Dear Parishioners, One of the most challenging aspects of the life of grace is to persevere when the difficulties are of a duller kind, inducing us to apathy, lack of fervour and spiritual mediocrity. It seems

very much like this will be a difficulty for us all in the immediate future, given the strange circumstances in which we now find ourselves. We need to hang on to our daily schedule of prayer, giving time to Lectio Divina and mental prayer, and never failing to pray the daily rosary. To motivate us, we will include in the newsletter some inspiring facts about the rosary in the coming weeks.

Also, with the celebration of the feast of St. John Vianney (August 4 OF, and August 8 EF), Archbishop Mark Coleridge has penned a letter to priests which may be helpful to everyone. A few extracts are included on Page 2, for your interest.

Please note that Archdiocese insists, and has repeated to us again in the past week, that Communion is to be received in the hand at the Ordinary Form of the Mass. Those who wish to receive on the tongue will need to attend the Extraordinary Form in order to do so. Thank you for your understanding.

Mass Availability and Updates

The next fortnight of Masses are now available. Bookings are still required for Mass and can be made online, as above.

Due to limited spaces we ask that you preregister for only two Sunday Masses per calendar month.

Every Saturday after 12 noon, however, you are welcome to book in for any remaining Masses that weekend, and these bookings will not count towards your monthly limit for Sunday Masses.

Confession Confession is available at Mary Immaculate Church:

Wednesday 7:30pm - 8:30pm

Friday 7:30pm - 8:30pm Confession is also available for those booked in for the following Masses:

Monday during the 7:00pm Mass

After 9:00am weekday Masses.

In accordance with regulations, names, addresses, and phone numbers of all people attending the church are recorded by a marshal and stored by the parish in case they are needed for contact tracing purposes. They will be destroyed after 56 days.

Vespers and Benediction

Vespers is the official evening prayer of the Church prayed by priests and religious throughout the world. The Church has long desired and recommended the faithful to attend these Sunday evening devotions. Bookings are required due to capacity limits and can be made by 3:00pm on the same Sunday. Vespers is every Sunday at 5:00pm.

Rosary Rally Austria In 1945, after WWII, Austria was occupied by Russian forces. Food was in short supply, conditions miserable. The

people of Austria desperately wanted independence. On 2nd Feb 1948 ( Feast of Our

Lady of Lights) Fr Petrus Pavlicek, a capuchin priest, visted Mariazell, the main Marian

shrine in Austria to seek Our Lady's counsel. As he prayed he heard an inner voice say "

Do as I say and you will have peace". In September 1948 Fr Petrus began the 'Crusade

of the Holy Rosary' through the intercession of Our Lady of Fatima. The crusade had

3 aims 1) Conversion of sinners 2) Peace in the world 3) Freedom of Austria. Fr Petrus'

plan was to get 10% of Austrians to pledge to pray the Holy Rosary each day. Eventually,

even the Prime Minister Leopold Figl and members of his cabinet joined in. On May 13th

1955 the occupying forces finally agreed to withdraw from Austria without a single shot

being fired. The unthinkable was achieved. At a time when Russian aggression and

religious persecution were at their highest. Exactly one year later on 13th May 1956

Austria held its first independent election.

LETTER TO THE PRIESTS OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF BRISBANE

on the Feast of St John Vianney, Patron Saint of Priests

In this strange landscape of COVID-19 and on this feast of St John Vianney, patron of pastors, I think

of you and of his words: “The priesthood is the love of the Heart of Jesus”. It is the love of the One with

the pierced heart from which there flow streams of blood and water for the life of the world. John

Vianney’s heart was certainly pierced in many ways, as is the heart of any priest, ours in a special way

in this time of pandemic. But from the Curé’s heart there flowed those streams of life, as they do from

ours.

What is it that we…tend to forget about the priesthood? What are those things to which the Curé of Ars stands as

enduring witness, even if we tend to forget them?

One aspect is mercy. Here I mean not just the human comfort which pastors offer in so many

difficult situations. I mean the overwhelming mercy of God. In John Vianney, this led to a horror

of sin, which is why he often wept at the stories of sin he heard in the confessional; perhaps

we have grown used to sin. One of the great prayers of Lent is that we never grow used to sin.

To this we might also add that we may grow more and more in a sense of the power and

beauty of God’s mercy. It was this sense that led John Vianney to spend hours a day in the

confessional – as much as eighteen hours late in his life as thousands came to seek God’s

mercy from him in the Sacrament. I ask therefore: do we need a deep renewal of the

Sacrament of Reconciliation? This may be a time when we need a resurgence of the sense of

the horror of sin and the glory of mercy, beginning with the priests. This

has been a constant theme of Pope Francis, one of the ways in which the

Spirit has spoken through the Successor of Peter.

MASS READINGS First Reading: Kings 19:9.11-13

When Elijah reached Horeb, the mountain of God, he went into the cave and spent the night in it. Then he was told, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord.’ Then the Lord himself went by. There came a mighty wind, so strong it tore the mountains and shattered the rocks before the Lord. But the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind came an earthquake. But the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire. But the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there came the sound of a gentle breeze. And when Elijah heard this, he covered his face with his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.

I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace. His help is near for those who fear him and his glory will dwell in our land.

Mercy and faithfulness have met; justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice look down from heaven.

The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him and peace shall follow his steps.

Second Reading: Romans 9:1-5

What I want to say is no pretence; I say it in union with Christ - it is the truth - my conscience in union with the Holy Spirit assures me of it too. What I want to say is this: my sorrow is so great, my mental anguish so endless, I would willingly be condemned and be cut off from Christ if it could help my brothers of Israel, my own flesh and blood. They were adopted as sons, they were given the glory and the covenants; the Law and the ritual were drawn up for them, and the promises were made to them. They are descended from the patriarchs and from their flesh and blood came Christ who is above all, God for ever blessed! Amen.

Gospel: Matthew 14:22-23

Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he would send the crowds away. After sending the crowds away he went up into the hills by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, while the boat, by now far out on the lake, was battling with a heavy sea, for there was a head-wind. In the fourth watch of the night he went towards them, walking on the lake, and when the disciples saw him walking on the lake they were terrified. `It is a ghost’ they said, and cried out in fear. But at once Jesus called out to them, saying, `Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid.' It was Peter who answered. `Lord,' he said `if it is you, tell me to come to you across the water.' `Come' said Jesus.

Then Peter got out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus across the water, but as soon as he felt the force of the wind, he took fright and began to sink. `Lord! Save me!' he cried.

Jesus put out his hand at once and held him. `Man of little faith,' he said `why did you doubt?' And as they got into the boat the wind dropped. The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, `Truly, you are the Son of God'.
