Pitch In. Help Out. Give Back. On May 6, the Community Relations Committee

(CRC) of the Jewish Federation partnered with the Big Sunday organization to do just that. Over 400 people came together to contribute more than 10,000 acts of kindness including: 5,000 articles of clothing, 2,500 pounds of food, 2,000 books, and over 500 gift bags, handwritten cards for the military, flowerpots for shut-ins, potholders decorated for women in Darfur, and more. We also had groups of people travel to the Ronald McDonald House to bake cookies and help clean around the house, Miller Children’s Hospital to visit the children there and donate goody bags for families who needed to make visits on short notice, and Stanford Middle School to beautify the campus by planting trees.

How Big Sunday Started The Big Sunday organization started as a Mitzvah Day for Temple Israel of Hollywood. In 1999, they started expanding beyond their synagogue and calling the event Big Sunday. They had about 300 people participate that year. Over the past 12 years, Big Sunday has grown tre-mendously. This year, they expected over 50,000 people to participate in over 500 projects across Southern California. People of all ages and skill levels participate in any projects they can. During the 2011 event, Big Sunday volunteers donated over 85 truckloads of goods. The planning for the Long Beach participation in Big Sunday started in November of 2011 when David Levinson, the founder and executive direc-tor of Big Sunday joined a committee of about 20 to tell us about Big Sundays past and how the Jewish Federation could become a hub for the Long Beach area. David said, “We were really ex-cited when the Jewish Federation reached out to us about having a hub in Long Beach,” and “I hope it’s the beginning of a long relationship.” Over the next few months, this committee met not just to plan our projects for the day, but to en-sure this was a community wide event. Our commit-tee had representatives from the Jewish Community

Partnership Agencies: Alpert JCC, Beach Hillel, Hebrew Academy, and JFCS; as well as represen-tatives from the New Leaders Forum and Women’s Philanthropy through the Jewish Federation. Con-gregation Shir Chadash, Shul by the Shore, Tem-ple Beth David, Temple Beth Shalom, Temple Beth Israel and NCJW worked to create projects for Big Sunday. A special thank you to Beach Hillel student Dillon Einbund for playing music for us dur-ing the day.

Volunteers Come Together to Pitch In. Help Out. Give Back. We were also thrilled to have over 75 students from Mary Star of the Sea Catholic High School in San Pedro. We needed help moving the hundreds of pounds of food and clothing around the build-ing and they were great helpers. They also had lots of fun participating in our projects and earning community service hours towards their graduation. Some of them had already accumulated the hours they needed, but Krissy Cavanaugh, the school’s services coordinator, said, “It wasn’t hard to con-vince the students to do it. They thought it would be fun. It’s good to get them out of San Pedro so they can see other communities and interact with different people.” Craig Kain, the chair of the CRC and chair of Big Sunday at the Federation, worked tirelessly coordi-nating all of those who participated to make this day a success. “I want to thank all the volunteers that came to the Alpert JCC or went to one of our other projects in the community for participating in this day. When we began the planning, we had a vision of a successful Big Sunday event but we nev-er imagined we would see such a great outpouring

of support from the Long Beach community.” Craig continues, “I was overwhelmed by all the volunteers and donations that were brought to the AJCC for Big Sunday.”

Community Donations & Sponsorships Make It HappeneeeMany of the projects required supplies that were either generously donated or un-derwritten by our sponsors. A huge thank you to Arlene & Rick Freeman- 2nd St. Beau-ty, Yehudis & Yitzy Geisinsky, Jerry Kaufman & Bryna Kane, Michelle Gordon, Performance Plus Tires, Garry Plotkin, Shirley & Gene Ross, Trader Joe’s, Ernest Packaging Company, Pioneer Packaging Company, Bagelry and Bistro, Oroweat Bakery Outlet (Los Alamitos), and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (Marina Marketplace) for their sponsor-ships.eeeThe Jewish Federation’s executive direc-tor, Deborah Goldfarb, summed up the day like this; “The Jewish religion commands us to do mitzvot, but we wanted to help more than Jewish people, so we decided to orga-

nize this volunteering day and help as many peo-ple as possible.” The Jewish Federation is a place “where great things happen every day.” On May 6, thousands of great things happened. Check out more photos from Big Sunday on page 5.

