“One nation indivisible under trees.”
Earth Day ○ Thursday, April 22 Everyday is Earth Day, but one day of the year is set aside to celebrate the earth throughout
the world. That day is Thursday, April 22, when Pennswood will pay tribute to the day with
a special dedication to Earth’s most faithful servants— its trees.
From 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., there will be a table outside the Café, manned by members
of the EarthCare Committee, who will hand out fact sheets about the “Secret Life of Trees”
and lists of organizations that promote them. Thanks to an anonymous donor, there will
also be an opportunity to sign up to have a tree planted in your name by American Forests
in various locations across the country. If interested in a walking tour of Pennswood’s most
majestic trees, please indicate your interest on a sign-up
sheet at the table; you will be notified later of the tour’s
time.
A tree planting ceremony
will be held at noon Thursday
in the Front Circle.
Pennswood Residents will do
a choral reading of a poem by
Mary Oliver.

Keith Baker, artistic director emeritus of Bristol Riverside Theatre (BRT),
will present “The Broadway Musical Theatre, A Celebration” (from
operettas to the 21st Century, from Victor Herbert to Stephen Sondheim and beyond). This is a performance
you will not want to miss to chase those Covid blues away.
Keith Baker trained under Sanford Meisner and Martha Graham at the Neighborhood Playhouse, under John Houseman and Michael Langham at Julliard, and in advanced music studies at the University of Freiberg. Prior to joining BRT, he was Artistic Director of the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival and the original Florida Repertory Theatre. In 2001, Keith was invited by the US State Department to collaborate with artistic directors in Armenia. Subsequently, he brought an original Armenian production of Forget
Herostratus back to BRT. He has also directed over 90 productions of plays and musicals at BRT, among them Gypsy (starring Tovah Feldshuh), The Pirates of Penzance, Dear World (nominated for three Barrymore Awards), Chicago (nominated for six Barrymore Awards), The Balken Women (winner of the Barrymore Award for outstanding New Play), The Dresser (Barrymore Award nominated for Outstanding Direction of Play), Pride and Prejudice, Laughter on the 23rd Floor, Lost in Yonkers (nominated for two Barrymore Awards), Ragtime (nominated for nine Barrymore Awards), Rumors, Man
of La Mancha, Working: a Musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Producers, The Sunshine Boys, and Next to Normal. For Jesus Christ Superstar, Keith won the Philadelphia Critics Association Award for Best Director.
As an actor, he won the Broadway World Award for Best Actor in a Drama for Old Wicked Songs. He has
been nominated 11 times and was twice the recipient of the Carbonell Awards for Best Actor. Keith has been Artistic Director of BRT for 28 years.

Linens Retire Too!
Clap your paws or hands or anything you’ve got for Pennswood’s Housekeeping
Department. Several times over the past four years, Marlene Arcolesse, Denise Foy, and
their coworkers have saved ready-to-be-retired towels, sheets, and blankets, so we can
drive them up to the local animal shelter in Lahaska.
Now, some tired, scared little cat has a soft place to cuddle and a no-longer-lost dog in
need of a bath will get towel-dried, prettied-up, and ready for adoption with the aid of our
retiring linens.
Check out the animal shelter wish list at https://www.bcspca.org/support/wish-list/. You
may have old linens or pet paraphernalia that you’re ready to donate to a good cause.
Thanks, Marlene, Denise, and crew!

RAMADAN MUBARAK (“BLESSED RAMADAN”) to our Muslim Friends & Neighbors
In 2021, Ramadan occurs from Monday, April 12 through Tuesday, May 11 and ends with Eid al-Fitr, a feast that sometimes lasts three days. Ramadan is one of the five pillars of the Islamic faith. Every year in the month of Ramadan, all Muslims fast from first light to sundown, abstaining from food, drink and sexual relations. The fast is regarded principally as a method of self-purification. By cutting oneself off from worldly comforts, a fasting person gains true sympathy with those who go hungry as well as growth in one’s spiritual life. The Quran states it is a way to get closer to God. It is also a time to exchange gifts among family and friends as well as a time of giving charity to those less fortunate.
Here’s a 13th century poem by Rumi about the joys of fasting during Ramadan:
There’s hidden sweetness in the stomach’s emptiness.
We are lutes, no more, no less.
If the sound box is stuffed full of anything, no music.
If the brain and belly are burned clean with fasting,
every moment a new song comes out of the fire.

