Pennswood in Song
Many of us have been wondering when we could
resume singing with Kurt Martin. The time has come! At 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 19 and Fridays thereafter, we will begin weekly Channel
970 sessions with Kurt and his outstanding piano accompaniment for listening or singing for
30 minutes. This will not be on Zoom. If you wish to have copies of the lyrics just for that week’s songs, you can pick them up at the front desk on the Tuesday or Wednesday immediately preceding.

Rebroadcast on Channel 970:
Saturday, February 13 at 6:00 p.m.
Tuesday, February 16 at 10:00 a.m.
Tuesday, February 16 at 5:00 p.m.
The next year will shape Pennsylvania elections and policy for the next decade. Fair
Districts PA Chair Carol Kuniholm describes bipartisan efforts to end legislative
gerrymandering and recent concern about a constitutional amendment that could open the
door to judicial gerrymandering as well. She also explains what's been learned in the past
few years about procedural rules that allow just a few legislative leaders to block reforms
that have strong public support. This is a critical time for we citizens to learn more and
advocate for fair maps and real representation.

Forum Speakers Wanted
All the World’s a Stage
Be our talent scouts in identifying great forum speakers! Our best speakers are often friends, colleagues or family members of our residents. Thanks to a generous bequest on the part of an early Pennswood resident, the Forum Committee can offer a $300 honorarium per speaker. By the magic of Zoom technology, speakers can come to us from any place on the planet.
We have wonderful speakers lined up for 2021 so far: a former president of the Mellon Foundation, a woman who championed female participation in STEM fields, and authors featured in the NY Times and Smithsonian magazine. In addition, future speakers include an early executive with Amazon and experts in China studies, suburban architecture, Broadway music, humor and creativity. These were all brought to our attention through relationships with our fellow residents.
We'd love your suggestions. Send your ideas and short description to Pat. Pat, Forum Committee

The Forum Committee Presents:
Dr. Earl Lewis
Unjust Past, Just Future
Tuesday, February 16 at 7:00 p.m.
Zoom and Channel 970
Earl Lewis is currently the distinguished professor of history, Afroamerican and African Studies and Public Policy, and director of the Center for Social Solutions at the University of Michigan. He was the founding director of the University Center for Social Solutions and for five years served as President of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. An author and esteemed social historian, he is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and the recipient of 11 honorary degrees.
Dr. Lewis’ topic is Unjust Past, Just Future. In the years immediately following the Civil War, Henrietta Wood earned a special footnote in history when she became the only African American to successfully sue her former enslavers for reparations and win in court. What makes Wood’s story remarkable is the continuing saga of reparations for the descendants of the formerly enslaved. In the years after the Civil War, Americans, black and white, debated the merits of financial as compared to educational and social rights or reparations for the newly manumitted. Since 1988, Congress has entertained a bill to explore studying the merits of racial reparations, a bill that has never made it out of committee. Nonetheless, a new movement is afoot in places like Evanston, Illinois, Asheville, North Carolina and the state of California where the question of reparations has either received full consideration or is about to. Dr. Lewis will trace the history and asks, “Can we escape our unjust past if we are unwilling to chart just futures?” He will suggest a path forward, informed by but not anchored to past failures.

6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Zoom
Crossing Vineyards and Winery in Washington
Crossing will be conducting an entertaining and
educational virtual wine and chocolate tasting
experience for Pennswood residents. The private
tasting will be led by Co-Founder Thoma Carroll,
Sr. It will be conducted through Zoom and last
about 45 to 60 minutes.
Crossing Vineyards and Winery was founded by
the Carroll Family in 2000. Tom Jr.’s lifelong
dream was to create a vineyard on the historic
property where he spent his childhood. He
partnered with his parents Tom Sr. and Christine
to establish Crossing Vineyards and Winery,
which offered its first vintage in 2002. After years
of preparation, Tom Jr. became one of Pennsylva-
nia's youngest wine makers at the age of 27.
Since its establishment, Crossing has earned over
450 International wine awards, including “Best of
Bucks” for ten years in a row and “Best of Bucks
Mont” for six years.
Each Tasting Kit includes:
CHOCOLATES- A box of six assorted chocolates
Flavors:
Hazelnut Gianduja (hazelnut-scented milk
chocolate truffle)
Chocolate Cherry Truffle (dark chocolate
infused with Crossing Vineyards Chocolate
Cherry Truffle wine)
Espresso Meltaway Truffle (rich espresso-
flavored bittersweet chocolate)
Thai Tea Truffle (milk chocolate ganache
infused with coconut-scented Thai tea &
lemongrass)

a bottle," the perfect complement to a great
meal. Try it at room temperature and lightly

