’t argue with a book blurb from David Lynch. Will This Fish transform into medicine? The animal facility on the bottom floor of a drab building at Duke University is un-comfortably warm and smells a bit like raw seafood. That’s not surprising given what’s down there. The space holds a few thousand plastic fish tanks, each home to dozens of zebrafish: one-inch-long, big-eyed vertebrates that are becoming go-to research subjects for many scientists. NicoKatsanis, a Duke geneticist who hunts down the causes of rare illnesses, is one of a growing number of researchers choosing to work with zebrafish instead of rodents. Since scientists learned to selectively mutate zebrafish the ability to turn the species into models of human diseases—the number of biomedical zebra-fish papers has skyrocketed, from 26 to 2,100 last year. The nonprofit Zebrafish International Resource Center, which sells 2,608 dif-ferent genetically modified strains to researchers, lists 921 academic labs and companies that use the fish. “The field is on fire,” says Leonard Zon of Harvard Medical School. Zon’s lab, for example, has used fish models to study skin cancer, blood diseases, and stem cells. Others have created fish with DNA mutations linked to narcolepsy, muscle disorders, and the large head size associated with autism.

To be sure, rodents still outnumber zebrafish in medical research labs. In 2010, biomedical research papers that used mice or rats were 10 times as common as those that used any other lab animal, and some biological processes—complex brain disorders, say, or anything involving lungs—are best studied in mammals rather than fish. But for most other experiments, from watching tumors develop to screening for new drugs, zebrafish are gaining ground.Zebrafish offer three major advantages over rodents. First, they quickly make more zebrafish.

A Map Of The Internet Universe

Some people say they can feel storms coming. New re-search indicates chronic headache suffers might be able to sense lightning. In a study online today in the journal Cephalalgia, Uni-versity of Cincinnati researchers say that there’s a in-

A female spawns hundreds of embryos three days after fertilization; mice take three weeks to produce just 10 pups. They are also inexpensive to maintain—about 6.5 cents a day for a tank of a few dozen fish, compared with 90 cents for five mice in a cage. Finally, because larval fish are transparent, researchers can literally watch their organs grow, which makes them especially good for studying problems with organ development. (www.popsi.com)

FDA Approves First Robot For Hospital

Robots are taking over the world. Robo-nurses have been around for a while, but in the quest to make healthcare more efficient, another medical robot could soon be coming to a hospital near you.The FDA has just cleared RP-VITA, a telemedicine robot that can navigate autonomous-ly, for hospital use. The doc-bot allows a doctor to consult with patients and hospital staff remotely through an iPad interface.Built by InTouch Health and iRobot (creator of everyone’s favorite robot vacuum, the Roomba), RP-VITA can move independently around a busy ICU without bumping into other people or objects. It can be directed by tapping hospital locations on an iPad, and features electronic health record integration. It also has data ports to connect digital stethoscopes, ultrasounds and otoscopes, Fast Company reports.

Do You Know that?Weather Makes Basketball Popular Basketball is considered the number one spectators’ event in the country simply because it is usually held under a roof (at the Araneta Coliseum for example). Baseball and football could not gain popularity because Filipino spectators are not willing to seat under the scorching sun or heavy rains. It must be noted, however, that young Filipinos are beginning to switch to new games, such as billiards and computer games, because of the limited number of basketball courts in the country.

Filipinos Brought Home 3 Olympic Medals in 1932 Three Filipino athletes brought home a bronze medal apiece from the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. Swimmer Teofilo Yldefonso won a bronze at the 200-meter breaststroke event while Simeon Toribio also clinched a bronze in the high jump event. Jose “Cely” Villanueva clinched the country’s first boxing bronze medal in the bantamweight category.

Filipinos Won 9 Olympic Medals Filipino athletes have brought home a total of 9 Olympic medals since the country began participating in the quadrennial event in 1924. Teofilo Yldefonso, a 200-breastroke swimmer, won the country’s first bronze medal at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics and its second bronze at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. The country actually had 3 medals in 1932 when Simeon Torribio, a high jumper, added a bronze and bantamweight boxer Jose “Cely” Villanueva clinched another bronze. Miguel White, who fought for the country in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, won a bronze in the 400-meter hurdles event. Featherweight boxer Anthony Villanueva, a son of Jose, won the country’s first silver medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Villanueva actually lost a controversial decision to Russian Stanislav Stephaskin in their battle for the gold medal. Tenpin player Arianne Cerdena won a gold in bowling at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, but Cerdena’s gold was not included in the medal tally since bowling was considered only as a demonstration sport. Light flyweight boxer Leopoldo Serantes, however, brought home a bronze from Seoul. Light flyweight boxer Roel Velasco won a bronze at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. In taekwondo, bantamweight Stephen Fernandez and featherweight Bea Lucero brought home two bronze medals from Barcelona, but they were not included in the medal tally, since taekwondo was just counted as a demonstration sport then. Roel’s younger brother Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco won a silver at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Onyok lost a controversial decision to Bulgarian Daniel Bojilov in the light-flyweight finals.

RP Became Far Eastern Games Champion At the inaugural Far Eastern Games in 1913, the Philippines beat China to clinch the championship. Only the two countries competed in the event in 1913 and 1915 while Japan joined in 1917 and Indonesia in 1934. From 1913 to 1934, China won 9 championships and the Philippines only one championship.

RP Placed 2nd at Asian Games The Philippines placed second to Japan among 18 participating countries in 8 sports events at the 1954 Asian Games held in Manila. It also placed second behind Japan among 20 participating countries in 13 sports events at the 1958 Asian Games held in Tokyo.

Filipinos Won 56 Asiad Gold Medals The Philippines has hauled in a total of 56 gold medals since it began participating in the 1951 New Delhi Asian Games. When the country hosted the 1954 Asian Games, Filipino athletes captured 14 gold medals, good enough to make the country second to Japan in the medal tally. It also placed second to Japan in the 1958 Tokyo Asiad when Filipino athletes brought home nine gold medals.

Filipino Boxers Won 5 Asian Golds in 1954When Manila hosted the Asian Games in 1954, five Filipino boxers won a gold medal each. These boxers were flyweight Ernesto Sajo, bantamweight Alejandro Ortuoste, lightweight Celedonio Espinosa, lightwelterweight Ernesto Porto, and middleweight Vicente Tunacao. Four decades later, three Filipino boxers brought home a gold medal each from the 1994

Hiroshima Asiad. These boxers were light flyweight Mansue-to Velaco, Reynaldo Galido and E;ias Recaido.

RP Placed 2nd in Sea Games The Philippines placed second to Indonesia in the 1991 Southeast Asian Games held in Manila, with 91 gold, 62 silver and 84 bronze medals and nearly edged out Indonesia which got 92 gold medals. In 1983, the Philippines was also second behind Indonesia in the medal tally, after getting 49 gold medals. The Philippines began participating in Sea Games in November 1977, where it placed third behind Indonesia and Thailand with 31 gold medals.

Dumapong Won a Bronze in Paralympics The Philippines got its first bronze medal in the Paralym-pic Games 2000 courtesy of weightlifter Angeline Du-mapong who lifted 110 kilograms to win the bronze in the women’s 82.5-kilogram division in Sydney, Australia in December 2000. Paralympics is a major sports competition participated in by differently-abled athletes from around the world and held just after the Olympics.

Velasco Won a Bronze at Goodwill Games The Philippines got its first and only medal at the Good-will Games in New York in July 1998 when flyweight Roel Velasco outclassed an American opponent to win the bronze.
