The Keene ISD board voted unanimously during October’s board meeting to award the $61,750.00 contract to update the surveillance system at the KISD campus to Tim Parrish, Owner of Allstar Security and Protection of Keene, Texas. The job entails replacing outdated camera equipment in the high school building and adding additional cameras to improve campus supervision. Tim will also be working closely with Gary Kuykendall, the schools Technology Direc- tor, to make changes to the current system to enable it to operate more efficiently. Tim Parrish has been work- ing in the private security industry for 25+ years. Dur- ing the onset of the security innovation age, he worked for several of the foremost lead- ing companies in the industry, including Tandy Corporation and Hawk Security, a division of Progressive Concepts, be- fore starting his own security company in 2002. Tim’s vast technological knowledge of alarm programming and systems installation makes him the best candidate to undertake KISD’s surveillance expansion project. In addi- tion, Tim greatly supports the operations of KISD and has a vested interest in its success, being a member of the local Keene community since 1979 and also where the principal base of his operations, Allstar Security and Protection, is located. The security surveillance project is expected to begin in the coming weeks and be completed prior to the Christ- mas holidays. The majority of the work will be done when school is not in session to alle- viate any possible disruptions to the current system during regular class time hours. On Sunday, Oct. 29 the Keene Spanish Seventh-day Adventist Church (Iglesia His-pana Adventista del Septimo Dia) hosted the celebration of the 23rd annual International Fair or “Feria de las Naciones” at the Southwestern Adventist University Pultar Pavilion. Admission was free and the

fair included a host of activi-ties and events with interests for all age groups including a Castle Bounce and a colorful parade representing a number of Latin American countries with participants wearing tra-ditional attires of their respec-tive countries. International music, foods and drinks were offered to the public. This event is traditionally

held on the last weekend in October. Carmen L.Curubo, the event coordinator stated that “this event first began as

a church related international pot-luck with only 75 people in attendance. In the last few years of this event however, attendance has averaged about 2,100. This year 21 countries were represented at the fair.

“The proceeds generated have always been dissemi-nated to charitable, church related activities such as local volunteer clinics, community services and various church related clubs. This year” says Curubo, “the funds generated by the fair will go towards restoring and re-opening the church gymnasium which is the site for all extra-curricular church related activities including weekly Sabbath pot-lucks. The gym is also open two times a week to the general public for recreational activities. The gym is where we do everything, including Saturday night social activi-ties.”Carmen Curubo extends

heart-felt thanks for the com-munity support and South-western Adventist University for the use of Pultar Pavilion.

To the residents of Keene: On October 24th Paul Gnadt called me and wanted to send me some questions to answer in the race for mayor. I asked him when the deadline was for submit-ting, he replied “no later the 5pm Monday” the 22nd of October. By 10am Monday my answers were emailed to the paper. They were to be displayed in the Burleson Area Star on October 24th. On the 23rd Paul called and

told me that Mayor Acker-mann was not able to submit his answers and they were holding until the next week for publication. On the 30th Paul calls to

tell me that they will not run the answers in print but only in the on-line version of the Burleson Area Star. I wonder had I been a few

hours late...would the paper-have been so courteous? So I have purchased space to present my answers to the Paul Gnadt questions. Dan E Roberts

Q: Should the city be done with annexation for a while?

A: YES!!, I am not in favor of any further involuntary annexation. We need to take care of what we have already and not stretch our resources any more to cover additional annexations. We need to be at a place where our neighbors want to be-come a part of Keene and that their annexing would be beneficial for both parties. No more one sided situa-tions.

Q: What ordinances will you insist be enforced or new or-dinances will you promote to stop the spread of blight in Keene?

A: I know I would promote one new ordinance to stop the throwing of newspapers, magazine or other flyers in the driveways and yards of our citizens. Only excep-tion is if the resident had a current subscription with that entity. NO more weekly papers/circulars that we have to be pick up from our driveways and yards to throw away. All ordinances need to

be enforceable or the city council needs to remove them from the code of ordi-nances. The city has plenty of ordinances to monitor and prevent further decline in our city. The city will need to work with each property owner to ascertain what the city can do to encourage im-provements to their property.

Q: The city is paying Southwestern Adven-tist University $500 a month rent the facil-ity used as City Hall. What do you think the

city should do about City Hall?

