THE NEXT TWO WEEKS' EVENTSNew Year's Eve Concert

Tuesday, December 31, at 7:00 p.m. in Penn Hall

We hope you will be with us in Penn Hall, where our annual New Year's Eve jazz concert, this year featuring the Blue Skies Jazz Ensemble, kicks off at 7:00 p.m. Peter Reichlin, our friendly neighborhood piano technician, musician, and impresario, will not be on hand, since he has a gig as principal trombonist with the Capital Philharmonic of New Jersey, in Trenton. But he is sending us a stellar combo of talented performer/composers. (Good jazz musicians improvise as they perform, like their 18th century classical forebears).

We will welcome back Paul Midiri, whose virtuosity on vibes (vibraphone), trombone, and percussion has astonished us over the years, and his twin brother, Joe, who plays clarinet and soprano sax and does a stunning vocal takeoff on Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong . Also returning are Jim Lawlor, percussion and vocals, and Pat Mercuri, guitar and banjo. Since we are always looking for new musical voices we will also have Steve Varner, acoustic bass.

PVRA has arranged with Mary Cooley, Michael Schuckert, and other Dining Services folk to provide light refreshments in the Café after the concert. Our thanks to PVRA for their hospitality. Do bring a favorite food or drink indulgence to share, too, if you choose.

We have lost our much-loved team of piano accompanist Alice and song leader George, who used to organize group singing on New Year's Eve. If anyone can step up to replace them we can gather around our recently installed piano in Penn Hall Lounge after the concert. An easy way to be sure that your favorite song -- pop, Broadway, folk, whatever-- gets sung is to bring along a handful of copies of its words plus the music, if you have it or can download it.

Your Concerts Committee is happy to see out the old year and see in the new one with our fellow residents the best way that we know: with the happy sounds of uniquely American jazz, familiar songs, refreshments, and the pleasure of being together. We wish all Pennswood residents and staff a merry Christmas, happy holidays, and a healthy, happy, peaceful, and music-filled new year.

THIS WEEKS' EVENTS THE MEMORY ROUND TABLE

by Residents, for Residents

Friday, December 27 at 10:00 a.m. in the Game Room

Sunny Celebration and Brain Storm

Come to celebrate the end of our first year with levity and goodies, and join in a brain storm for topics, moderators and guests for future meetings. How would you rank the following for the future? Who would you like to hear?

1. What kind of care do we residents want when our time comes to have cognitive decline? Did Teepa Snow’s presentation affect your view? What role can residents play?

2. This is a forgiving community. Gold stars for trying. What does this suggest for resident action?

3. Music and rhythm make senior life enjoyable and healthy? Roles for music therapist at Pennswood?

4. Depression: how it can wreck memory and enjoyment. What residents can do about it at Pennswood?

5. Hearing II: Refresh the need for residents

to recognize and do something about hearing deficit.

6. Isolation: Is it a problem here at Pennswood? Is there a role for residents to help?

7. Depression: Report on new therapies? Pleasurable activities, positive thoughts?

8. Resident-led entertainments: Should there be more? What? Restore play reading?

9. Residents aging in Place II: What did we miss last time? What needs more discussion? Secret sauce?

10. The centrality of blood flow to the brain and what to do to enhance it. Walking? Dancing? Exercise?

11. The many kinds of intelligence there are. How knowing about them can help you and others.

12. How to best use iPhone, tablet, other aids to help memory and make you effective and self-reliant.

13. How to enhance the fun (and benefits) of socializing.

14. More?

Before coming to the meeting PLEASE give this some thought. Written suggestions will be welcome.

RESIDENTS' BIOGRAPHYEileen and Fred

Arrived at Pennswood: September 2019Eileen was born in Philadelphia. Her family moved to Akron, Ohio when she was five years old because her father was transferred to one of the big rubber companies there. The family returned to Pennsylvania five years later where Eileen attended Springfield Township High School. She then completed the degree program at Lankenau Hospital School of Nursing and completed a post-graduate course at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. Instead of specializing in ophthalmology, she decided to work as a Visiting Nurse for Eastern Montgomery County until their first child arrived. As a professional woman with, four children, she stopped her nursing career for 16 years to raise her family. When she returned to work, it was as an information specialist. She was the person who answered the 800 number, gave information and answered questions about a product. Eileen did this kind of work for several pharmaceutical companies.