Federation and Foundation Honoring New and Current Leaders On June 14, at 7:00 pm, the Jewish Federation and Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Long Beach and West Orange County will hold their Joint Annual Meeting at the Alpert Jewish Community Center. During the evening, the two organizations will review their successes, elect and install new Board Mem-bers, graduate 16 New Leaders, and celebrate the Neuberger Award Winner and Bob Baldwin Award Winners. The entire commu-nity is invited to join us for wine and hors d’oeuvres at 6:00 pm before the meeting begins. Jim Breslauer, Jewish Federation President and Judi Lentzner, Jewish Community Foundation President will review the year, install incoming board members, and congratulate retiring board members.

Barbara and Leon Shoag will receive the Bob Baldwin Community Service Award. The Baldwin award recognizes dedicated volun-teers for years of outstanding service through Tzedakah, responsibility and support for Israel. The award is in memo-ry of Robert Baldwin (1919-1992) whose life epitomized these principles, who was a loving role model for all whose lives he touched. Barbara and Leon have been dedicated members of the Long Beach Jewish Com-munity since they arrived in 1972. They have both served on numerous boards and committees throughout the community including The Jewish Federation and Jewish Community Foundation, Temple Israel, Long Beach Hillel and the Alpert JCC. Barbara also served as Presi-dent of Federation Women’s Division and currently is the

President of the CSuLB Jewish Studies Board. The Greater Long Beach Jewish Community cannot thank them enough for the dedication that they have shown to making this com-munity a better place. Emily Sukman will re-ceive the Fred Neuberger Young Leadership Award. This award recognizes some-one age 45 or younger with a vision for strengthening our Jewish community, the desire and ability to motivate oth-ers to become active in the Jewish community, and the ability to become a top Federation leader. Emily is a graduate on the New Leaders Forum leadership development program and co-chaired the 2012 Wom-en’s Philanthropy vISIONS dinner this year. Emily and her husband, Jesse, are re-cent additions to our com-munity and they are involved

at Temple Beth Shalom. The Greater Long Beach Jewish Community is truly lucky to have Emily’s dedication and her desire to make this com-munity a better place. Lastly, sixteen New Lead-ers Forum participants will be graduating from the nine month leadership develop-ment program that they have been a part of during 2011 and 2012. They will share with those in attendance in-sights about themselves and leadership that they have learned during their time in the program. These six-

teen emerging leaders will make a huge difference in our community. We are cur-rently seeking applicants for the 2012-2013 year. Please contact Khatera Zubin at [email protected] if you are interested or know someone who would be a good candidate. Please plan on joining us on June 14 to congratu-late the award winners and the New Leaders Forum graduates. Please RSvP to Yolanda Placencio at [email protected] or 562-426-7601 ExT 1314.

Have you ever really stopped to considersome of the important benefits that yourchild will gain when they learn how to swim?Consider this bit of sobering information.Drowning is still the second highest cause ofdeath among children under 18. Teachingchildren even the basics of pool safety willsave lives. Understanding basic rules suchas “do not run around the pool” or “do notdive into the shallow end” will not only teacha healthy respect for the water, but will helpto prevent easily avoidable tragedies.

Swimming is an important part of your child’s fitness development. Asschools cut back on physical education opportunities for children, swimmingserves as an excellent form of exercise. And as he or she becomes more pro-ficient in the water, swimming promotes self-confidence and a sense ofaccomplishment within your child.

Learning to swim can develop essential life skills in a child. Children learnhow to set goals for themselves and work to achieve them. They developways to motivate themselves and to deal with pressure. And they have fundoing it, which brings us to the well-known social benefits of swimming.Learning to swim enables your child to enjoy hanging out at the pool withfamily and friends without experiencing fear or anxiety.

Beginning with Tiny Tots (3-5 years old), the Alpert JCC has a group swimclass that is perfect for your child. Give them a head-start on their summerfun by signing up today.