Book Discussion Group—March, 2021 Book Choice
Our next book conversation is on Tuesday, March 9 at 10:30 a.m. via Zoom. We will be discussing Children Act by Ian McEwan.
Children Act has been selected “one of the best books of the year” by the Washington Post, NPR, Vogue and others. It’s about an English High Court Judge, Fiona Maye, fiercely intelligent, exacting, and intelligent, who presides over family court. Her professional success belies the domestic strife in her 30-year marriage and her lingering regret that they never had a child. She has to decide the case of Adam, an attractive 17-year old boy who refuses for religious reasons—supported by his devout parents—to receive medical care that could save his life. As Fiona visits Adam in the hospital, a surprising interchange alters them both.
At our May book discussion Tuesday, May 11 at 10:30 a.m., we will be discussing Clementine—The Life of Mrs. Winston Churchill by Sonia Purcell, author of A Woman of No Importance, a book we’ve previously read.
All are welcome. You can join the meeting either by computer or iPad (visual and voice) OR by phone (voice only). You do not need to have read the book.
We meet every other month on the second Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. If you want to add the dates for the months ahead in 2021, they are: March 9, May 11, July 13, September 14 and November 9. For questions or to add your name to the book group list, contact Beth.

Welcome, New Resident Raymond
By the time he was in high school in Elmsford, New York, Raymond knew what his passion
in life would be, and he promptly set out to accomplish it. Having obtained his
undergraduate degree in English at Rutgers University, he attended General Theological
Seminary, an Episcopal seminary in New York City. He received a very fine theological
education in the English tradition, but he found practical matters such as how to hold a baby
during baptism had to be learned-while-doing.
Raymond first worked as a curate for three and half
years in Peekskill, New York, then became rector of
Christ Church, Warwick, New York for seventeen
years. Soon thereafter, he was called to St Mary’s in
Haledon, New Jersey, where he was rector for seven
years.
In 1994, he met Henry, the love of his life, who had found a job in Silicon Valley; they
moved together to San Carlos, California, and Raymond began to do interim work in three
churches in the Bay Area. Of special delight was that one of those churches was close to the
San Francisco Opera House, an interest Raymond and Henry shared. Over the course of his
ministry, he mostly worked in small parishes with part-time and volunteer help; one of his
interim parishes had eleven paid staff.
In his 30s, Raymond became an avid cyclist. Beginning in 1991, he did seven annual two-
week fund-raising cycling trips run by the American Lung Association of California,
e.g. Seattle to San Francisco and from Kalispell, Montana to Calgary. At the age of 55, he
undertook the annual Lung Association 45-day bicycle journey from Seattle to Washington,
DC! He and Henry also did many week-long back-packing treks into the Sierras and the
West.
Returning to Pennsylvania in 2004, Raymond and Henry purchased a home in Bethlehem,
where Raymond planned and nurtured an English-style garden in the once-grassy half-acre
property. After retirement, he served as part-time Rector of St. George's, Hallertown, New
Jersey for five years, then assisted at Trinity Church, Easton, Pennsylvania, taught courses
for the Diocese of Bethlehem, and volunteered at a church-sponsored soup kitchen.
Travel has taken him and Henry to Japan, New Zealand, Italy, and elsewhere, but among his
favorite places were Barcelona and “anywhere in England or in the mountains.”
After looking at long-term care solutions, he and Henry chose Pennswood, where they
moved in November with their two cats.
Raymond is looking forward to tackling a garden plot here, and we look forward to seeing it.

Bolded Movie: Chosen by Film Committee

Film Committee Movie Descriptions
Smoke (1995): Starring- Harvey Keitel, William Hurt & Giancarlo Esposito
A Brooklyn cigar store anchors the vignettes that make up this lyrical Wayne Wang movie
written by famous author Paul Auster. Auggie (Harvey Keitel), the store manager, is surprised
by a visit from his ex-wife, who says their daughter is in trouble. Rashid (Harold Perrineau
Jr.), a runaway searching for his father (Forest Whittaker), saves Auggie's customer, Paul
(William Hurt), from being hit by a car, and changes his life forever.
Luce (2019): Starring- Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer & Kelvin Harrison Jr.
An all-star high school athlete and accomplished debater, Luce is a poster boy for the new
American Dream as are his parents, who adopted him from a war-torn country a decade
earlier. When Luce's teacher makes a shocking discovery in his locker, Luce's stellar
reputation is called into question. But is he really at fault, or is Ms. Wilson preying on
dangerous stereotypes?
Gran Torino (2008): Starring- Clint Eastwood, Bee Vang & Christopher Carley
Curmudgeonly Korean War vet Walt must confront his Hmong immigrant neighbors and his
own prejudices when their teenage son Thao tries to steal Walt's beloved 1972 Gran Torino.
Walt soon assumes the unlikely role of guardian angel to young Thao.