Fred was born in Waterbury, CT, from whence he moved to Williamsport, PA. He graduated Williamsport High School, and then went to Penn State University, Temple School of Dentistry and Temple School of Orthodontics. After graduation, he joined a partnership practice in Jenkintown and Chestnut Hill. Fourteen years later, he left the partnership to set up private practices

in Chestnut Hill and in Newtown, where he worked for 22 years. Eileen helped in his office as an assistant or at the front desk, as needed.

Elieen and Fred were big on community activities. Beginning with Fred: he belonged to many professional organizations; he was the founder and president of the Temple Orthodontics Alumni Association, a member of Kiwanis and president of Newtown Rotary, president of the Gloria Dei Church Council, and president of the Abington Band Parents for five years. Meanwhile, Eileen chimed in with Jenkintown Day Nursery Board, Abington Hospital Junior Auxiliary, Gloria Dei Church Council and Lutheran Church Women, of which she was president. She designed uniforms for the band swing flag girls and formed a committee to make them. She does fundraising for a Historic Church committee, works on a garden club, and is a Quester. Fred and Eileen also did quite a bit of traveling in the U.S., the Caribbean, Europe, Canada and Israel. Eileen loved playing tennis, and Fred enjoyed coaching Little League. He was set construction chairman for Abington Music Theater for many years. We have no room for specifics, but the four children are very active as well as professionally accomplished. Fred and Eileen already have the feeling that Pennswood is their kind of place, and we agree.

STAFF AND RESIDENT NOTICESResident Artists to Honor the Seasons

The festivities will soon be over. Artists among us should prepare for another kind of event. The next show in the Resident Art Gallery is entitled “Seasons” and we will be receiving works for it on Thursday, January 9, 2020 between noon and 3:30 p.m.

Please make sure that you equip hanging works with a proper wire. For instance, the little hooks on standard photograph frames will not be accepted. If a work is not properly prepared, the members of the committee receiving the work will ask you to take it away and fix it before bringing it back within 24 hours. This is a new policy to avoid disappointment among artists whose work has not been accepted for this reason and previously had no second chance. Sculptures should be stable and ready to be placed on plinths. Artists are reminded that our gallery’s goal is to show work defined as Fine Art.

The reception to open the show will be on Sunday, January 12 at the Resident Art Gallery and will be from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. All are welcome to vary a quiet Sunday afternoon with art and refreshments.

Yoma, Resident Art Gallery

Happenings Among Ushers

In November, the Ushers and Alternates celebrated their first Annual Appreciation Dinner. A great time was had by all. This month was one of activity.

Paulina retired as team leader after 15 years of service as an Usher. Thank you, Paulina, for your reliability and leadership. Jon Harding is replacing Paulina as Team Leader on Team 6.

Verena has moved from serving as an Usher to the leadership of Team 2. Mary decided to move from her role as Usher to serving as an Alternate which fits her availability and time needs much better.

These changes reflect an active and reliable Usher organization serving our community.

Dewey, Ushers Committee.

STAFF AND RESIDENT NOTICESFor the Beauty of the Earth

In the spring of 1863, Folliott S. Pierpoint sat on a hilltop outside his native city of Bath, England, admiring the country view. Inspired to think about God's gifts, Pierpont wrote the song, “For the Beauty of the Earth.”

At our Pennswood Thanksgiving Eve Program, I was shocked, as perhaps you were if you attended the program, when I found myself mindlessly singing his words in the fourth verse of the hymn “For each perfect gift of thineTo our race so freely given . . .”

Several people came up to me after the program to express their dismay about the racial implications in that verse. What’s amazing is that we all sang the same song last year — all the verses. But last year, the words didn’t hit me between the eyes, and no one else mentioned being offended. We seem to be becoming more sensitive to racist ideas and words that are embedded in some of the most familiar and beloved songs and prose.

As I looked at various renditions of the lyrics online, I was thankful to see that some versions have been changed to read, “For each perfect gift of thine, To the world so freely given….”

What a good idea.

STAFF AND RESIDENT NOTICESGIFT GIVING REMINDER—

Resident Gifts to StaffA Pennswood Village Policy prohibits all staff and service contractors who work for Pennswood from accepting money or gifts from residents (or families and friends of residents). No staff is permitted to receive a gift from you although we do permit gifts of food or snacks for a whole department or large group of staff, but not directly to specific individuals.