Performance Is a Small Partof Teen Summer Stock

Shakespeare said, “The play’s the thing.” But the teens that participate inthe AJCC’s Teen Summer Stock program soon realize that the play isn’t theonly thing. There’s also the friendships, life lessons, the uncovering of apassion…perhaps even finding a path to young adulthood.

AJCC Summer Stock alumnus Arielle Miller said, “Being in Summer Stockallowed me to further explore my passion for singing and acting. It alsogave me another benefit that I didn’t fully appreciate until later in life, andthat was being able to hang out and socialize with other Jewish teens.”Arielle’s Summer Stock resume includes parts in Guys & Dolls and Greaseand playing the lead in both Music Man and Bye Bye Birdie. She went onto graduate from UC Irvine with a degree in Voice with an emphasis in VocalPerformance.

This year’s Teen Summer Stock production is 13: The Musical. With anunforgettable rock score from Tony Award-winning composer Jason RobertBrown, 13 is a hilarious high-energy musical for all ages about discoveringthat cool is where you find it, and sometimes where you least expect it.

Studies continue to prove thephysical and emotional benefits of even a single massage therapy session.Regardless of the adjectives we assign to it (pampering, rejuvenating, therapeutic)or the reasons we seek it out (a luxurious treat, stress relief, pain management),massage therapy can be a powerful ally in your healthcare regimen.

Experts estimate that upwards of ninety percent of all disease is stress related. Andperhaps nothing ages us faster, internally and externally, than high stress.Massage therapy can be an effective weapon in your stress management arsenal. eeMary Lowen, JFCS Director of Older Adults Services, has brought her passion, com-mitment, dedi-cation, and big heart to serving seniors

at JFCS for over 20 years. Knowing that all good things eventually must come to an end, Mary has decided to pursue other dreams and will be leaving the agency at the end of June. Knowing she has helped thousands of clients over the years, we all wondered who of the many she has served might stand out for her. With-out hesitation Mary says that the Holocaust Survivors through Café Europa are by far the most inspirational and amazing people she has ever had the privilege to meet. Their resilience, en-gagement and willingness to share their stories so that oth-ers might never suffer again have made an indelible mark on her forever. One of her proudest moments in fact was arranging for a Holocaust survivor to speak at the Long Beach elementary school she attended as a child so that she could be sure the next generation would never forget and could never deny what had happened. She goes onto to say that some of her other favorite clients are those that have been on the surface some of the hardest to deal with. In one example, she was

called in to work with a man being threatened with evic-tion for repeatedly hitting his neighbors with a cane. As might be predicted, the cli-ent met Mary with the same velocity of anger and resis-tance he had shown others until Mary finally screamed at him, “I am not going to abandon you no matter how miserably you treat me!” Fi-nally, he softened. Mary was able to get beyond his out-ward presentation and bra-vado and recognize this man was terrified of letting anyone near him for fear of losing his independence. Not only did she stop his outbursts, but she managed to foster reconcilia-tion between him and his two estranged children. Both chil-dren were extremely grateful for the opportunity to connect with their father before his death. When asked how she manages to stay strong in the face of all the losses and grief Mary says she just re-members how grateful she is to be of service and says a good dose of humor, as well as a strong supportive team keep her going. “What I have seen has been both awesome and humbling,” she says. “The older adults help me as much as I help them and I make sure they know that. Their resilience, humor and survival skills not only make me feel blessed and honored, but have also taught me to not fear aging. Personally I think we get bet-ter with each decade and I feel stronger and stronger!”