A: The city should have never sold the property in the first place. It was paid for and it still could be a work-able building for the city. That being said, my opinion is that the city needs to look for property that is not in a prime commercial area and one that is somewhat centrally located. The city could either re-

model an existing building or build a new facility that would accommodate the police and fire departments as well. It is time for the city to get seri-ous about our future city hall.

Q: What is wrong with Keene and how can it be fixed? As mayor, what role will you play in the repair job?

A: There is nothing wrong with Keene. Keene is a bedroom community and we need to be able to accept that as reality. Our claim to fame is and has been our educational facilities. Families for years have

come to Keene to be edu-cated or to educate their children and at least one of the family wage earners normally work in the Fort Worth and Dallas metroplex. As they travel to and from their work centers they are fortunate to be able to shop for goods and services at no additional time or expense and at lower prices that are available in Keene. We need to quit spending

money on surveys and stud-ies to see what businesses

will work in Keene. The city spent over $60,000 last year in economic studies and what did they really achieve? As mayor I will continue to

seek business and industry to come to our area, but I will also endeavor to help our ex-isting businesses to become more productive and benefi-cial to the citizens. A public relations campaign

needs to be implemented from the top down…so that our Welcome sign really portrays our sincerity to be-come good neighbors. Our city hall needs to give the ap-pearance that we are a warm safe community to all that enters it.

Q: How do you intend to promote and ad-here to the new strate-gic plan?

A: Unfortunately, I do not know what the new strategic plan is. Again, if the city has adopted a plan they need to share it with the citizens. I want to be able to conduct town meetings to involve the community before any situa-tion gets to a boiling point. Inform the citizens as to the

direction the council is look-ing to move and we all move together. It really bothers me when I go to council meet-ings and I ask a question and their response is “we discussed that in previous meetings you should have been there.” No wonder the council meetings are only at-tended by a select few every meeting. The late comers do not feel welcomed. The council meetings should be for everyone and not just the

“yes” people.

Q: Should the council allocate money from the reserve fund for another firefighter, for street repair, another code enforcement per-son to monitor ordi-nances, or what?

A: Reserve funds should only be used for emergency items, not budgeted items. I disagree with the use of a portion of the reserve fund in this year’s budget. The city had $170,000.00

more expenditures than revenue. The council voted to raise taxes 1 cent which increased revenue by $30,000.00. That left a short-fall $140,000.00 and by the recommendation of the city administrator the council voted to move $140,000 out of the surplus fund to bal-ance the budget for this fis-cal year. The city should not use surplus funds to balance a budget. Unless we can increase the city revenues by $140,000.00 in the next 11 months, the city will be short another $140,000.00 in next year’s budget.

Q: As mayor, what do you hope to accom-plish in the next two years?

A: I would hope to make the city hall more accessible to the citizens of Keene. Whether it is information they seek or a meeting they want to attend I want them to feel as if they really matter. I want to be able to a part

of a team making Keene

known as a smart friendly city in Johnson County. Not a speed trap reputation with unsolved crime in our town. I want to be able to see that

all employees treat all citi-zens and visitors fairly and equitable. I want to be able to say that all public officials are treated equal with the citizens in my next two years of service to Keene.

Q: Why should I vote for you?

A: If you like the way your roads are being main-tained…do not vote for me!If you like the way the

council uses reserve funds to balance the budget…do not vote for me!If you like our reputation as

a “speed trap”…do not vote for me!If you like your taxes and

your water rates….do not vote for me.If you like the way the city

annexes property…do not vote for me!If you like the inequality in

enforcing ordinances…do not vote for me!If you like the closed door

attitude of city hall…do not vote for me!However, If you have a

desire to see things improve and treat the city as a busi-ness for the citizens and not for any special inter-est group…then I strongly urge you to vote for Dan E Roberts.