Those associated with Pennswood are knowledgeable of this policy and understand that if you offer a gift or money, they must decline. This is sometimes awkward and difficult for our staff.

I ask that you please remember this policy, not only during the holiday season, but all year long. As a group, we are expected to avoid engaging in any conduct which could create an actual or potential conflict of interest. I appreciate your cooperation and again note the great appreciation that we have for each of you!

You Make a Difference! Many thanks to the many Pennswood residents who attended numerous hearings over the last five years opposing Elcon and its proposed liquid hazardous waste facility. Elcon’s intention is to site their first U.S. plant on the Delaware River in Falls Township on a 22-acre portion of the Keystone Industrial Port Complex. Both Falls Township and the PA DEP have now denied permits to Elcon, once again avoiding the potential for hazardous waste to contaminate the air and the water in our part of the state.

Why a Quaker Immigration Attorney Is in the PA House

of Representatives

Sunday, January 5 at 3:00 p.m. in the Game Room

Pennsylvania State Representative, Joe Hohenstein, will speak about his experiences as a Quaker in the State Legislature. He spent 25 years as an immigration attorney before deciding to run for political office. He has a national reputation representing some of the most difficult cases before the courts, acting as lead counsel on issues protecting the rights to asylum and due process in federal Circuit and District courts. Hohenstein challenged a 32-year incumbent for the 177th District of the PA House of Representatives. In 2018, he defeated a field of three challengers in the Democratic primary and won convincingly in the general election. He is one of only two Quakers in the PA State Legislature. He says he is seeking to find the place where Quakers can re-engage with a government from which they withdrew more than 250 years ago. “For me the fulfillment of civic and societal duties is a divine leading. Quiet is what I feel in times of Quaker worship. However, outside the walls of the Meetinghouse, the Spirit moves me in different

ways. I cannot remain quiet in the face of the injustices and the outright trampling of the truth. I am called to speak truth to power.” Joe is a member of Frankford Quaker Monthly Meeting and is a graduate of the Frankford Friends School, Earlham College, and the University of Minnesota Law School.MargueriteQuakerism Committee

HEALTH CARE Being a Careful Consumer• Ads & Sales

Read store ads carefully. Is the store offering sale items at a limited quantity? Can you get a rain check if it's an out-of-stock sale item? Take the ad with you when you go shopping to make sure you find the right item at the price advertised. Focus on bottom-line prices, not discounts. Discount claims may not reflect real savings if the seller inflated the original price of an item and then discounted it to make the "discount price" appear as a bargain.

• The Seller Buy from a seller that you trust. Whether the seller is down the street or across the country, know who you are buying from. Be wary of online retailers that do not disclose contact information, including a phone number and physical address. Understand the seller's return and refund policies. How long do you have to return the item? Will you get a full refund, store credit, or nothing? Is there a restocking fee? Do you need a receipt and the product packaging? If the seller ships an item that you later decide to return, who pays for shipping? If you're making an online purchase, make sure it's a secure website. Secure sites use an "https" prefix in their web address. The "s" stands for secure, which means the site is not secure without it! Don't e-mail financial information, such as credit card or bank account numbers. If ordering online or by phone, use a

credit card because credit cards generally offer consumers better protection in cases of fraud or disputes. Only give credit card numbers to sellers that you know and that you have called. Review your monthly statements to ensure the charges are correct. Avoid using a debit card because debit transactions draw directly from your bank account. Do not wire money or send cash. If it's a mail or phone order the merchant is required to ship the item within 30 days of receiving the order, unless the seller clearly discloses a longer wait in the advertisements or catalog. If the merchant cannot meet the 30-day deadline, the seller must disclose it to the customer and offer the option of a cancellation and full refund. If you're buying through a layaway, be sure you understand the policies, including any additional fees or restrictions and cancellation policies.• Warranties & Extended WarrantiesHow long does the seller warranty the product? Does a seller's warranty go beyond the manufacturer's warranty?Think carefully about extended warranties and service agreements. Be sure to understand the terms, including what is and is not covered. Extended warranties often mean add-on profits for sellers, but they can also offer peace of mind for the buyer and convenience if the product breaks during the warranty period.