CHANTICLEER, A PLEASURE GARDEN
Join us on Friday, May 21 as we travel to Chanticleer
Garden, known as the most romantic, imaginative and
exciting public garden in America, and perhaps in the
world. The garden is a study of textures and forms,
where foliage trumps flowers, the gardeners lead the
design, and even the drinking fountains are sculptural.
It is a garden of pleasure and learning, relaxing yet
filled with ideas to take home.
The picnic area at Chanticleer will be available for
lunch, however, everyone must bring their own lunch.
A boxed lunch can be ordered through Pennswood’s
Dining Services via a menu selection form which will
be distributed to each signee at a later date. The cost
of the lunch is $8.50 and will be billed on your
monthly statement.
The Pennswood Village bus will depart from the Link
door at 9:00 a.m. Our unguided tour will begin at
10:15 a.m. At 2:00 p.m., we will board the bus for
our trip back to Pennswood.
The $36 transportation charge and the $10 garden
admission will be billed on your monthly statement.
Social distancing will be enforced and you must wear
your mask.
A signup sheet is in the Transportation Office.
Signup deadline is Tuesday, April 27.

NEXT BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP—
Tuesday, May 11 at 10:30 a.m.
Our May 11 book will be
Clementine—The Life of Mrs.
Winston Churchill by Sonia
Purcell. Winston Churchill
claimed that victory in World
War II would have been
“impossible” without the
woman who stood by his side
for 57 turbulent years. Why,
then do we know so little about
her? Clementine shows just
how much Winston depended on his wife for solace,
inspiration and political advice. A terrible mother, but a
devoted and resourceful wife, this book brings
Clementine’s strengths and ambition to light.
The July 13 book will be Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell.
This is a recreation of the life of William Shakespeare
and his family in late 16th century Stratford-Upon-Avon,
the death of his young son, Hamnet, and it's painful
aftermath.
All are welcome. These books are available in the Penns-
wood Library or call Beth to borrow a Resident’s copy.
You do not need to have read the book to come.
We meet every other month on the second Tuesday at
10:30 a.m. (the upcoming 2021 dates for our group are
May 11, July 13, September 14, and November 9). For
questions or to add your name to the book group list,
contact Beth.
Join the ZOOM discussion either by computer or iPad
(visual and voice) OR by phone (voice only). You will
receive the Zoom link by email the day of the meeting).

George School News
It’s been a while since we’ve heard from our friends
and neighbors at George School. Here’s a sampling of
what’s going on:
The George School Math Team scored another
winning season during the 2020-2021
academic year, starting with their third straight first
-place win in the Philadelphia Math League
competition. The team also captured four of the top
ten individual spots.
George School is pleased to announce that Forest
Ho-Chen ’22 and Vinay Thulasiram ’23 have
scored high enough on the U.S. National
Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) Local Examination
to advance to USNCO National Examination
testing.
Seven George School students have been
selected to appear in the 2021 Phillips’ Mill Youth
Art Online Exhibition which will run through April
16, 2021. Ceramics student Morris Chang ’21 won
first place in the 3-D category.
Former Bucks County Poet Laureate and
retired George School English teacher Terence
(Terry) Culleton’s third collection of poems, A Tree
and Gone is a collection of fifty-four English
sonnets divided into three sections. Each section
explores aspects of our relationship to ourselves
and the natural world. According to Terry, “This
book has been fifteen years in the making. It’s nice
to have reached closure on it and to be able to share
it with others.”
More information can be found on the George School
Bulletin Board in Penn hallway. Hopefully by the fall
semester, we’ll be back together for in-person
activities and happenings at both campuses.
Sally Marrington,
George School Intergenerational Liaison
The George School campus is now open for Pennswood resident walkers. George School requests that you wear masks on campus. The pedestrian bridge into Newtown is locked, so there is no walking access into Newtown via their campus.
Also, you may begin to see Newtown Friends School faculty walking the meadow during their lunch break. In addition, the NFS cross county students will begin to use the meadow for distance running. They practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 3:30 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. Potentially, on Friday, April 16 and Friday, April 30, the lower school children will participate in “Friday Fun Runs.” Those details are not yet firm.
So, please be aware you may see students in the meadow. If you partake, enjoy your walk on the George School campus too.

POLST: Portable Medical Orders, or POLST for short.
POLST communicates your wishes as medical orders. This form needs to be completed with your provider.
A POLST form tells all health care providers during a medical emergency what you want:
“Take me to the hospital” or “I want to stay here” “Yes, attempt CPR” or “No, don’t attempt CPR” “These are the medical treatments I want” “This is the care plan I want followed”
POLST is for the seriously ill or frail
POLST gives seriously ill or frail people more specific direction over their health care treatments compared to advance directives and more options than Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) orders.
Be sure your family or POA is aware of your wishes and where your POLST is kept.
****Once completed, please hang your pink form on your refrigerator and keep
the business sized card in your wallet. If you have misplaced your wallet card,
please see Resident Health for a replacement.