Fellow staff member Elaine Porzucki says, “Mary is a fighter. She fights for her client’s rights. This includes talking to government agen-cies, client’s families, anyone who will help her client get what they need. I will truly miss her wisdom, expertise and smile.” Everyone at JFCS shares this sentiment and are grate-ful for her 20 years of service helping seniors live with dig-nity and grace. Wendy Pu-zarne says, “We are very sor-ry indeed Mary is leaving but are happy to be welcoming one of her protégé’s as her successor, Chris Goldman. Mary says when she began this work she had no idea how many people really have no one there to care for them – no family, no friends, no resources and nowhere to turn for help. Mary has worked hard for JFCS to be their lifeline and anchor and never wants any of them to forget that there are people who care. Mary’s only regret is that we are not able to reach more of those in need. She estimates that 90-95% of the seniors she sees are below the poverty level and thinks if people could see the gratitude in her client’s eyes, they too would be as pas-sionate as she is about senior services. For anyone who wants to help those that are elderly, alone and in need, Mary suggests you consider mak-ing a donation to JFCS - Old-er Adult Services Program in her honor. Mary will be

The Fountain of YouthBy Mrs. Bluma Marcus, Director of Los Alamitos Hebrew High

Today is Helen Fox’s 92nd birthday. In honor of this momentous occasion we have decided to bake Challah together. To knead the dough, let it rise and say the blessing together. Some-thing Jewish women have been doing for thousands of years. As we are waiting for the dough to rise, Helen offers to make me a cup of coffee. I’m expecting cof-fee like most grandmothers make. You know, made from instant coffee that has been sitting in the pantry for a few years. But not so for Helen. She shows me her high-tech percolator and proceeds to brew me a fresh cup. I’m amazed. I can only hope that when I am ninety-two I will be able to do the same; to be able to measure and pour and carry the piping hot mugs to the table. We sit down and start what has been one of the most enlightening conversa-tions I have ever had. I am

wondering what the secret to her longevity is. Not just that she is ninety-two, but that she is still living by her-self in her beautiful home on the beach. That she makes such wonderful coffee. That she knows and remembers

not just the names of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but also, the names of all my children, their ages and the schools they go to. So I ask her. What is the secret to her fountain of youth?

I am expecting to hear all kinds of answers. Of the special diets she kept. Of the specific hours she’s slept. Of all the things us regular people indulge in that sup-posedly shortens our lifes-pan. And I’m ready to give up all of my bad habits just so I can be like her. Her answer: Be positive. Give charity. And I think, how right she is. A special diet won’t get us past hardship. All the sleep in the world won’t give us meaning. But seeing the beauty and good each of us has been blessed with can push us past the inevi-table bumps that come our way. When the focus of our lives is on others instead of ourselves, those self serving and destructive behaviors cannot take hold. Who knew that the elu-sive fountain of youth was hiding inside each one of us?

Students Raise the Bar for Excellence

Silver Gan Israel Summer Aerial Buzz

42 Years of Alumni

New Learning Environments and Outdoor Classrooms

Hebrew Academy Hun-tington Beach students raise the bar for excellence with an overwhelming majority graduating with honors. Our school starts in preschool, which means that many of the graduates have been learning and growing to-gether for over thirteen years. They have learned not only how to read, write and ana-lyze English and Hebrew, but more importantly, they have learned how to apply their academics to their lives in or-der to make a positive differ-ence in the world. Our mission has four main tenets – we work to help our students develop intellectual-ly, emotionally, socially and spiritually. When our alumni are asked what they remem-ber from their school days, their answers never cease to be a center of pride for all their teachers, administrators,

Rabbis and parents. The stu-dents, who become amazing citizens in vocations such as doctors, lawyers, entrepre-neurs, religious leaders, art-ists, writers, educators, CPAs, domestic engineers and more, remember the close knit feeling they had here. They remember learning how to recite a poem or passage, they can comfortably rely on their experience when plan-ning their preparations for a holiday, they fondly speak of their days in Silver Gan Israel or their fieldtrips to Los Angeles or New York. They can cite many of their in and out of class experiences as pivotal in their development into outstanding human be-ings and citizens. During this month’s Town Hall Meeting, the students who have earned a 3.50 or higher GPA in all Judaic and General Studies classes combined for the first semes-ter were announced. Stu-dents take all core academic subjects (math, science, Eng-lish, Hebrew and history), plus physical education and

art for general studies. In Judaic studies, students at-tend classes such as Torah studies and Judaic philoso-phy. One hundred percent of our 7th grade boys earned this high honor, while 77% of the 8th grade girls achieved the same status. Additionally, The Hebrew Academy participates in the California Young Scholars program. Through this pro-gram, teachers and admin-istrators are able to nomi-nate one student from each grade, third through eighth grades. We are very proud of the students who were nominated this year, and we look forward to seeing these students go out into the world and do great things. This year, we are proud to announce the 35th An-nual Graduation Ceremony to honor our 2012 eighth grade graduates. We wish them well and look forward to hearing about their adult pursuits. The ceremony will be held on June 13 in the new value Circle.