In 1979, 24 people would convene on Saturdays in an old building in Cleburne. The building was owned by the Texas Conference. The group was then organized as a church under the name Seventh-day Adventist Spanish Church of Cleburne. In the course of a year, Pastor

Jose Piantini was appointed as its first official pastor. Under his leadership and with the blessings of God, the small group of parishioners began the construction of a church building on East Henderson Street in Cleburne. The parish-ioners bought seven acres for the construction of a sanctuary with capacity for 275 people and five classrooms, at a cost of $230,000.After construction, Pastor

Piantini accepted a called and was transferred. Pastor Bobby Roberts served as a pastor from 1987 until 1989. In 1989, Pastor Orlando Perez was ap-pointed as the new pastor of the church, which at that time was at 200 parishioners. Pastor Perez, along with the parish-ioners, paid off the balance due on the church construction project three years earlier than anticipated.During the next five years

more parishioners joined mem-bership to increase the total to 275. Attendance grew so that church service attendance av-eraged 350 to 400. It was then necessary to schedule two wor-ship services on Saturdays to accommodate the large number of people. In September 1994 the name

of the church was officially changed to the “Keene Sev-enth-day Adventist Church” or “Keene Hispania.” Property was purchased on Hwy 67 in Keene, between College Drive and Old Betsy Road (FM 2280) which is the present location of the church building and the gymnasium/audito-rium.The membership of the Keene

(Spanish) Seventh-day Ad-ventist Church today is made up of individuals and families from various countries in Latin America including Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Gua-temala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Venezuela and the United States. The majority of its parishioners are Keene residents. Church membership is composed of 20%, adults, 50% young people and 30% children.

With the generous offer-ings of its parishioners, each school year the Keene (Span-ish) Seventh-day Adventist Church helps support its young parishioners attend the Keene Adventist Elementary School, Chisholm Trail Academy and Southwestern Adventist Uni-versity.

Mission Statement: The mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is to proclaim to all the people the everlasting gospel in the context of the message of the three angels in Revela-tion 14:6-12, guiding each individual to accept Jesus as their personal Savior, join the church and prepare for His soon return.

Weekly Services: Worship services are held weekly on Saturdays mornings at 9:15 – 12 noon.

On January 6, 1894 sixty-seven people met on a wooded hill between Alvarado and Cleburne and signed their

names as charter members of the Keene Seventh-day Ad-ventist Church. For more than ten years these early members met for services on the campus of the newly-founded Keene Industrial Academy. In 1905 they moved into a meeting hall that they had constructed several blocks southeast of the academy. The first Seventh-day Ad-

ventist Church in Keene was built in 1904 on the corner of what is now Fairview & Third Street. It was built to accommodate 300 to 400 people, but as people came to the area looking for Christian Education for their children, the church building had to be enlarged. Several times the congregation embarked on remodel/expansion projects to manage the growth that was experienced over the first fifty years or so. During this time, the church was largely used as a training facility for students being prepared to pastor other churches when they finished their studies. The Bible teach-ers for the college supervised these students and offered ad-ditional ministry support to the members. The foundation for the current

church facility was poured in 1956 as church membership topped 1,000. Over the years the church has been enlarged to provide additional space for classrooms with the addition of the Sabbath School Com-plex and Chapel. The Youth

Center/Church Office Com-plex was completed in early 2003 rounding out the current church facility.A Church School, now known

as Keene Adventist Elementary School was begun to provide education for the younger chil-dren. And when Southwestern Union College was officially

recognized as a senior college in 1967, the Keene Church was asked to assume responsibility for the academy. In 1975 Ch-isholm Trail Academy moved into its present facility. With the growth of the schools, the church continued to increase in membership as well.During its 118 year history,

the Keene Church has grown from those first daring and ex-cited sixty-seven charter mem-bers to now serve as the church home for more than 2,900. In addition to its current mem-bers, over the years a large number of former members have moved to other commu-nities to help plant and grow more than 10 new congrega-tions in Johnson County. “We continue to pray that God will expand His kingdom in this

community, as well as in our hearts, as we work and wait for the promised return of Jesus.”MinistriesThe ministries of the Keene

Article by Joyce Anne YatesRick Brockman, KJH 8th grade science and English

instructor,as well as an avid collector of historical artifacts from

the civil war, WWI and WWII, brought some items from his personal collection to show his students. The students had been reading The Diary of Anne Frank and

had visited the Holocaust Museum in Dallas. Now they were able to see some of the actual items used during WWII and learn

more about this part of Ameri-can and World history. The students were fascinated

and amazed at the items and Mr. Brockman's expertise in describing their use and see-ing the soldier's uniforms and other artifacts from the past. A strong focus at Keene Junior High this year is Rachel's Challenge, where students are encouraged to show accep-tance, respect and kindness to each other. They are learning that if everyone learned and practiced these good character traits, war would not be a part of their lives or world.