The buzz begins this sum-mer for Silver Gan Israel Day camp as they announce their new aerial arts program, which includes instruction and performances in aerial arts, trapeze, cube, inventive apparatus and dance. “SGI is just the place where your child will fly high with excite-ment. We instill in our camp-

ers a healthy dose of love for Judaism,” said Sender Engel, the camp director. “We fig-ure if our campers are going to be flying high with excite-ment, let them really fly high.” The ACA accredited program runs from Monday, June 25 through Friday, August 24. Every day will be packed with laser tag, swimming, field trips, hamster balling, arts & crafts, sports and much more. Parents will be happy to know that their children are in a safe environment and will come home daily with new lessons,

friends, skills and spirited camp songs. The phenom-enal counselors are positive role models and have a spe-cial warm touch. The summer camp pro-gram is for children ages two thru fifteen and is con-veniently located off the 405 freeway, 5 miles from Long Beach. Parents can learn more, register and request a DvD or camp tour by visiting www.CampSGI.com or by contacting Sender at ExT 221 or by email at [email protected].

The Hebrew Academy has always been on the cusp of technology, with Mrs. Short leading the computer charge into the future. We have a growing online pres-ence with the school website and specialized Facebook pages for current parents, the high school and a profile named Hebrew Academy Huntington Beach. There is also a new Alumni Facebook group that is growing weekly and getting updated twice or three times a week with mazel tovs, alumni news, and more. There are over 2,000 alumni of the Hebrew Acad-emy and Mrs. Nechama Eilfort, new Alumni Associa-

tion Coordinator, is working closely with school staff and alumni to plan many projects for the group. One such proj-ect is the quarterly e-newslet-ter which is gaining subscrib-ers. The newsletter includes Connections: an interview with an alumnus, A Word from Your Teacher, pictures and more. Another project is the Alumni Reunion which will take place in about a year’s time and will take leader-ship from within the ranks of the students of the school. To contact Nechama Eilfort for more information, message her on Facebook or send an email to [email protected]

Through the generous donations of many Annual Auction attendees, we were able to construct outdoor learning pads that will sup-port classrooms from the B and C Buildings and more. After conducting re-search on grouping students and creating authentic learn-ing environments, we found that offering this outdoor learning situation gives teach-ers and students opportuni-ties to learn in a variety of manners. The teachers can send small groups of students

out to work on their projects, run reading groups, and offer lessons that take advantage of the outdoors. Students can create poetry, read, and paint outdoors. With cre-ative students’ and teachers’ talents, we believe that this new environment will greatly enhance the learning experi-ence. Our students, teachers and administrators thank the donors for their generous support of the learning here at the Hebrew Academy.

A Fond Farewell By Anna Shabtay

eeeAfter almost three years, I am writing to say goodbye to the Greater Long Beach Jewish Community. I began as the Campaign Commu-nications Director in July of 2009 as a recent graduate from Hebrew union College with a Masters Degree in Jewish Communal Service and a Masters in Public Ad-ministration. I was welcomed with open arms into a com-

munity that was brand new to me. I hit the ground running on fundraising, marketing, and outreach for the Jewish Federation and learned as I went. I have interacted with so many interesting, sweet, and encouraging people in my work over the past three years. Working in the Jewish community is my passion and my calling. I know that the work that I did here made a difference in this community and it gives me great plea-sure to have been able to do it. The Greater Long Beach Jewish Community is special and has a feeling that many west coast communities do not have so keep it up! I will miss you all greatly but will remember you fond-ly. I am moving on as the Director of Marketing for the Memphis Jewish Community Center, my hometown JCC. Please keep in touch and if any of you ever find yourself in the South, don’t hesitate to look me up.
